Saving Sight is a nonprofit organization that

changes lives through the gift of sight and

charitable vision services. We were founded

in 1960 as an eye bank in central Missouri, and

today, our vision programs serve more than

50,000 people each year. We strive to be the

global partnership model for how eye banking

and charitable vision services can most

effectively serve people and communities.

Page 3: Saving Sight Annual Report | 2013-2014

When we looked back at our work from the past year, we noticed a

pattern: so much of our success could be traced back to our strategic

plan. At Saving Sight, we’ve always planned our work, but the strategic

planning process, started in February 2013, enabled us to bring our staff,

management, board of directors, and some other stakeholders together

to plan collaboratively. By integrating all of those different viewpoints,

we developed a strong sense of what we value, what we do well as an

organization, and what we want to achieve. As a result, we created a path

to change more lives by saving sight and pursued it wholeheartedly.

Our work is motivated by the recipients of our programs. So our plan

included numerous strategies that improved the way we helped people

regain and preserve their vision. In the pages that follow, you’ll find many

examples of our progress this past year, including:

• The introduction of Autologous Serum Eye Drops, an innovative

use of our existing capabilities to help people in a new way

• A 7.5 percent increase in corneal tissue distributed for transplant

• A record-breaking year for our KidSight program.

By making greater investments in our planning and our programs, we

were able to serve more people and to heighten our impact on each

individual recipient.

These achievements have been collaborative, which means we have you

to thank. Our staff and board members worked extremely hard to deliver

our programs day in and day out, but it is only through heroic cornea

donors, generous financial contributors, and supportive organizational

partners that we can thrive and make these investments in our programs.

So we thank you for your support.

Please join us in celebrating last year’s successes. Then renew your

commitment to our mission this year because it’s true that together, we

change lives by saving sight.

Sincerely,

Al Blumenberg Tony Bavuso

Identified opportunities to reduce costs in the tissue recovery process, including renegotiating reduced serology costs, implementing a cost-saving courier system in Kansas City, redesigning supply packs, and reducing overall supply costs.

Successfully unified the organization’s programs under a new name: Saving Sight. Rebranding included the launch of a new website and redesign of all marketing collateral.

Implemented two new processing procedures to increase Saving Sight’s clinical service: Autologous Serum Eye Drops and Long-term Preservation corneas. Remodeled the Kansas City lab to meet needs for cutting-edge clinical processes.

Improved tissue screening and evaluation practices, which resulted in more tissue being available for surgical use.

Increased overall placement of tissue with a positive net margin by 3%.

Cornea Donation & TransplantationSince 1960, Saving Sight has coordinated cornea donation and the distribution of corneas

for transplant. Today, we operate in Missouri, Kansas, and central Illinois, and we distribute

corneas to transplant surgeons in those states, the rest of the U.S., and around the world to

help people receive the precious gift of sight.

Pilot Receives Cornea Transplant & the Sight He Needs to Fly

With renewed vision and medical clearance to fly, Laren was back in the air for his first post-transplant flight in January. “It was just unbelievable,” he recalled. “I’m so thankful that I’m able to keep flying, something I love to do. I’m able to keep flying these jets. So I can’t express enough thanks to the donor who returned my sight.”

Veteran Will Enjoy Her Retirement Thanks to Corneal Transplants

Patricia became eligible to receive a cornea transplant in her right eye, which rescued her from more than five months of total blindness. Thanks to her optimism, supportive medical care, her donor families, and following her doctor’s instructions, Patricia is on the road to enjoying her retirement with clear vision.

Donor Mother Shares Her Experience with Donation

When Carol lost her 30-year-old son, Mark, she learned that he had made the pledge to become an eye donor. Her son’s heroic decision to donate impacted the lives of two cornea recipients as well as Carol and the rest of Mark’s family. She encourages others to consider donation and correspondence because it changes lives for the better.

Researchers under Dr. Rajiv Mohan use eye tissue for gene transfer studies, human organ culture model development, and medical, postdoctoral and clinical fellow teaching.

Murphy-Russell Laboratories, UC Davis School of Medicine | Davis, CA

Doctors Murphy and Russell study eye tissue and publish their findings on how cells located around the base of the cornea are influenced by interacting with intricately patterned surfaces.

Numedis, Inc. | Isanti, MN

Saving Sight provides research and training tissue to aid in the development of corneal preservation solutions.

