Baptist Theological Seminary at Richmond officially welcomed her third president, Linda McKinnish Bridges on July 1, 2017. Dr. Bridges was selected after a comprehensive nationwide search led by a BTSR committee consisting of trustees, faculty and staff, with assistance from AGB Search.
A native of Henderson County, NC, Bridges brings a
wealth of experience as a theological educator and
academic administrator. She earned her bachelor’s
degree in religion and education at Meredith College,
a master of divinity (MDiv) and PhD in New Testament
Studies and Greek from the Southern Baptist
Theological Seminary, and a master of business
administration (MBA) from Wake Forest University
School of Business. Ordained to the Gospel ministry in
1990 by the Northminster Baptist Church in Richmond,
Bridges has fulfilled her calling in both church and
classroom.
Bridges served as the founding professor of Biblical
Interpretation, Ancient Greek, and New Testament at
BTSR from 1991 to 2001. Following her time at BTSR,
she filled the post of Associate Dean of the School of
I N T R O D U C T I O NPresidential
Arts and Sciences at Wake Forest University, where
she led the in student academic advising, diversity
initiatives, and departmental leadership. As a faculty
member and administrator in the Wake Forest
University School of Divinity, she worked to create
joint degree programs with the WFU School of
Medicine and the School of Law. With the ability to
speak Mandarin Chinese fluently, she helped develop
and implement the first international enrollment
strategy for Wake Forest University, focusing student
recruitment primarily in China. She most recently
served as Managing Director of The International
University Alliance, Shorelight Education, a company
seeking to help international students and US
universities reach their international education goals
in a highly competitive global environment.

WHAT A DIFFERENCE A YEAR MAKES! WHAT A DIFFERENCE YOU MAKE!
Transformation has been the name of the game here at BTSR.
Over the past year, BTSR celebrated her 25th
Anniversary, honored Dr. Ron Crawford for a decade
of service as president, and welcomed Dr. Linda
McKinnish Bridges as the third president of BTSR.
During our Alumni Homecoming Celebration 2017,
Dr. Bridges helped unveil a commissioned painting
by Dr. Tina Bailey, Class of 2011, in honor of BTSR’s
25th Anniversary. The painting depicts a colorful
transformation of a nimble insect through three life
stages: from caterpillar, to chrysalis, to a beautiful
butterfly. Wings open wide, BTSR too is entering a third
phase of transformation.
Transforming Alumni...BTSR now has over 700 alumni serving across the
globe as ministers, non-profit and higher education
leaders. Our alumni are literally changing the world,
and they are returning to BTSR to offer their support
and affirmation. This past year 15% of our alumni made
a gift to BTSR. That’s an increase of about 150% over
the past two years, and we are well on the way to our
ambitious goal of 95% alumni support to the BTSR
Annual Fund.
Transforming Professionals…Professional lay leaders are returning to BTSR seeking
theological education and offering new avenues of
support for the mission of the seminary: to prepare
ministry leaders for the 21st century. As these
professionals respond to God’s call, BTSR is expanding
immersive theological formation opportunities to
doctors, lawyers, and retired professionals who want
to make a difference in the world. These individuals
are also investing in the seminary with transformational
gifts, allowing BTSR to sustain and enhance offerings
for all students and alumni.
Transforming the Church...While recent studies show rapid decline in the
institutional church, BTSR is transforming the Church
through innovative partnerships that invest in the future.
BTSR now partners with Averett University to offer a
M.Div. & MBA, for those called to ministry and business.
BTSR offers a Master of Christian Ministry for those called
to remain in church ministry while they engage in deep
theological study. The BTSR Doctor of Ministry Program
trains ministers to engage contextual leadership, to
better understand and navigate changes within their
church.
As we transform, we have much to celebrate! Our hope is
that this second annual BTSR Annual Report offers you a
snapshot of how the seminary is changing to embrace our
alumni, new students, and career professionals. You make
the difference! We do so as co-laborers, with you and your
church, for the sake of God’s Kingdom in the world.
With gratitude,
Rob FoxVice President of Advancement

