2 CHAMBER UPDATE, October 2016

Chamber Members:

Thank you. What a warm welcome I have received as I get started in my new role as President/CEO of your Chamber. I have met members at the Business After Hours, The Taste of St. Mary’s, at meetings here at the Chamber and at other community events. I have even had members call me to introduce themselves. The reception has been warm and enthusiastic, and it is appreciated.

As I talk with members, I am asking for their ideas and observations about the Chamber, and while some are perfectly happy with what we are doing, others have some great ideas and constructive feedback. I hope over time you will see a positive response to the ideas that are being offered.

One other theme is also clear as I talk with members. We have a great mem-bership, strong leadership on our Board and on our committees, and a great staff. I want to thank Donna Lange and Barbara Kane for their kindness and support as I learn how we do things at the Chamber. As many of you know, the Chamber has a contract with the County to staff the Welcome Center in Charlotte Hall, and the group that works there has also been supportive during this time of transition.

I also want to salute the leadership Bill Scarafia provided over the last four-teen and a half years. So much of the strength of the Chamber, the vitality of our events, and the good reputation we enjoy in the community is a result of his good work, and I look forward to building on that.

In the coming months we will be looking at our events, our committees, and at all of our member benefits and think about how we might improve and expand, and perhaps pare back as necessary, to make sure the Chamber is playing the role its members desire. I have a Chamber background so I will have ideas and suggestions as we review and meet the challenges ahead.

Please continue to reach out and offer your observations and ideas. I look forward to meeting more of you and working with you in the months and years ahead.

4 CHAMBER UPDATE, October 2016

Monday, August 22, 2016 marks the official placement date of the first home to be used by a homeless veteran to live in while re-establishing their lives at Greenwell. Reaching a milestone such as this is the ultimate example of community collaboration. As this collaborative effort continues, it is just the first step toward helping provide homes for all those who have served us. This small step is just the beginning of the many needed to help end homelessness for our local veterans.

Patuxent Habitat for Humanity, Three Oaks Center, Dr. James A. Forrest Technology Center and the Greenwell Foundation reach the first major milestone in their initiative with the help of Dan Orwig, owner of First Rate Con-struction as he transported the home from the James A. Forrest Tech Center and placed it at Greenwell.

The Three Oaks Center has assisted the Greenwell Foundation with refinement of the program to create the overall best environment for the veterans while they live on the nearly 600 acres of landscape.

Students at the Dr. James A. Forrest Career and Technology Center spent their 2015-2016 school year building out the exterior of the home.

Patuxent Habitat for Humanity has partnered to help finish the interior of the home, and has provided assistance from local contractors. Andy Shizak, owner of Blake Creek Design, John Quirk from A Better Plumber, Austin Davis, Vice President of W.M. Davis, Inc., are the local contractors that have agreed to assist us with the completion of this home. Patuxent Habitat for Humanity is providing direct volunteer support and knowledge about the best building practices for this unique type of home.

The Patuxent River Chapter of the United States Navy Supply Corp Association cleared the land to prepare it for the home and the United States Naval Academy Mid-Shipman Engineering Leadership students are designing and building a deck for the home. The local Junior Navy ROTC will plant landscaping that provides both privacy and beauty for the veteran.

While Three Oaks Center continues to provide guidance and Patuxent Habitat for Humanity continues to sup-port the efforts to finish this home, students from the Dr. James A Forrest Technology Center will begin construction on the second home. Patuxent Habitat for Humanity continues to provide assistance to our local veterans through our Veterans Critical Home Repair Program. Through this program we have provided critical home repairs to over 17 local veterans, affording them the opportunity to age in place gracefully. We ask that you join in all of our efforts as volunteers, donors or advocates.

