4 MAY 2013 | SASSY

Isn't it wonderful that women with work, life, balance and sass are honored during this spectacular springtime month? Working women that juggle all that life throws at them on a daily basis are some of the most productive and happy people I know and they typically accomplish so much during their day.

It is no secret with my friends and family that I am a much better working gal. I will sometimes complain about the difficulty in balancing the work, life and sass, but I really wouldn't have it any other way. When Mama is happy, everyone is happy. I love being busy, productive, flying by the seat of my pants, and then winding down at the end of a very full and productive day. If you are reading this, you probably share the same thoughts and, just for us seriously busy gals, this is how Sassy Magazine was born.

Work. Life. Balance. Sass. Enjoy this wonderful May with your family, friends and co-workers. Life is what we make it, so let's make it count!

Cheers!

Happy Mother's Day, Sassy Mama!

SASSY make-up

Whether it’s dry, chapped lips that are the problem, or just naturally thin lips, we all have a desire to have model-style full,

lush lips. Here are a few tips to help you on your quest!

2. HighlightWith a skin tone highlighter pencil, such as one you would normally use to highlight your eyes, line softly above your top lip line and blend it in with your index finger. Now, grab a shimmery pearl shadow and, with your finger, apply it on top of your cupid bow! This will give you a sexy upper lip… think ‘glamorous Victoria Secret-style’!

1. Exfoliate Use a store-bought lip scrub or make your own! Apply a thick layer of lip balm or lip conditioner and leave it on for over 20 minutes. Then, add a mixture of sugar and honey to a toothbrush and scrub to remove the balm. This will leave your lips feeling super soft and will remove that dead, dry skin. Now you’re ready for kisses (and the rest of your make-up!) Be sure to exfoliate your lips once a week.

5Steps to Juicy, Voluptuous Lips!

Page 13: Sassy May 2013

SASSY | MAY 2013 13

3. Line ‘Em UpChoose a nice pink- or peach-based nude lip liner, water resistant, and line your lips. These tones will simulate young, fresh, plump lips! Do not go overboard trying to draw outside your natural lip line since this will create an unattractive effect. Start filling them up with the same color as you lined them. This will serve you as both a concealer and a primer, canceling out any discoloration and keeping the lipstick and/or lip gloss in place for a much longer time. 4. Color

Choose your favorite lipstick or lip gloss. If you choose a lipstick, make sure you apply it with a lip brush and blot it on a tissue paper a couple of times to keep the color for a longer time and this will avoid any smearing or color-bleeding in the long run. Go for colors that will mimic your natural lip color after you have bitten them (or someone has for you!)

5. Super Shimmer (Optional Step) With the same shimmery pearl shadow as you used before, apply with your finger on the middle of your bottom lip to create more fullness!

With these few, simple tips, you should have luscious, kissable lips in no time flat!

THE SASS FACTORY advice from a business coach

Dear Charrise...

I’ve been a salesperson for a few years now, and my company loves to create sales contests, pitting the sales team against one another. I pride myself on doing great work, but these continuous contests are really starting to bug me. I love selling and I hit my sales goals, but I’m not competitive like some of my counterparts. Do you think I have to be competitive in order to keep my job?

CHARRISE SAYSi think that’s a great conversation to have with your manager. Your performance is obviously important to you. sales contests are set up to inspire sales people to get more sales, at a minimum. some people are motivated by that sort of thing, and will respond with improved sales performance. But not everyone is wired that way. if you had that conversation with your manager, you’d likely get clarity about the real expectations he/she has for you, specifically.

the funny thing about competition is that people assume that, to win, someone else has to lose. that isn’t always the case. Whether you win the contest or not, you are winning by meeting your sales goals. can you exist inside the sales team without regard to the contests? can your ego handle the way you may be seen by others?

there is not much point in trying to be something you’re not. the best sales performance happens when someone is allowed to do what they love, in the manner they wish to do it. the best sales managers move obstacles out of the way of that. sales contests will likely continue as long as they support an increase in sales performance overall.

What if you held to a bigger of vision of creation versus competition? there is plenty of business, always, when you view it as something you get to create. in sales, it’s all about creating solid relationships. there is no real limit to what you can create when you have those trusting relationships with your clients. my guess is that adopting this belief system will serve you in achieving your sales goals and beyond.

For years, my husband and I have been unable to get pregnant, so we chose the adoption route. I’m now a proud new mommy of a beautiful daughter (at the age of 35!) My husband and I are thrilled to be parents, yet both of us are experiencing some growing pains as we juggle the new responsibilities of having a child while focusing on our work. We both had an extreme focus on our careers leading up to the adoption, and now we just can’t get it all done. I never knew I would feel such ‘mommy guilt’! Can you help me see a way to return to our peaceful life?

CHARRISE SAYSYou’ve had a long time to develop your lifestyle before the baby. it’s an abrupt change for you both, and my guess is that you’re pretty hard on yourself for not being able to have the same focus on your work that you had before. there is no way for a precious baby to be introduced and for her arrival not to create some time challenges. it happens to all parents, regardless of the timing or the way our children come to us.

in order for things to work optimally, it’s best to agree, between you and your husband, certain areas of responsibility. You’ll need to be more organized than ever before. and, some things won’t get done the way they used to. You get to decide what’s most important, and you get to let the less important things go. Your little girl doesn’t know if the floor is not swept. she knows when you hold her and play with her. look deep inside and connect with your own inner wisdom. What’s important now?

it may not be feasible for each of you to spend as much time working as you did before – and that could be a very good thing for everyone. look for ways to be more flexible, and think long and hard before you make commitments. You will eventually find your new rhythm.

Work is important, of course, for you to be fully expressed in the world. You don’t have to choose one or the other. focusing on work at the appropriate times will teach your daughter independence and what it looks like to have a strong work ethic. above all, be fully present in every situation. Your presence makes all the difference.

