with one meeting scheduled at 10 a.m. With anotherscheduled for 6p.m.However, after thekillingof Kauf-manCountyAssistantDistrictAttorneyMarkHassein Jan. 2013, members of the court cited safety as areason formoving the latemeetingupby threehours.“There are somemeasures you can take to protect

the people who work here in this building,” CountyJudge Carol Bush said in February 2013. “We’re fool-ish if we don’t do whatever we can to protect our-selves.”Precinct 2CommissionerBillDodsoncitedcosts as

another reason to end evening meetings. He said tokeep county employees after hours for the 26 eveningmeetings per year, it costs the county between $2,600and $3,000 per year.Hesaid too fewcitizenscame to themeetings to jus-

tify the expense.“As a taxpayer, I don’t think the money is being

spent wisely,” Dodson said.Severalmembersof the community, including sev-

eral of the current candidates for thePrecinct 2 and 4Commissioners seats, have expressed a desire to re-vert to the originalmeeting times. The court will also discuss the ongoing effort to

begin recording and uploading audio and video ofCommissioners Courtmeetings.Perry introduced the concept in July 2013, saying

the technology needed to record audio and video ofcommissioners court meetings has advanced farenough to be cheap and easy enough for the court toimplement.Other items on the agenda include:•Recognitionof theMilford six-man football team's

accomplishments during the 2013 season;• Recognition of 4-H Gold Star Award and State

Record bookwinners;• Consideration andaction approving anumber of

property sale bids;• Consideration of an interlocal agreement for en-

forcement of the Ellis County Fire Code between thecounty and the city of Alma.

As we reflect on 2013, it hasbeen a year for celebrating, a yearfor sorrow, a year for rebuildingand a year for new programs.April brought another great

year of Bluebonnets. After the2012 beauty of the Fields of Blue-bonnets, we wondered whatwould the 2013 Season hold instore for the trails? But MotherNature blessed Ennis with an-other fantastic year and beautifulflowers and amazing visitors. When the tornado hit down-

town Ennis less than two weeksbefore theNational PolkaFestivalEvent onMemorialDayWeekend,we never thought of cancelingdowntown activities but pushedforward. We did have to do a littlescurrying theweek of the festivalin contacting vendors notifyingthem of location changes andworkingwith the city onanewpa-rade route. But the Ennis Com-munity prevailed and the festivalwas held with record crowds at-tending.It has been difficult seeing the

damage to so many buildings indowntown Ennis while decoratedwith street barricades. But re-pairs cannot happen overnight aswe all would like to see. Fromproperty ownersmeetingwith In-surance Adjustors to workingwith architects for the best struc-tural design, the time and pa-tience required for the finishedoutcome seemedunending. As thecommunity has proven time andtime again, good things will beseen in 2014 for downtown Ennis. In 2013, we also bid a fond

farewell andbestwishes onhis re-tirement to City Manager SteveHowerton. Steve has been CityManager with the City of Ennisfor 32 years andhis successorwillhave large shoes to fill. Steve’slong list of accomplishments fortheEnnisCommunitywill alwaysbe admired. Thanks Steve for ajob well done.

Starting 2014, we welcomed Dr.JohnChapman toEnnis asEISD’snew Superintendent. The National Newspaper Associationcame out a few days ago joining a coali-tion of postal workers and suppliers inopposition of a Dec. 24 decision by thePostal Regulatory Commission to raisethe postal rate by 6 percent. We’re with them, for a number of rea-

sons.The PRC justified

this rate hike as ameans of offsettingsupposed losses fromthe 2007-2009 reces-sion, but it’s fairlyclear that the issuecausing trouble for thepostal service is in-creasing use of the In-ternet instead of themail system. A 2006law gave the country a predictable andstable postal rate, and that proved to be aboon during the recession as companiesand everyday people struggled with theprice of pretty much everything.Digital diversion is not a problem to

address with huge hikes— in this case, one beyond the rate of inflation. Thereare inevitable adjustments necessary tothe way the United States Postal Servicedoes its business, more than just throw-ingmore cost onto the backs of thosewho need the system. That’s an irrespon-sible, quick--fix solution. The increase harmsmore than just

newspapers and other businesses criticalto driving local economies. More cost is adisincentive to use the system in the firstplace for your average consumer, andthat’s just hard fact.We support efforts to ask the United

States Court of Appeals inWashington,D.C. to overturn the PRC’s decision inDecember to unreasonably increasepostal rates. Hopefully, the USPS andPRC look at the situation and find betterways to make the budget balance— fromcutting costs to working on finding effi-ciencies.It’s just not the time for pushingmore

burdens onto individuals and busi-nesses.

Market,YMCAneededOne of the biggest complaints

we hear about Ennis is aboutthings to do.“There's nothing to do” is

heard a lot and frustration hasmounted because the perceptionis nobody in leader-ship cares.Aside from the fun

weekends of thePolka Festival, Blue-bonnet Festival, andFriday night football,Ennis really doesn'thave a lot of activity. The idea that

there's nothing to dois obviously not com-pletely true, but weare lacking. That hap-pens in a town of justunder 20,000 people.Too much competi-tion can kill any two events. However, diversifying what we

have to offer our residents issomething the city, chamber ofcommerce, newly formedGreaterEnnis Development Alliance andothers are working on.Thursday, we reported details

of a farmersmarket. Thismarketneeds vendors and will need thesupport of the local residents.

Hopefully, it'll be a hit and some-thingEnnis is known for in the fu-ture.Personally, I'll be there more

often than not, already budgetingfor how much I'll spend at the

market. It's a great op-portunity to meet anunserved need for ourcommunity. It will getpeople out on Satur-daymorning, andpos-sibly helpreinvigoratewhat hasbeen a strugglingdowntown.Details of the

YMCA plans forEnnis are not naileddown yet, but the pro-grams to be offeredare already on thedrawing board. This

will be a great draw for our youthand their parents to get togetherin an organized fashion. One day,we may be able to grow the pro-grams to the level of what you cansee inWaxahachie. Like the farm-ers market, it'll be good for ourhealth, too. Most importantly right now, as

our town develops, we are seeingmore and more positive move-

ment. Aside from the market andYMCA, we are going to soon havean Ennis ISD Education Founda-tion, downtown developmentplans, new leadership in our citymanager position and EISD su-perintendent's position, andmuchmore. We've focused on the pages of

this newspaper for severalmonths about the positiveprogresswe're seeing locally. Thatmomentum continues to roll for-ward.Each week, it seems we find

some group looking to deliversomething else to the residents ofEnnis.Weall have a passion andweall

have ideas.Whatwe're seeingnowis those ideas are being cultivatedby their originators and sup-ported by the public. This is whatmakes a community.Imagine where we'll be in a

year if we continue to work hardand support one another. It's agreat time to be part of thisgrowth and, more importantly, part of supporting it.

for the coaches; they've been workinghard with me.”Ennis played conservatively, took

calculated shots rather than forcingshots, protected the ball better result-ing in fewer turnovers, focused oncontrolling the pace of the game on of-fense and stood firm on defense.“We talked about getting more to

our sets instead of just letting the kidsfreelance with their shooting. That'skind of been our demise; we haven'tmade a lot of shots. We're putting kidsin an opportunity where they can besuccessful,” Mason said.“We still missed a lot of wide open

ones tonight but we did ball controlkind of like football. Coach (Greg)Davis was really adamant on meabout staying in the sets.”The Lions scored three three-point