Schepens Eye Research Institute | Boston, MA

Under Dr. Bruce Ksander, researchers study markers on cells in and around the retina that, if present, could be used to prevent or repair retinal damage.

Saving Sight changes lives by supporting research facilities that seek the causes and cures of eye

diseases. Last year, we provided 1,266 donor eye tissues for this purpose. Here’s a snapshot of how

some research teams used those tissues.

KidSightOur trained technicians have screened more than 350,000 Missouri children since 1995.

Using a photoscreening device, we quickly and noninvasively screen children ages 6 months

to 6 years old for common causes of childhood vision loss free of charge, and we refer

at-risk children to eye doctors for examination and treatment.

KidSight Helps Jesse Succeed in School and on the Baseball Field

Cheri describes Jesse, her youngest son, as “a rambunctious superhero” with tons of energy. And now, with his vision being restored, he’s able to be a superhero on the baseball field, too, like his older brothers. Before the vision screening, “we tried to play catch with him, but he couldn’t and didn’t seem interested,” Cheri said. “Now he’s very interested. We think it was the vision that was throwing him off.”

Hannah’s Sight is Preserved Thanks to KidSight Referral

Cassidy describes her daughter, Hannah, as a complete social butterfly who loves to learn, read, and draw and who has an imagination that’s “out of this world.” “As long as someone’s telling her she’s cute, she’s content with her glasses,” Cassidy said. “I’m extremely thankful for the program you offer, free of charge, to the schools. I appreciate that as a parent.”

KidSight Helps Layla Obtain Healthy Vision to Read

“Layla does seem to be able to read better,” said her mother Delaina. “With her glasses on, she can read for longer periods. Earlier, her teacher said Layla was behind. But at the end of the year, the report card said she reached the first grade reading level so she’s where she should be. We know the screening made a big difference.”

Missouri Head Start Association Names

Saving Sight an Outstanding Partner

In 2013, Missouri Head Start served

20,080 families, and KidSight

screened 7,854 children at 190

Missouri Head Start sites. “We were

selected as an Outstanding Partner

because we screen at so many

centers each year,” said Tamara

Oberbeck, RN, M.Ed, director of the

KidSight program. “The Missouri

Head Start Association understands

that healthy vision is important to

success in school. And KidSight

gives free health information to these

committed parents so the children

with vision problems can get early

treatment.”

Community Vision Programs

Our community vision programs change lives locally and globally. We screen adults at

Missouri businesses, health fairs, and community events to detect glaucoma and age-related

macular degeneration (AMD). We also collaborate with the Missouri Lions to collect used

eyeglasses and recycle them for distribution abroad.

Healthy Vision Screenings Screened 2,561 adults for glaucoma & AMD.

Eyeglass RecyclingMore than 60,000 pairs of eyeglasses collected.

Jefferson City Residents Distribute Recycled

Eyeglasses in Mexico

Since 2010, Larry (right) has

organized mission trips through his

community and Concord Baptist

Church to distribute used glasses

in central Mexico. The group has

provided more than 15,500 pairs

of glasses to people in need,

nearly all of which were originally

collected by the Missouri Lions

and Saving Sight.

We’re pleased to begin offering autologous

serum eye drops (ASED) in Missouri. Applying

our technology, aseptic technique, and clean

processing environments, we prepare ASED

in our Kansas City and St. Louis facilities.

Because ASED is made with the patient’s

own serum, the drops are non-allergenic and

avoid the risk of disease transmission. ASED

has been proven successful in treating a wide

range of ocular surface conditions, including:

Dry eye

Sjogren’s Syndrome

Graft vs. Host disease

Stevens-Johnson Syndrome

Superior limbic keratoconjunctivitis

Neurotrophic keratitis

For 30 years, human serum has been

considered an excellent substitute for tears

due to their biochemical similarities. Saving

Sight dilutes the patients’ serum, creating

eye drops that offer a safe, natural, and

preservative-free alternative or addition to

other therapies. For more information, visit

saving-sight.org/ased.

Misko was a leader in Saving Sight’s eye banking program. When he passed away, we partnered with Numedis to cosponsor a memorial scholarship, which supports promising eye banking technicians’ travel to the EBAA Technician Education Seminar. “I believe this is a particularly meaningful way to honor Jachin because it represents the impact he had on eye banking,” said CEO Tony Bavuso.
