We are so excited to have this jam packed publication off and running. You’ll be receiving six issues a year, delivered straight to your

inbox and available online.

It’s interesting to think that less than 10 months ago, all of this was just an idea. Since the first Sass on Sundays catchup back in December

last year, it has been a whirlwind of excitement and hard work as we have connected with incredible women, opened the doors to Sass

Place and created the highly anticipated Sass Summit which we are holding right here in Adelaide.

While our feet have barely touched the ground, we have been loving every minute, continue to be amazed at the incredible talent of the

women around us, and quickly learnt that time alone together creates more amazing intiatives - The Pink Ticket is coming!

Since January The Sass has changed its name to The Sass Collective, created a face-to-face collaborative community at Sass Place, had a

logo redesign, two websites and seen over 120 incredible women join our supportive and passionate community. We have learnt a lot about business, a lot about others and even more about ourselves.

We have grown just as our business has, and just as our ‘sisters’ have too. We have proven to ourselves that when you believe in your

dream and work hard, you can make it happen.

This edition we share our thoughts on being in business and why the tragic loss of Robin Williams is a timely reminder to look after ourselves when we continue to give and give. We showcase our

new Sass Leaders, profile Sass Sisters Sam Cannell and Kylie Pearce, some wonderful member benefits and even a nutritious recipe to tempt your tastebuds from the lovely Belinda Whelan at Healthy

Loving Life!

Thank you so much for being a part of the Sassy journey!

YOUR LITTLE SPARK OF MADNESS | 5

YOUR LITTLE SPARK OF MADNESS

In the wake of the death of Robin Williams, I have been soaking myself up in the glow he has left behind, watching reruns of movies I probably wasn’t previously prepared to rewatch until my kids were of the right age so I could indulge and watch with them. I’ve been basking in the tributes, bathing in the warmth of interviews, clinging to the laughter in the stand up; both the early years and more recent, trying to hang on to a force that has left us and a spark that feels like it is slipping away, further and further out of reach, out of mind each and every day… holding on to his cheeky grins, the irreverent humour, his unpredictability, the sheer talent and wit. The unmistakable comedy stylings of a master at work.

I know people have been criticised for riding off the social engagement of this immense and deeply profound and unfair and downright shitty event, but let me preface this post by saying I have been in a state of shock and deep sadness since the news hit and the world, forever, was changed. To me, Robin Williams was my childhood. He seemed to be in EVERY movie I ever loved growing up and continued to feel like home in my adult years… just something stable, rock solid. A smile, could always escape my lips when he graced

my screen, no matter the circumstances that preceded.

Although today, I find myself sitting here, feeling like a thief. I’m caught between some “never-never” of wanting to watch, remember, surround myself in his brilliance, but at the same time feeling greedy, like he finally got the bill for all of our “taking” and just had nothing left in the tank. Like the cupboard was bare.

It’s amazing to think, in a world where you are loved, adored and revered that our brightest star, our cheekiest clown, our most entertaining spark can feel so alone, desperate and sad. It beggars belief.

But then I have to remember of how freely he shared his gifts and talents with the world, making us all laugh, saving us from the torment of the world, changing our views, helping us laugh at the sadness and stupidity. He offered that up to us. Often, steadying our ships whilst letting his own crash amidst stormy seas. The ultimate sacrifice… our laughter and happiness, in return for his own mental health and sanity. That parallel feels no better, but the greatness of what he gave us in return for what he suffered is so very profound,

WORDS | INDY HILDITCH

YOUR LITTLE SPARK OF MADNESS | 6

you can only say thank you to a man who does that in order to bring joy and wonder to the world.

I am so thankful I lived in a time of Robin Williams; where his profound talent was truly given the credit it deserved. I am devastated for us as a community of human beings, at the loss of someone who was so genuinely funny and, from all reports, kind and generous. There should be MORE not LESS of people like Robin Williams in the world.

I feel like putting a line in here like “So how does this all relate to business” would be petty, immature and down right insensitive, so I’m not sure there is a smooth segway to this clip. So simply this.