Have a co-worker who’s driving you batty? A boss who just won’t listen to reason? Or maybe you’re wondering if this is your time to break out and show the business world what you’re really made of – but you don’t know exactly how to go about it. Sounds like you need some sound business advice! Send your questions to Charrise, our SASSY business coach, and have them answered here. It’s time to get a fresh perspective!

SASSY books

in 1644 in York, england, during the middle of the english civil war, the midwife is a very important woman. Bridget Hodgson is one of the best in the city and takes her duties

very seriously. When her friend esther is convicted of the murder of her pious Puritan husband, Bridget is determined to prove her friend’s innocence. along with her maidservant, martha, who knows more about using a knife than any lady should, Bridget goes throughout the city in search of a murderer. their search takes them to some of the city’s richest inhabitants as well as some of the most desolate neighborhoods.

this debut historical novel is rich in details with the sights and smells of the city as well as the intimate details of the midwife profession during the time period. the addition of the war between the King and Parliament adds to the story’s plotline without weighing it down. if you enjoyed Arthur & George by Julian Barnes and Gallows Thief by Bernard cornwell, then this book is for you. a sequel to this novel will be coming out in 2014.

Making the Most of Your Farmers’ Market Visit

By michelle shirk

spring has arrived and, with it, longer days, warmer weather and the beginning of the season for many area farmers’ markets. farmers’ markets provide shoppers with easy access to fresh

seasonal produce, delicious baked goods, locally made craft items and more. However, to those accustomed to simply grabbing their tomatoes and potatoes from supermarket shelves, the idea of wandering through food-filled stalls while interacting with complete strangers can be intimidating. Fear not – whether you’re contemplating your first trip to a local market or heading further afield, these tips and a little advance planning will help you to have a successful visit.

1. Time your trip. this tip applies to both the time of year and the time of day. farmers’ market offerings typically change as the season progresses. in other words, unlike at the supermarket, you should not expect to see asparagus and strawberries available from may through October. While a spring market visit certainly offers its own unique charms, those looking for a broad variety of produce may be better off waiting a few weeks to visit. if you are interested in a particular fruit or vegetable, do a little advance research to find out when it will be available and plan accordingly.

the best time of day to visit the farmers’ market depends on your personal situation. if you are a nervous first-timer heading to a small local market, you may be best served by showing up an hour or so after the market opens. By that time, there will probably be enough other shoppers to allow you to blend in and feel comfortable while still taking advantage of cool temperatures and well-stocked booths. in contrast, a popular market in a large city will likely be somewhat bustling regardless of the time, so consider arriving at the very beginning of the day to avoid long lines. finally, if you are visiting a market that features prepared foods, you may wish to schedule your trip to coincide with breakfast or lunchtime.

2. Gather intel. it’s certainly possible to enjoy a farmers’ market without any advance knowledge of its offerings. However, you can save time and confusion by having at least a general idea of the venue’s set-up, the parking situation and what type of wares will be offered for sale.

many farmers’ markets offer websites that will help you prepare for your visit. for example, the south Bend farmer’s market, which operates year round, provides a helpful monthly product calendar, vendor list and market map on its website at www.SouthBendFarmersMarket.com. if you can’t find the information you seek online, try asking friends and coworkers who have been to the market which specific vendors or products they recommend.

3. Pack the right gear. it’s nice (but not necessary) to have a sturdy market basket to tote your purchases. a reusable grocery bag or backpack will also do the job. if you live more than a short distance from the market, pack a cooler with ice to help you safely transport any items that should be kept cold. it’s also a good idea to pack a bucket or sturdy vase in case you come across a bouquet of flowers you can’t live without. Finally, cash remains the currency of choice for many vendors, so be sure to stop by your bank and pick up some small bills.

4. Ask questions. You may initially feel wary of friendly vendors because, in daily life, sales pitches often seem to come with a catch. try to turn off this way of thinking at the farmers’ market, as chatting with sellers while considering whether to buy their wares is de rigueur. the folks manning the booths are often the very same ones responsible for growing or preparing the food being sold, so feel free to ask them any questions you may have about food safety, ingredients or other concerns. they may also be able to provide interesting recipe ideas or serving suggestions for their products.

5. Maximize the return on your investment. in other words, once you get your precious haul home, don’t let it go to waste! Promptly pick up any additional ingredients necessary to prepare meals using the produce, meats and cheeses you bought at the market. If you find yourself stumped about what to do with your purchases, consider making delicious fajitas, shish-kabobs, salads or a stir-fry to use up a lot of fresh ingredients quickly. Fill a vase with your farmers’ market flowers, pour yourself a glass of farmers’ market apple cider and enjoy your fresh, seasonal meal!

What you eat can improve your mood or cause depression. food choices impact our mental well-being. Poor food choices lead to nutrient deficiencies or excesses which, in turn, can cause depression, mood swings, poor concentration and fatigue.

Folate decreases the risk of depression and improves concentration, energy levels and sleep by preventing an excess of the amino acid homocysteine. High levels of homocysteine can interfere with the production of mood-regulating neurotransmitters such as serotonin, dopamine and norepinephrine.

You can find Folate in: leafy greens (mustard greens, spinach), peas, potatoes, mushrooms, lean beef, peanuts, citrus fruits, strawberries, black-eyed peas, lentils and red kidney beans.

evidence has shown that Omega-3 Fatty Acids improve emotional disorders like depression by increasing communication between brain cells. a lack of DHa (docosahexanoic acid) can contribute to disturbances in mood, concentration, memory, attention and behavior.

You can find Omega-3 Fatty Acids in: salmon, herring, anchovies, tuna, chia seed (which contains even more Omega-3 Fatty Acids than salmon!), flaxseed (oil or ground), sesame seeds, canola oil, soy nuts, soy beans, walnuts, almonds, Omega-3 eggs, strawberries, blueberries and bananas. if you take a supplement, it should contain at least 200mg DHa.