T H E B L E S S I N G S O F G I V I N G & R E C E I V I N G
Receiving often is harder than giving. Giving is very important: giving insight, giving hope, giving courage, giving advice, giving support, giving money, and, most of all, giving ourselves. Without giving there is no brotherhood and sisterhood.
But receiving is just as important, because by receiving we reveal to the givers that they have gifts to offer. When we say, “Thank you, you gave me hope; thank you, you gave me a reason to live; thank you, you allowed me to realize my dream,” we make givers aware of their unique and precious gifts. Sometimes it is only in the eyes of the receivers that givers discover their gifts.”
Over this past year, BTSR was strengthened through several transformational gifts.
To those donors and foundations, we say THANK YOU! You will find many of their names within this Annual
Report. However, we don’t have enough pages or ink to capture the generous spirit behind these major gifts.
Many transformational givers grew up within a Baptist ecosystem that placed great value upon what Dr. Walter B.
Shurden called the Four Fragile Freedoms: Bible Freedom, Soul Freedom, Church Freedom, and Religious Freedom.
These individuals learned Baptist freedoms through Sunbeams, Baptist Training Union, Baptist Student Union and
many other formative agencies that invested in Christian discipleship and Baptist values throughout their lives. These
faithful donors desire to see these values and freedoms preserved and advanced through quality theological
education. And for those blessings, we give thanks!
Some transformational givers are new to Baptist life, but they care deeply for the Church. They believe that the
Church of Jesus Christ is God’s means of redemption for the world. They are investing their time and treasure in
quality theological education to invest in the future of the church. And for those blessings, we give thanks!
All transformational givers comprehend more fully what our Lord Jesus taught his disciples, when he said, “It is
more blessed to give than to receive.” Because of their sacrificial giving, these generous friends have given over
themselves – creating an enduring legacy of generosity and of Christian faith. And for those blessings, we give
thanks!
For your gifts – whether they are large or small – we give thanks! Your investment in BTSR gives the seminary a
reason to hope, a reason to flourish, and you are helping BTSR to realize a dream. Thank you!

F O U N D A T I O N S P O T L I G H T : The Eula Mae & John Baugh Foundation
Jackie Baugh Moore is vice president of the Texas-based Eula Mae and John Baugh Foundation. The Baugh Foundation has offered BTSR transformational support for many years, including the establishment of The Eula Mae & John Baugh Chair of Theology and Ethics at BTSR. The following is an interview with Jackie Baugh Moore about her involvement with BTSR, and why her family continues to invest in the seminary:
BTSR: Jackie, tell us about yourself!
Jackie: My parents were in school in Washington DC when I was born but they got back to Texas soon after. We lived in Houston
until I was in high school and then moved to San Antonio. After graduating from Baylor University I taught
in Dallas and then moved back to the San Antonio area where I live now. My husband Kim and I have 3
amazing, grown children, all of whom are Baylor Bears as well. Our oldest son, Sterling, is in law school at
University of Virginia and married to our fabulous daughter-in -law, Jenni. Our daughter, Katie, is working
in Los Angeles and our youngest, Jake, is studying film at Baylor. This year I am the president of the Baylor
Line Foundation which is the former Alumni Association. I also serve on several Baptist and Baylor related
boards and have the privilege of involvement in several areas of CBF life including the Missions Council.
BTSR: How did your family foundation get started?
Jackie: In 1969, Sysco Corporation began as a simultaneous merger of 9 family owned food distribution companies and a common stock offering. My grandparents owned a company that was in that original
founding group. They were both church lay leaders and involved in Baptist ministries and organizations. They
found real joy in giving and loving people. They started the Eula Mae and John Baugh Foundation in 1994 to
continue that legacy. Now we get to experience that joy and be a part of the legacy they created.
BTSR: How did you get involved as a trustee with BTSR?
Jackie: BTSR was the first CBF related Baptist seminary. When it opened in 1991 it was one of the theological leaders in Baptist life regarding women in ministry. Over the years, my family and I have watched
with interest as the seminary produced many outstanding pastors and ministry leaders who now serve across
the globe. BTSR graduates are helping to shape our Baptist identity nationally and internationally, and they
are champions of religious liberty. It is good to be a part of all the good things BTSR is doing!
BTSR: What is your hope for BTSR in the next chapter?
Jackie: My hope is that BTSR will continue to embrace the courageous and faithful spirit that birthed the FIRST seminary in CBF life. I am so thrilled that our President, Dr. Linda McKinnish Bridges, embodies
that courageous spirit! My hope is that all of us in the BTSR community will continue to dream big, create
collaborative partnerships, and blaze the trail for religious liberty and the tenant we hold dear as Baptist
Christians in the 21st century.