That little spark of madness, the one that tells you to do something outside of the box, to go forth and be amazing, to do things differently, to speak up, to listen. The spark of madness that says YES when others say NO. That! That is the essence of who you are, and you should hang onto that with both hands, dig your nails in and own it.

I remember watching interviews with him over the years and thinking “where is this going” and wondering how they were going to reel it back in. He was out of his seat, jumping from thought to thought, the interviewer in absolute hysterics. Talk about going off topic! But for me, that was the beauty of the man! He let go, succumb to his “little spark of madness” and in the process made so many people happy because of it.

Out of this we should all remember how incredibly important self-care is. If that’s the one thing we can take away from such a tragedy it is look after yourself first, do things that nuture you and your soul, seek out the people who build you up, love and care for you. Because at some stage, all the giving, will catch up to you. So make sure you’ve got some strategies in place to take some time out, reassess and redefine what’s important to you. And most importantly, what WORKS for you.

I’ve found so many amazing tributes over the last few days, that have brought me to tears. This clip. This clip is where it’s at. Share your madness with the world. Never be afraid to do that. Never ever.

Thank you Robin Williams.Your legacy and laughter will live on.

Sam CannellThe Fabulous Woman Projectwww.thefabulouswomanproject.com

Tell us about your business and how you got started? My business is The Fabulous Woman Project, a 6 month online transformational program for women who want to feel fabulous and change their life. I have been in various businesses over the past 7 years, I started as a virtual assistant when we were living in London and haven’t been able to return to the workplace since! I started blogging at the same time I started studying health coaching because I knew it was vital that I built my list before I was ready to launch as a business. Blogging and sending newsletters gave me the confidence that I could make an impact in the world. What is your favourite tool/software program that you use for your business? It would have to be my CRM and online program tool, Simplero. It manages emails, takes payments and houses my online program.

What is the hardest thing about having your own business? Learning how to juggle all of the different tasks and how to prioritise. I’ve got much better at this lately but

Your favourite part of having your own business? The flexibility, I have a very active role in my children’s life – I can be there at school pick-ups, go on excursions and don’t have to panic if they need to stay home sick. I try not to ‘work’ too much around them but I also think it’s great that they are seeing an alternative to having a ‘job’ when they grow up. When you were a child, what did you want to be when you ‘grew up’? A hairdresser! What do you feel is the biggest challenge facing women in business? I think for many women it’s having the confidence to ask for help, whether it be delegating to an assistant or getting outside financial advice – we are terrible at assuming we have to ‘do it all’ ourselves. If there is one area in your business you feel you could improve on, what would it be? The main area I want to improve on is building my brand’s exposure through PR and marketing. I now have the confidence that my program can change lives but to be successful I need to get it in front of a much larger audience. What book/blog are you currently reading? May Cause Miracles by Gabby Bernstein

Your favourite quote? ‘Start before you are ready’ Where do you see yourself in 5 years? Where do you see your business? I see myself running health retreats in Australia and abroad as an ‘add on’ to my program. My program will be a household name like other big name online health programs are now. My business will be providing all of our family income and we’ll be travelling regularly overseas.

Sam is married with 2 gorgeous daughters and a puppy called Max, she currently lives on 3 acres on the Fleurieu Peninsula where she loves the slower pace of country life. Sam is also a Sass Leader and holds regular Sass and Shine coffeee catch ups in Victor Harbor and surrounds.

Kylie PearceAshloc Designswww.hand-made.com.au/ashlocdesigns

Kylie Pearce used to be a maternity, newborn and baby photographer but when she became a mum to her 2 “crazy” boys Ashton and Lockie, she decided to turn her talents to something she could do whilst being at stay at home mum.

Tell us about your business and how you got started? My business is Ashloc Designs. I make bright and colourful polymer clay jewellery. Each bead is rolled, sanded and polished by hand.

My original plan was to buy wholesale jewellery from the USA and resell it as a way to make a bit of extra cash.

But while on holiday in Melbourne I stumbled across a market in St Kilda Beach. There was this one jewellery stall that was just packed, people were pushing there way in to get to the front. My fiance urged me to go and see what the fuss was about. I didn’t know then, but that’s when my business inspiration began.