Vitamin D deficiency is becoming more common especially for those who live in northern states. this fat-soluble vitamin aids in the production of serotonin; therefore, a deficiency can increase the likelihood of depression.

You can find Vitamin D in: dairy products, salmon, herring, canned sardines, fortified orange juice and cereals.

Thiamin is critical for taking energy from food and turning it into fuel for your brain, nerves and heart. it is also important for processing carbohydrates (sugars and starches). some beverages like coffee, black tea and alcohol block thiamin from being absorbed. Deficiency can lead to poor appetite, fatigue, irritability and difficulty concentrating.

You can find Thiamin in: dairy foods, eggs, pork, dried fruit, beans, peas and nuts.

B12 deficiency can cause depression and changes in mental status such as frequent forgetfulness. this vitamin is essential to the health of the nervous system. It may take years for a deficiency to be detected.

You can find B12 in: lean steak, eggs, milk (soy and skim), chicken breast, spinach and soybeans.

the brain cannot make serotonin unless the amino acid tryptophan is present. low serotonin levels have been linked to depression.

You can find tryptophan in: black-eyed peas, black walnuts, almonds, sesame seeds, roasted pumpkin seeds, ground flax seeds and tofu.

Keep in mind that eating patterns can make a difference in mood regulation and brain function. skipping meals promotes poor concentration and higher stress levels due to fluctuations in blood sugar levels. It’s a good idea to eat within the first one to two hours after waking and space meals around four hours apart. restricting whole food groups like carbohydrates can also negatively affect brain function. Our brains require at least 100 grams of carbohydrate per day to keep up with daily demands. choose to get carbohydrates from fruits, vegetables and whole grains.

Preventing Common Overuse Golf Injuries

By Brian ratigan, m.D.

Golf season is in full swing! the greens are trimmed, the sand traps are raked and you just bought a new driver that should add 10 yards to your tee shots. there is only one problem … that nagging lower back pain. Or maybe it’s a throbbing pain in your forearm, or even a shooting pain in your wrist.

Golf is a wonderful sport which has experienced an increase in popularity, especially among women, over the last 10 to 15 years. it looks easy: hitting a stationery ball with a club into a relatively wide open space. and it is perceived as being a low-risk sport when it comes to injuries. so why are you having aches and pains?

athletic injuries often fall into two categories. acute injuries are usually the result of a single, traumatic incident, such as getting hit by a partner’s club or spraining your wrist when taking too much of a divot. We will discuss these injuries in next month’s article.

this month, we will focus on the most common golf injuries, which are overuse injuries. these injuries are more subtle and occur over time. By repeating the same golf swing over and over again, significant stress is placed on the same muscles, tendons and joints. the american Orthopaedic society for sports medicine reports that during a two year period, 60% of golf professionals and 40% of amateurs suffered an injury while golfing, and over 80% of the reported injuries were related to overuse.

Tee Time: Dealing With Low Back Painlow back pain is the most common injury or complaint among golfers, whether professional, in a local league or just a weekend hacker. low back problems can occur as a result of the powerful rotation and extension motion in the golf swing. an elite golfer’s swing can generate club head speeds of over 120 mph!

for most golfers, pain in the lower back is caused by a poor swing and a lack of flexibility. The rotational stresses of the swing place considerable pressure on the spine and muscles. the pain may start as a dull ache, but may steadily grow worse with each round you play. Back pain may also be intermittent or constant, which can make it difficult to properly diagnose.

as with many athletic injuries, use the rice (rest, ice, compression, elevation) treatment method to reduce pain and swelling. this gives the body the time it needs to heal itself. in most cases, back pain resolves on its own within a few weeks. Anti-inflammatory medicines can also be helpful. If the soreness and pain does not subside, a steroid injection will deliver a high dose of anti-inflammatory medicine.

Par for the C urse:

Page 21: Sassy May 2013

SASSY | MAY 2013 21

simple exercises, such as rowing exercises and pull-downs, will strengthen lower back muscles and help prevent further injury. Yoga and Pilates are programs that focus on trunk and abdomen strength, as well as improving flexibility.

if you walk the course, another thing to consider is purchasing a push cart. Golfers who carry their own bag have twice the incidence of back and shoulder injuries as those who do not carry their bag. finally, lessons with a local golf pro can improve the mechanics of your swing, taking stress off your body and hopefully improving your game.

In the Rough: Golfer’s Elbow is a Real Condition?the elbow is the second most injured area in golfers. medial epicondylitis, commonly called golfer’s elbow, is an inflammation of the tendons that attach your forearm muscles to the inside of the bone at your elbow. these muscles and tendons become damaged from poor swing mechanics and the repeated motion of swinging the club. this leads to pain and tenderness on the inside of the elbow.

lateral epicondylitis, known as tennis elbow, can also affect golfers. this condition is due to the constant strain of the tendons and muscles on the outer side of the elbow, usually in the golfer’s lead arm. The inflammation is caused by prolonged gripping activities and gripping the club either too hard or for too long can increase the pain.

One of the best ways to avoid elbow problems is to strengthen your forearm muscles. for best results, continue your stretching and exercise routine in the off season. Squeezing a tennis ball for five minutes at a time is a simple, effective exercise that will strengthen your forearm muscles. Wrist curls using a lightweight dumbbell will increase flexibility as well as improve your strength.

Rest is the first treatment for elbow injuries. Stop all activities that cause the pain and use the rice treatment method to reduce pain and swelling. conservative treatments are often all that is needed for a full recovery of golfer or tennis elbow, each of which usually resolves in a few days to a few weeks. if initial treatments fail, a cortisone injection may be used at the discretion of your doctor.

Bunker Shot: Diagnosing Wrist Injuriesanother common golf injury occurs in the wrist or hand, with the wrist injured three times more frequently than the hand. the lead wrist (left wrist in right-handed golfers) is most at risk. Wrist injuries can result from a traumatic blow such as hitting a root or rock when swinging, but the most common complaint is due to wrist tendonitis.

