Vision Statement The vision statement of NT Christian Schools is, ‘We desire to be a Christian community, learning together

to live life as God intended, offering hope for the world’.

The vision statement of Sattler Christian College is,

‘Growing in Wisdom; Learning to Love’.

Principal’s Message 2016 was a very significant year for Sattler Christian College as it celebrated its twentieth

anniversary. Sattler Christian College, a campus of NT Christian Schools, is a partnering community

striving to live out its vision, trusting in a faithful and loving God. I really thank God that we are

part of NT Christian Schools. It means that we have been able to enjoy all the benefits of being a

small school while at the same time tapping in to the strengths and support structures available to

a larger network of schools. This has provided financial security and educational ‘richness’ in all

seasons of the school over the past twenty years. In effect, we have access to many staff and

services beyond the Sattler team that can provide expertise and resourcing to the school in a wide

range of ways.

Reflecting on the past twenty years, we are so grateful for

so many blessings. Certainly there have been lots of

challenges along the way but even in these we have seen

God’s amazing love and faithfulness evident throughout.

The school began as a primary school back in 1996 and was

originally called Litchfield Christian School. It was very small

at first, and over the years it has grown gradually to include

an Early Learning Centre and a Middle School. However,

even to this day, we recognise and appreciate the

wonderful ‘strength’ of being a small and nurturing school

community. From the onset we have had committed

parents and staff working closely together in partnership to

provide an educational environment that honours God,

values every child, and assists students to make the most of

their learning opportunities.

Highlights of the school year The 2016 school year included all the usual highlights. There was a great camping program, a

strong creative arts program including dance, drama and music, the Middle School drama

production (The Hobbit), sports carnivals in athletics, cross-country and swimming, and special

theme days and weeks which helped to focus valuable learning experiences in meaningful and

enjoyable contexts.

However, the real

highlight of 2016 were

the twentieth

anniversary

celebrations. A

number of events

occurred throughout

the year culminating

with a community

‘birthday party’ and a

celebratory dinner

during the June long

weekend.

Many past students,

parents and staff,

including all the Sattler

school principals past

and present, joined

together to mark the

occasion, share stories,

appreciate our school

community, and to

thank God for his

faithfulness.

Parents and community A strong partnership between families and the school has been fundamental at Sattler throughout

its twenty years. It continues to be one of the characteristics of the school most appreciated by

our families. This commitment to partnering well together flows out of the school’s belief that God

has given parents in the first instance the responsibility for the nurture and education of their

children. Parents in turn share that task with the school. It was great to see this continue to be

expressed in so many ways

throughout 2016.

One of the distinctives of

Sattler is its small but strong

community and this has again

been well led by a strongly

committed School Council.

They have done this with

prayerfulness, faithfulness,

vision and servant-

heartedness. The Sattler

Christian College Council, a

group of highly dedicated

parents, continued to play a

pivotal role in the governance of

the school. Apart from their usual council meetings they also held a number of open council

meetings which provided a valued

forum for other parents to share

ideas and ask questions.

There were a number of activities

involving school families and staff

working together. Events such as

the Family breakfast at the start

of the year, as well as the

Mothers Day and Fathers Day

breakfasts, and the twentieth

year celebrations were special

times for the school community

that further fostered our

community spirit. Parents also

regularly attend school assemblies, and

come along to support their children and assist at sporting carnivals, excursions and camps.

Facilities

The school has a beautiful bush setting and the buildings have been constructed and located in a

manner that enhances and compliments the natural environment.

In 2016 a number of minor infrastructure projects were undertaken. These included:

Principal’s Office subdivision, (creating an office space for the Enrolments officer), and

Redevelopment of Sattler Car Park and Drop-Off zone (improving safety and parking capacity).

Both of these developments have been appreciated improvements to the school’s life and

functioning. There are no major works planned for

2017. One minor project will involve replacing

the shade sails on one of our basketball courts.

The general condition of school buildings and

facilities is quite good. The oldest buildings

are 20 years old but even these are of solid

construction and sensible design for the

Northern Territory with wide verandahs.

Students throughout the school have

excellent access to computers with group sets

of laptops or iPads in the Primary school, and

a 1:1 iPad program in the Middle School. Each

classroom in the school also has either an interactive

whiteboard or big screen television which maximizes the use of ICT across the school.

Critical Incidents

There were no significant critical incidents in 2016.

School self-assessment Each year the school undertakes a cyclic review of its six aspects of school health and functioning using a School Improvement and Renewal Framework (SIRF). The six areas are:

Christian Identity (Faith Matters)

Care and Wellbeing (People Matter)

Schools & Programs (Learning Matters)

Governance & Leadership (Leadership Matters)

Community & Culture (Relationships Matter)

Finance & Resources (Stewardship Matters)

The school community, staff and parents together, are involved in a process of collecting information, reflecting on the life and direction of the school, and formulating goals for the future in line with the vision of the school. Information gathering occurs in a number of ways including on-line surveys, and feedback and suggestions are discussed in a number of forums including staff meetings, school council meetings, and open council meeting discussions. SIRF recommendations for Sattler Christian College (SCC) developed in 2016 were as follows:

(Faith Matters) That at Sattler we:

(i) continue to develop good relationships with local churches

(ii) assist new staff to understand deeply and appropriately express our Christian identity at

Sattler

(iii) explore establishing a regular prayer meeting for interested students

(iv) explore further ways of expanding student awareness and responsiveness to matters of

social justice and mission

(v) explore further with staff the use of Peacewise

(People Matter) That at Sattler we:

(i) continue to clarify how the Student Wellbeing Team can best facilitate improved catering

for student wellbeing at the school

(ii) continue to refine discipline and related communication processes

(iv) explore ways to involve parents more in the learning journey of their child/ren

(v) explore ways to involving students more in self-assessment, shaping or choosing aspects

of the curriculum, and extension opportunities

(Leadership Matters) That at Sattler we:

(i) explore ways to continue to foster collaborative work of the teaching team including

team-teaching

(Stewardship Matters) That at Sattler we:

(i) explore how we can better manage our human resources, in particular how we can

support and encourage staff well and to foster sustainable workloads

(ii) Continue to explore what additional training would assist Paul (Grounds & Maintenance

Officer) in his diverse and important role of Grounds and Maintenance Officer

(iii) Explore how Sattler can become more financially viable as a school.
