Notes From theOffice:

Our students have done an outstanding job of transitioning into a new school year. They

continue to impress each day as they demonstrate our expected STAR behavior!

Thank you to the K-2 families who have offered to volunteer. You will be notified soon of

an upcoming meeting to discuss volunteer placements. Your time is much appreciated

In the first month of school we have had an excessive number of early dismissals. Please

note that children may NOT be dismissed from school unless advanced written notice of an

appointment has been provided to the office.

We understand that you may occasionally need to change the dismissal procedure for your child. In such instances, please notify the teacher by sending a note with the child, rather than calling the office to make this change. Your cooperation is appreciated.

Thank you for your patience last month as the FRPD Traffic Division worked to better understand the traffic patterns during arrival time. We will continue to work on perfecting our systems to ensure a smooth drop off for all.

Please be conscious of other families during dismissal time- SMOKING on school grounds is illegal and absolutely forbidden. Additionally, PLEASE DO NOT BRING PETS onto school property to avoid any unnecessary risk to our students or mess to our school grounds.

If your contact information changes (phone numbers/ address) be certain to contact the office immediately to ensure that we have current information on file.

TOYS and ELECTRONICS of any kind are prohibited from school. This includes stuffed animals and Pokemon cards. If your child is found to have a toy in school, it may be confiscated by staff until an adult comes to school to claim it. These items are very

The Frank M. Silvia School has been recognized as a COMMENDATION SCHOOL by the state of

Massachusetts for our outstanding accomplishment of closing the achievement gap for all of our students.

This is a prestigious honor- ONLY 42 schools in Massachusetts are designated commendation schools!

Notes from Nurse Sally3 Questions to Ask About Your Sick ChildTo know whether your child should stay home from school, the American Academy of Pediatrics suggests answering these three quick questions:

1. Does your child have a fever? Fevers of 101° F or more are generally a sign of illness, so children should stay home from school.

2. Is your child well enough to engage in class? If ill kids seem too run down to get much out of school, keep them home.

3. Do you think your child has a contagious illness, such as the flu or pinkeye? If so, keep them at home until they're no longer infectious.

When Children Should Stay Home From School Fever is the body's way of destroying the germs making it sick, and it's a common

symptom of infections such as flu. Keep your children home if their temperature is 101° F or higher. Wait until children are fever-free before letting them return to school.

Diarrhea is often the result of infection, food poisoning, or a side effect to medications like antibiotics.Keep children home until stools are formed and your doctor gives the okay. Make sure your sick child stays well-hydrated.

Vomiting is another way for the body to rid itself of the germs making it sick, and is usually caused by a stomach virus or stomach infection. Keep children home if they've vomited twice or more in the last 24 hours. They can return to school after symptoms clear up or your doctor says they're no longer contagious.

Severe cough and cold symptoms should keep kids home from school. A serious cough could be a sign of contagious conditions like whooping cough, viral bronchitis, or croup. It can also be a sign of asthma or allergies.

Sore throats can be a symptom of strep or a common cold. If your child has been diagnosed with strep throat, keep your child at home for at least 24 hours after starting antibiotics. If your child has a mild cold, it's okay to go to school.

Pinkeye (conjunctivitis) is contagious, and children should stay home from school for the first 24 hours after treatment begins. Symptoms of pinkeye include eye redness, irritation, swelling, and pus.

Headaches can be a symptom of contagious conditions like viral gastroenteritis, flu, meningitis, and strep throat. Opinions differ on whether a child should be kept home. If your child doesn't have any other signs of illness, and feels okay, your child can go to school.

Rashes can be the sign of contagious conditions such as chickenpox, bacterial meningitis, or impetigo. Children should be kept home until they're diagnosed. They can return to school after symptoms are gone and their doctor gives the okay.

Earaches aren't contagious . There's no need to keep a child with a mild earache home, as long as your child feels well enough to concentrate.

Mild cold or respiratory symptomsare no reason to keep children at home so long as their nasal drainage is clear and their cough is mild.

It is essential that all children are in school each day, ready to learn!

Please follow the guidelines above to determine if your child is well enough to come toschool.

Pre-K

Welcome! In the beginning of the school year preschool will be exploring our classrooms, learning routines, and beginning our home unit of study.-children will be talking about home and school routines-exploring people and places in a neighborhood-listing favorite things to do at home-learning about the importance of helping at home-discussing concepts of families and feelings-describing differences between home and school

Kindergarten 😀

The kindergarten students have been working hard to learn the rituals and routines of school. In mathematics, will be working on Early Numeracy and counting.  The students will be working independently and in GUIDED small groups.   During language arts, we will begin working on the Reading Street Curriculum.  The first few weeks of October will be focused on alphabetic awareness.  Also, the students will be learning high frequency words weekly. Please have your child practice writing his/her name and shoe tying!   Homework will begin in October.

Grade 1

We would like to welcome you and your student to first grade. Your students have been working hard on learning the new routines and rules of first grade as well as reviewing kindergarten skills in all areas. In October, we will be starting Unit 1 in Reading Street focusing on short vowels.  In math, our focus will be combinations of 10 as well as forward and backward number counting.  The homework we will be sending home reinforces these skills. We are looking forward to a successful year.  Please check your student's homework folder every night for any updates or changes! :)

Grade 2

Welcome to Second Grade. We are off to a great start! This month we will be exploring magnets and understanding the world around them. In math the students will be working on place value. Continue reading nightly with your child. The goal for all second grade students is being fluent in addition and subtraction facts up to 20. PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE!Looking forward to an awesome year!!!!