Once I finally was able to get to the front and see

what was being sold at the stall, I fell in love instantly. Polymer clay jewellery. It was so bright, colourful and unique. I had no idea you could even buy coloured clay. I knew then and there that I could do this... and I could even do it better.

I ordered my first stock pile of clay while we were still on holidays and it was waiting for me when I got home. Then, the real fun began. I was hooked!

It has turned out to be a little more work then i first anticipated (I'm a bit of a perfectionist) and there has been a lot of trial and error but that’s all part of the fun. Now... business is booming!

What is your favourite tool/software program that you use for your business?Adobe Photoshop - I would seriously be lost without it.

What is the hardest thing about having your own business?Trying to keep a balance between work time and family time.

Your favourite part of having your own business? That I can work from home and be there for my family. I’m my own boss. I make the rules.

What book/blog are you currently reading?Memory by Christoph Marzi. Even before Twilight made it cool, I’ve loved anything supernatural!

What is your favourite ‘business rev up’ song? There are so many, but my current fave is Ugly Heart by GRL

Your favourite quote?Hope Dies Last - I have it tattooed on my wrist.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years? Where do you see your business? My plan is to have my own big light studio space outside of my home with at least t wo employees working under me. I see my jewellery being stocked in at least 20 more stores in Australia as well as a number of international stockists.

Kylie lives with her my fiancé Brett, her 2 boys Ashton (5) and Lockie (3) and her crazy labrador Indy in the outskirts of Adelaide.

"I KNEW I COULD DO THIS... AND I COULD

EVEN DO IT BETTER!"

WHEN STARTING A BUSINESS IS LIKE HAVING A BABY | 9

WHEN STARTING A BUSINESS IS LIKE HAVING A BABY

So I have been thinking lately about how much starting Sass Place has been like what it was like to be pregnant with my son. Here are a few of my thoughts on the journey of starting a business….

The early stages…Just like the first 12 weeks of pregnancy, the first few months of setting up your business are a quiet, secretive time. You only tell the select few around you, a.) for fear of someone else stealing your business idea (entrepreneurs have to move fast!!!) and b.) because your track record is that you are coming up with new business ideas every 5 minutes and want to be really sure that this is ‘it’ before telling the world!

The anticipation of your new arrival and choosing a name…That nervous excitement can be all consuming. You want to get your biz out to the world and shout from the rooftops, but you are also nervous. How will you cope? What will people think? Will you know what to do? You don’t know how to run a business, do you?

The name. Seriously. I swear this is the hardest part of a business. You search every domain possible. You scour the government register to see if your name sis picked. You check the trademarks website. Then finally when you think you have it, a facebook page pops up with the same name and its back to the drawing board. Then it happens, like a light bulb, it comes to you (probably in the shower), and everything falls into place. And that’s where the next part comes in…

Doctors checkups…Accountants (Gst what?!), lawyers (dot the I’s & cross the t’s), mentors (worth their weight in gold!), graphic designers (21 logo revisions later….), web designer (SEO who? No I’m not a company, I’m self employed), bank (please give me money!!), bookkeepers (is Xero a number?)…. The number of meetings you have as you are setting up your business are phenomenal. You start to wonder if you are EVER going to get there, and your brain is overwhelmed with all the information thrown your way. Can I actually do this? Am I ready? Do I know enough to bring a business into this world?

WORDS | CARLY THOMPSON-BARRY

WHEN STARTING A BUSINESS IS LIKE HAVING A BABY

Page 12: Sass Chat - August/September 2014

WHEN STARTING A BUSINESS IS LIKE HAVING A BABY | 10

The Setting up of the nursery…Or the office or the shop front! You get everything new, you spend hours in officeworks selecting just the right colour combination (you have read up on google about what colours mean happiness and success), because if its not all new and looking schmick your productivity may not be enough and the ‘universe’ may pick up on the old juju and not think you’re serious enough! You then later realize that you don’t need all the fandangle things you bought and those fancy trays and those swanky coloured folders that while they look great, really prove no purpose as you are paperless and everything is on your laptop.

