Sixth Sunday In Ordinary Time

The New Testament is explicit: there is one Law of Christ and it is new. Far from abolish-ing the old Law, this Law fulfills it by empha-sizing interior observance. This law calls for justice which surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees. This law is radical because the call of Jesus goes beyond the letter to more authen-tic life. For Jesus, the human heart is decisive. Hatred is prohibited: anger is the beginning of murder. Coveting another’s spouse is for-bidden: there are looks which are as bad as adultery. Repudiation of a spouse is not al-lowed: this can only come from hardness of heart. (Matt19:8). The making of oaths, true or false, is not permitted: it is enough to be fully committed to our word. We who believe that the gospel is not some sweet, indulgent consolation, are confronted by unprecedented demands without compro-mise. We could have the impression of being trapped. Why should we be surprised that there is within us as in the disciples something that is indignant, when Jesus abruptly declares that riches are impediment to the kingdom: “Then who can be saved?” (Mark 10:26). Christian morality is impossible without the support of life in Christ, consciously lived. Without him, we can do nothing. With him, everything is possible. To put on the mind of Christ is the only way to fulfill the law in spirit and in truth.

January 2020 Dear friend at St. Therese Catholic Church, You are receiving this letter because you so gener-ously donated to our annual Holiday of Hope drive. What a great outpouring of generosity! You sponsored a total of 32 families and provided them with so many wonderful and thoughtful gifts! You provided enough socks, toiletries, hats, scarves, and other items for the 418 men, women and chil-dren at the westside Emergency Housing Center and for over 100 men staying at the Albuquerque Opportunity Center. May this new year bring you the very best. Thank you for caring. Sincerely, Dorothy K. Otero Housing Director Cindy Ortega Executive Advancement Director
