Animals that live there.

Zebra Zebras eat grass and travel in groups to stay

safe. Giraffe

Giraffes have long tongues that can reach around the thorns to get the acacia tree leaves.

The Giraffes have no predators which allows them to live happily in the warm sunshine.

Lion Lions eat other animals like the zebra. They like to

sit in the shade and stay cool.

Abiotic Features The savannah is warm all year around. The hottest parts of

the Serengeti are usually around 90 Degrees (F) in the summer and the around 50 degrees (F) in the winter.

The Serengeti has about 790 mm of rainfall per year. You won’t see many tall trees in the savannahs because of the little rainfall.

This warm temperature helps all of the animals because they do not have to worry about freezing in the night because it is never really cold.

. The rain helps everything as well. The zebras will then have water to drink and so they will stay alive. And because the zebras live the lions can have lots of food.

It helps the plants because they will have plenty of water to drink but not too much because there is still lots of sunshine to evaporate the water. Some year there is not much rain but the plants have adapted to spare their water amounts.

Resources The biggest resource of the savannah is the

animals. They are used mostly by tourists from around the world. In the olden days people would hunt the animals. They would kill elephants and rhinos for there tusks, and lions for the sheer thrill of the hunt.

Because there is so much sun there, everything could be solar powered. But because there really isn't much to be powered it is kind of useless.

The giraffes have antiseptic saliva. But its not like we are going to go around and getting their saliva!

The acacia trees thorns have some toxins in them. There is not much use for this but you could use them for poison darts if you want!

How has science helped?

There has been a lot of work done to protect the animals from being harmed. They have set up laws, and restrictions that prevent this. Hunting animals is no longer legal and you can get a serious fine if you do.

Resources such as the sun, the thorn toxins, and the antiseptic saliva can be very helpful but nobody has bothered to research how they can be used. There is lots of scientific study to be done that can help to make us aware of resources on the savannah.

Page 11: Savannah Biome

Humans affecting it There are thousands of safaris out in the

savannahs. This is being done because many people are coming and wanting to see the animals. When you are on safari you travel in a van and look at all the animals. There are paths to stay on but sometimes the safari driver goes off the path to get a closer look at an animal. This damages the grass and the plants that the animals eat.

The animals get used to having the vans around them. This interferes with their daily life habits because the humans will be there watching them. The drivers will try to be respectful of the animals but they will still interfere.

Affecting The Savannahs

We haven't really done anything about the antiseptic saliva, or the poison thorns because there really is no point because we already have lots of other ways to get those things.

We know about solar panels and solar power but because savannahs are so far from any civilization there is not really any way to get it.

There is a lot of tourism that contributes to the economy of the people of the Serengeti. Many jobs are created because of hotels, tour companies, tour guides and safari drivers, and tented resorts.
