KathrynMarkelFineArtsispleasedtopresentAtlasUh-oh,SarahIrvin’sfirstsoloexhibi;onwiththegallery.Sarah Irvin creates dynamic, rich images that contain an ac;vated freshness while rumina;ng on thestrengthandlimita;onsoflanguageandmemory.HerprocessforherinkseriesreflectstheshiFingnatureofmemory,theevolu;onoflanguageonanindividualandsocietallevel,andhowthedependabilityofbothcan be lost over ;me. The series was ini;ally inspired by her grandfather’s loss of language due toAlzheimer’sdisease.Now,Irvinusesthelimitedlanguageskillsofher18-month-olddaughterasastar;ngpoint,shiFingherfocusfromtheendofourrela;onshipwithwordstothebeginning.Irvin begins with ink and a non-absorbent Yupo paper, wri;ng words and phrases thickly in expressivecursive.OncewriOen, Irvin takes squeegees and destroys thewords, allowing the ink to slip and spreadacrossthepaper,formingnewmarks.Remnantsofthewordssome;mesremainvisible,buttheirmeaningcan’tbedeciphered.Theini;alphrasesarederivedfrompersonalfamilymemories,Irvin’sdaughter’sfirstwords,andconcernsaboutourculture’suseof language.Byobscuringthem,Irvinevokesboththepowerandshortcomingsoflanguage.Sheques;onstheabilityoftheindividualtoaccuratelymakeuseofthesewords,andoursocietytointerpretthemcorrectly,subver;ngtheverytechniquesusedtorecordourlanguagethroughwri;ngandpublishing.Theimmediacyofthefinishedimageevokesanemo;onalsensibility,asifdestroyingthewordshasleFonlythefeelingofthemomentorconcepttheydescribed.SarahIrvinholdsaBAfromUniversityofGeorgiaandanMFAfromGeorgeMasonUniversity(2016).
