American Songbook I Meet the Artists

The last time actor, songwriter, and director Jerry Dixon and comic/actorMario Cantone teamed up, they created Laugh Whore, Mr. Cantone’sTony-nominated one-man Broadway-show-turned-Showtime special,directed by two-time Tony winner Joe Mantello. It featured original songsby Mr. Dixon and stories by Mr. Cantone.

Mr. Cantone also starred on Broadway as Sam Byck in the Tony-winningAssassins, by Stephen Sondheim and John Weidman, and as Buzz inTerrence McNally’s Tony Award–winning dramatic comedy Love! Valor!Com passion! All three of these hit shows were directed by Mantello.Other Broadway credits include Gidger in The Violet Hour (originalBroadway cast) and Stephano (with Patrick Stewart) in Shakespeare’s TheTempest (directed by George C. Wolfe). Off-Broadway Mr. Cantone origi-nated the roles of Terry in The Crumple Zone (directed by Jason Moore)and Matt in Steve (directed by Cynthia Nixon). He is currently starring in ARoom of My Own (with Ralph Macchio) at the Abingdon Theatre.

On Comedy Central Mr. Cantone was featured on the USO Comedy Tour,Chappelle’s Show, Denis Leary Roast, and Joan Rivers Roast. It was alsohome to his first solo stand-up special, Comedy Central Presents MarioCantone. Feature films include Quiz Show (directed by Robert Redford),Sony’s animated film Surf’s Up, In Stereo, The Aristocrats, and Sex andthe City and Sex and the City 2, as Anthony Marentino, as well as theHBO series. Other television credits include ABC’s Men in Trees andVH1’s Hindsight, as well as appearances on Late Night with DavidLetterman, the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, Oprah, Conan, theMartha Stewart Show, Meredith Viera Show, Today Show, and, through-out its 18-year run, multiple appearances as guest and co-host on ABC’sThe View.

Mr. Cantone got his start hosting the local New York children’s show SteampipeAlley, where he slipped in sly pop culture innuendo that adults could enjoy.

Mr. Dixon has appeared on and Off-Broadway, starring in the original casts ofOnce on This Island (Daniel), Five Guys Named Moe (Nomax), Bright Lights, BigCity (Tad), Tick, Tick… Boom! (Michael), and If/Then (Stephen). Most recently heappeared as Brian (opposite his husband) in the original Off-Broadway playSteve. On screen he can be seen as Lyle on He’s With Me (YouTube series, sea-son two) and as Thatch on Gotham (FOX, season three).

As a director, Mr. Dixon has helmed premiere productions of Barnstormer, TakeMe America, Great Wall, Gun and Powder, and the first full production of KirstenChilds’s Funked Up Fairy Tales. Regional direction credits include Show Boat,Bernarda Alba, Two Gentlemen of Verona, and The Full Monty. He has writtenspecial material for USO, CBS, VH1, Comedy Central, and The View. His originalmusical Guess Who’s Coming for Chitlins? premiered at the Thalia Theater inHamburg, Germany.

As a featured soloist, Mr. Dixon has sung with the Belgian National Symphony andNational Symphony Orchestra of Taiwan, and in an evening of Sondheim with theKalamazoo Symphony Orchestra. He has directed the concerts of Tom Kitt andBrian Yorkey, and Tony winner LaChanze for the American Songbook series.

Mary-Mitchell Campbell

Mary-Mitchell Campbell (music director) is a well-known music director, conduc-tor, orchestrator, and arranger in the Broadway community. Her Broadway creditsinclude Finding Neverland, Big Fish, Company, Sweeney Todd, Next to Normal,and The Addams Family. She won a Drama Desk Award for Out standingOrchestrations for Company, and was nominated for two other projects. Ms.Campbell performs frequently with Kristin Chenoweth, Jonathan Groff, LauraBenanti, and Raúl Esparza in concert. She has also music directed many high-pro-file concerts with pop artists like Carole King, James Taylor, Katy Perry, AliciaKeys, and John Legend.

Ms. Campbell is passionate about arts education and poverty reduction, andstarted the nonprofit ASTEP (Artists Striving to End Poverty) as a way to bringartists into the conversation and create programming where the arts encourageyoung people to pursue higher education. She is from North Carolina and holdsdegrees from North Carolina School of the Arts and Furman University. Ms.Campbell has taught on the faculties of The Juilliard School, New YorkUniversity, and Boston College.

Dave Noland

Dave Noland (woodwinds) is a freelance saxophonist, woodwind specialist,and music educator. He has performed with various jazz and classicalensembles, including the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, Vince Giordano and theNighthawks, and the New York, Brooklyn, and Long Island philharmonics.He has also performed with Michael Feinstein, Chita Rivera, Patti LuPone,and more.

Mr. Noland has been a member of six Broadway orchestras. His Broadwaycredits include Follies, Leap of Faith, Annie, If/Then, and Gigi. In 2010 he wasa featured soloist and assistant conductor with Twyla Tharp’s Come FlyAway. He has been a member of numerous cast album orchestras and hasrecorded and/or appeared on television for the Tony Awards, Smash, ABC’sNightline, and Regis and Kelly. He has also recorded as a sideman with vari-ous performers, composers, and arrangers such as Idina Menzel, Hilary Kole,Don Sebesky, and Dave Stahl.

