    Cuzco

High in the Andes, in the early 13thcentury, arose one of the greatestempires of the Americas in pre-Columbian times – that of the Incas, the ‘Children of the Sun’.

Their capital was Cuzco, a mountaineyrie of magnificent gold-adornedpalaces and temples, that they believedto be the ‘navel of the world’. Here theInca emperors ruled supreme until theSpanish conquest in 1533. Sacked byFrancisco Pizarro but not destroyed,

fascinating museums filled with Inca andpre-Columbian art and artefacts.

All around Cuzco the hills are dotted withInca sites, including the massive complexof Sacsayhuaman on the northernedge of the city, an astounding feat ofarchitecture that took 20,000 men morethan seven decades to construct – it, too, resisted before ultimately falling to theconquistadors.

the stonework of the city’s templesprovided the foundations for Spanish

churches - of which Santo Domingo b uiltatop Koricancha, the former Temple ofthe Sun, is a great example - while theconquerors’ mansions were erectedupon the flawless stonework of theruined palaces.

Today the combination of Inca andSpanish-colonial architecture hascreated a truly beautiful city, andCuzco is a busy and vibrant centre thatdemands several days to fully experienceits many restaurants, galleries and

    Machu Picchu

Machu Picchu, the fabled “lost city of theIncas”, was constructed at the height ofthe empire’s power and is undoubtedlythe most recognisable image of Peru –and, indeed, of all of South America!

Long sought by the Spanish invaders butnever found, the citadel was abandonedby the Incas after the conquest andlay hidden for almost five centuries, enshrouded by jungle and protected byits mountainous isolation high above theUrubamba River.

It may have been ‘lost’ to the worldbefore being rediscovered by Hiram

Bingham in 1911 but the descendants ofthe Incas have always known its secrets.

You can reach this wonderful site bytaking one of the amazing rail journeysfrom Cuzco or the Sacred Valley to thetown of Aguas Calientes that lies at thefoot of the mountain, boarding a bus forthe short ride up the zigzag road to theruins. Or you may prefer to follow in thesteps of the original inhabitants and trekin along one of the several trails thatlead you to the site.

    Sacred Valley of the Incas

Travel by road or train northwest fromCuzco to the fertile and incomparablybeautiful Sacred Valley, almost 600mlower than Cuzco and sheltered byimpressive mountains. On both sides ofthe Urubamba River, small traditionalvillages and ancient ruins spread outacross wide plains and rugged foothills, stretching almost 100km from Pisacto Ollantaytambo. The valley was thespiritual and administrative heartof the empire and a major centre ofagricultural production for the Incas who

In Pisac, the spectacular hilltop citadelwith its ceremonial centre and aqueducts

displays more of the unrivalled precisionstonework of the Incas.

The Sacred Valley is also renownedfor the colourful local markets wherecommerce is not only for the benefitof tourists but remains an importantritual between villagers. At Pisac’sbustling daily market you can bargainfor beautiful textiles and handicrafts, while in the S unday market at Chinchero, bartering for a wide array of goods is stillcommon practice.

grew native Andean crops in extensivefields and along spectacularly terraced

mountain slopes, using farming methodscontinued virtually unchanged by theQuechua-speaking residents to this day.

The Incas also built several of theempire’s g reatest estates, temples, androyal palaces here in the valley, andthe magnificent ruins are some of thefinest in South America. Ollantaytambo’smonumental stone fortress dominatesthe town below, standing in mutetestament to the Incas’ only victory overthe Spanish – short-lived though it was.

This is one of the world’s great train journeys – so indulge yourself andstep aboard the ‘Hiram Bingham’luxury rail service to Machu Picchu.

The sumptuous interiors of thePullman carriages will take you backto the extravagant era of the 1920s,with musicians playing while waitersserve a delectable 3 course brunch.

On arrival take a short bus ride up tothe Machu Picchu citadel for a guidedtour of the ruins. Following the tour,a fine afternoon tea is served at thehotel overlooking the site.

On your return journey to Cuzco, departing as twilight descends onthe breathtaking mountain scenery, enjoy cocktails in the bar before awonderful 4 course à la carte dinner.

    Off the beaten track

Ayacucho has retained its originalatmosphere more than most and is aremarkably picturesque town filled withcolonial buildings, beautiful housesand museums, as well as 33 ornatelydecorated stone churches (one for eachyear in the life of Jesus). Founded in

1540 by the conquistador, Pizarro, andoriginally settled by a small numberof Spaniards, today it is home to theMorocucho people, a sub-group of theindigenous Quechua.

