WELCOME Welcome to this edition of the SAS-SAR, we trust you will enjoy the journey with us. It is our aim to amaze you, to inform you and sometimes to amuse you. If you smile we have achieved our aim. We simply love trains, so come with us and forget the outside world for a few minutes. According to ISSUU it takes 6,45 minutes to read a normal copy of the SAS-SAR.

EDITORIAL Station Buildings

It cannot take much time or brains to solve the problem of people wrecking our former railway stations. I have visited many a historic railway station and I am sorry to say we need a plan to save these old buildings. I would let a “mama” or two live in these stations with the only condition that they are appointed special representatives of SPOORNET with the aim of preventing people looting the places for scrap metal. Look at Grahamstown Station, Sannaspos or take your pick! Historic stations dating from the time of the NGR, CGR, OVSS, ZASM, PPR, IMR & CSAR. You want to tell me that a parson or policeman cannot recommend a decent “train” loving citizen to live in such a place and guard it for coming generations. [On a personal level if I was a policeman I would have been ashamed if I was stationed at a place and the local (historical) railway station was damaged and plundered. I would do something about it!] I rest my case!

PRASA

We wonder if PRASA knows about the passenger coaches that the Wepener’s took pictures of. There is a great need for carriages, why can’t we refurbish our carriages and keep them in service for another while? At Pretoria Station

4

Page 5: SAS-SAR Vol 6 No 2

there are coaches now parked, at the same spot, for years with open windows. Why not look after the “people’s property”?

Corporate Identity

We all have to agree that the paint of the old SAR was very durable. Somebody once told me it was Dulux Paint that the SAR applied to locomotives and carriages. Have a look at the tatty exterior of our trains especially the “Premier Classe”. Never mind the tatty exterior – look at the dirty locomotives and dirty goods trucks and passenger carriages. If trains and their locomotives are clean it says something about the railways and their service delivery. There are many unemployed people; my Uncle started his railway career as a cleaner of locomotives. Why oh why the dirty locomotives? One railwayman told me they were in the haulage business and clean locomotives were not a priority. If your locomotive is spotless, it is then driven with care and the crew take ownership of the locomotive as well as the railways which they serve with pride.

WISH LIST Unlike many other free electronic magazines the pages of the old ULOLIWE and the new SAS-SAR have never been swamped with irritating adverts. It has always been my intention to always keep it that way, and to also keep this publication freely assessable to everyone!

The problem is, the more advanced and complicated technology becomes, the more expenses creep in. For example: A challenge that often confronts us is the dilemma of presenting content in a manner that can be read on various devices, ranging from large-screen desktop computers to PC-tablets and cell phones.

We not only need a few pence as an honorarium for the webmaster/design/layout artist, but we also need a few US $ per annum to keep our National Security Website and our railway magazines in cyber space for coming generations. Cyber space is the most cost effective way to have your own museum or library. No “rent” no “house breaking and theft” or security problems.

When the subject of fundraising was debated earlier my initial wish was that we should consider approaching “interesting” advertisers. I thought of Grinrod, Plasser, Bombadier, Spoornet, Transwerk and many others. Nevertheless, we decided not to rush into things but to first opt for the “no-advert” alternative and published a PROMO VIDEO as a trial run.

WEPENER’S PERAMBULATIONS

2015-02-01 Hi guys.

Friedesheim and 34 417 returning from the section with a load bound for Kroonstad.

Grindrod heading to Odendaalsrus, Frieddes 1 Shaft and again, this time heading to Frieddies 5 shaft. 7

Page 8: SAS-SAR Vol 6 No 2

Harmony Surface Rail shunting at the Central plant.

I got a call from my driver friend, he told me he was bringing scrap coaches from Bloemfontein, heading to Durban. They travel at 30Km/h with this train and so their time was up at Virginia. Here another crew took over. A shot of something that is disappearing - the crew's "blikke". The FZ's are there for braking as the passenger coaches are all "Deurpype" through pipes, which means they have no brakes.

The will be covered in part 2.

Lastly some photos at Whites - amazingly the station still stands intact after it has been closed.

Cheers. J & J.

