Paul McCartney tour won't be stopping in Las Cruces

Some bad news for Beatles fans. Rumors of Paul McCartney's "Out There" tour coming to Las Cruces failed to

become reality.

ABC-7's New Mexico Mobile Newsroom spoke with Barbara Hubbard, the former director of NMSU's special

events, who confirmed McCartney is not coming to Las Cruces as many thought, and wished.

Hubbard said NMSU had been trying for about 18 months to try and get McCartney for a concert at Aggie

Memorial Stadium. She's still hopeful that he will perform in Las Cruces in the future.

McCartney U.S. tour dates announced so far:

May 22- Austin's Frank Erwin Center

May 29- Tulsa's BOK Center

July 9- Boston's Fenway Park

July 12- Washington National's Park

Amarilloan wins title at Miss Texas Latina 2013 pageant

By Eboni Graham, [email protected]

Cheers and screams filled the room as audience members rooted for their favorite contestant in the Miss Texas

Latina 2013 pageant on Sunday evening at the Amarillo Civic Center Auditorium.

From five finalists Miss El Paso, Latina Ashley Garner, was crowned Miss Latina Texas 2013, and Miss Teen

Amarillo, Bianca Guadian, was crowned Miss Teen Texas Latina 2013.

“I am very excited and emotional right now,” Garner said. “I will do my best to represent us and to win the crown

at the national competition.”

Headquartered in Miami, Fla., the Miss America Latina, Inc., produces the Miss Latina U.S. and Miss Teen U.S.

Latina national pageants, as well as the Miss Latina America of the World international pageant. Miss Latina U.S.

is the first national competition established in the country exclusively for Latinas.

This is the first time the state pageant has been held in Amarillo.

“The state pageant was going to be in El Paso again this year but ... I decided to move it here,” Miss Texas Latina

State Director Juan Arturo Ramirez said. “I think it’s very important for our pageant system to grow in Texas,

we’re one of the biggest states.”

Ramirez, was the city director for Miss Amarillo Latina for four years until his December promotion to state

director.

“The Miss Amarillo Latina pageant is a preliminary for my state pageant now,” Ramirez said. “So now I have the

opportunity to have a state queen and not just a city queen, which is something different.”

Among the pageant contestants competing for the Miss and Teen Texas Latina 2013 state title were Miss Amarillo

Latina 2013 Kimberly Murguia and Miss Teen Amarillo Latina 2013 Bianca Guadian.

Miss Amarillo Latina 2013 Kimberly Murguia, was the first runner-up for Miss Texas Latina 2013.

Last year’s winners, Miss Texas Latina Lizethe Mendoza and Miss Teen Texas Latina Annabel Macias, thanked

their mothers for being strong women and serving as role models in their lives.

Mendoza, a senior at New Mexico State University, plans to pursue a master’s degree in Sociology with a focus on

the border region after graduating in December with a bachelor’s degree in political science and a minor in

business.

As Miss Texas Latina 2012, Lizethe Mendoza said the last year was busy but filled with rewarding experiences.

Mendoza said the biggest thing she’s learned since being crowned as Miss Texas Latina 2012 is self-discipline.

“You have to be very dedicated,” she said. “In this type of sport, you have to tell yourself, okay I need to be here, I

need to be doing this and that’s why it’s so busy because you’re always on the go and you have to push yourself.”

Page 14: Saturday, January 31, 2004 - NMSU Newsnewscenter.nmsu.edu/Uploads/get/11173/newsclips_20130407.pdf2013/04/07  · be held August 18 to 25 in Riviera Maya in the Mexican Caribbean.

During her reign as Miss Texas Latina 2012, Mendoza participated in various community outreach events in El

Paso with Miss Teen Texas Latina 2012 Annabel Macias.

“We do a lot of work at the Children’s Hospital in El Paso,” Mendoza said. “We’re also very involved with the

Child Crisis center — we donate clothes, go and read to the kids and have lunch with them.”

