History of the Chalk Festival

T he Sarasota Chalk Festival, in its sixth season, will celebrate the

theme “Legacy of Valor” from Nov. 13 through Nov. 18, in Burns Square, in down-town Sarasota. Through the rich cultural traditions of street painting and the eyes of the participating artists, the festival will honor veterans, inspire patriotism and em-brace freedom to create the awe-inspiring event this international festival has come to represent.

An impressive 500 artists are scheduled to perform during the six-day festival. The featured artists are the street painters who travel from all over the world. They will cover every inch of South Pineapple Av-enue with oversized masterpieces based on the theme, “Legacy of Valor.” On aver-

age, they labor on their hands and knees for 36 hours using pastel chalk as their medium and the road surface as their canvas.

The cost to bring this artwork to our city, which either naturally fades away or is washed away, is more than $1 million. The founder, Denise Kowal, says, “The real value of the festival is inspiring lasting memories and engagement that enrich lives in our com-munity through a celebration of the creative process.”

The festival attracts more than 200,000 vis-itors who are the pivotal aspect of its success.

“It is the visitor, the observer, before whom the hundreds of individually creative ideas un-fold, generating a synergy among all who are present that shapes the performance,” says-Kowal who coined the festival a “museum in motion.”

Our theme for 2013

This year, the Sarasota Chalk Festival is partnering with the “Legacy of Valor” cam-

paign to honor veterans, inspire patriotism and pass freedom on to others. Through the

campaign, the festival will contribute to new realities for our community to con-nect with veterans and en-

courage everyone to pay it forward — wheth-er through time, talent or treasure.

The veteran theme was first suggested in

early 2011 by the festival’s archives chairman, David Taylor, who is a Vietnam War veteran and recipient of a Purple Heart. Over the next two years, he continued to discuss the theme with Kowal, who struggled with the idea.

“David never gives up on anything and has respect for the freedom of expression and thought,” she says.

Kowal admits she has had to do some soul-searching with this theme.

“Some people want to censor the festival artists and artwork, and I have to remind peo-ple why the USA is different than other coun-tries,” she says. “Because of a veteran, we have freedoms such as freedom of speech, press, religion, assembly and petition. This year’s artwork will have a lot of diversity, just as we have a lot of diversity in our thinking and beliefs.”

History of the festival

Denise Kowal, president of the Burns Square Property Owners Association, founded and sponsored the first Avenida de Colores Burns Square Chalk Festival in November 2007, with 22 artists and 5,000 people attending. At that time, the Children’s Chalk Playground, run by artist Jill Hoffman-Kowal, was the most popular area. Of the 22 participants that year, only three had street-painting experience: ex-perienced street painters Lori Escalera, Kitty Dyble-Thompson and Mike Kasun. These art-ists were all instrumental in the progress and development of the festival.

L eonardo da Vinci created the earliest known definitive example of anamor-

phosis (3-D) of a child’s face in the Codex Atlanticus dating from the 1480s, but it was not until 1984 when Kurt Wenner created the first 3-D on the ground. Starting Wednesday, Nov. 13, in Burns Square, the festival 3-D art-ists will begin creating these anamorphic il-lusions on South Pineapple Avenue, directly on the road surface. The public is encouraged to come and watch the artistic process of de-forming a shape, so that it is recognizable only from a privileged position. Once completed, the oversized masterpieces in illusion become an interactive work of art. Join the Sarasota Chalk Festival as a viewer of these artists who play with the psychology of visual perception.

S tarting Friday morning, please join the “Legacy of Valor” festivities and see why

the Sarasota Chalk artists are the “chalk of the town.” Watch as hundreds of participating artists turn South Pineapple Avenue, in Burns Square, into a “museum in motion.” Each artist is, on average, chalking for three days straight to com-plete a 12-foot-by-12-foot painting.

Participating artists come from almost every U.S. state, and our international artists are travel-ing from Italy, France, Germany, the Netherlands, England, Ireland, Russia, Japan, Spain, Mexico, Brazil, Thailand and India. The festival pays for all the costs of the artists to participate, includ-ing travel. It receives more than 1,000 applica-tions a year from around the world, even though it stopped putting out a call to artists three years

ago. The festival strives to include artists who have the heart and passion, shared with the volunteers, visitors and donors who make the festival the awe-inspiring event everyone has come to love.

Although national and international artists go through an approval process to participate, the festival always finds space for local artists and students, no matter what skill level. So, join the Sarasota Chalk Festival by being a participating artist or by becoming a part of the creative pro-cess, the viewer who witnesses the artists’ evo-lution of turning asphalt into large masterpieces.

T he Avenida de Colores chari-table 501(c)(3) organization

added a vertical program in 2011 that focused mainly on street artists. Just after three years, the program has supported local artists and students and brought renowned street artists to paint in Sarasota. The program is on-going but launches yearly during the Sarasota Chalk Festival. This year, our first vertical art was installed in Oc-tober on the Ice House at 1314 10th St., in preparation for the festival’s first curated art sale and show, “Re-Imagining Sarasota Chalk Artists Art.” Another dozen or so will be painted during the festival on prominent walls scattered throughout Sarasota.

