Women’s KayakingPresenter: Linda Lindeyer,Swift Canoe & Kayak Karen’s Clinic will cover kayak equipment that has been designed specifically for women’s needs. She will cover the importance of lightweight kayaks and paddles. Karen shows you how to handle your boat on and off the water and how to load it on to your car by yourself! Karen also touches on properly fitting women’s specific life jackets and other new equipment!.

Tandem Canoeing SkillsPresenter: Charlie Wilson,Swift Canoe & Kayak Charlie will present an overview of tandem canoeing skills. After discussing paddle physics and bio-mechanics, the clinic emphasizes basic directional control for sitting paddlers using Sit and Switch Technique, before progressing to more advanced kneeling techniques including skidded turns, sideslips and efficient forward travel without correctional effort.

Pack Boat ClinicPresenter: Charlie Wilson,Swift Canoe & KayakCharlie will discuss pack canoe design concepts including the creature comfort versus performance debate before moving to use, including what waters they are best used on. He will demonstrate how to load gear into a pack canoe and paddler entry and egress. Vertical verse horizontal paddling styles will be contrasted and paddle selection will be discussed.

Saratoga Paddlefest • The Capital Region’s Largest Paddlesports Sale

Charlie Wilson Swift Canoe & KayakCharlie formerly chaired the American Canoe Association’s Instruction Council, was instrumental in developing current FreeStyle technique and has written and contributed to several books and magazine articles on canoeing skills. He has been a principle in both Bell Canoe Works and Placid Boatworks and currently consults with Swift Canoe and Kayak on infusion technology.

Saratoga Paddlefest 2014 Free Demos & ClinicsDuring Paddlefest you can attend lectures and demonstrations by paddling experts to learn how to choose a boat, sharpen your techniques and more!

SUP Top Ten Tips.Presenter: Danny Mongno, Werner PaddlesGuest instructor Danny Mongno of Werner Paddles will cover an extensive amount of SUP material in our new presentation, SUP Top Ten Tips. This will cater to the en-try level to mid-range skill paddler; however we invite advanced paddlers who may be looking to learn some teaching skills to help others. You will walk away with skills and exercises to take home and advance your SUP paddling.

Easier Paddling for all Skill Levels Presenter: Danny Mongno, Werner PaddlesJoin Werner Paddles kayak instructor, Danny Mongno, as he helps you develop a more relaxing and more efficient set of techniques to use in your kayak. In the end, no matter what kind of kayaker you are, you will be using less energy, spending more time on the water and enjoying yourself more.

Choosing the Right KayakPresenter: Matt Yablonowski, Confluence WatersportsWith an overwhelming number of possibilities in boat designs and features, choosing the right kayak or canoe can be a challenge these days. Let’s overcome that challenge as we look at each category and investigate which boat is the best option for you.

Design and ConstructionPresenter: David Yost & Bill Swift, Swift Canoe & KayakDavid will start the Clinic by describing how Swift takes a boat from design con-cept to the point where it is ready to put into production. He will discuss what to look for in today’s boat market. Swift will follow with a discussion on Modern Boat Building Materials and Construction methods. Bill will review current boat building materials including Polyethylene, Thermoformed Plastics and Composite Materials.

Danny Mongno, Werner PaddlesDanny Mongno has been paddling for 24 years, starting work at a kayak shop on Long Island when he was 16 and has been on the paddle sports “Tour” now for 14 years. “Werner Paddles has given me the opportunity to do what I love for a living and a day does not go by that I am not thankful or stoked to be a paddler.” Keep an eye out for him when he swings through town on the running trail, local surf spot or any where else that paddlers gather. Bar stools not excluded.

Bill Swift, Swift Canoe & KayakBill Swift is one of those lucky one’s who grew up with parents that owned both a canoe tripping camp and a canoe rental operation in Algonquin Park, Ontario. Bill founded Swift Canoe & Kayak in 1989 and is still at the helm today.

David Yost, Swift Canoe & KayakDavid Yost may be the most versatile and prolific designer of human-powered watercraft today. His philosophy, that canoes should be adapted to the needs of people rather than adapting people to the canoe, has led to a devoted following.

Lucy Lindeyer, Swift Canoe & KayakIf Lucy Lindeyer isn’t paddling rivers, lakes and coastlines of New England in a kayak then she’s on her stand up paddle board. An ACA certified kayak instructor, lifeguard and SOLO Wilderness First Aider, Lucy loves the great outdoors and seeks adventure both on water and off.

