Shane Doan. No, that’s not who I interviewed, but he was definitely part of the conversa-tion. For those of you who don’t know, Shane Doan is a Canadian professional ice hockey forward who serves as captain of the Arizona Coyotes. (That’s our hometown hockey team – just FYI.) He has played his entire career with the Coyotes. According to Ryan, Shane not only is faithful to Arizona, but he’s also a really great guy. He owns a cowboy ranch somewhere in Arizona that he opens up to all kinds of people in the community just out of the goodness of his big ‘ol Arizona heart. Race, religion, color, whatever, he doesn’t care … he’s just a really great guy. At least, that’s what Ryan likes about him the most.

This, of course, gets to the heart of Ryan Hudson. It was the answer to my question, “If you could have dinner with anyone, living or dead, who would it be?” To which Ryan replied, “Shane Doan”.

Ryan Hudson was raised an Arizona kid. He has lived his whole life in Mesa. He attended ASU and got his B.S. degree in Civil Engineering. His dad worked for United Metro Materials (now part of Cemex), so Ryan has had a real-life under-standing of construction and materials, particularly. Is it any wonder that he would end up in the business.

When Ryan was a kid his family spent weekends boating on the local lakes with family friends. The friendship lasted a lifetime and though Ryan doesn’t own a boat of his own, his dad still does. Funny thing about the family friends, though. The other family had a daughter, Kate, about the same age as Ryan. Knowing each other as friends at 10 the relationship turned into high school dating and eventually tying the knot about two years ago in Munds Park, AZ. They both attended ASU at the same time but his long-time sweetheart studied Elementary Education.

Still working on his degree at ASU, the City of Mesa hired him as an Intern, giving him the opportunity to put his education to work in a practical environment. After graduation, Burgess & Niple offered him a full-time job and he worked for them for about two years before the City coaxed him back. Knowing how important loyalty is to Ryan (back to Shane Doan), I’m not surprised he would return to the City who gave him his first taste of real-life engineering. He’s been with the City for nearly two years.

Ryan currently works in the Engineering Department as a Project Manager but he confided in me that he is making a lateral move into the Transportation Department to be a Transportation Engineer. In his current role, Ryan has been responsible for managing a wide variety of projects including street reconstruction, multi-use pathways, parks, facili-ties improvements, and water resource projects. All good stuff, but he’s really wanted to spend more time on trans-portation projects, hence the planned lateral move.

I asked him, “What is the most complex project you have ever worked on?” and he told me it would have to be the Rio Salado Pathway project. His explanation of “complex” included things like, “federal funding, lots of approvals and com-munication with a lot of different folks at various agencies”. My next question, “What was your most fun job to work on?” To which he replied, “The one I’m on now”. He’s managing the renovation of the catwalks and rigging at the Mesa Amphitheater, a project that he would have never imagined being a part of. It has been a very hands-on project that has required continuous field adjustments and quick decisions to meet the expedited schedule.

Oh, did I forget to mention… while we are discussing a planned lateral move, Ryan is also studying for the P.E. exam in October and is the proud father of two boys … one 3 years old, Trevor, and the other 9 months, Andrew. Besides studying on weekends, he plays golf, hikes, camps and is in a neighborhood men’s soccer league (indoors, of course).

It’s a good thing he’s young. I was exhausted just interviewing him.