Tendonitis is caused by inflammation of the tendons that cross the wrist. The irritation causes the lining around the tendon to swell, making it difficult for the tendons to move as they should. the primary symptoms of tendonitis are pain, swelling, tenderness and inflammation when the wrist is moved. In some cases, the inflammation and pain can cause partial or full immobility of the joint.

treatment usually consists of rest, splinting, ice and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medicines. Physical therapy is often recommended and includes stretching and strengthening exercises. in some cases, steroid injections will help to ease inflammation and swelling that does not diminish with more conservative treatment.

Putting for Birdie: Tips for Preventing InjuryOne of the best ways to get ready for your golf game might be considered a little old-fashioned, but simple stretching exercises can work wonders. Poor flexibility is a key risk factor for a golf injury. One survey showed that more than 80% of golfers spent less than ten minutes warming up before a round. those who did warm up had less than half the incidence of injuries.

a regular exercise program that includes core strengthening, stretching and strengthening all major muscle groups can also help decrease your chance of injury. for best results, perform strength-training exercises year round. Build your endurance with regular aerobic activity. try walking, jogging, bicycling or swimming. You will be amazed at how much this increases your endurance when walking the course.

many of the problems we discussed can be improved by using good swing mechanics. take a few lessons from a golf pro to improve your technique. use proper posture, standing with your feet shoulder-width apart and distributing your weight equally on both feet. avoid hunching over the ball, which may contribute to neck and back strain.

try to develop a smooth golf swing. the power of your swing comes from force transferred smoothly through all your muscle groups, from your ankles to your wrists. for example, overemphasizing your wrists during your swing can cause forearm strain, leading to golfer’s elbow.

Now that you have a golf bag full of tricks to identify and prevent overuse injuries, it’s time to put on your cleats, slap on some sunscreen and enjoy a round of golf.

RECLAIM the Dining Room

By andrew skipper

With the state of the economy, more and more of us are

choosing to spend our leisure time at home rather than out and about. for this reason, many people are reclaiming their dining rooms. the dining room is a place to reconnect with loved ones. it is a place to gather, talk, laugh, eat and celebrate our daily lives. meals in this room are different from those taken in the kitchen or breakfast nook. they are more ceremonial and deliberate.

Why not create a special atmosphere in a room that can be used every day?

Page 25: Sassy May 2013

SASSY | MAY 2013 25

RECLAIM the Dining Room

lighting is very important in the dining room space. if you have a hanging light over the table, a perfect way to set the mood is with a dimmer. Dimmers are cost effective and you can usually install them yourself. On a buffet, use one short lamp in the middle, or two matching buffet lamps on either side. use low wattage bulbs (40 watt or less) to create a soothing atmosphere. if you have favorite pieces of artwork on the wall, use ceiling-mounted spotlights to highlight them. and, of course, the most important lighting in the dining room is candlelight. if you’re having guests or throwing a dinner party, nothing is more festive than a room full of candles.

another way to set the scene is with music. Don’t fret if you do not have an in-home sound system. A CD player will do just fine. If you have an MP3 player and a docking station, you can create custom playlists to go with the theme of your dinners. for instance, if you’re serving italian food, compile a list of songs by classic italian singers!

it is also important to keep the dining table clear of clutter, wiped clean and always ready to be set. Two very significant things you bring to the table are good manners and a positive attitude. cloth napkins and candles help set the proper tone. a centerpiece, simple as it may be, also shows that you put thought into your mealtime.

use this space to create lasting memories for yourself and those you care about. You won’t be sorry.

time spent in the dining room is usually limited, so it is a wonderful place to use bold or dark colors, as long as they don’t clash with adjoining rooms. a great way to be sure that your dining room decor doesn’t conflict with the rest of your house is to repeat a few colors throughout your entire home. for example, if you have yellow walls in your dining room, perhaps you could use a yellow lampshade or throw pillow in your living room to visually link the two spaces.

I Shaved My Legs for This? By Jane suter

Aaaah, spring! The weather warms, the flowers bloom, sweaters are exchanged for shorts. Yet, some sweaters aren't

so easy to put away. I'm talking about the hair sweater that has kept my body warm these past few months. The regions of my body I have happily neglected because they were hidden from view. But now it's time. Time for the big shave.

It takes some planning to assemble all the implements I will need to transform myself from a yeti into a spring flower. Let's see, here: razors, shaving cream, lotion, electric trimmers, a chain saw (or two). But, I don't let this deter me. I am on a mission. So I line up my gadgets and hit the shower like a woman possessed.

The first thing I notice, aside from the fact that I look like Jacob from the Twilight series (and NOT in human form), is the look of my new disposable razors. These bad boys boast ‘comfort strips’ and 64 blades. It's like someone glued a humongous bar of soap onto a pink lawn mower! Add to that the amazing qualities of my shaving cream (energizing/soothing/hydrating/emulsifying?) and I am feeling mighty confident that my depilating assignment will go off without a hitch. Or the need for a box of Band-Aids®.

After chiseling the rusted can of Barbasol® off the shelf, I cover myself, neck down, with foam. The smell of mint and aloe vera chokes me as I balance my foot high on a slippery ledge. One false move and I'm a statistic. So, I steady myself in a ballerina pose and carefully plow the field that is my leg. It takes four razors. Once my other leg is done, I move upward to the dreaded bikini area.

Not for the faint of heart, the bikini zone demands the skill of a surgeon and the dexterity of a contortionist. All those crevices, tendons and muscles are just waiting… nay, begging to be nicked. One wrong move and I'm certain my thighs will be rendered as useless as a plate of linguini. Perhaps if I bite my lower lip and squint my eyes just right I can prevail. What's that? You think I should try a bikini wax? Let me stop you right there. I know some women who do this. On purpose. With great results. But not me, sistah! My hoo-hah has a strict ‘no audience, no molten lava allowed’ policy. Furthermore, any procedure that involves swiftly ripping hair from my flesh ... while I'm conscious ... uhhh, no.