Part 2

Hi guys. We arrived at Virginia and the crew mini bus was already standing in the shade waiting. A while later the train pulled in behind E 1377. The crews changed and slowly she continued. Near Kalkvlakte she crawled past and the last shots are at Whites. What the coaches are going to do in Durban is anyone's guess ?? It is going to take a while for them to get there at 30Km/h!! They are destroyed and stripped on the inside and outside. The first and last coaches are 2nd class, the rest 3rd class, "kerkies" and "lala" class. Cheers. J & J.

2105-02-05 Hi guys.

13

Page 14: SAS-SAR Vol 6 No 2

At Friedesheim 34 409 was just leaving for Kroonstad after shunting the timber siding. The pick-up is arriving at Wesselbron behind 34 417.

Just south of Kingswood this pair of 10E's sped past, hoots from the crew.

Between Losdorings and Wesselsbron 34 499 heading towards the silos at Wesselsbron.

Makwassie station and the Klerksdorp bound pick-up just finishing the shunting at the silos.

Southbound 10E's just before Makwassie. Shortly after this train went past the pick-up left for Klerksdorp.

Then a big surprise - 4x brand new 20E's speeding past at an incredible lick - the ground shook as the 110 wagon train thundered past...

Cheers. J & J.

Hi guys.

34 409 was returning from the section, here she is at Odendaalsrus, en-route to Kroonstad.

At Kingswood the 2x 18E's were just pulling out of the silos after completing the pick-up work.

16

Page 17: SAS-SAR Vol 6 No 2

Just before Drie Ruiters a long load of southbound empties headed past, hoots from the crew.

Then again, more empties, southbound, this time behind 10E's, this was just after Drie Ruiters.

At Bloemhof heading north, a load of coking coal.

Lastly, something that you don't see anymore "igloos" that were used for the railway workers camps. Then at the old Transtel building a hut market "Van Schoor" don't know from where but seems to be used for security nowadays. Cheers. J & J.

Mel Turner Since the bureaucratic Spoornet Leasing model is unable compete with the new breed of nimble well financed free enterprise leasing operators; it has been forced to form a JV with Thelo to survive. Martin Nel Dis van Botswana Rail. Co-Co EMD V12 2 stroke turbo. 1680Kw. 6 February at 17:45 · Edited · Like

Klas 35-200 = 1065 Kw teenoor 1680Kw vir die BD 221 6 February at 18:38 · Like

6 February at 18:43 · Like · 1

Mel Turner Is this the pair that went to Grindrod Pretoria a couple of weeks ago? were sighted at Cor Delfos and by the AR&TS guys

Mel Turner Botswana D013 - D032

Mel Turner GT22LC, so similar to Zimbabwe GT22LC-2. The L indicates lightweight so they have the GL-C bogies, and should weigh around 90 tonnes. The GL-C maxes out with a total loco weight of 210,000 lbs. The engines are 12-645E3, so the same as the engines in the 20 2250 Class purchased by Transnet from Aurizon

Mel Turner CFM also have GT22LC-2, 9 in use plus the one now stored at Grindrod 79

Touwsrivier

Glenn Elsden, Japie Terblanche, Jade Wilson and 25 others like this.

Francois Mattheüs Ons weet mos waarheen daardie assuransiegeldjies is...

Groete Dreyer

Adv Anton Alberts (via J Wepener) Dear Pensioner, I would like to provide more feedback on the court case and bonuses: 1. Court Case: We have been informed that Transnet and the two pension funds will not try to appeal the class action court order any more. This is good news and means that the legal team can now attend to the claims against Transnet and the government without any further delays. 2. Bonuses: The bonus payable at the end of April will be for the members of the Transnet Second Defined Benefit Fund and the Transport Pension Fund’s “Transnet Subfund”. Thank you for your patience thus far. Your court case is steaming ahead and justice is on the horizon. Keep on praying and believing. Best wishes

Peter Dearlove Good day Hennie I have recently developed an interest in trains (especially locos) and am still at the stage where I can hardly tell the front of a loco from the back. I live in Dundee KZN where the through traffic is limited. I would like to make contact with other enthusiasts in KZN who would be willing to be patient with my ignorance and probably, at times, even stupid questions. I managed to find your monthly magazine on Internet last night and was immediately hooked. Have a great day Regards Peter Dearlove Cell 082 876 2254 Peter Dearlove <[email protected]>