16 Adirondack Paddlefest • The Nation’s Largest On-Water Paddlesports Sale!

Welcome to the 16th Annual Adirondack Paddlefest!

Test paddle as many different boats as you like.

On-water demonstrations throughout the weekend.

America’s Largest On-water Canoe, Kayak and Paddleboard SaleFrom our very first year in 1999 Adirondack Paddlefest has become the premier on-water canoe, kayak and SUP demo and sale in the country. Our location in Old Forge offers a large beach for test paddling, close accommodations and restaurants, and ample park-ing. Adirondack Paddlefest has the largest selection of canoes, kayaks, and SUPs on sale anywhere in the northeast. It also features continuous on-water paddling, clinics, demos, lectures, classes, food and fun for the whole family. Leading manufacturers will be on hand. Factory reps and industry experts will help get you on the water with right canoe, kayak, SUP, and equipment.

More than 1,000 Canoes, Kayaks and SUPs on SaleEvery canoe, kayak and paddleboard will be on sale. Hundreds of models from the lead-ing brands will be displayed. There will be tandem, solo and pack canoes. Whatever style kayak you want will be here: recreational, touring and light-touring, tandem, sit-on-top, whitewater, kids and more. And we’ll have SUPs for every level of paddler, from novice to experienced racers!

Test Paddle Before You Buy At Paddlefest you will see literally hundreds of Canoes, Kayaks, Stand-Up-Paddleboards, and whitewater boats, instead of a few dozen display models. Talk about comparison shopping! You can test paddle as many different canoes and kayaks as you like, in real world conditions!

On-water Demonstrations & clinics, NOT lectures! At Adirondack Paddlefest we provide you with live, on-water demonstrations and clinics by some of paddlesports’ leading experts. While most large paddlesports shows offer a variety of discussions and clinics in stuffy lecture halls at Adirondack Paddlefest, you’ll see and witness first hand real on water demonstrations, clinics and lessons involv-ing some of the industries leading paddling experts. So why go inside to a crowded and noisy convention hall when you can enjoy the beauty of the Adirondacks and see that real paddlers do.

There will be plenty of paddling, browsing & shopping, and demonstrations to keep you busy all weekend. But if that’s not enough, there will be the REEL Paddling Film Festival, the Adirondack Paddler’s Photo Contest, fun, and more fun! Here are a few things to know to help you plan your weekend at Adirondack Paddlefest.

• Admission is $5 per day and Children under 12 are free.

• Test Paddle is $20 for the entire weekend & includes admission to Paddlefest. PFDs and paddles are pro-vided. Test fee is redeemable for boat purchase at Adirondack Paddlefest 2014.

• Demonstrations will be held throughout the week-end. Check the schedule inside this guide for details.

• Weather: Spring weather ranges from cool to warm, wet to dry. Dress accordingly and bring along a few layers so you can be comfortable.

So why not introduce them to the fun that can be had in a kayak. In these introductory clinics children will be introduced to the safety and paddling basics – life jackets, getting in and out of a kayak, going forward, backward and easy turns. Then it’s on to the games where learning becomes fun as they will have races, tug of war and obstacle courses. The sessions are designed to build their confidence and provide ideas for making your family outings more fun. Each session is limited to 6 children and there will be at least two instructors per session to ensure both safety and a high level of attention. We do ask that if your child is participating in one of these sessions that you have a dry change of clothes readily available as kids tend to find ways to get wet when they are having fun. All sessions will be held on the boat demonstration beach.

Hurricane Skimmer 140After a season of success with the Skimmer 116 & 128, Hurricane is proud to introduce the Skimmer 140. The Skimmer 140 will score high with customers desiring more hull speed and increased capacity in a lighter weight SOT package. With the same graceful lines as the bird for which they’re named, the Skimmer Series SOTs are distinctive kayaks with an exquisite balance of performance and beauty that make them a pleasure to paddle. The Skimmer 140’s touring style hull and Trylon construction allow it to easily outpace other kayaks in its class, and its low seat-pan and comfortable outfitting make you feel totally connected with the boat.

Hurricane Tracer 165Hurricane upped the ante with the new Tracer 165 redesign. It has resulted in a lighter design with many deck improvements includ-ing a 5.5” day hatch positioned just forward of the cockpit and flush mounted bow/stern hatches for low windage. The new seat system on the Tracer 165 has been improved to provide more hit room and is com-plemented by their new adjustable Control Master Thigh Braces, and it now has a stainless steel security bar just aft of the cockpit to keep the boat from walking away in the wrong hands. It will come in 2 sizes, Small and Standard.