Community sponsors, SAIC, AMEWAS, GTMR, Inc., J.F. Taylor, Hollywood Lions Club, Northrop Grumman, Precise Systems, Inc., Southernwood Roofing & Siding, Wyle, Elks Lodge of St. Mary’s County, Compass Systems, Inc., Toyota of Southern Maryland, Smartronix, Inc., Winter’s Heating & Cooling and an anonymous donor have all stood behind this initiative from the beginning. The support of these sponsors has directly purchased the materials necessary to build the first home.

St. Mary’s Hospital Foundation’s 29th annual Gala to benefit MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital will be held Friday, Nov. 18, at the Hollywood Social Hall. This year’s event, “Viva, A Night in Old Havana” offers guests a chance to spend an exciting evening submersed in the rhythms and old-world charm of this magical city.

Proceeds from the Gala benefit numerous programs at MedStar St. Mary’s, a not-for-profit hospital serving the community for more than 100 years. In 2016, foundation donations funded five scholarships, as well as other hospital projects.

Scholarships were awarded to students planning to pursue degrees in health care. In 2015, the Foundation donated $150,000 for a new GE Monitoring System, which significantly improves patient monitoring and allows quicker, easier uploading of pertinent information to a patient’s electronic medical record. Twice each year, the Foundation also supports the hospitals’ annual Daisy Awards program, which recognizes nurses who provide outstanding care to our patients.

The Foundation is seeking support from local and national companies and organizations. Multiple sponsorship lev-els for businesses are available. Levels range from $850 to $15,000, allowing business owners to select a sponsor-ship appropriate for their company or organization. All sponsors will be acknowledged in the event’s programs and will receive appropriate recognition throughout the evening.

Information about the various levels of Gala sponsorships and sponsor packets are available by calling 301-475-6455. Visit MedStarStMarys.org/Viva for more information.

Dedication of Renovated Spring Ridge Middle SchoolSeptember 20, 2016

While smoke may mean fire, at Spring Ridge Middle School a fire in 2013 meant much needed renovations would happen sooner rather than later. The fire in a classroom, which occurred when the building was empty, damaged nine class-rooms but fortunately did not lead to any injuries. It did cause renovations to be accelerated at a total cost of $25 million, $10 million of which came from St. Mary’s County.

A dedication ceremony at the school on September 20 was attended by nearly one hundred people including many elected officials, Superintendent of Schools J. Scott Smith, school principal Wendy Zimmerman and all former Spring Ridge principals, two teachers and four students. Many of the

speakers reflected on the challenges of continuing to attend class and operate the school while renovation construction occurred. Others spoke positively of the contributions made

by many to make the improvements in a timely fashion, and all seemed to agree that the finished product made the school an even stronger asset for the community.

MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital’s Marketing, Public Relations, and Philanthropy (MPRP) Department earned a total of five healthcare marketing awards from the Aster Awards Program and the Healthcare Marketing Report (HMR). The Aster Awards Program is an elite competition dedicated to recognizing excellence in medical marketing and HMR is a publications group focused on marketing news and information from around the nation in the field of higher education and healthcare.

Although the MPRP department has been earning Aster Awards and HMR Awards for the past 10 years, it’s the second year in a row receiving two Aster Gold Awards for, The Pulse, the hospital’s monthly internal newsletter for associates, and promotional material for the hospital’s annual Gala Fundraising Event (2015 Diamonds Are Forever). Held each November, the Gala raises thousands of dollars for hospital scholarships, capital projects, new equipment and various other hospital improvements.

MedStar St. Mary’s won two Silver Aster Awards, one for a pocket folder marketing piece designed to hold various flyers, publications and brochures and one for Healthy Living, a quarterly magazine mailed to nearly 100,000 homes throughout Southern Maryland. In addition, promotional materials for the 2015 Diamonds Are Forever Foundation Gala also placed at the Bronze level for Advertising Awards through HMR.

“I believe our team approach plays a huge role in the quality outcome of these projects and is reflective of our service values hospital-wide,” said Holly Meyer, Director of Marketing, Public Relations and Philanthropy at MSMH. “It’s encouraging when our hard work is recognized among thousands of entries across the nation in our industry.”