Moving up to my arm pits, and grabbing my sixth razor, I am almost done. Sadly, this is one area of my body where nothing makes sense. All the hair grows in different directions making a clean sweep impossible. First, I try a north-to-south maneuver. Then a south-to-north move. Finally, the rare, short, angular glide. Yet, nothing works as perfectly as it should, so I give up. I guess it will have to do. After all, that's why we invented sleeves, right? So I rinse down and emerge from the cell. The one now clogged with what looks like a Chihuahua.

All in all, I feel pretty good. Colder, but good. As I wiggle into my shorts and t-shirt, I notice one last horror of springtime: Casper legs. If I'm not careful, I might be arrested for random blinding. Maybe I should have kept the hair, strictly for the color, of course. Although, it's too late now, so I think I'll just enjoy this wonderful spring weather and my new, slick, smooth body. Hopefully it will last for a few days. Before the red bumps appear.

But that's another story.

As a friend or co-worker, I’m pretty sure there’s nothing more annoying and disrespectful than when I’m meeting with someone and their phone keeps going off with calls, text messages and social media updates. Our time is precious, this is true – sometimes we have to be able to multi-task, especially as businesswomen. But there is a time and a place to shut down, make eye contact and pay attention. In her book Well Said! Presentations and Conversations That Get Results, Darlene Price agrees with this concept. “Don’t be the one who causes a distraction!” she writes. “Don't check email, look at your phone, send a text, check the scores, or disengage in any way.” It’s not only a sign of respect, it also proves that you are paying attention to what your client, superior or co-worker is saying. Often, even when a response isn’t necessary, having their conversation and ideas validated by your attention speaks volumes. It intimates that they are important to you, and what they have to say has value. Clients are more likely to respond positively when they have your full attention, and you’re more likely to have good working relationships with the people inside your own office if you train yourself to give off positive non-verbal communication in this way.

Often, we are unaware that our non-verbal communication is saying as much or more than our words are to the people around us. A pursed lip, an eye-roll, a smile, a scowl, darting eyes, crossed arms, an outreached hand – all of these have some sort of subconscious significance to them. Whether we mean to communicate positively or negatively through our words, our actions can (and usually do) speak louder – who would’ve thought the old adage was correct?

Included in Price’s topics are such things as dressing appropriately for the occasion (not letting ‘casual’ mean ‘careless’), making and maintaining eye contact, keeping a smile on your lips and not losing your cool whatever you might be facing, and being aware of the non-verbal communications that others are exuding as well. Writer and educator Kendra Cherry, author of The Everything Psychology Book (2nd Edition), agrees on many counts, particularly on appropriate appearance. She says in one of her articles, “Appearance can also alter physiological reactions, judgments and interpretations. Just think of all the subtle judgments you quickly make about someone based on his or her appearance.” Dressing appropriately for a meeting, whether it’s with a client or a superior, says a great deal about your work ethic and dependability.

“The eyes are the most direct link to our emotions,” says Robert Graham, principal of GrahamComm which is a training and consulting company that helps clients to increase their sales. Among his Seven Rules for Excellent Eye Contact are gems such as finishing an entire thought while maintaining eye contact with one person in the group before moving on to the next, and always being sure to make eye contact with everyone at the table at least once during a presentation or meeting.

I remember that, when I was young, my mother trained me well in the art of my tone of voice. Many times, sullen and strong-willed, I’d say what she wanted me to say in the moment, but it was with such a tone of voice that my words did not matter. One cannot say, “I’m sorry,” in an angry, spiteful tone because then

the recipient of the apology knows beyond a shadow of a doubt that your words mean nothing and your tone means everything. the same is true in every business setting imaginable. if you’re speaking with a client who has an absolutely terrible idea, you may try to steer them in a different direction. if they sense by your tone, pitch or speed of speech that you think their idea is terrible, it could cut off all further contact and, no matter how diplomatic your words may be, the meeting could be over before it’s even started. Be certain to practice an even-keeled manner of speech no matter what the case may be. Don’t wear your heart on your sleeve, so to speak. even when emotions run high or you’re faced by major tension, a calm, collected tone of voice will work even more wonders than the words you choose.

Keeping all of these tips in mind will help you to maintain better client relationships, easier and more comfortable office relations and a two-way street with your superiors. Never forget that what you don’t say can often be as or more important than what you do.

Nearly 80% of the u.s. population aligns itself with some form of organized religion, according to a report by the Pew forum on religion and Public life. that’s approximately 250 million people who, in one way or another, are probably part of faith communities, perhaps even in one of the more than 210 in st. Joseph county alone, according to the united religious community.

these diverse communities generally manage to gather, celebrate, learn, maintain traditions, teach children, support members in need and often have ministries of service. they are some of the leading service organizations in any community. to accomplish all of this, they rely on volunteers within their own communities, particularly those who step forward to lead and guide others. We spoke with three women who help lead area faith organizations and they shared some of their wisdom.

Diane sumrall is the co-pastor of christ chapel church in south Bend; rabia Yasmin shariff is the interfaith coordinator and former board member for the islamic society of michiana, also serving as a board member for the united religious community of st. Joseph county; and cassie Kubaszyk is the co-chair of the sacred Heart catholic church of laPorte’s annual Polish carnival. each of these women serve in unique capacities according to their own skills and time allowances, helping to keep her diverse congregations together.

The Job At Handin many ways, the responsibilities of these women are similar to those of a manager or executive in a corporation. they run meetings, seek collaboration and consensus, encourage members to share their talents, advocate for new directions and handle the annoyances of catering. they also serve as mentors and models for others in the community who want to be more involved or who are struggling with their faith.

