The Landscape Advocate | 1 SAT-B05: The Landscape Advocate: Waterfronts of Opportunity, Restoration, and Inspiration Overview: Redevelopment is dramatically reshaping New York City’s waterfront communities. This panel will examine three current NYC waterfront projects led by local community advocates that look critically at large-scale open space regeneration projects as frameworks for opening open space within a context of rapid growth and urban expansion. Learning Objectives: Review how large-scale infrastructure projects are reshaping the scope and extent of current waterfront redevelopment. Gain insight into how local community advocates are driving projects toward comprehensive, well-engineered, design-driven solutions. INTRO: Opening Open Space Within a Context of Rapid Growth and Urban Expansion.Moderator: Brandon Cappellari

For over ten years, Brandon has been shaping conceptual ideas into reality for both public and private clients. He has strong technical and intellectual leadership skills that are used daily in his role as an Associate Landscape Architect at SWA/Balsley. He has proven to be an effective communicator and liaison between design team members, sub-consultants, contractors, and clients. He also serves on the Executive Board of the New York Chapter of the ASLA.

CASE STUDY: Gowanus Canal Greenscape: From Superfund Site to Resilient GreenwaySpeaker: Andrea Parker

Andrea is the Executive Director of the Gowanus Canal Conservancy. In this role, she empowers a community of environmental stewards and design advocates in the rapidly changing Gowanus Watershed. As an instructor at City College of New York, she engages landscape architecture students with NYC’s complex urban ecology. Her prior work as a landscape designer focused on coastal resilience and building native plant communities. She received a BA from the University of Chicago, studied Landscape Horticulture at Merritt College, and received a Masters in Landscape Architecture from the University of Virginia.

Speaker: Gonzalo Cruz

Gonzalo Cruz‘s diverse professional accomplishments are supported by his multi-disciplinary background, with professional degrees in both Architecture and Landscape Architecture. He brings over 13 years of professional design services and project design management experience. He has orchestrated projects at a broad array of scales, ranging from large-scale urban design resiliency developments to smaller residential and commercial work.

Speaker: Janice Lauletta-Weinmann

Janice is the President/cofounder of the Greenpoint Monitor Museum with Masters Degrees in both Engineering and Education. The Museum received its Charter from the State Education Department of the University of the State of New York in 1996. It partners with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s USS Monitor National Marine Sanctuary, Oliver Tilden Camp No. 26 Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War and PS110 The Monitor School. Janice is one of the Museum’s instructors and for 28 years has been a practicing civil/structural engineer. She is a community advocate dedicated to improving her community.