The advice…Everyone has some. Some is welcome and appreciated, some not so much. You get the naysayers – ‘why would you want to take that risk’, ‘it will never work’, ‘there is already something like that out there’, ‘why don’t you just get a real job’? And then the talk of failure starts, before you have even started!!! You bite your tongue, and think to yourself ‘I will show you’!!! I can do this on my own!

The exhaustion…Carrying around a baby is exhausting. The weight of a business bears on your shoulders. Afternoon naps are needed as you often spend the nights tossing and turning from pregnancy insomnia. Startup business insomnia is similar, your brain won’t switch off as its full of ideas and things you need to do, only thing is that there is no time for afternoon naps as you are busy in meetings, picking products, google searching, writing your business plan or freaking out about your competitiors and if you have made the right decision!!

You wake up in the middle of the night in a panic about open day and whether or not you can do this. You have quit your ‘day job’ and aren’t sure yet how you will pay the rent each month!

Friendships…. What friendships?Your friendship circle changes. You realize that many of your friends don’t ‘get’ you, and you start to make new ones. You join a networking

group. You go to information nights and workshops on how to birth a 6-figure business. And you find a new circle that become ‘your people’. You talk about your business babies over lunch, coffee, dinner, pretty much whenever you are together – how you manage your receipts, bragging about how many hours your worked this week and nodding as you talk about how you ran out of milk again because you were too busy responding to the 190 emails in your inbox to get to the shop!

The weight gain…So pregnancy weight gain is often around 12kgs… Thankfully ‘business startup weight gain’ hasn’t been that much on these hips of mine, but the pants have gone up a size (one bonus is the bra size has too!) as eating routines are out of wack. Exercise has been put on the backburner as you realize you cant do everything, so you just do the best you can. Renovation bootcamp helps as you prepare to open the doors of the business. Late nights become a ‘grab whatever you can get’ because you are so ‘hangry’ you are worried you may eat your own arm. Generally because you got caught up on social media or writing a blog post…..

The assumptions…You’re glowing, you appear to have it all together, so therefore people assume you’re succeeding, when really you are going day by day and just ‘keep swimming’. Everyone assumes because of what the exterior looks like, the inside is the same. But you’re feeling exhausted, you didn’t have time to wash your hair or shave your legs, you added on extra makeup to cover up the big pimple on your chin and your bank balance is at $25.50.

Page 13: Sass Chat - August/September 2014

Or the office or the shop front! You get The arrival…If you have a shop front or are opening doors those last 24 hours are insanely busy, as you put the final touches in, you clean the skirting boards because you are sure someone will notice if there is dust and you try and get your software program up and running. In fact, in regards to Sass Place, It was really 2 weeks before we opened the doors that we literally didn’t stop. Give me my 8 hour child birth any day!!!

"your view on life changes. you have a

higher level of respect for those who have

done the same"

The Unexplainable feeling of birth….You’ve done it. You sit back for 5 minutes (between meetings) and take a look around you and realize I have done this!!!!! Yes you talk yourself up in your head for a moment, because what you have just achieved not many have the guts to do. You’re heart is so full you feel like it might expolode! You have just been on a massive learning curve and are likely a completely different person to what you were at the start, and your business is too. Your view on life changes, you hold a greater sense of gratitude and a high level of respect for those who have done the same. Your baby is here and you want to tell the whole world!!!

So I think that pretty much sums up some of the beginnings of business, from conception to birth. Sass Place has been born, and I think we were reborn with it. Different people to what we were 6 months ago. More grown up, more knowledgeable, wiser, more grateful for the opportunities we have had and the people we have met and ready to take on the next stage of learning how to be ‘business parents’. Stay tuned…..

RECIPE | 12

Chia Seeds are so tiny, it really is quite amazing what’s packed in to these little balls.

They are chock full of protein, healthy fats and dietary fibre. Plus you score the added benefits of minerals, which include calcium, magnesium, iron and phosphorous.

You will find that you are getting so many health benefits from Chia Seeds, you will wonder why you didn’t add them into everything beforehand. And because Chia Seeds are super versatile, you can add them in at Breakfast time to other nuts and seeds with a dollop of yogurt. Or bulk up your morning smoothie. You can even use them in savoury dishes or hide some in Bliss Balls for the kids, for that extra nutritional punch.

