What Is The Internet Of Things (Iot)?Internet of Things definition: The vast network of devices connected to the Internet, including smart phones and tablets and almost anything with a sensor on it – cars, machines in production plants, jet engines, oil drills, wearable devices, and more. These “things” collect and exchange data.

IoT – and the machine-to-machine (M2M) technology behind it – are bringing a kind of “super visibility” to nearly every industry. Imagine utilities and telcos that can predict and prevent service outages, airlines that can remotely monitor and optimize plane performance, and healthcare organizations that can base treatment on real-time genome analysis. The business possibilities are endless.

The Outcomes Customers Want

• Lower cost • Increased uptime • Improve turnarounds

• New revenue • Reduce waste • Faster deliveries

No one has more knowledge and experience in business processes, while giving our customers a 360° view of their entire business operation. The Internet of Things (IoT) has the potential to drive the largest segment of growth in new business value with the right solution infrastructure. SAP can help you know where opportunities exists, evolve your business processes to take action, and create new business value and ecosystem advantages.

Introduction to the SAP Leonardo Innovation Portfolio

SAP Leonardo connects things with people and processes

Business and IT leaders across industries are constantly searching for new and innovative ways to service and delight customers like no other competitor. With emerging smart assets that can be always-on, industries see a tremendous possibility to transform operational scenarios and reimagine their business models.

The massive numbers of connected things and the explosion of data generated by connected devices (“Things”) will change the way we do business forever. The journey a company takes to get from “Things to Outcomes” is becoming the catalyst for digitization. IoT is not necessarily new to most companies. However, most are collecting and storing the data and may also have the ability to visualize it. With SAP Leonardo, our endeavor is to provide an innovative solution portfolio that enables companies to not only realize digital transformation of existing end-to-end business processes, but also enable them to evolve new business models to run digitally.

SAP provides a highly innovative IoT portfolio which extends the digital core with adaptive applications, big data applications and connectivity to enable:

• New business processes

• New business models

• New work environments

The Internet of Things is on top of the agenda for most companies. While technology has existed for several decades, it was limited to operational use. The evolution of connectivity, Big Data management, analytics, and cloud technology is enabling us to converge these operational and information technologies to make machines smarter and drive end-to-end digital transformation.

Initially, IoT applications were limited for operational activities on shop floor and data was not leveraged for enterprise use. With the evolution of Industry 4.0 and industrial Internet, customers are looking to leverage this Big Data and develop responsive and intelligent applications for line-of-business and industry-specific end-to-end processes.

“ Ever since we learned about the data mining approach to improve master-data quality proposed by SAP’s Data Science organization, it has become a substantial component of all our data quality projects.”

— Rob Jansen, Manager of Grid Information, Alliander N.V.

Objectives• Improve data quality in the asset register, a central repository for all assets – such as gas pipes and

electrical cables – used across the grid • Reduce maintenance costs and regulatory risks by completing missing technical data, such as material

or construction year, for all assets with high accuracy• Move away from purely rule-based solutions for managing the quality of asset data that are time-

consuming, unable to detect unknown patterns, and require tremendous expert involvement

Why SAP• Combination of internal business knowledge with unparalleled data mining expertise from SAP to

rapidly improve data quality• SAP’s Data Science organization uses data mining and R programming techniques – a language for

statistical analysis – to identify patterns, extract regularities from the data itself, and complete missing asset data automatically

Benefits• Faster improvement in data quality• Lower project costs as well as significantly less effort and fewer resources for data quality management• No penalties by satisfying regulatory requirements• Better, more efficient planning for asset investments

City of Buenos AiresGobierno de la Ciudad Autónoma de Buenos Aires: Staying Dry with Help from SAP® SolutionsFounded in 1580 at the mouth of the Rio Plata, Buenos Aires is subject to annual torrential rains. Given its aging infrastructure and dense population, flooding has historically been an issue. Clogged storm drains have slowed down the city, caused property damage, and even resulted in lost lives over the years. But recently, after three days of torrential rainfall, the city did not experience any flooding at all.

