  • March 2011

We were thrilled to see the strong start to 2011 for Hart Davis Hart. The saleroom at Tru Restaurant in Chicago was packed and bidding was lively for our January 28 and 29 auction. The international market including US, Europe, Asia and South America was well represented in the room via absentee bids, on the phones and on hdhlive.com. Not only were bidders enjoying the great wine list and food pairings at Tru (my favorite was the Earl Grey smoked Kampachi with the Haut-Brion fl ight), but they were there to buy. The auction totaled $4.6 million and was 100% sold and we saw the HDH Index of wine prices increase 10% from its December mark. It was clearly First Growth Bordeaux and Domaine de la Romanée-Conti that led the way, but the market was strong across regions.

Late last year, we discussed the idea for an auction that would exclusively feature the wines of Château Lafi te Rothschild. The legendary wine has led the market and been the focus of countless articles and much attention. We knew of many US collectors that wanted to offer Lafi te at auction - clients that had purchased many of these wines on release or as futures. We wanted to bring these wines to the March auction as a group and provide international buyers with a vast selection of bottles and vintages in one place, all from excellent storage and carefully inspected by our experienced staff.

Back in September of 2008, Hart Davis Hart sold the fi rst of two major offerings from the unprecedented Fox Cellar auction. It was a memorable weekend, as the sale set numerous records and realized over $11 million. The collection featured 130 cases of Lafi te and bidders from around the world came to Chicago to bid on and be a part of the historic event. However, the memory of the weekend that remains for me is not from the saleroom, but from a dining room the evening before the auction. We hosted a dinner in Chicago at Charlie Trotter’s and opened 20 vintages of Château Lafi te Rothschild, including the best vintages from 1970-2003. There was a hush as each fl ight was brought to the table. While the 1986, 1999 and 1998 seemed to steal spotlight, all of the vintages had that ethereal quality that can only be found in the great Château Lafi te-Rothschild. Clients who joined us for the dinner agreed and returned to the saleroom the next day to bid aggressively. The market for Lafi te had clearly lifted off.

This auction, to be held in Chicago on March 19th, will be the world’s largest selection of Château Lafi te Rothschild ever to be offered on the auction block. The sale features 400 lots of Lafi te, spanning 29 vintages from 1961 to 2006 with a pre-auction estimate of $4.3M-$6.5M.

Considering how highly sought and now hard to fi nd Lafi te is, the highlights are simply astounding. A remarkable 174 of the 400 lots to be offered are in original wooden cases. Those collectors looking for formats will certainly not be disappointed, as we will offer 28 imperials, 48 double-magnums, 3 jeroboams, and 20 cases of half-bottles.

Hart Davis Hart is honored to bring you The Lafi te Auction. I hope that you will join us here in Chicago on March 19. Please contact us to discuss the auction, your visit to Chicago, or bidding absentee via www.hdhwine.com or live via www.hdhlive.com. We look forward to seeing you!

    Sincerely,

    Paul HartCEO

“If any wine can be said to be synonymous with ‘The Best’ it must be Lafi te. Lafi te, graded the top wine in the 1855 Classifi cation (when the brokers did attempt to put the wines within their fi ve categories in an order of merit), occupies a particular niche in our imagination. In a sense it has nothing any more to do with its intrinsic merit or superiority, any more than a Rolls-Royce, caviar or a diamond. In some ways it is beyond comparison. It is unique.” Clive Coates. Grands Vins: The Finest Châteaux of Bordeaux and Their Wines (Berkeley and Los Angeles: University of California, 1995)

“What makes Lafi te a particular favourite for many Bordeaux lovers is its wonderful elegance. Winelovers of the old school like to speak about ‘breed’ in a wine. It has always struck me as a slightly snobbish term, but if it means, as I suspect it does, a blend of elegance, poise, freshness, and distinction, then Lafi te, undeniably, has breed.” Stephen Brook. Pauillac: The Wines and Estates of a Renowned Bordeaux Commune (London: Mitchell Beazley, 1998)

AN ENTICING SELECTION FROM THE OUTSTANDING CELLAR OF A LONG-TIME COLLECTOR AND FRIEND

This distinguished group is part of an extensive cellar, carefully collected over the past few decades by a very passionate connoisseur of both wine and food. With the sole exception of the 1976, all wines were acquired by the current owner upon initial release. Given its location in the upper reaches of the Great Lakes, the cellar is naturally cool, with very gradual seasonal fl uctuations between 54°F and 66°F. A partial dirt fl oor provides natural humidifi cation ranging from 50-65%. Many of us at HDH have been privileged to enjoy a wide range of wines from this cellar over the course of the past 20 years, and all have been in exceptional condition.

AN OFFERING FROM THE VAST CELLAR OF A FORMER U.S. AMBASSADOR FEATURING IMPERIALS OF 1978, 1981, 1986 & 1995

We are honored to include this selection from one of the most important cellars in America. All wines were carefully acquired by the current owner from reputable merchants and auctions in London, New York, and Chicago.