However, what sets being a faith leader apart from being a secular business leader is often how one person fills many roles simultaneously. For example, consider sumrall’s list of responsibilities: “[i] serve our congregation with my husband (Pastor steven sumrall); at times this involves ‘preaching’ or, in my description, teaching in our sunday morning service, or organizing special events with our ladies. On occasion, i lead worship, and i am the director of our Women's ministry. i also serve as secretary on the board of Provident ministries,” the umbrella organization for christ church. therefore, Diane is an aide, an executive, a teacher, a secretary and much more.

When it comes to one’s faith, one’s family is always part of the equation. While

careers often require us to work away from our families, faith communities often integrate families. careful balance is still necessary, though; as anyone who has volunteered knows, once you join a group, there’s no end of work that you should do, you just have to choose how much you can do.

in this instance, consider Kubaszyk, who is an operations manager at spartan Staffing. She also has three children. Her work for the three-day church festival, the church’s primary fundraiser for the year, sounds as though it would be a seasonal job. However, the planning takes twelve months. they book some of their vendors, choose a date and evaluate changes during the previous year’s festival. then, Kubaszyk works to gather volunteers and resources until January, when the official planning begins for the July event. And Kubaszyk has done this for more than five years running.

Yet, her situation is an example of how family and faith intermingle. Her husband, Duke, is her co-chair, and they work together throughout the entire process. Kubaszyk also volunteers on other ministries in the church throughout the year, although the festival is the only one she leads. “i need total balance in my life. i have to have work, family, play and spirituality. When something is missing, i feel lopsided,” she reflects.

sumrall agrees: “ministry is our life and has been in one capacity or another for 35 years. [my husband and i] balance family responsibility and ministry responsibility with teamwork, dedication, communication, prayer, lots of love, forgiveness and family fun. and not necessarily in that order! Our children have been involved in the work we do since they were small. We have made an effort to include them, being careful not to force them but rather to encourage them to pursue a particular area within the church where they felt ready to serve.”

Getting To Know Youshariff ’s involvement is more ecumenical in some respects. muslims make up less than one percent of the population of the country, so their religion isn’t always understood by those unfamiliar with the faith. shariff is the contact person whenever the islamic society of michiana receives a request for a presentation about their faith by a church, school or community. as she notes, these requests became more common after 2001.

this work carries over to her membership with the united religious community of st. Joseph county, which describes itself as “a consortium of congregations and faith-based organizations joined together in an interfaith partnership”. (urcsjc.com) the urc celebrates its 40th anniversary this year, and is a model organization for ecumenical work. members of the urc come from all faiths across the county: many christian denominations, sikh, Jewish, Baha’i,

mennonite, unitarian, Quakers and others. shariff is the muslim representative.

as an organization, the urc supports the community through a series of initiatives, such as helping victim advocacy and family justice centers; food, hunger and homelessness projects, as well as support networks for widowed men and women, refugees and members of the military. they also help educate each other about their faiths and congregational goals.

there are other ways in which congregations educate new, potential or non-members about their faith and heritage. Kubaszyk’s church festival has an entire booth dedicated to the history of Polish-americans, the ethnic group that is the foundation of the congregation. church members cook up traditional Polish food, polka music is played from the bandstand and there is an annual Polish mass at christmas. shariff ’s organization is comprised of many new immigrants from different countries, so she and other members help alleviate language barriers and culture shock. “i know what it means to build a new life from the ground up,” says shariff, whose parents came to the country in the 1970s.

Challenges and Benefits all three women agree that the greatest challenges come when trying to reach consensus within their congregations. this makes perfect sense. after all, in any organization that has generational, cultural and ideological diversity, there will be disagreement, but good leaders find ways to move past those differences into consensus.

“Challenges: working with people! Benefits: working with people!” says sumrall with a smile when i ask her about the best and most difficult parts of her work. “Pulling it all together, with everyone in agreement – getting the buy-in while still being open to new ideas from other people,” are the also the key obstacles for Kubaszyk. Shariff reflects on this challenge as well: “as a leader, my responsibility is to meet the needs of all members and listen to their different options.”

some of the best parts are the moments of peaceful, productive unity. for shariff, this is her interfaith dialogue group. “We have so much love for each other now. i get the most satisfaction from knowing that if the other members ever come in contact with someone who doesn’t understand or is anti-muslim, that person can explain my faith based on what i’ve shared. We’re doing something worthwhile.”

the women also all agree that there is a deep sense of peace and satisfaction that comes from serving through faith. Kubaszyk’s response seems to echo the sentiments of all three women: “the greatest benefit is knowing that I’m serving because I want to, not because i have to. serving provides a feeling of fulfillment: I’m using the talents God has given me to the best of my ability. this work has taught me not to spread my commitments so thin that i feel separated. my faith work has also taught me to find balance and give all the glory to God. It’s not about me.” *Offer valid at participating locations shown below. Valid on Edible To Go® products only. Offer expires 5/31/2013. Offer code must be used

Toddlers are experts at saying ‘no’ to anything that doesn’t suit them. They say it loudly and frequently. According to child development experts, it’s a strategy that helps them feel like they have some control in a big, overwhelming world.somewhere along the line, we learn how to be diplomatic and please other people – and lose the sense that we are in control of our world. for women who are trying their best to please bosses, co-workers, significant others, children, parents and siblings, the stress of saying ‘yes’ to too many requests takes a toll. there simply aren’t enough hours in the day or enough resources to meet all the demands. But there are ways to channel your inner child, the one who can just say ‘no’, in a graceful way, reducing the stress of too many demands and regaining a sense of control.

The art of the graceful decline is, first and foremost, a state of mind. It starts with a sense of resolve: there is no way you’ll be saying ‘yes’ to the request! But it is carried out in the politest manner possible.