Hurricane Excursion 128Hurricane doesn’t sit on their laurels, they sit in their kay-aks, which is why they knew they could take one of their popular kayaks and make it even better. The result is the Excursion 128. Hurricane refined the hull, lowered the volume and add-ed some deck features you’ll love when you head out for a day trip or an overnighter—perimeter safety lines, bow and stern deck bungees, and a stainless steel security bar. This compact, sleek-performing boat is perfect for edging out tight turns in coastal inlets and winding rivers. You can even add a rudder for more precise handling.

Swift Kiwassa 14 Our Kiwassa series kayaks were designed to harmonize functionality with performance, and their popularity is a testament to the success of their design. Taking their design features a step further, the all-new Kiwassa 14 offers a roomy cockpit with a narrower hull shape and longer length, creating a balance between stability, paddling ease and tracking. At 14 feet, it offers the smooth tracking and glide of our sleek Saranac touring kayaks, but with a little more volume in the middle for a more comfortable ride and to accommodate easier entry and exit. The Kiwassa 14 is available in all our standard laminates and color options and in both the regular and a low volume version

Pack 13.6

What’s New in CanoesSwift Adirondack 10.6The new Swift Adirondack Pack 10.6 broadens the ca-pabilities of our Pack lineup by offering an ultra-light-weight boat that’s as nimble as it is capable. At just 16 lbs and available with a back-band configuration or with a high-back seat with lumbar padding, the Pack 10.6 has unparalleled comfort for a boat its size. For smaller to mid-size paddlers desiring the versatility of lightweight paddle craft, the Pack 10.6 makes for ef-fortless portages and unparalleled comfort on the wa-ter. With the Pack 10.6’s versatility it won’t restrict your options, it will expand them.”

Swift Keewaydin 14 & 15 Packs Algonquin Outfitters in Algonquin Park, has always been our largest rental dealer, and their desire for a new light-weight tripping option inspired the creation of the new Keewaydin 14 and Keewaydin 15 Pack boats. The prac-ticality and user-friendliness of Pack boats is the key to their appeal, so when AO asked for a high performance driven Pack boat capable of extended trips, we knew exactly where to go with the design. The new Keewaydin 14 and Keewaydin 15 Pack boats come with a deluxe high-back kayak seat with lumbar support, adjustable foot braces, and ultra lightweight carbon seat bases. Available for Spring 2014, these new designs will appeal to solo canoe trippers, kayak trippers, and those who need a multi-purpose boat for a variety of paddling scenarios.

What’s new in Whitewater

Wave Sport MobiusWavesport’s new freestyle machine is short and fast with forgiving qualities that allow beginners to the sport of freestyle to learn and progress quickly, while offering season competitors an experience they too will appreciate. Between rounded edges, the sculpted side walls and the soft curvature of the bow, this predictable design makes loops, mcnastys and phonix monkeys easy to initiate. It is extremely loose and fast on waves, featuring a continuous rocker profile and a stern release edge that allow quick acceleration down a wave. Available in three sizes…check out their new color options too!

Liquidlogic Stinger XPCrossover designs have established a huge fol-lowing in the world of paddling over the last five years becoming the fastest growing segment in whitewater. This game changing design com-bines the performance of its race-dominating sibling with the convenience and tracking of our award winning Remix XP design. The Stinger XP’s back hatch and spring-loaded skeg ensure it functions efficiently when loaded to the gills with camping gear for flatwater and mixed current expeditions. 12’5” long

Dagger Katana 10.4 & 9.7For the adventurer who is interested in the whitewater lifestyle and expedition style multi-water trips, but who doesn’t want to limit their kayaking adventures only to whitewater, the Katana is designed with confi-dence, flexibility and comfort in mind on flat or up to class III whitewater. At home in flat water or whitewa-ter, the hull is designed for initial stability while the beveled and flared side-walls create secondary stability making it forgiving in moving water.

Mountainman Outdoor Supply Company is happy to announce the following additions to our Paddleboard offerings. This year we will be welcoming Amundson, GSI, and Laird products to our paddlesports stores!

Like Mountainman, Amundson SUP has been involved in the watersports industry for decades. By growing up around lakes, rivers and oceans, we develop a relationship with the water and a desire to venture into liquid. John Amundson spends his time developing new de-signs for this evolving sport. He gets feedback from a network of dealers and customers, and innovates new and exciting ways to paddle over water. They then take these proven designs and manufacture them into products with high demand. Their high pressure and high tem-perature molds create a composite construction that has the best combination of weight, durability, and value on the water.

