These are the hardy folk who belong to the first generation of residents to live on a street that so far has been more accus- tomed to strip malls and park- ing lots. Most likely it will be years before this pleasant four- storey structure feels like part of something, before it blends in with the rest of the neighbour- hood. Located on the south side of Lake Shore at Long Branch Ave., the new condo, called the Wa- terford, draws its inspiration from a very traditional aesthet- ic, one with a hint of Gothic in its arched entrances and pointed gables. The use of stone helps enor- mously and though the archi- tecture is anything but adven- turous, it’s nevertheless urban and integrated into its environ- ment, or rather, some idea of what that environment will eventually become. It addresses the street well and speaks a lan- guage of pure domesticity. In the decades to come, this will be the place to be. GRADE: B Christopher Hume is the Star’s urban issues reporter.