Their spectacularly colourful processionsand celebrations during Semana Santa(Holy Week) are probably the mostfamous in Peru and over that periodthe town overflows – although withcomparatively few foreigners.

     Ayacucho

If you are the kind of traveller whois always looking for “somewheredifferent” and likes to go beyond thewell-trodden routes, one of our personalrecommendations is the charmingly

authentic Peruvian town of Ayacucho inthe south-central Andes. It is an utterdelight and, although only an hour’sflight from Lima, is somewhere you willrarely run into another tourist.

Historically, the small colonial townsin the rugged Central Sierra were longisolated by their geography and areprobably the least-visited in Peru and asa result have remained the least-spoiled.

    El Camino del Apu

     Ausangate Trek

    5 days/4 nights

The highest point of this remote trek is5,200m – so it’s ‘no walk in the park’!But the returns are great: the stunninglandscapes, the simple yet comfortablelodges in which you stay (providing vitalincome for local communities), and the

satisfaction of an amazing trek in a farless-travelled region. You will need to befit (the longest trekking day is 7-8 hours)and to be well acclimatised before takingon this short trek.

Beginning and ending in Cuzco meansyou can combine the trek with visitsto the Sacred Valley and MachuPicchu – perhaps staying at some veryspecial properties as a reward for yourendeavours.

Potosi (4,070 m) was once the largestcity in the Americas and echoes of itsfabulous colonial past can still be seenin the plazas, churches and municipalbuildings. The city is dominated by themountain that was known as Cerro Rico(rich mountain), the main source of silverin the days of the Incas and later of theSpaniards. Potosi’s mines were once therichest in the world and some are stillbeing mined today using the primitivemethods of old.

    Sucre

The official and judicial capital of Bolivia, the enchanting city of Sucre (2,790 m)was founded by the Spanish in the early16th century. Long isolation has helped topreserve its charm, with its many beautifulchurches and museums, its university(the oldest in Bolivia) and the distinctivearchitecture of white-washed, terracotta-tiled, colonial buildings for which it’s oftencalled the’ White City’ - local laws nowrequire all buildings to be painted in theoriginal colonial white.

      Quito

At 2,850m, Quito is the highest capital

in South America and sits in a valley atthe foot of Pichincha Volcano, a settingthat few cities can match. Once an Incacity, it was conquered by Pizarro’s armyin 1534 and over two centuries Spanisharchitects built formidable temples, monasteries and mansions. The oldcolonial quarter, a World Heritage siteand the largest and best-preserved onthe continent, is quite charming withnarrow cobbled streets; new Quito isquite a contrast with modern buildings, parks, galleries, shops and restaurants.

    Otavalo

    Ecuador’s most famous Indian market

is situated in ‘the land of the Otavaleños’to the north of Quito, a magical regionof terraced farmland, lakes and snow-covered mountains. The market datesback to pre-Inca times and is mostrenowned for its colourful textiles, intricately woven on backstrap andshuttle looms. On Saturday, the mainmarket day, streets are filled withOtavaleños (a sub-group of the Quechua)wearing their typical blue ponchos, whitetrousers and long braided hair.

    Devil’s Nose Train

The Devil’s Nose Railway was one of the

world’s most impressive engineeringfeats of the late 19th and early 20thcenturies. Built between1899 and 1908,for 90 years the line ran from Guayaquilon the coast through the Andes toQuito. After large parts of the line weredestroyed by a severe El Niño weatherevent in 1997, most has now b een rebuilt. This includes the thrilling 800-metredescent of the ‘Devil’s Nose’ switchbackbetween Alausi and Sibambe, a 1:18gradient once considered impossiblefor a train.

    Cuenca

For most visitors, Cuenca is the prettiest

colonial city in the country. AlthoughEcuador’s third largest city, it retainsa pleasant provincial air and the redtiled roofs, cobblestone streets, flowerfilled plazas, and museums make it veryspecial. Home of the famous ‘Panama’hat, Cuenca has excellent Indian marketsselling all kinds of handicrafts and silver

jewellery. A walking tour of the colonialarea is the best way to discover itsdelights and an opportunity to enjoy thewarmth and hospitality of its people.