“How far does the continuing BTSR story reach? Farther than any of us knows.”
ISAM E. BALLENGER, Retired Duke K. McCall Professor of Mission and World Christianity
The grit and determination of BTSR’s leadership and alumni has left a lasting impact on innumerable souls in its 25 year history. Over the years, BTSR has been blessed and empowered by the generosity of those who have elected to make the school part of their long-term financial plans.
Often, we aren’t even aware that someone has designated BTSR as a beneficiary, and are humbled and inspired when we learn about a bequest or legacy gift that has come our way. Their stories are full of faithfulness, hard work, persistence, and generosity. One such person is Josephine Pile Broaddus. A native of San Angelo, Texas, Broaddus dedicated much of her professional life to the Baptist Sunday School Board in Nashville, Tennessee, beginning her work as an editorial assistant. She retired in 1983 as a Senior Design Editor for youth materials. Her dedication to Baptist life was evident not only in her work at the BSSB, but also in her years of faithful service to the hundreds of youth she wrote for and taught at First Baptist Church Nashville. BTSR was just one of several in a list of beneficiaries that included the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship and First Baptist Church Nashville. She was a gifted writer, editor, and mentor. We are grateful for her legacy and her commitment to Baptist life.
A planned gift to Baptist Theological Seminary at Richmond (BTSR) builds a strong foundation that will enable BTSR to continue preparing servant leaders for ministry in the 21st century.
Legacy gifts ensure that BTSR will carry forward the high standards of theological education including the premier quality of faculty, excellent facilities, equipment and resources for teaching and learning.
A planned gift, by a donor or arranged through a donor’s estate, is an extension of their generosity and partnership in BTSR’s mission during their lifetimes. Some of the ways you can set up a legacy gift to BTSR:
• A bequest. Make BTSR a beneficiary in a new or revised will or add a codicil to an existing will.
• A future gift from an IRA, pension or other qualified plan. You can name BTSR as a beneficiary of such plans.
• A gift annuity agreement. Enter into an agreement with BTSR for a charitable gift annuity or a deferred gift annuity to provide a life income for one or two lives.
• An insurance policy. Make BTSR the sole or partial beneficiary of a life insurance policy. You could also gift ownership of a policy to BTSR for an immediate tax deduction.
• A trust. A charitable unitrust or annuity trust can benefit you, the donor today and the seminary in the future. A revocable trust arrangement can also benefit BTSR in the future.
• A life estate. Make a gift to BTSR of your home or farmland, retaining the use of the property during your lifetime.
If you are interested in arranging a time to explore your planned giving options, please contact Rob Fox, Vice President of Advancement, at (804) 204-1211 or [email protected].

BTSR is blessed with an exceptional group of trustees.
Not only are they tasked with making complex and often difficult decisions about the future of the institution, they
also serve as advocates, ambassadors, and active participants in the life of the seminary. We consistently celebrate
100% trustee giving each year, and this year was no exception. To up the ante, trustees challenged our alumni and
graduating class to also join in supporting the seminary financially by agreeing to match all gifts given by alumni
between April 1 and June 30. Alumni took up the challenge with fervor, ending our year with an unprecedented
15.5% in alumni giving, up from 5.4% in 2015 and 10.9% in 2016. (That’s an increase of about 150% in just two years!)
Trustees matched a total of $9,863.80 given by our alumni in just a three month period. We are thankful for the
energy and passion our trustees bring to our institution, and look forward to a great year ahead!

