We are fortunate to welcome our small community of nearly 43,000 back to school and work today. Yes, today we can return to our normal schedules.

We cannot forget the destruction that Hurricane Dorian caused as it moved across the Bahamas and our neighboring states. Many left in Dorian’s wake are now involved in a true humanitarian crisis – entire communities were underwater, neighborhoods and homes were destroyed, and an undetermined number of lives were tragically lost.

Today, and in the weeks and months to follow, it is important that we remain grateful for the lives we enjoy and offer support all those impacted by Hurricane Dorian. A number of local churches have started relief collection efforts. The Bahamas Red Cross organization is also receiving goods and donations to assist those in the Bahamas. We remind those among us choosing to donate to any relief effort to direct their donations to organizations they know and trust.

SCCPSS IMPLEMENT NEW SECURITY PROTOCOLS AT ATHLETIC EVENTS

Savannah-Chatham County Public Schools continues to expand its security protocols and enhance

safety initiatives across the district. Their work to continuously strengthen security, new screening

procedures were implemented for entry into district athletic events.

The new security protocols were put in place for the benefit of the students, staff and all attendees,

and to keep pace with evolving best practices at public gatherings around the country. The new protocols

mean screening areas will be set up outside of all stadium gates. Bags will be searched and those entering

will be screened using metal detectors. If necessary, additional screening may be conducted. Clear bags will

also be required at athletic events. Each person is allowed one (1) clear plastic bag and one (1) small clutch.

Size requirements and exceptions are posted below.

The expanded security protocols began the weekend of August 30, 2019 at certain games and will

eventually be included at all District athletic events. We appreciate everyone’s cooperation and continued

support in the District’s work to ensure everyone has a safe and enjoyable time at athletic events.

NATIONAL ATTENDANCE AWARENESS MONTH AIMS TO SHOW IMPORTANCE OF

STUDENTS BEING IN CLASS

In September, Savannah-Chatham County Public Schools is joining school districts across the country in celebrating

September as Attendance Awareness Month.

Why is reducing chronic absence so important?

• Students suffer academically if they miss 10% or more of school days—that is as few as two to three per month. • Studies show that children who miss too many days in kindergarten and first grade often have trouble mastering

reading by the end of third grade. Attending school regularly helps children feel better about school—and themselves.

• When children are absent, schools get fewer resources from the state, resulting in less funding to pay for teachers and classroom resources. Chronic absences in kindergarten predict chronic absences the following year, so even the attendance patterns of our youngest students affect funding down the road.

Help us cultivate a habit of good attendance starting in kindergarten, through graduation, giving our children the

opportunity to learn and succeed in school.

September is National Suicide Prevention Month

September 8-14 is National Suicide Prevention Week This is the week surrounding World Suicide Prevention Day. It is a time to share resources and stories, as well as promote suicide prevention awareness. September 10th is World Suicide Prevention Day This is a time to remember those affected by suicide, to raise awareness and to support those who may be suffering. For more information about how to seek help, raise awareness or get involved, visit the following resources:

NEARLY 250 SCCPSS STUDENTS FROM FOUR HIGH SCHOOLS NAMED AP SCHOLARS

Two hundred forty-two Savannah-Chatham County Public School students have been named AP Scholars based on

their scores on College Board Advanced Placement tests at the end of this past school year. The AP Scholar

Awards recognize high school students who have demonstrated exemplary college-level achievement on AP

Exams by scoring a three or higher on three or more AP exams. That number includes: • 48 AP Scholars with Honor, granted to students who receive an average score of at least 3.25 on all AP

Exams taken, and scores of 3 or higher on four or more of these exams • 86 AP Scholars with Distinction, granted to students who receive an average score of at least 3.5 on all AP

Exams taken, and scores of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams • 15 National AP Scholars, granted to students in the United States who receive an average score of at least

4 on all AP Exams taken, and scores of 4 or higher on eight or more of these exams

The SCCPSS AP Scholars attend four district high schools, including: • Jenkins High, 21 AP Scholars, 6 AP Scholars with Honor, 8 AP Scholars with Distinction • Islands High, 12 AP Scholars, 8 AP Scholars with Honor, 10 AP Scholars with Distinction, 2 National AP

Savannah-Chatham County Public Schools had 212 students named AP Scholars in 2018.

First and second grade students at Windsor Forest Elementary School took part in a fire safety day sponsored by The Hartford Insurance Company and the Savannah Fire Department. As part of the event, The Hartford brought the company’s Mobile Fire Safety House to the school and deputized more than 200 students as Junior Fire Marshals! The event included a simulated fire and smoke demonstration in the safety house after students received training on how to respond. There was also an opportunity to meet local firefighters and tour a fire truck. The Hartford has donated $20,000 to Savannah for fire safety as the city ranks No. 20 among 200 U.S. cities with the highest home fire risk according to The Hartford’s Home Fire Index. The Hartford holds Junior Fire Marshal events in cities with high risk to help those communities achieve higher levels of safety and educate children about the importance of fire safety and prevention.