Here’s an example: the day-before phone or text with a request for a dozen cookies or cupcakes for tomorrow’s class party. Your graceful response doesn’t even have to include the word ‘no’. it’s as simple as saying, “i’m so sorry, i won’t be able to help you out.” No need to give a reason why or invent an excuse. if it’s simply a matter of bad timing, add that you’ll be happy to help out in future.some situations aren’t as simple or straightforward. for example, your boss asks

you to stay late to finish a project for a meeting the next morning. It’s framed as a request but you know it’s really a demand. You have reservations for dinner with your husband in half an hour. Ouch!

the good news is that you have options, depending on your relationship with your boss and the complexity of the task. First, find out how involved the project is and how much time it will take to complete. this may not be a situation in which you have to say ‘no’ to one thing in order to say ‘yes’ to another. Perhaps you can come in early and finish it up before the meeting or take it home to complete after your date.

But let’s suppose there aren’t other options and it’s time to draw a line in the sand with a boss who assumes you’ll always say ‘yes’ no matter how unreasonable the request. Here’s one way to say no gracefully, “i wish i’d known about the deadline in time to make other arrangements for this evening. as it is, i can’t stay late.” this tactic may not be the best course of action if it truly is an emergency situation or if your boss is so unreasonable that your job may be in jeopardy for saying ‘no’.

Saying ‘NO’ with Grace

Page 37: Sassy May 2013

if you’ve made a habit of saying ‘yes’ to everything, learning to say ‘no’ will take practice. Here are some tips to make it easier:

• Keep it simple. “i’m sorry i won’t be able to…” is enough. the more you explain, the more likely you are to talk yourself into doing something, or to give the other person ammunition to overcome your objections.

• Be firm. the person doing the asking can sense if you’re waffling and those people who are unscrupulous (or determined) will use that to their advantage and keep pushing until they bully a ‘yes’ out of you. Don’t let them!

• Say it with a smile. a smile and a regretful, but upbeat tone of voice keeps the possibility of hurt feelings to a minimum.

• Find compromises whenever possible. maybe you know of someone else who can say ‘yes’ and would love the chance to do so. make the suggestion! that’s a win-win-win and makes everyone feel good.

finally, remember that it’s okay to have boundaries. saying ‘no’ to a request that would add unnecessary stress to your life doesn’t make you a bad person. think of it as you giving yourself the time and ability to say ‘yes’ to the things that truly matter in your life.

Share articles, blog posts, tips and tricks and other high-quality content. Be valuable to your audience. update your linkediN status on a regular basis to improve your visibility.

Keep It PersonalOnly accept linkediN connections from people you know personally or have met virtually. if you accept every person who tries to connect with you even if you don’t know them, you will significantly water down the quality of your connections and waste valuable time and effort. that being said, if someone you don’t know invites you to connect and gives you a compelling reason why you should, by all means go for it.

The Dos: • Preparing ahead of time is critical to your success, so be sure to do extensive

research on the employer – check out their website and use Google to find additional information on the company and the person with whom you are meeting.

• Have questions prepared in advance, based on the research you have done, to ensure that dialogue is interactive. take these questions with you since you will be nervous and may forget. this also conveys a vested interest on your part and shows that you have done your research.

• Jot down the employers ‘hot buttons’ (points of interest or concentration) so you can mention them in a follow-up thank-you note. the employer will be impressed that you paid close attention.

• Bring a couple of extra copies of your resume, especially if you are meeting with multiple people. remember to offer a copy to whomever you are meeting as you begin the interview. this indicates you are prepared and can be helpful to the employer.

• Prepare for potential questions. Behavioral interviews are common, so be prepared to discuss real life success stories that back your accomplishments and try to quantify your successes whenever possible. employers are especially interested in how you helped to increase sales and/or to decrease costs.

• Be prepared to complete an employment application, if necessary. Have your former employers’ addresses, phone numbers and contact information readily available.

• Be prepared to answer how you dealt with a mistake and/or challenging situation. try to think of weaknesses that could be a positive (such as you have difficulty with delegation or work/life balance challenges, are too much of perfectionist, are not always patient, etc.). it is only human to make mistakes, but take ownership of those and talk about how you learned from them.

• Be prepared to answer why you left former employers without speaking poorly of a company or person. Never be negative or go into too much detail (try to generalize explanations and get to the point quickly). an example would be to say an environment/culture was not a good fit versus saying there was a personality conflict.

• Know where you are going ahead of time and drive by the location before the day of the interview, if possible, or have it well mapped out.

• Always arrive early! Ten minutes is ideal.

• Dress for success! Make sure you look professional and are well-groomed. Clothes should fit well and be clean and wrinkle-free. When in doubt, over-dress rather than under-dress. this can depend on the level of the position. executive level should wear a jacket/tie or suit, for example, whereas an engineer may wear dress slacks and a dress shirt.

• If applicable, fill out the application completely and accurately – do not note ‘see resume’.

• Be confident but humble – go into the interview telling yourself you are going to get this job!

• Smile, be excited and be pleasant – employers want to hire happy, healthy and positive people!

• Even though you’re nervous, be yourself – they want to get to know the real you.

• Make good eye contact and practice to ensure that you have a firm handshake.

• Have good posture and body language – leaning slightly forward implies interest.

• Slow down. It is okay to pause and think before answering – you can say, “let me think about that for a minute” before proceeding. silence is not bad and it is good to think before you speak. this indicates that you are a thoughtful person.

• Always be honest, but try to put a positive spin on anything potentially negative.

• Close on a positive note thanking them, expressing interest and looking forward to the next step.

• Ask for business cards and send a well-thought out thank-you card or email – this can help seal the deal!

• Learn from each experience – practice makes perfect! Remember, employers want to know what YOu can do for them, not what they can do for you.

How to Ace the Interview By tammie carr

The Dos and Don’ts

There are no ‘trick’ interview questions and there is no magic bullet. More than anything else, a successful interview is about perception – that is, the perception of the interviewer and how you can impress them enough to get the job. Since most people are not professionals at interviewing and may not necessarily have a lot of interviewing experience, especially those who have been at the same employer for 10+ years, it’s hard to know how to prepare. Even those who have had plenty of interview experience still need a refresher and can continue to learn how to better prepare and ensure their success.