    Baños

Located in the northern foothills of the

Tungurahua volcano south of Quito,Baños (baths) is a small and lively townof waterfalls (home to more than 60)and the hot springs from which its namederives. It is popular with tourists andEcuadorians alike for its amazing naturalbeauty and its importance as a hub foradventure sports and tours into thesurrounding national parks. GalapagosFeeling like the morning of the earth, suspended in a timewhen only birds and sea creatures existed and man was yetto walk upon the face of the world, the Galapagos Islands havelong been protected by their isolation.

The archipelago lies 1,000 km off Ecuador’s Pacific coast, stretching across an area of almost 8,000 sq. km, and eachisland abounds with species of birds and animals unchanged

over eons and found nowhere else in the world.

Of the 13 main islands, 6 minor islands and myriad islets thatmake up the Galapagos National Park, only five are inhabitedand even now, human population numbers are comparativelylow. As a result, the wildlife - including marine and landiguanas, sea lions, sea turtles and Giant Tortoises, blue- andred-footed boobies, frigate birds and penguins - remainsamazingly unafraid of predators.

A trip to the Galapagos is so many things rolled into one - a cruise,a relaxing holiday and, foremost, a wildlife extravaganza. It truly isthe experience of a lifetime, not only for birdwatchers or wildlifeobsessives but for every traveller who has any interest in seeingthe incredibly diverse and often absolutely unique species of birds, reptiles and mammals.

While it is possible to stay in a hotel on one of the two main inhabitedislands and to explore on a day cruise from a land base, this does havelimitations, with the islands spread across a large area of ocean.

We believe the best way to see all this is aboard one of the cruisevessels that sail between the islands, on an inclusive voyage withon-board naturalists guiding you ashore to explore and experiencememorable ‘close encounters’ with the birds and the wildife.

    Chile

      Wineries

Chile has long been renowned for its finewines and a great number of wineriescan be found throughout the valleysbetween 1-3 hours drive south andwest of Santiago - among them Maipo,Colchagua and Casablanca Valleys. The many wonderful ‘viñas’ are worth avisit, perhaps just to enjoy lunch in theirexcellent restaurants, or to learn aboutthe wine-making and taste a drop of thevintage, maybe paired with local cheeses.

Chile is a fascinating and diverse country, stretching 4,290kmfrom Peru to Patagonia. Highlights include the extraordinary

Atacama Desert, the high ski fields of the Andes, renownedChilean wineries, the picture-postcard Lakes District, and themagnificent glaciers and national parks of Patagonia.

Or if time allows spend a night ortwo in the stunning surrounds. Sometraditional wineries date back tothe mid-19th century with beautifulcolonial houses set amid lush gardens, while others offer the latest architect-designed modernity, with chic andstylish accommodation.

Among our recommendations areLa Casona Matetic, once a family homeset within the vineyards, and Viña CasaSilva, a typical Chilean farmhouse ofthe 1920s, exquisitely restored and stillowned today by the same family.

For a luxurious treat or a specialoccasion, stay in one of Casa Lapostolle’sfour lovely free-standing casitas, eachnamed for one of the grape varietiesgrown at the Viña Clos Apalta winery -Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdotand Carmenere - and each with a livingroom and fireplace, a private terrace forrelaxed al fresco dining, and their own2-person hot tub overlooking the valley.

A slightly ‘kitsch’ but enjoyable alternativeway to visit the vineyards is aboard the‘Tren del Vino’ (Wine Train), travelling inantique rail cars hauled by a restored1913 steam engine (operates Saturdayonly). After chugging through the prettyscenery of the Colchagua Valley, tastingsome wines while aboard, you’ll arrive atthe small town of Santa Cruz for a buffetlunch. Afternoon visits follow to some ofthe local vineyards before heading backto Santiago by coach.

      Easter Island

Easter Island (Rapa Nui) is a place ofmagnetism and mystery, a remotevolcanic speck in the middle of thePacific Ocean, 3,800km west of thecoast of Chile.

While an important archaeological centrewith obvious Polynesian overtones, theorigins of the island’s past inhabitantsare still an enigma; all that remainsof their culture is the extraordinaryspectacle of giant stone statues (moai)scattered around the island and acrossthe slopes of the quarry site on RanoRaraku Volcano. Curiously, the ancientstonework at the many different sitesincludes a wall that is strikingly similarto those built by the Incas in Peru.