If you have trouble feeling full, a great benefit of Chia Seeds is that they absorb a lot of water and therefore make you feel fuller for longer.

So try adding this Superfood into your eating program and notice the benefits.

THE COUNTDOWN IS ON To...THE SASS SUMMIT

I’d be surprised if, somewhere along your business journey, you haven’t heard this... “We never get any of the amazing events that the Eastern states get for women in business here in Adelaide”.

I know I have heard it a handful of times since I started my business back in 2005. And I have to admit it’s the sort of thing I have said on occassion.

That joy when you find an event geared towards women in business, with an amazing line-up... only to be heart broken when you find it’s being held interstate. Add the cost of flights, accommodation and spending and you’re half way to Las Vegas. Not to mention the time you have to take off to travel there, attend, travel home and recover. It seems not worth it when you add it up.

When we set out at the start of the year to create a network and support group for women in business here in Adelaide, we thought we would take it upon ourselves to design and host an event unlike any seen here in Adelaide before.

And so The Sass Summit was born. We wanted to bring together a line up of phenomenonal speakers from right around Australia, to come to Adelaide end impart their knowledge and ideas on a sea of like-minded, passionate women in business. But not only that, we wanted to support our local Sass Sisters by giving them an opportunity to present at a world class event and propel themselves in the process.

Sitting down to plan The Summit, we were keen to pull together three key speakers who were making waves for women.

Earlier this year I was overjoyed watching Tracey Spicer strip herself bare on a TEDx talk which went viral. Here was this beautiful, professional women deconstructing herself on stage. What a refreshing concept! And yes, why were we putting ourselves in a position where our appearance spoke louder than our contribution to the world. Gah! She had me at HELLO.

We contacted Tracey, on the off chance she might be interested in what we were putting together and her response was just perfect. Something along the lines of “love what you’re doing... count me in!”.

So with our headline speaker confirmed, we turned to our amazing Sass Ambassador, Taryn Brumfitt who, despite being in the middle of her Kickstarter campaign (which saw her successfully raise over $350,000 to film and produce her documentary, Embrace) gave us another HELL YES, under the proviso that if The Ellen DeGeneres Show called, she would, understandably, be on the first flight to Los Angeles. That said, she has forfeited an interview with E News! to be at The Sass Summit and leaves for the US and Canada the day after!

Our third headline speaker, Julia Bickerstaff, was such an easy choice for us. As the creator of The Business Bakery, Julia is also a finance expert on Australia's Channel 7 show "Kochie's Business Builders" and a regular on ABC's Finance Quarter. She also writes regularly for for digital publications such as Smartcompany and Flying Solo. Not only that, her business and courses are focused on elping you make a Healthy Income from your handmade, boutique or intentionally-small business. Ummm... perfect!!

But the amazingness certainly doesn’t stop there. The Summit is split into two session paths which means delegates can customise the Summit to suit them.

The full line up of speakers include Nicole Daboul, from The Living Lunchbox in Sydney, Samantha Riley of Stress Free StartUps, Julianne Kuhlmann from Kool Results and Bec Derrington, Director of SourceBottle. We also have Jane Copeland from Coping with Jane, Miriam Castilla, best selling author of Today’s Woman, Helen Roe Mooney of The Orange Lantern, the inspirational Karen Gunton from build a little biz (and #lighthouserevolution) as well as Lisa Bondarenko-Halliday from Eshe Counselling and Mind Heart Body and Meegan Cassell, creative brain and director of Woddlers – For the little and Little Urban people PLUS Simone Douglas, Telstra Business Awards Nominee for 2014 and owner of Social Media AOK and Sophie Hampel from Inkling Women.

As this issue of Sass Chat goes to “print” we are over the moon to report that there are only a handful of tickets left to The Sass Summit.

So if you’ve been putting off purchasing your ticket to this full day event, including all catering, a jam packed goodie bag, door prizes and 3 hour cocktail networking event, then don’t delay and purchase your ticket at www.thesasssummit.com.au

We can’t wait to scale the Summit with you on Friday, 19 September at Crowne Plaza Adelaide.