At a ceremony at the Chesapeake Building in Leonardtown on Tuesday, July 26th, Bay-CSS Former Board President and Current Board Member, Mike Mead, received the Volunteer of the Year Award from the St. Mary’s County Commission for People with Disabilities.

“Mike has changed the disability community in Southern Maryland. He believes people with disabilities should live and work in their communi-ties, and he’s spent his life proving it.”, shared Bay-CSS’ Executive Director, Mitzi Bernard. Mike has volunteered on the board of Bay Community Sup-port Services for 15 years in various leadership roles including serving as president for 13 of them. Throughout the years, Mike has served as Chair of the Development Committee, Strategic Planning Committee, Executive Committee, and Nominating Committee in addition to spearheading and

overseeing various fund raisers on his own including the St. Mary’s Walk, Run and Roll for the past three years. In addition, he’s found time to personally do repairs at group homes and help organize the work done at group homes through United Way’s Annual Day of Caring.

Mike takes his belief one step further by also volunteering for the United Way where he’s spent countless hours speaking to companies and volunteers about the importance of community service. Mike exemplifies the term “com-munity leader.” He’s a volunteer who puts his heart and soul into changing not only his community but the lives of people with disabilities.

The College of Southern Maryland will open the 2016-17 Ward Virts Concert Series with classical pianist Brian Ganz at 3 p.m. Oct. 9. Ganz’s performance is the first of six in the annual series, all of which are held at the Prince Frederick Campus, 115 J.W. Williams Road, Prince Frederick in the Multipurpose Room 104 of Building B. The season opener of the new season is a memorial concert dedicated to the series’ namesake Ward Virts, a talented Southern Maryland pianist who passed away unexpectedly in 1993.

“For more than a decade, the Ward Virts Concert Series at CSM’s Prince Frederick Campus has hosted free per-formances by regional and national world-class artists and groups. Every performance features our concert grand Bösendorfer piano which was donated to the campus by the friends of Ward Virts,” said Dr. Richard Fleming, vice president and dean of the Prince Frederick Campus. “This is truly a wonderful opportunity for residents to experience musical performances in a local setting and at no cost.”

A group of Virts’ friends and classmates conceived the Ward Virts Piano Project to bring the love of life, beauty and music that Ward embodied to a new generation of Southern Maryland students, performers and appreciative audiences. Pianist Ganz has performed in the series since its inception. Ganz is widely regarded as one of the lead-ing pianists of his generation. A graduate of the Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University, he has appeared as a soloist with such orchestras as the St. Louis Symphony, the St. Petersburg Philharmonic of Russia, the Baltimore Symphony, the National Symphony, the National Philharmonic, the City of London Sinfonia and L’Orchestre Phil-harmonique de Monte Carlo. Ganz has been fulfilling a 10-year project, “Extreme Chopin,” started in 2011 in which he will perform the well more than 200 complete works by Frédéric Chopin at the Music Center of Strathmore in Bethesda. “There isn’t much about Chopin that Brian Ganz doesn’t know,” The Washington Post wrote. “His delight and wonder in this music seem to grow, apparently without bounds, as time goes on.”

Admission is free, and seating is open but limited. No tickets or reservations are needed. All performances begin at 3 p.m.; doors open at 2:30 p.m. For information, contact 443-550-6011, [email protected] or www.csmd.edu/community/the-arts/music/ward-virts-series/index.

The complete schedule for the 2016-17 Ward Virts series is Brian Ganz (piano), Oct. 9; Jacques Wieciech (coun-tertenor), Nov. 13; Michael Adcock (piano), Feb. 12; The Eric Byrd Trio (jazz), March 12; Hannah Baslee (mezzo-soprano), April 9; and Ara Gregorian, (violin) May 14.
