It uti-lizes a 20-hp Honda gasoline engine andcan cut logs 30 inches in diameter and upto 20 feet long. Optional hydraulic upgradenow available. • The Model 18M Baker portable bandsawmill is a terrific mill powered by a 20-hp Honda gasoline engine and is capable ofsawing logs up to 30 inches in diameter and16 feet long. • The Baker Wood Buddy™ is an eco-nomical mill with a 9-hp Honda gasolineengine that can turn logs as big as 28 inch-es in diameter into excellent lumber, ties,and squares ready for market. IT WAS OVER 35 YEARS AGO thatCook’s Saw began working in the circlesaw business. At that time Kenneth

Cook was a full-time preacher with a wifeand three hungry boys to feed, and so hestarted hammering circle blades in his sparetime. He proved to have a relentless drivefor perfection at hammering circle saws,and, before long, his reputation had grownto the point where he was driving a 100-mile-radius route and servicing sawyers inthree states.

His boys were also hammering andreplacing the circle saw teeth late at night,even on school nights, and, as a result, they,too, gained a tremendous amount of knowl-edge about the sawmill industry.

In the early1980s circle sawsbegan to give wayto smaller bandsawmills. It wasaround this timethat Tim Cook(second oldest)developed the CatClaw Sharpener tosharpen bandblades. Today, itcontinues to beone of the best-selling sharpeners in the United States.

Due to its strong foundation in circleblade technology, Cook’s was able to transi-tion effectively and early to the band blademarket. Starting by welding band blades,Cook’s Saw produced blades that wouldhold up in the cut with no blade breakage.Soon the business grew from 500 to 1,000 to2,000 to 5,000, and then on to 10,000 plus.

The LT70 proved that it could keep up just fi ne with a mill 3,000 pounds heavier and $5,000 more expensive. The LT70 sawed at a rate of 1,227 BF/HR with an edger, shattering Wood-Mizer’s advertised rate of up to 850 BF/HR.

The LT35 proved that it could nearly triple Wood-Mizer’s advertised rate of 350 BF/HR. When the offi cial tally came in, the LT35 with an edger was clocked at 920 BF/HR.

The LT15GO fi nished fi rst in the manual sawmill competition, sawing at a rate of 701 BF/HR with an edger, almost tripling its advertised rate, and fi nished ahead of the nearest competitor by more than 20 minutes.

The small lumber kilns are delivered asone unit. They start at 8,000 BF capacityand range up to 18,000 BF of 4/4 lumberusing 3/4 stickers. In 2011 Suffolk introduced a new 1-1/2-inch-by-0.052 blade to replace theircurrent 0.056 blade. The new 1-1/2 inch isdesigned to run on both low- and high-pro-duction mills and resaws. This blade’s thick-ness is a perfect match for the gullet depthand width combined with milled and induc-tion-hardened teeth. It will allow fortremendous stability and overall life.

In 2009 Suffolk introduced a 1-3/4-inch-by-0.052 blade which has a perfect balanceof width, thickness, and gullet geometry toproduce excellent run times, stability, andgreat overall blade life. This blade isdesigned to run on high production medi-um-size mills and resaws.

Suffolk introduced a 2-inch-by-0.052blade in 2004, which was specificallydesigned to cut grade lumber on high-pro-duction band resaws, such as the Brewco1600/1800 and large band mills. This bladehas exceeded expectations and has givencustomers both longer blade life and fasterfeed rates over the bimetal blades common-ly run on these saws. At approximately halfthe cost of a bimetal blade, this is a truemoneymaker.

Suffolk introduced a 1-1/4-inch-by-0.045blade in 2004. This blade has become thecompany’s most successful 1-1/4-inch bladeto date, running on medium-size band millsand resaws, exceeding sales of the 1-1/4-inch-by-0.042 by three times in the firstyear.•