In May, 2017, eight students participated in the first Mission Immersion Experience (MIE) to the Standing Rock Reservation in North and South Dakota.
The trip was led by D.Min. student Maria Lynn under the supervision
of Dr. Tracy Hartman. Lynn, who has made over twenty trips to the
reservation, is focusing her doctoral studies on cultural intelligence
and empowering missional engagement with the Sioux who live on
Standing Rock. Before the trip, students participated in sessions that
included readings, presentations and interactive exercises to prepare
them for the cultural immersion experience.
On the reservation, students met with several different ministers,
tribal leaders, and lay persons. Our hosts, spanning a wide range
of theological convictions and a variety of approaches to ministry,
stretched us out of our comfort zones and provided rich material
for theological reflection and discussion. Significant time was
devoted to the systemic social issues faced by Native Americans
living on the reservation.
The trip included day trips to urban gardens through a local extension
office, a youth business initiative at the local high school, a community
development initiative, Wounded Knee and Crazy Horse memorials,
and an equine therapy program to name a few. Under the tutelage of
two of the women, students visited the site of the former Dakota Access
Pipeline Protest Camps, raised a teepee, and experienced local cuisine.
The trip met and even surpassed the goals of our Mission Immersion
Program. BTSR looks forward to a long term relationship with our new
ministry colleagues in the Dakotas.

What do a campus minister from North Carolina, a pastor from Myanmar, a children’s minister from Richmond, and an entrepreneur from Mississippi have in common?
These four individuals join at least six other students as a part of this year’s incoming Doctor of Ministry cohort. Their diversity of backgrounds creates a rich environment for learning from one another’s experiences. Throughout the next three years of study, they will engage together in deep conversations about their own leadership while exploring topics most pressing in their respective ministries.
In addition to this outstanding D.Min. cohort, the 2017 incoming master’s level students bring a variety of backgrounds to the classroom as well. From students fresh from serving at Passport Camps this summer to students with several decades of ministry experience already on their resume, this group promises to bring depth and breadth to the student body with their energy and thirst for learning.
The most notable increase we saw this year was in our Masters in Christian Ministry applicants. The incoming class of 2017 doubles the total number of MCM students already in the program. The change to a shorter degree allows many working professionals already engaged in part time or associate ministry positions to pick up the necessary coursework to round out their ministry experience. While the program is open to anyone, our prime candidates are second career students ready to enhance their theological education to better serve their ministry settings.
We are grateful for so many alumni and friends who keep the referrals coming our way. We are never too busy to receive your students, so let us know how we can be helpful!

A L U M N I U P D A T E S
This past year provided many opportunities to reconnect with our alumni. It was a busy year for our staff, as we made our way across the region, sharing good conversation and good food with so many we are proud to call our own.
Our alumni came out and invested their time in thinking and dreaming about the direction of the Church at our first annual Pastors’ School, sponsored by our friends at the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship of Virginia.
Together, we enjoyed the leadership of alumnus, Stephen Cook, during the BTSR-CBFVA luncheon at the BGAV Annual Meeting in Roanoke, VA.
We enjoyed fellowship over a meal at Bistro Aix, during CBF’s ChurchWorks in Jacksonville, FL.
At CBF’s Leading Women Conference in Knoxville, TN, we heard challenging and powerful words from strong Baptist women.
In Raleigh, BTSR celebrated 30 years of the Alliance of Baptists. We give thanks to the Alliance for their role in launching BTSR twenty-five years ago.
Thanks to a generous grant from Hampton Baptist Church, in honor of Rev. Chester Brown, BTSR offered four scholarships to alumni for the Festival of Homiletics in San Antonio, TX. We joined the recipients and other alumni and friends for a Meet and Greet Dinner with President Bridges at Rio Rio Cantina on the Riverwalk, hosted by the Baugh Family.
Our alumni braved a storm to come out for Homecoming 2017 where the 25th Anniversary painting was revealed by Dr. Bridges and alumnae Tina Bailey. By the smiles on everyone’s faces, it looked to be worth the damp trip.
We wrapped up our calendar year at CBF General Assembly in Atlanta and shared a fantastic southern meal at the BTSR Dinner at Pittypat’s Porch.
We are blessed to have these chances to meet our alumni again, to catch up and discover the ways they are using their gifts around the globe.
From pastors and chaplains, to social workers and missionaries, and a myriad other professions, our graduates are embracing and living out their call in various places around the world. In May, we launched an Alumni Update album on our Facebook page as an opportunity to share what our
grads are up to across the globe and how they are working to change the world. The album will be updated monthly. BTSR alumni, we encourage you to share your updates with the BTSR community. No matter where you serve, you are the model of servant leadership that Jesus offered to us all.
If have an update to share, submit an Alumni Update form at btsr.edu/alumni-updates. Be sure to share a picture, too. Help us celebrate God’s work in the world through your ministries.
