On the 6 th August Joshua Monaghan-Coombs (Performance Squad A) Para Swimmer, flew to Barcelona to take part in the Cerebral Palsy International Sport and Recreation Association World Games which was held in San Cugat near Barcelona. Over 800 athletes from all over the world gathered to take part in the event of which swimming was one of many sports. Josh broke his right elbow in the gym at his University in mid May so he had not been back to full training very long before the competition. After 3 days of training and meeting other Team England swimmers, Joshua was ready to race. On Friday 10 th August Josh swam in 4 races, achieving a gold medal in 100m breaststroke, a silver in the 200m IM, and silver in the 100m backstroke. The following day he clinched bronze by a whisker in the 100m freestyle. Congratulations on becoming a world medallist Josh! We need to give a big shout out to Aidan Vuong, James Jones and Mo Fitzgerald of Tiger Sharks who travelled to Ponds Forge in Sheffield to compete in the English Schools Swimming Association gala (http://www.essa-schoolswimming.com) as London's entry for the primary aged competition. This was a massive achievement as none of our swimmers had competed before, we were unsure up until the last minute we could even get a team together. Our last confirmed entrant Mo Fitzgerald only trialled for the club the week before.

The swimmers had a great day, great swims and we are all massively proud. A big thank you to the parents who came along and supported. The feedback from coaches and supporters was great and we are looking forward to next year when they will be seasoned athletes. Incidentally, James hadn't strictly completed a length in the pool up until a week prior to the event and it was in part owing to his attendance of the Top-Up sessions in the half term that put him in contention for the event. Any contact regarding the top-up program and Tiger Sharks please contact Michael Griffin via the email: [email protected].

Congratulations to Luke Oladele-Ajose, Junior Club Captain for being selected to compete at the English Inter-County Championships in Sheffield.

Congratulations to Lauren Wilcox of our Masters Squad who travelled to Slovenia at the beginning of this month to compete in the European Masters championships and won gold in both the 200m and 800m freestyle.

The gala committee are offering a Q&As evening at Glassmill (meeting room on the ground floor) on Monday 1st October from 7pm – 8pm, for anybody who has any questions on how to complete a gala form and what all the information means to you and your swimmer. Please feel free to pop in and we’ll be happy to help. If you can’t make it on Monday there’ll be another chance at Forest Hill on Friday 5th October, 5.30pm – 7.30pm.

WHITE HORSE LEAGUE –JUNE

A great turn out from our team and even better results. The team atmosphere was brilliant showing their teamwork and motivation constantly cheering our competitors on in every race. Some great swims from our younger swimmers and one of the most impressive was from Luke in Performance B squad who swam up in the older age group and not only won the race but even had to slow down due to going too fast! KENT JUNIOR LEAGUE R1 –JUNE

This meet had quite possibly the best atmosphere ever!! Noisy, competitive and we held our own against some really strong teams … a big shout out to Teddy Lewis who had us all screaming him on to win his breaststroke race … and thank you to Silvia’s dad for driving her down to Sevenoaks at the last minute so we didn’t lose any points!!

MASTERS

Following on from a super second place at the Frank Ryder meet in March, Saxon Crown Masters have had a successful spring season at both local and national events. Early June saw Lauren and Kat make the long journey down to Plymouth for the British Masters Championships. A weekend full of personal best times saw them bring home seven medals, including 5 golds making Saxon Crown 51st of the 195 clubs at the event. Locally, the Kent Masters Championships were spread over two meets this year: the long distance championships incorporated into the Erith & District masters meet in May and the sprint championships at Medway in late June. With points gained across both events, the Saxon Crown masters team won the Best New Club trophy (for the top club with fewer than 5 swimmers at the 2017 championships). At the Erith meet, Kat and Leanne bravely faced high pool temperatures for their long distance races to become Kent champions in the 800m and 1500m races respectively. The pool had cooled a little in time for the afternoon sessions of swimming. The team did well with good swims by everyone. Bex, David, John and Lauren finished top 3 overall in their age groups on points. The two mixed relay teams also swam well to finish 3rd in the medley relay and 2nd in the freestyle.

Despite the clash with the England v Panama match, a small team also attended the sprints meet in June. David and Lauren managed top 3 finishes across the board with Lauren breaking 5 championship records on the way to winning overall top female swimmer at the championships. The masters team are now looking forward to a busy summer with a number of open water events including the dock2dock in London and several swimmers heading out to Slovenia in September for the European Masters championships.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

Saxon Crown has now over 500 swimmers and as we grow as a club there becomes an ever increasing need for more parents to volunteer to help make things run smoothly. This is especially so when the club is hosting galas such as the Future Champs and Club Championships, if anyone is interested in becoming a volunteer please email Neil at [email protected].

RAISING A CONCERNS

We have established routes for raising a concern, which we recognise may happen from time to time. In the first instance please arrange a time to talk to coaches, or contact the welfare officer if you'd prefer. Details on how to do this are on our website - under Club Information. It is never acceptable to come on poolside uninvited to talk to a coach, or to interrupt them if they are meeting someone else. They need to supervise swimmers and not be distracted.

SUPPORTING YOUR SWIMMER

It is great to be enthusiastic about your swimmers' achievements but please don't put them under pressure to perform. There is a great video on YouTube about this, which is worth everyone watching, called "It's our game not yours"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s8R50LdkTVc

PHOTOGRAPHY

Photography is not permitted in any of our training sessions unless agreed in advance with the Club and the Leisure Centre.

FEEDBACK

We encourage our coaches to give feedback first and foremost direct to the swimmers rather than parents, and, to keep fees down, we do not provide written reports on progress. Please contact the coach concerned if you wish to discuss a swimmer's progression but ideally this is always done with the swimmer present as they are the ones who need to learn how to swim better, not us parents!

Many thanks in your co-operation in making Saxon Crown a friendly and supportive amateur sports club.
