‘Old Saratoga’ UnitIf you’re visiting during the summer, you can catch a tour of the Schuyler House, climb 188 steps to the top of the Monument, and hike through Victory Woods! The Schuyler House and Monument open for the season Memorial Day weekend and remain open through mid-October; Victory Woods is open year-round. For specifi c operating hours and general information, please call the visitor center information desk: 518-670-2985.

British forces were surrounded here during the week before they surrendered to the American army. The trail is self-guided and offers a raised, accessible 1/2 mile pathway with interpretive signs. RECOMMENDED TIME: 30–45 Minutes

Junior Ranger Day: April 15 10am–3pmKick off National Park Week with some special activities—programs are available for children of allages! Ongoing activities include a touch table, kid-friendly relay course, uniform try-on station forkids, and Junior Ranger activity book!

Basic Orienteering Class: April 20 6pm–7pmLearn how to read a map and compass; then practice those skills outdoors on a simpleorienteering course. Maps and compasses will be provided. This course is free, but pre-registrationis required and space is limited to 24 participants—to register, please call (518)670-2985.

Woodcock Aerial Displays: April 27 6pm–8pmJoin park naturalist Linda White to see amazing dusk-time aerial displays by woodcocks,listen for owls, and look for deer or foxes too! This walk is about 3 miles over unevenground—please bring a fl ashlight, water, insect repellent, and wear sturdy shoes.

East Meets West: April 30 1pm–3pmJoin Skidmore College Professor Tillman Nechtman to learn about the connection between India and the American Revolution. Then enjoy a concert of 18th-century Indian music by renowned musician and Skidmore College music department lecturer Veena Chandra.

I Love My Park Day: May 6 9am–1pmA statewide volunteer service day sponsored by Parks & Trails New York (PTNY) and New York State Parks. Saratoga will be participating by offering several volunteering opportunities—pre-register at www.ptny.org.

point in America’s Revolutionary War and were key to winning American independence.

Frost Faire: January 28 11am–3pmFrost Faires were hugely popular in the 1700s—carry on the tradition at the 22nd annual Frost Faire at the Battlefi eld!

Guided Winter Hikes: February 11; March 19 1pm–2:30pmJoin a park ranger for a guided hike through the battlefi eld, get in touch with the natural surroundings, and learn a few survival skills—all while walking in the footsteps of history!

Lunch & Learn: February 22; March 22; April 26 12pm–1pmBring a bag lunch and join a park ranger to beat cabin fever a bit by enjoying special presentations on some lesser-known topics from the American Revolution.

Bike Summit: May 21 9am–5pmJoin us and a variety of local bike organizations and shops to prep your gear for the 2017 biking season—events include the unveiling of new fi xit stations, bike skills training, bike safety messages, tune-ups and safety checks, and a 5-mile ranger-guided bike tour.

Memorial Day: May 29 10am–4pmNearly 500 Americans were killed or wounded in the Battles of Saratoga, most were from New England. This special event focuses on the sacrifi ces made by Connecticut militia offi cers and soldiers who lost their lives at Saratoga in 1777.

Raptors Rock: June 11 1:30pm–3pmWildlife educator and rehabilitator Trish Marki will bring a selection of raptors for you to meet up close and to hear about where they live and how they survive in their habitat.

Peter Salem Day: June 17 Lectures at 10am & 2pmA number of remarkable African American men served in the American Revolution—hear stories about a few of the many hundreds of free and enslaved black men who fought here at Saratoga in 1777!

Living History Day: June 18 10am–4pmAs part of NYS Path Through History Weekend, Saratoga NHP offers a single-day event with “living history” demonstrations—presentations of several examples from everyday civilian and military life in 1770s America.

Independence Day: July 4 Citizenship Ceremony 10am–11amCelebrate and give cheers as 20 immigrants become citizens of the USA! Enjoy patriotic music and hear the crack of musket fi re and booming cannons. Join in 13 lemonade toasts to the “new” United States.

Declaration of Independence 2pm–2:30pmJoin Park Ranger Emeritus Joe Craig as he portrays a town crier declaring America’s Independence and leads a rousing 13 celebratory toasts.

Children’s Program Series: July 5, 12, 19 & 26 1pm–3pmEducator Shari Crawford delights children while teaching them about the lives of youngsters in 18th-century America.

Evening Bike Tours: July 6, 13, 18 & 25; August 2, 9 & 16 6pm–8pmJoin a park ranger for gentle rides along 4-6-mile sections of the park while hearing a variety of park stories. Please bring your bike, water, and insect repellent. Helmets are required.

Army Trades Weekend: July 15–16 10am–4pmArmies in the American Revolution were towns on the move and included important craftsmen like blacksmiths, carpenters, tailors, cordwainers, coopers, and tinsmiths. Chat with demonstrators and learn “How it’s Made” 18th-century style!

Noontime Music Series: August 1, 8, 15, 22 &29 12pm–1pmThe track is closed but music echoes through the Hudson River Valley, help us in celebrating several notable anniversaries throughout the month of August. Bring a bag lunch and enjoy the views while listening to noontime concerts every Tuesday. Sponsored by the Friends of Saratoga Battlefi eld.

18th-Century Day: August 13 12pm–5pmStep back in time at the historic Schuyler House as the grounds come alive with 18th-century activities. Listen to music, see puppet shows, chair caning, candle dipping, beer brewing, spinning, dyeing, quilting, tinsmithing, broom making, and more!Hosted by the Old Saratoga Historical Association.

National Bike Your Park Day: September 30Join the celebration of National Public Lands Day! Explore your parks and public lands by cycling with thousands of people across the country on the same day—the second annual Bike Your Park Day! Bring your friends and family and help them discover the bicycling opportunities in your backyard. A special program will be offered during the afternoon; details will be made available in August.

Candlelight Tour: October 14 6pm–9pmStep back in time and experience General Philip Schuyler’s 1777 country homein a whole new light! Candlelit tours of the house are offered throughout theevening with light refreshments, period music, and a campfi re following the tour.Hosted by the Old Saratoga Historical Association.

Veterans Day: November 11 10am–3pmJoin us in honoring those who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces, includingthe Continental soldiers and militiamen who served here at Saratoga in 1777.Musket fi ring demonstrations and discussions about Revolutionary War American soldiers will take place throughout the day.

Challenge:Complete 100 miles or more of hiking or biking at Saratoga National Historical Park between May 1 and October 31, 2017.

Participants:Register as a 100 Mile Challenge participant by sending your name and email address to: [email protected] with the subject line “100 Mile Challenge,” then hike or bike away! Log each walk on the log form provided to you, adding your miles throughout the year. Once you’ve accumulated 100 total miles on roads and trails in Saratoga National Historical Park, return the completed log to the visitor center on or before October 31, 2017 to claim your 100 Mile Challenge award.

Dogs can join in too!Dogs are great companions for enjoying the outdoors and are allowed on our trails as long as they are leashed. To complete this challenge, each participating pet must hike 100 miles in the park with their human companion; just add their name to your registration e-mail.