Craig Yaremko

Craig Yaremko (woodwinds) is a dynamic performer on all saxophones, flutes,and clarinets. His 2013 critically acclaimed recording, CYO3 (OA2 Records),features organist Matt King, drummer Jonathon Peretz, and guest guitarist VicJuris. The album was a follow-up to Mr. Yaremko’s 2007 release, Sync (JazzExcursion), which also drew critical praise. He has performed alongside jazzartists Geri Allen, Jerry Bergonzi, Randy Brecker, Rufus Reid, and DaveStryker, among many others. Known for his impeccable section playing, Mr.Yaremko has worked with some of the New York area’s finest big bands,including an almost nine-year run as the lead alto saxophonist with the Cecil’sBig Band (directed by Mike Lee) at the now-closed Cecil’s Jazz Club. A trulyeclectic musician, Mr. Yaremko has also performed with the New JerseySymphony Orchestra, New York City Symphony, and numerous Broadwayand Off-Broadway pit orchestras. He has backed up such artists as ClayAiken, Frankie Avalon, Lou Christie, Linda Eder, Michael Feinstein, ArethaFranklin, Little Anthony and the Imperials, Patti LuPone, Johnny Mathis,Bobby Rydell, Paul Sorvino, Toni Tennille, Leslie Uggams, and Frankie Valli.

Jim Hershman

Jim Hershman (guitar) has cast a wide net as a professional musician. He hasperformed with such diverse artists as Lee Konitz, the Clayton-Hamilton JazzOrchestra, Steve Swallow, Jon Hendricks, the Los Angeles Phil harmonic,Billy Porter, Patti LuPone, Kristin Chenoweth, and many others. In 2005 hereleased his third CD as a leader, Partners in Crime, with longtime Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra bandmates Bill Cunliffe and Jeff Hamilton. His otherreleases as a leader include Small Talk with Eric von Essen and 342 featuring

Marc Schmied

Brooklynite Marc Schmied (bass) has been on the New York music scene for the last 25 years. After studies at The Juilliard School, he began performingin the classical, jazz, and theater worlds. Classical credits include the AlbanySymphony, Hudson Valley Philharmonic, and Manhattan Chamber Orchestra.Broadway credits include Allegiance, Matilda, A Gentleman’s Guide to Loveand Murder, La Cage aux Folles, Evita, On a Clear Day You Can See Forever,South Pacific, Cabaret, and many others. Mr. Schmied performs regularly withTamika Lawrence and her rock band Tamika and the Slay.

Damien Bassman

Damien Bassman (drums) wrote and played the drum/percussion books forthe Tony and Pulitzer Prize–winning musical Next to Normal, If/Then, The ColorPurple, The Addams Family, Hello Again, and High Fidelity. As principal per-cussionist of Absolute Ensemble, he has toured and recorded with JoeZawinul, Paquito D’Rivera, Marcel Khalife, Sarah Chang, and Gregor Bregovic;as a soloist he has appeared with orchestras in Europe, Asia, America, andAustralia. Educated at the Cleveland Institute of Music, The Juilliard School,and Carnegie Mellon University, Mr. Bassman currently teaches at New YorkUniversity and Marymount Manhattan College, and performs on drums forartists including Kristin Chenoweth, Jarrod Spector, and Tamika and the Slay,for which he is also music director and arranger.

American Songbook

In 1998, Lincoln Center launched American Songbook, dedicated to the cele-bration of popular American song. Designed to highlight and affirm the cre-ative mastery of America’s songwriters from their emergence at the turn ofthe 19th century up through the present, American Songbook spans all stylesand genres, from the form’s early roots in Tin Pan Alley and Broadway to theeclecticism of today’s singer-songwriters. American Songbook also show-cases the outstanding interpreters of popular song, including established andemerging concert, cabaret, theater, and songwriter performers.

Matt Berman is the resident lighting designer for Lincoln Center’s AmericanSongbook. He continues his design work for Kristin Chenoweth, LizaMinnelli, Alan Cumming, Brian Stokes Mitchell, Lea Salonga, and ElainePaige on the road. Through his work with ASCAP and several U.S.-basedcharities, Mr. Berman has designed for a starry roster that includesBernadette Peters, Barbra Streisand, Reba McEntire, Melissa Errico,Deborah Voigt, Michael Urie, Stevie Wonder, India Arie, Garth Brooks, BillyJoel, and Sting. His international touring schedule has allowed him to designfor iconic venues such as Royal Albert Hall, the Paris Opera, the Olympia the-ater in Paris, Royal Theatre Carré in Amsterdam, the Sporting Club in MonteCarlo, the Acropolis, the famed amphitheater in Taormina, Sicily, Luna Park inBuenos Aires, and the Sydney Opera House. Closer to home, he has donework for the Hollywood Bowl, Alice Tully Hall, and Carnegie Hall. His Broadway credits include A Free Man of Color, The Rivals,Contact (also in London and Tokyo), Marie Christine, Twelfth Night, and Jekyll &Hyde. Off-Broadway Mr. Stauffer has worked on Promises, Hereafter, AMinister’s Wife, Bernarda Alba, Third, Belle Epoque, Big Bill, Elegies, HelloAgain, The Spitfire Grill, Pageant, and Hedwig and the Angry Inch. His regionalcredits include productions at the Capitol Repertory Theatre, University ofMichigan, Hanger Theatre, Berkshire Theatre Festival, Chicago ShakespeareTheater, and Alley Theatre.
