Library Corner… Book Review

The Lost Girls of Paris ...by Pam Jenoff

H aving read The Commandant’s Girl also by Pam Jenoff, I knew I would be drawn to another of her books. Her style

of writing draws you to the characters she builds her stories around. And, the book is based on a true story. The story begins with the finding of an abandoned suitcase containing pictures of several women and one woman’s efforts to learn who these women were.

W e discover these women played an integral part in the mission of the SOE, a British WWII espionage organization.

These female agents came from different walks of life but had one common goal and they fiercely prided themselves on their mission. The women bravely sacrificed so much and many became victims of Germany’s Nazi regime. We are reminded of the gender equality issues that prevailed in the World War II time period. The book details the female experience during World War II and details the strength, courage and passion these ordinary women exhibited during wartime. While the characters are lost, they ultimately found so much more.

P am Jenoff has a rich background, having worked at the Pentagon, as a diplomat for the State Department handling Holocaust issues in Poland, and in addition to writing, Pam

teaches law school. ...submitted by Gretchen Ross

Removing Presidents In our entire history, Congress has taken serious steps toward removing only four presidents, including three in the late 20th century (Nixon, Reagan, and Clinton). In each case, they applied a section of the Constitution that is relatively ambiguous on what justifies such a drastic action. If we examine the context, causes, and results of each case in detail, what can we learn about how this power to remove a president actually functions?

SARTELL CONNECTION NOV - DEC 2019 8 Pinochle

There will be a class for those wanting to learn how to play pinochle. The hands-on class will include a handout of helpful hints, as well as step by step practice on playing the game. Class and practice will coincide with the regular Wednesday game time. Normally within 3 practice sessions, one can play the game with relative confidence.

Pinochle is a card game with bidding, meld and somewhat unusual rules from most other card games. It gives one a chance to compete in a friendly manner, bluff on occasion and laugh. It is challenging, fun to play and affords one the opportunity to interact with other adults. Pinochle is usually played by 2 teams of 2 partners, but can by played with 3,5 or 6 players, with some rule modifications.

Handouts for the various types of pinochle will also be included in the class along with score sheets, how to keep score and count points.

A quote from a new player last year, “There is something about playing pinochle that keeps one playing every week.”

Sartell Historical Society Happenings

Lighting becomes more important as people age. According to the American Lighting Association (ALA), with each passing year, everyone requires more light to see properly. Terry McGowan, director of engineering for the ALA, says, “Older eyes experience two important changes.” · First, the amount of light required to sustain visual performance increases with age. Research shows that a 60-year-old needs twice as much light as a 30-year-old.

· Second, with time, human eyes become more sensitive to glare. This can seem like a bit of a Catch-22, as more light can often result in increased glare. That’s what makes the quality of light more important as you grow older. With many baby boomers reaching their mid-60s, homeowners should consider user age as a factor in their home lighting design. It is easy to enhance the visual performance and enjoyment for baby boomers and older folks with a few simple lighting adjustments:

· Turn on one or two table lamps while watching TV to reduce the contrast between the bright screen and the surrounding darkness.

· Use a torchiere (floor lamp) for uplighting as well as downward illumination for versatility. Look for a

fixture with a separate task light attached or one with a glass bowl at the top to shine some light downward. Have a task light that can be directed or pivoted. In addition to providing sufficient light, proper lighting design is essential to human health. “As

people get older, it isn’t just the amount of light, it is also the color of the light and when it is applied, that is key to regulating things such as circadian rhythm and REM sleep cycles,” says McGowan. Growing research indicates that light can impact human health in numerous ways, including susceptibility to Alzheimer’s disease.

The question is: What exactly can aging people do to help their eyes and health?

The answer, according to McGowan, is to enjoy bright days and dark nights.

“If you’re older and don’t sleep very well, expose yourself to bright light, such as daylight,

early in the morning ... a walk outside will do it ... and sleep in a dark room at night.

That will do everything required to regulate your circadian rhythm,” says McGowan.
