THE SCOOP ON SB HACKS
PARTNERSHIP OVERVIEW
M A K E W A V E S M A K E W A V E S
If you've never seen a hackathon before, visualize hundreds of
diverse coders on a 36 hour mission to learn, experiment, and
solve unique problems. Coders of all skill levels work together to
cement their understanding of modern coding techniques, and the
programming basics that recruiting companies are looking for.
Hackers get a chance to bounce their wildest ideas off of peers
and mentors from industry. It's not about making the next big start
up, but fostering the start up mentality of creating a new project
that everyone involved can't wait to use. We want every
hackathon attendee to have an experience of learning and
creating that they will never forget, and even more, bring back to
their local coding communities.
SO WHY SANTA BARBARA?
THE PARTNERSHIP
SB Hacks is an incredible opportunity that will bring a pool of quality,
self-motivated developers directly to you, our sponsors. As a partner
you will be able mentor the sharpest minds from all around the country
throughout the competition and even present your own personal
challenges. SB Hacks is also a fantastic opportunity for you to proudly
display your company’s brand and products. You truly are the heart and
soul of this entire operation. All of the donations will go towards
ensuring that we have the absolute best venue, food, transportation,
prizes, and entertainment possible. The following page displays the
various donation packages but any and all donations are appreciated,
so please reach out to us if you would like to be involved in whichever
way you can. This event is sure to make some major waves and you
don’t want to miss the ride.
At UC Santa Barbara, we foster an environment that is warm and
friendly. Our environment is important, because ideas are fragile.
People sometimes come up with outlandish ideas, but because
others are afraid to venture into the unknown, those ideas are shot
down. At SB Hacks, our supportive environment encourages hackers
to try out their ideas, to experiment and make mistakes, so that they
cultivate and grow their idea. Moreover, the numerous SB tech
startups as well as the TMP program on campus are creating a
growing tech culture both on and off campus. These growing
communities of people who work hard and play hard are what make
SB Hacks special.

Q & AIS THERE A THEME? DO HACKERS HAVE TO WORK ON
ANYTHING IN PARTICULAR?
Hackers can work on any project with any technology they like.
The only restriction is that they can’t have any pre-written lines of
code, and any third-party API used must be available to all other
hackers as well.
WHAT KINDS OF PEOPLE ATTEND HACKATHONS?
SB Hacks will be a temporary home for passionate and talented
college students who enjoy perfecting their craft by independently
coding and getting involved in great projects. Over the course of
the weekend you will be able to work with and evaluate a quality
pool of engineers and entrepreneurs to see what they can
accomplish in short window of time as well as how they work in
teams.

Q & AWHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE A MENTOR?
Mentors are sent by sponsors to help hackers with their projects,
particularly with respect to working with any API’s you may have
opened up. By helping hackers work and develop projects over the
course of the event, you can help them create even better projects
showing the capabilities of your API’s, as well as show them by
example what it’s like to work with developers at your company.
WE WANT TO BE INVOLVED AND BE A SPONSOR,
BUT WE DON’T HAVE ANY MONEY. IS THERE ANYTHING
ELSE WE CAN DO?
Yes! Planning a hackathon like this is a complicated event with
many moving parts, so if you could provide anything, it would be
greatly appreciated. Things like food and drinks, some forms of
entertainment, or assistance with the Wi-Fi such as providing
routers/modems. Additionally, anything the company can offer
exclusively (access to API, free use of company products, etc..)
would be of great value.

Q & AWHAT EXACTLY IS AN API/BRAND PRIZE?
If you have any questions, please don’t hesitateto reach out to us via email. We would love to chat!
Companies are strongly encouraged to provide API or Branded
Prizes. Prizes are an excellent way to drive students to interact
with your company and do work relevant to your company's
domain. Prizes can be monetary, however things like paid trips to
the company's office, or consumer electronics, have been wildly
popular among attendees at past hackathons.
The prize itself is to be provided by the sponsor and the criteria for
winning (i.e. best use of a company's API) is up to the sponsor to
determine. The details of the prize should be provided to us no
later than January 14th.
Representatives from the company will have the opportunity to
interact with the students and their projects at the end of the event
during the project expo. Judging is left to the representatives of
the company giving the pr ize. Al l Branded Prizes wi l l be
announced during the closing ceremony.