Global Surf Industries, or GSI for short, was founded in 2002 by Mark Kelly who believes “life is better when you surf.” Using this mantra in all aspects of the business, GSI has created some of the most well-known brands in the stand-up paddle industry. With an array of talented designers, each board caters to a particular type of paddler with a specific level of ability. GSI invests a lot of time and effort into new technologies, such as its brushed carbon, to help get the best performance from every experience. We are looking for these boards to be a great addition to our line for paddlers of every ability level.

Laird Hamilton is known as the guiding genius of crossover board sports, and is largely considered the primary influence behind many surfing innovations, including stand-up paddle boarding. His company, Laird StandUp, emphasizes that stability should go hand-in-hand with performance – accommodating all levels of paddlers, while exceeding all expectations for stability and performance. Their EPS technology allows for lightweight, high-quality construction in either their HP (high-performance) or Composite models, creating all-around, surf, touring, and race boards for any paddler. Laird and his company live and breathe water sports making them not too different from us here at Mountainman. Needless to say, offering Laird SUP was a no brainer.

What’s new in SUPs The BIC WING Series:The BIC Wing 12.6’ and 11’ models won Outside Magazine’s Gear of the Year Award and they are one of our top sell-ers. The Wing Ace-Tec is bombproof: a molded epoxy board with a thin thermoformed shell makes it more durable than most boards on the market. And yet it’s relatively lightweight at 34 pounds. A displacement hull with a flat midsection makes for a speedy, race worthy ride that cuts through chop. At 30 inches wide and over six inches thick, the Wing Ace-Tec is stable but won’t feel like a dog to seasoned paddlers. In short: a practical, durable, affordable, fun-to-paddle SUP.

BIC Cross-SUP:Shape Evolution bridges the gap between BIC’s traditional Classic Shapes, and Wing Touring/Fitness models. The Cross-SUP series offers superior stability and tracking in a compact shape for all-around, fitness, and Yoga Paddlers.

BIC’s New Platinum SeriesThe Classic Platinum series pairs the legendary durability and performance of their Ace Tec Classic series with a rich, high gloss bronze metallic finish. It also features new attachment points and a softer, more colorful deck pad.

SUPs... Make a Change in Your Life in 2014! By Tina Fetten. Paddle FIT, ACA certified SUP instructor and Werner Paddles ambassador as well as certified yoga instructor. (This is an excerpt from Tina’s article; visit wwwAdirondackPaddlfest.com for the full article.)The physical, mental and spiritual benefits of SUPs have the potential to improve many facets of your life. Here are what I suggest to be the most effective ways to incorporate SUP fitness into your life in 2014.

Just Standing! : For the SUP beginner, simply learning to stand will be a total body workout. I always stress with my beginners that just learning to ground down and stand up in proper form can challenge your muscles. Be sure to con-nect with Mountainman or a reputable SUP coach in your area who is well trained in the skill and safety of SUP.

SUP Yoga: SUP Yoga takes your yoga practice to a higher level. Practicing on the water creates an increased aware-ness of your body, breathing and muscle-to-bone alignment, allowing you to gain the maximum benefits of each pose. The serenity of floating on beautiful, landscaped waterways will enhance your deep breathing, sun salutations and inversions.

SUP Cardio Conditioning: Many fitness enthusiasts feel they haven’t had a workout unless their heart is pumping at full throttle and sweat is pouring off of their bodies. Utilizing your SUP board as your gym floor will do just that, with the added benefit of having nature as your backdrop. Resistance Bands: Simple resistance bands wrapped around the board will elevate your strength training to much higher level. Through the resistance you can tap into and ignite your muscle strength in not only your upper body, but in your core and lower body as your ground for balance. Always keep in mind that whether you sit, kneel, stand, paddle, or workout on a board you are tapping into the many benefits that SUP has to offer. So in 2014 step out of your comfort zone, make a change, and go out there and pad-dle!!!!

Tina Fetten resides in Binghamton where she shares her love of SUP and Yoga in communities all over New York State through Southern Tier Stand Up Paddle Corp. She currently offers SUP, SUP Yoga and SUP cardio with differentiated adap-tive programs to meet each athlete’s needs. [email protected] ,www.facebook.com/SoutherntierSUP, www.South-erntierstanduppaddle.com She proudly represents Werner Paddles as an ambassador of the healthy lifestyle of SUP.