We never left El Paso so mostly everything we did was local, Macias said.

“We made El Paso as big as we could,” she said. “We’ve also been special guests at other pageants so we could get

to know the other queens and share our experiences.”

Having been in the contestants’ shoes year ago, Mendoza said she stresses self-confidence and stage presence when

asked for advice.

“Be confident, even though I know it probably sounds a little cliché,” Mendoza said. “Everyone is scared of being

judged, but in this sport, that’s what you’re doing. You’re walking on stage to be judged.”

Dominican-born Sasha Zacarias, Miss Latina U.S. 2012. said as a judge she looks for someone who exudes

confidence and is true to herself.

“A girl that has personal values,” Zacarias said. “(They) definitely have to be communicative, someone that’s not

shy, someone that can speak to a group of people and someone that’s inspiring to other people.”

Zacarias competed for Miss Rhode Island Latina in 2007 and was second runner-up that year for Miss Latina U.S.

“Because I’m originally from New York, I had the opportunity to compete there,” Zacarias said. “So I did Miss

New York Latina and I was able to represent New York last year and won Miss Latina U.S.”

A key characteristic trait Zacarias attributes to her success is determination.

“Someone I think that has a lot of determination really gets far I think in everything we do in life, not only beauty

pageants,” she said. “We have things that we have to overcome, but when you’re determined and you have that

feeling that you want to succeed, it just brings you so much further.”

Our motto for the entire pageant system is to be more than a model — a role model, Ramirez said.

It is that motto that Mendoza will miss most when passing the title to her successor.

“I’ll miss everything — wearing my sash in front of the girls and feeling like a role model to them,” she said. “Sash

or no sash, it’s all about what you do and how you do it so I’m sure the girls will still see me as a role model.”

Garner’s and Guadian’s prizes include a $1,000 scholarship and a round-trip ticket to Cancun, Mexico, to compete

for the national Miss Latina U.S. competition on August 25, Ramirez said.

“They also get a round trip to Tennessee in which we partner with St. Jude,” he said. “We actually do an annual

donation and we send the winner to present the actual check and spend time with the kids with cancer.”

Garner will represent Texas in the national competition, Miss Latina U.S. The 2013 Miss Latina U.S. pageant will

be held August 18 to 25 in Riviera Maya in the Mexican Caribbean.

Delegates from across the country will vie for the title and right to represent the USA at the international Miss Latin

America of the World competition.

Will the Miss Texas Latina state competition return to Amarillo next year? Ramirez kept his options open.

“We’re talking about Dallas and South Padre. I just have to work with my committee,” he said. “I just want the

state pageant to keep opening up to more and more girls in the whole state of Texas so it’s necessary to move the

state pageant year after year.”

Out There news: New McCartney show for Tulsa; New Mexico, Memphis details

By: Steve Marinucci

Paul McCartney just made his second Out There tour announcement of the day, announcing on his website late

Friday morning he will play May 29 at BOK Center in Tulsa OK. Earlier today, he announced a show July 12 at

Nationals Park in Washington, D.C.

Tickets for both shows go on sale at 10 a.m. local time April 12 at the BOK Center website for the Tulsa show and

the Nationals website for the D.C. show. A special sale for American Express Card holders members before the

general public runs from 10 a.m. April 9 local time to 10 p.m. April 11.

In other developments, a New Mexico newspaper said there won't be a show in Las Crucas, despite earlier reports

that the tour would be making a stop there. The Las Cruces Sun reported that the city is being bypassed on the tour

because it is being re-routed. The show was expected to take place May 26.

Scott Breckner, head of New Mexico State University's special events office, told the paper. "We're disappointed,

obviously, but we understand these things do happen when you start finalizing tours of this magnitude."

And Memphis' @FedExForum Twitter account all but announced the show in that city by sending out a McCartney

Out There banner with the word that an announcement was coming Monday.
