History of the Celebration of Urban Youth
Young Women’s Mentoring Program
Graduating Youth Mentors
The Celebration of Urban Youth began in 2006 as an event sponsored by the Min-
nesota Twins and the Pohlad Family Foundation. Since 2006, the Celebration has
grown into a grand evening affair with a chance to hear from and recognize Youth
Leaders and Community Partners of YouthCARE. Past events have been hosted at
Travelers Insurance and U Garden (owned by a Camp Sunrise Alum). This year’s
Celebration of Urban Youth is the 8th Annual event and largest one yet! Thank
you for supporting YouthCARE and helping us grow!
The Young Women’s Mentoring Program is a year round community based
multicultural youth mentoring and development program focused on building
the leadership, employment readiness and life skills of girls and young
women, 6-18 years old, living in low-income public housing communities. This
multi-level mentoring program provides key guidance and support to girls and
young women by utilizing team, group, and one-on-one intergenerational and peer
mentoring relationships.

Champion of Urban Youth Award
YouthCARE is pleased to announce the creation of the Champion of Urban
Youth Award. YouthCARE’s award was created to recognize individuals and
organizations who have championed efforts to provide educational, cultural and
recreational opportunities for urban youth. The 2013 Champion of Urban
Youth has been awarded to General Mills Yoplait in appreciation of their 20
year partnership with YouthCARE’s Camp Sunrise program. Since the beginning
of the partnership in 1994, over 1,000 General Mills Yoplait employees have vol-
unteered for work days at Camp Sunrise and helped with tasks such as setting up
tents, organizing equipment, grounds projects, cleaning, and wood splitting.

YouthLEAD
YouthLEAD (Youth Leadership, Education & Diversity) is a year round pro-
gram focused on developing youth leadership and employment skills
while building multicultural friendships among youth, 13-18 years old, through
positive after school and weekend activities. Annually, 175-200 youth partici-
pate in YouthLEAD programs and activities. YouthLEAD has a strong empha-
sis on bringing together youth from diverse backgrounds to learn about oth-
ers, better understand and appreciate cultural differences and build multicul-
tural friendships. A primary focus of the program is to provide a link between
the community built at Camp Sunrise and the participant's home communities
in Minneapolis and St. Paul. Program activities include: the Youth Advisory
Council, Community Service Stars Program, Social & Recreational Activities,
Social Mentoring, and Camp CAMERA. In 2012, YouthLEAD programs ex-
panded to include components such as “Teen Tech,” “Arts & Culture,”
“College Knowledge,” and “Health & Wellness.” Additionally, for the very first
time for Summer 2013 YouthLEAD will be offering “Teen Takeover” which is
a 7 week long day-camp which offers programs ranging from sports to science

YouthCARE Mission & Programs
Camp Sunrise is a ten-week residential summer camp for 250 Minneapo-
lis and St. Paul youth, 13-18 years old. Youth participate in one-week sessions
(Crew Week), two-week sessions (Veteran Crew) or a 10-week Leadership
Training Program (Junior Counselors and Counselors in Training). Activities
include teambuilding and intercultural experiences, outdoor and environ-
mental education, canoeing and camping experiences, and service projects that
help preserve the St. Croix Scenic Riverway.
Camp Sunrise empowers youth to believe in themselves and their ability to
achieve and succeed in all areas of life. The program benefits the Twin Cities
communities by preparing urban youth to become confident, productive and
self-sufficient adults, and by building cohesiveness between youth and adults of
diverse backgrounds and cultures – creating an environment where youth and
adult community members are able to work together, respect each other and
achieve life success.
YouthCARE’s mission is to promote respect for self and others, develop
future leaders, and provide youth with positive multicultural activities and
relationships with caring adults.