Festival and bring fresh cre-ative ideas, strategy and style to their performances as emerging artists. Those who have been creating pave-ment art for years serve as their mentors. This year, par-ticipating students are able to attend a free class by profes-sional street painter Lorelle Miller from 2 to 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 14, at 529 S. Pineapple Ave. The nonprofit encourages all skill levels,

because it is the act of creat-ing something from nothing that we celebrate.

If you attended previous years and saw the students challenged by working on a rough road, then this year’s surface will be a pleasant surprise for all.

has attended the festival since its inception, in an all-day workshop on street painting for our participating military veteran artists. We have a few spaces available for aspiring street painters or those who want to refine their street-painting skills.

T o inaugurate the Ice House exhibition space, Alfstad & Productions and the Sara-

sota Chalk Festival are collaborating to add a new dimension to how the public perceives street art-ists. Together they are unveiling the show, “Re-Imagining Sarasota Chalk Artists Art,” with an opening gala at 6 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 14.

“Sarasota is going to see the work of these artists in a whole new way,” says Sam Alfstad, of Alfstad & Productions.

The Chalk Festival has debuted many new techniques and technologies in street painting. This show will again set a new pace by moving the art of these fine artists from the sidewalk to the walls of the Ice House. The gallery environ-ment will add a new dimension to the audience’s understanding and enjoyment of their works.

“We believe the show will help art-lovers view and ‘re-imagine’ the work of these multi-talent-ed artists,” founder Denise Kowal says.

The combination of the Sarasota Chalk Fes-tival and the “Re-Imagining” show provides an opportunity to view the work of the world’s finest chalk artists outdoors and then see, experience and purchase their fine artwork in Sarasota’s newest indoor, 8,900-square-foot, multi-pur-pose art exhibition space. C elebrating the “Legacy of Valor,” the Sarasota Chalk Festival nonprofit has put

out a call to military-veteran artists throughout the U.S., seeking professional artists without any street-painting experience. The nonprofit is covering their expenses to attend through your donations at the festival.

Each artist will enjoy a full day of instruction on Thursday with professional street painter Lori Escalera. The class that is open to the public for $150 enrollment will teach the ins and outs of street painting and cover the com-plexities of 3-D and other techniques.

On Friday, Nov. 15, these artists will spend the day shadowing one of the professional art-ists who attends each year and is either a mili-tary veteran themselves or a family member of a veteran.

Then, Saturday, Nov. 16 and Sunday, Nov. 17, the veteran artists will be provided with a square in which to chalk their own painting in the festival.

It is the organization’s hope that the experi-ence will spark a lifelong love of the art form and give them a new skill in which to make a living.

The collaborative chalk drawing is to heal and move energy through the creative spirit, through im-ages, mark-making and hard work, to bridge an overarching creative spirit whose purpose is to help transform the negative into positive.

With a Master’s in Arts and Consciousness, Wagner specializes in visionary art and has an in-depth understanding of the psychology of visual arts, symbolism, mythology, shamanism and storytelling. He creates illustrations, web and

graphic design and has illustrated and written the book, “The Art of Being a Dad.”

Wagner is a digital and traditional artist and teacher. He has worked as a concept artist in the film and game industry, creating art at Pixar for the Disney film “John Carter,” among other films.

He is also an internationally known street painter/chalk-drawing artist. He created the non-profit Drawing on Earth, which inspires art and creativity in youth and communities around the world. Its first event set a Guinness World Re-cord for the largest pavement art in the world. He has created five pieces of art that have been photographed by satellite. Recent clients include Genentech, SpaceX and CBS Interactive.

THOUGHTFUL REFLECTION

I n 2005 the founder of this festival, Denise Kowal, visited the American Cemetery in

Normandy, France. The impact of that visit and the sincere admiration and pride for the Sara-sota National Cemetery became the inspiration behind the “Thoughtful Reflection.”

Join us Saturday, Nov. 16 and Sunday, Nov. 17, to experience this interactive headstone-sculpture exhibit. The center will feature an eternal flame made spe-cifically for the festival.

“Thoughtful Reflection” is a place to think, rejoice and honor those who have served and scarified for our country and are no longer with

us. Our information tents include The Patter-son Foundation, Sarasota Military Academy, Sarasota National Cemetery and the Veteran Affairs Office.

Join the exhibit at 4:30 p.m. Saturday evening for a military ceremony emceed by

Maverik Johnson from 106.5 CTQ radio with brief speeches by dignitaries, music by the Sarasota Military Academy, the Vietnam

Brotherhood Color Guard and the play-ing of “Taps” at sunset. A free dinner

for 500 veterans and their families will follow at 6 p.m. at the Mermaid Fountain, lower Lemon Avenue and

South Pineapple Avenue.

• NO PETS ALLOWED AT PEAK HOURS. Please leave your pets at home during our peak hours from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily.

• ONE-DIRECTION TRAFFIC. A counter-clockwise walking route is requested in the Burns Square area, where the

bulk of the professional artists are working.

• REFRESHMENTS AND FOOD. Inside the festival grounds we will have food and beverages so you never go thirsty or hungry while supporting the festival and veterans we are honoring.

The Sarasota Chalk Festival is a benefit for the Avenida de Colores 501(c)(3) cultural arts nonprofit organization that produces the festi-

val, among other events and outreach programs. The

nonprofit is determined to keep participation in the festival and atten-dance free for all. It can continue this way as long as visitors

who have the ability donate and sponsor the festival so that those less fortunate can share in this experience, too.