Grade 3

We would like to welcome all of you to the start of the third grade year. We are off and running in Math looking at shapes and their attributes. The children are having a great time experiencing sorting the shapes. In Science, we are looking at Simple Machines and how they make work easier. We are into Unit 1 in our Reading series. The children are learning rituals and routines of the classroom and the school. We are looking forward to working with all of you to have a successful year!

Grade 5

In ELA, we are off to a great start this year in fifth grade! We have just launched our book groups and we are reading the novel Hatchet by Gary Paulsen. We will be studying character traits while analyzing the main character, Brian, as he takes on the challenge of surviving alone in the Canadian wilderness. We are looking forward to a great year!      -Miss Gomes & Ms. UrbanIn Science, we have been working on our Variables unit.  This includes learning about the process of scientific inquiry, collecting data and making sense of the data through forming conclusions.  We have been visiting the science

lab with Mrs. Campos to conduct our pendulum investigations and complete our lab reports.

Grade 4

Welcome to 4th grade! We have had a fantastic start to the year. Your children have been working hard to be STAR students at Silvia. As we enter the month of October, students will be working hard to complete a narrative. They will learn how to edit and revise their work. It is imperative for students to be reading a choice novel for at least 30 minutes nightly and completing a literary letter every two weeks! Please discuss this with your child! They will also be learning how to respond to literature through different question types. In math, students will be finishing up geometry and moving towards factors and multiples. It is crucial for students to be practicing their multiplication facts each night! This month in science, it is all about the weather! We are looking forward to having a collaborative and successful year! :)

We are off to a great start in 4D! Students are exploring factors and multiples in math, and they are doing a great job explaining their thinking! We are currently working on our Performance Tasks for our first novel, The Kid in the Red Jacket, and we are eager to begin our next novel, Iggie’s House by Judy Blume. Students are currently working on their first narrative piece, and our study of weather and climate will continue into October. Don’t forget to have your child practice their math facts each night!

STEM/ Tech

The Tech lab is up and running, and students will begin to work on Dreambox as they earn minutes towards a Nook. To support your child in Math, encourage them to spend some time trying the different games so that they can apply their Math skills. There are also a variety of web based games to help your child learn reading and science on the Silvia Computer Lab web page.

Music

We have been reviewing our routines and performing them beautifully. We will be working on our music symbols in grades 3 -5. We use music symbols as road maps or signs in music. Did you know that music symbols stay the same in almost every country? That means, a student from Japan could read the exact same notes, symbols, and play music with a student from the United States without worrying about speaking their language. Music is a language all by itself!

Art

We are off to a colorful year at Silvia Elementary School! Students are excited about making fabulous Art.  In Kindergarten, students are practicing their cutting skills and are cutting apple shapes and are adding lots of fun details, like worms and pattern to their backgrounds. First grade is working with line and shape and form and are creating school houses.  Second graders are working with line and texture and are also creating Fall apples.  Third graders are working with line and symmetry and are making symmetrical scarecrows.  Students are adding texture by adding burlap hats and patches of fabric. Fourth graders are working with line and are

PE

Things are moving along well in the gymnasium. Students have gotten on board with our Silvia School warm-up routine and are getting stronger every class. We have been working really hard at learning all of our Playworks activities so that we can take the movement we learn inside, and transfer it outside to recess. Ask your child about the exercises they have learned and encourage them to show you how each exercise is done. Hang on to your seats folks, GREAT things are to come in PE! -Mrs. Mahjoory& Mr. Powers

drawing self-portraits. Fifth graders are also working with line and are creating abstract "Smiley's".

Dear Parents,

Welcome to our first month at Silvia Elementary School. We are very excited to meet and catch up with all our Silvia students and families.  This year is going to be extra special because we added a second full time School Adjustment Counselor.  Mrs. Kristina Michel comes to us with tons of school aged counseling experience and is eager to work with all our kiddos and their families.

The first full week of school we went around to all classrooms and introduced ourselves and talked about the role of the school adjustment counselor.  We talked about how students could meet with us and then discussed the rules of confidentiality when they do. We discussed and had many lessons on each of the weekly character traits, as we will do each week, throughout the year!

Please check out our webpage as there are lots of helpful links and resources for you to look at or download. Go to:   www.fallriverschools.org  and click on Silvia School, then find School Adjustment Counselor on the lower right hand side to direct you to the page!

If there is ever a question or concern that you may have do not hesitate to reach out to one of us to help out in any way we can.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Oliveira & Mrs. [email protected]@fallriverschools.org

At the Silvia School, we reinforce the expected behaviors in all parts of the building, throughout the entire school day. We

Wednesday, October 8th is International Walk to School Day

Students around the globe will be putting their best foot forward on Wednesday 10/8/14 by walking to school. Why walk to school? This global initiative brings some important

issues into light for our students by being a part of something much bigger than themselves- namely the importance of fitness and the power they have to help the

environment by reducing their carbon footprint for even ONE day.

For the past 3 years, every single one of Fall River’s schools has participated in both the October International Walk to School Day as well as the May Massachusetts Walk to

School Day, an unprecedented accomplishment state-wide. Here at Silvia, our participation looks a bit different. While we encourage people to walk to school, we

understand that it is not logistically possible for most families. So we will walk at school. During every special subject (art, music, PE, Tech) the staff has embedded opportunities

for children to participate in this great day by walking and having fun.

Please remember to wear your sneakers and bring a positive attitude!