Page 41: Sassy May 2013

SASSY | MAY 2013 41

The Don’ts: • Don’t forget to prepare, as this is critical to your

success!

• Don’t arrive late.

• Don’t arrive hungry or thirsty.

• Don’t limit your interview time unless it cannot be helped (and then let the interviewer know ahead of time if there is a time constraint.)

• Don’t wear too much perfume or cologne.

• Make sure you do not smell like smoke.

• Don’t appear disheveled or rushed.

• Don’t bring your cell phone with you.

• If you’re meeting over lunch, don’t order something that could be messy.

• Don’t bring up a subject you cannot intelligently discuss.

• Don’t be dishonest.

• Don’t ramble or talk too much; be cognizant of the fact that the employer's time is valuable and they may have limited time to meet with you.

• Don’t talk too fast.

• Do not volunteer information that could be held against you. for example, do not ask for personal days off, go into personal issues, childcare or tell them about your family.

• Do not bring up compensation or any pay-related questions.

• Do not be negative or talk negatively about anyone or any companies, including past employers or reasons for leaving past employers.

• Do not fidget.

• Do not read your resume to them, as they can do that – just be able to expand further with details.

• Don’t be overly confident or arrogant – most employers do not like people who are cocky.

• Don’t forget to thank them for the opportunity to meet with them.

Additional Tips for Phone Interviews:• Make sure there is no background noise and

there are no distractions.

• Have the employer call you on a phone number with good reception (cell phones may not be the best.)

• Have the information you researched, the job description and questions you prepared in front of you plus pen and paper to take notes.

• Have something to drink nearby in case you get a tickle in your throat.

• Ask for their email address, since you cannot ask for their business card – this way, you can still follow up with a thank-you note.

Sassy Magazine and the Renaissance Executive Forums are pleased to bring you our new monthly column The Sassy Executive Forum. Each month we will have

a featured business question that will be answered by female executives to help guide you in your own business endeavors.

Advice from Area Execs

Question: “i have recently been promoted to an important executive position in my company. some of my direct reports used to be my peers. i want to retain their respect, but realize that i must now direct

and evaluate them. What are the top two to three things I must do in the first 90 days to be successful in my new position?”

This article is provided by Executive Forums which helps executives achieve their goals and reduce risk by providing input from a confidential team of their peers and tools from thought leaders. For information, contact them at 574.243.0175 or visit their website: www.ExecutiveForums.com.

ANDREA HALPIN Partner at Leone Halpin, LLP “Your Small Business Legal Partner”The attorneys of Leone Halpin, LLP have the experience necessary to find real solutions to your legal matters, while at the same time delivering the individual attention you deserve. Whether you are seeking help with a business, litigation, or personal legal matter, the lawyers of Leone Halpin, LLP will provide the advice you need.

Suggestion Number 1: Avoid Making a Power Play; Bring Treats Insteadchange usually makes everyone a little uncomfortable. When you are introduced, or have to introduce yourself, as the holder of the supervisory position, remember that the company is vesting you with apparent power. the power is ‘apparent’ because the reality is that you will be unable to force those you now supervise to do anything. so, avoid the power play. lead by example. the employees will follow if they like and respect you, and find you to be fair and impartial. Your success will come from the same characteristics that led to your promotion in the first place: hard work, attention to detail, leadership, vision and follow-through. Don’t underestimate the power of treats to convey that you care. treats are obviously not critical, but a small investment in snacks can bring a surprising amount of goodwill.

Suggestion Number 2: Be Fair and Kind When Enforcing RulesYou may feel awkward when first enforcing rules against former peers. This is natural, and you should expect to feel this way. Just go ahead and enforce the rules in a kind and reasonable manner. as a supervisor, you have to relate to everyone the same. if you enforce the rules against everyone but your former lunch buddies, you will lose the respect of your other employees. You also risk bringing liability to your company for workplace discrimination. Your actions as a supervisor may be imputed to your company, which can directly affect your success in your new position.

Be aware that certain types of illnesses, mental conditions, physical conditions and other problems that are legally protected conditions may result in behavior consistent with rule violations. if you notice repetitive rule violations, you should contact your human resources department or legal counsel.

Suggestion Number 3: Confirm the Scope of Your Authority and Embrace ItYou must know the scope of your authority because it is not necessarily described during the promotion process. misinterpreting your authority can have critical consequences to your success.

for example, imagine that you are asked to sit in on a meeting with the owner of the company, your supervisor, and with a friend of yours whom you now supervise. a disgruntled customer will also be at the meeting, and the topic will be a complaint the customer has lodged against your employee.

if you act as an advocate for the customer, and learn later that the owner preferred you to remain neutral or act as a quiet supporter of your employee, your assumption could cost your company its customer and you your job. Your chances of success increase greatly by confirming in advance with your direct superior, the scope of your authority and your role in various group settings. Once you are clear on your authority, embrace it and execute your role responsibly.

MELISSA KRONEWITTER Operations Director at Working Person's StoreWorkingPerson.com is the number one, world-wide destination for quality work clothing, work footwear and safety gear, serving customers on five continents. Not only do we outfit working people from head to toe, we customize websites and catalogs to make the buying process easy for both working people and businesses.

Communicating expectations is a must. i would sit down with each person and go over my agenda. let them all know what i am expecting from each of them. make sure they understand that i am depending on their success to move the business forward. i would be sure to show them that i am there to support them. i would also explain my position and that i now have to hold them accountable.

My attitude will play a major role in this transition. i, of course, would be positive and very upbeat about the change. i would be very involved in the first few projects to make sure everyone is heading in the right direction. i would be sure to get everyone's input and reassure them that their opinions do, in fact, matter. i want to make sure they understand how important they are to the company.

I would continue to meet with each person weekly, then monthly, to make sure expectations are being met. if an issue arises (as they always do), i would be open and honest. i would give suggestions. showing my employees that i support them will go a long way. When my employees succeed, i succeed.
