Transcript of Sarah Altene's Undergrad Architecture Portfolio
SarahAlteneArchitecture Portfolio l University of Cincinnati
Hello and thank you for taking the time to review my selected works!
I am a University of Cincinnati student graduating in the spring of 2016 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Architecture and a Minor in Business Management. I have had 3 great co-ops and an internship all across the country working on projects ranging from small storefronts to skyscrapers. This has given me a great variety of experience.
I enjoy working in many different modeling and drafting programs as well as learning how to solve problems with them. I enjoy seeing how design can transform a space into something completly new. Upon graduation, I will be searching for a full time position in the Architecture field, and would love to find a company where I can use my talents to the best of my ability.
Thank you again and enjoy!

Co-op Work l Professional Experience
Zurich is changing their current headquarters from a small high rise to a new campus layout in Schaumburg, Illinois. The building features three bars with the top bar cantilevering towards downtown Chicago. Besides offices, the build-ing features a full service cafeteria, green roofs, a large courtyard, and a four story parking garage.
Fall 2014 Programs: Revit, Rhino, Photoshop

First Floor Plan
Many 3D prints were produced for the main courtyard to observe changes in the pavilion, water wall, brick patterns, Facade, and entry. The one pictured is the final model that was shown to the client. This space is very crucial to Zurich since they anticipate to hold many outdoor events in this space other than daily use. It is also located off of the cafeteria so in the warmer months it will be used frequently for lunch and other breaks taken through the day.

Many facade studies were done in the conceptual design phase for the JunAn Tower in Shenzen, China. Thebuilding includes ample office space, and a large shopping center in the first few floors at the base of the tower. All three schemes feature a green glass reveal.

For a client’s prototype, fixtures were placed in different layouts based on the space available. They ranged from small 300 square foot mall locations, to 2500 sq ft corporate stores. The same fixtures were used and different rules were applied based on size. Some stores also required a storefront remodel as well.

School Work l University of CincinnatiB.S. Architecture Class of 2016
The goal of the UC MetroLab is to engage students in a new way through a design build studio. In this semester, we paired with Elementz, a hip-hop studio for middle and high school students looking to express their creativity. Our class showed students what we do in DAAP, in hopes we spark an interest in architecture, or other creative field. We started by doing small design projects, and then used their assistance in designing objects they would use in their space. One of those projects, was an acoustic ceiling since the space is very open and bounces a lot of sound. In their main hangout space, we used 362 felt covered panels to create a undulating surface that absorbed sound. The triangle shape was inspired by a triangular paper folding pattern.

constructionThe building process involved 4 different laser cut panels arranged into a repeating hexagon shape. That hexagon was repeated 17 times with different voids and different heights. The panels were laser cut chip board wrapped in felt. The panels were attached by tabs to create a pan shape. From there, the pans were grommeted together to make the final shape. The hexagons were attached to the concrete ceiling using tapcon screws, tie-down rings, and fishing line to make the ceiling appear to float.

05 Center for Biodiversity and Forestry Research
An existing park in the Mt. Airy neighborhood of Cincinnati, Ohio was the chosen site for the center for biodiversity and forestry research. The center is meant to make as little impact on the site as possible and provide a good environment for researchers to get immersed in their work. The structure also features a parallel tensile membrane roof. The program contains labs, instructional spaces, an auditorium and a residential area for long term research.

TREE LINE
On this particular site, the trees provide a distinct line between forrest and medow. It is possible to build through this line, but it is still important to know the distinction. If building over this line is considered, tree damage needs to be considered.

07 Row HouseWinter 2015 Programs: AutoCAD, Photoshop, IllustratorOn a 25’ x 135’ site in Covington, Kentucky, a house was to be designed for musician Shara Worden and her family. The site is in a prime location right on the Ohio river overlooking downtown Cincinnati. With the design having to be very narrow and directly between two other Row Houses, daylighting was explored in depth to fully light the house.