    Off the beaten track

Breathtaking natural attractions includetranslucent blue and emerald lakes, vast steppes, immense sparkling whitesalt deposits, hidden hot springs andsurprising geysers. Around occasionaltiny rustic villages, indigenous Aymarashepherds graze their animals and g row

their small crops. Then there is Lake Chungara (4,500m),one of the world’s highest lakes at thefoot of the dormant twin Pallachatavolcanoes. Wildlife teems in and aroundthe lake – vicuñas and herds of alpacas,Andean geese, flamingos, and largeflightless ‘tagua-tagua’ nesting onfloating reed islands.

    Hidden Valleys& Lauca National Park

In far northern Chile you will discoverthe incomparable natural beauty andenvironmental extremes that begin at theAndean volcanoes of the altiplano as you

    travel to Lauca National Park.

While lesser known and far less visitedby tourists than Patagonia’s celebratedTorres del Paine, Lauca is one of Chile’smost accessible parks. At an averagealtitude of 4,000m, this “land lost in time”with its magnificent scenery and exoticflora and wildlife, is a World BiosphereReserve and a bird-watcher’s paradise, with more than 150 bird species includingñandus (rheas) and condors.

Adjoining the park is Las VicuñasNational Reserve, 210,000 sparselyinhabited hectares dominated by thesmoking Volcan Guallatire, wherethe wide open spaces, colours andoverwhelming silence will leave alasting memory.

And a little further south in one of themost stunning areas of the altiplano, the Surire Salt Flats, you will see threedifferent species of flamingos (of the sixspecies that exist in the world) amongthe immense flocks that gather there.

A visit to this 160 sq. km triangular-shaped volcanic island with itspowerfully rugged beauty, carved stonefigures, mysteries and traditions, aswell as the warmth and friendlinessof the local people, is an unforgettableexperience.

A range of comfortable but simplehotels is available close to HangaRoa, the island’s only town, while formore upscale accommodation explora Posada de Mike Rapu and HangaroaEco Village & Spa offer inclusivepackages with a menu of guided tours.Just how long you stay may partly bedetermined by flight schedules androuting but a minimum of 3 nightsis needed to fully appreciate RapaNui - and perhaps to draw your ownconclusions regarding its story?

Argentina Argentina serves up a taste of everything, from the magnificentIguazu Falls in the sub-tropical jungle, to Quechua Indianvillages, and colonial towns like Salta and San Juan. Travel upinto the mountains across beautiful valleys and canyons, visita wildlife lodge, or indulge yourself with the elegance andcharm of a stay on a traditional Argentine estancia.

      Buenos Aires

A seductive port city with a strongEuropean influence and culture andcosmopolitan residents ( porteños -‘people of the port’), Argentina’s capitalis a combination of the colonial and thecontemporary, a dazzling mix of cutting-edge design, chic restaurants, old-worldcafés, and lively outdoor markets.

Despite its wide boulevards and grandarchitecture, a blend of Spanish, Frenchand Italian, Buenos Aires is essentially

a city of barrios  (neighbourhoods), eachwith their own highly individual colourand character. You might trawl the manyantique shops in bohemian San Telmoor make a precious find in its Sundaymarket, stop for a street-side coffee inworking class La Boca, and stroll thetrendy avenues of Recoleta and Palermo.

Buenos Aires is a city of gourmet cuisine, amazing shopping, and frenetic nightlife, and is all at once elegant, extravagant andexuberant.

    Estancias

The idea of life on an estancia (ranch)conjures romantic images of colonialhomesteads, redolent with Old Worldcharm and elegance, set in tree-shadedparks and gardens, and of the legendarygauchos at work, these superb horsemenherding cattle across the wild grasslandsof the pampas.

A stay on an estancia offers you a chanceto ‘step back in time’ and experience atraditional Argentine lifestyle that, despitethe advances of the 21st century, stillcontinues little-changed today. Argentinaboasts very many fine estancias - severallittle more than an hour’s drive fromBuenos AIres - and while those that arecloser may be visited just for the day, atwo night stay is ideal. Guests can explorethe estates on foot, sometimes by bicycleor on horseback.

These are just two of our favourites:

The beautiful estancia Villa Maria datesfrom the late 19th century and today 75hectares of the 1500ha estate have beenopened to visitors. The splendid Norman-Tudor mansion, built in the 1920s andfurnished in the colonial style of the era,can accommodate up to 30 people.

Estancia El Ombu operated solely as aworking ranch from 1880 until 1993 when

it opened the 9 rooms of the main houseto accept visitors. Guests can go ridingaccompanied by one of the gauchos andmay choose, if so inclined, to participatein some of the day-to-day ranch activities.