Using the SAP HANA® platform to analyze real-time sensor data from storm drains and SAP® Mobile Platform to ensure streets and drains are clear, the City of Buenos Aires is well prepared to mitigate risks caused by heavy rains. It is using SAP solutions to maintain its infrastructure, manage complex contractor and supplier relationships, elevate its services, and improve lives.

RocheStopping Diabetes in Its Tracks with Connected Care

Original Asset

Health & EducationHealth and education are essential to well-being and sustainable development. Healthcare technology is changing our world thanks to innovative pioneers like Roche Diagnostics. For example, with connected care, the quality and results of medical treatments are drastically improving – especially for preventable lifestyle diseases like type II diabetes. It’s creating stronger relationships between doctors and patients, motivating people to take charge of their health, and giving doctors real insights into patient’s lifestyles that they never had before.

• Connected care will decrease healthcare costs by 40% in the future • 50% more deaths by diabetes predicted in the next 10 years • Worldwide, ~350 million people have diabetes

Customer Snapshot: Success Strategy Managing Chronic Illness Anywhere 24/7What if these insights could prevent most chronic illnesses now and into the future?

The ChallengeTo Age Gracefully, Without Chronic IllnessWith growing longevity comes new health challenges for millions of people who live with chronic medical conditions. In fact, soaring levels of chronic illnesses are the leading cause of deaths, and represent one of the greatest social, economic and political transformations of our time.

The challenge is for effective prevention and treatment of illnesses on a grand scale, in ways that will empower people to be proactive with their healthcare. Take Roche’s newest live pilot in Germany, which aims to change the future of the first-world lifestyle disease, type II diabetes. For all the millions that do have type II diabetes, there are millions of people who are pre-diabetic and in danger of this diagnosis.

• Average person’s lifespan: now 20 years longer

• By 2050: 2 Billion people will be over 60

TESTIMONIAL VIDEO Roche Diabetes Care and SAP create App for personalized health management

Enter SAPWhere There’s a Mobile App, There’s a PreventionCalled Accu-ChekView, Roche’s new package combines a blood glucose monitor, a wearable fitness tracker, and an App developed by SAP that are integrated together. Specifically targeted to meet the individual needs of patients and doctors, now a patient’s vital signs and blood sugar level can be watched in relation to their physical activity level, in real-time. The doctor can monitor the patient remotely, and the patient can communicate with the doctor’s office.

Better BusinessThe Doctor in the Palm of Your Hand In order to perform such seeming magic, it was critical to have the right solution for this program. Using SAP Connected Health on the HANA Cloud Platform, all the needed data is securely gathered, stored and processed – giving the doctor and patient access to immediate information and feedback.

Better Business: BenefitsPatients Get Moving When the Doctor is WatchingConnecting closely with the doctor like this creates a stronger relationship, having a psychological effect that is supportive and empowering for patients. For instance, little mistakes and slip-ups in lifestyle can be caught quickly because the app will red flag the issue, and the doctor and patient can work on solutions together. If a patient is not being active enough, the app is a good support tool to motivate them to get back on track.

Prediabetic people can now conceivably reverse symptoms and live normal, healthy life. And doctors are now learning more about what causes chronic illnesses much faster, with this “bird’s eye view” of a patient’s life in action.

Journey AheadChanging Medical Care Forever with Mobile TechnologyThese powerful new innovations in connected care are promising to allow doctors to get deeper with their patients’ personal treatment plans, and change the way doctors treat patients in multitudes of ways. Saving lives and curing diseases can be their focus, one individual patient at a time.

Company Objectives

Sailing Team Germany – an initiative from sailors for sailorsGermany was a major force in the world’s sailing community in the 1980s; but after that, several other countries eclipsed it. Some German sailors, including former Olympians, recently decided to change this. Noting that German sailors and crews were essentially on their own to prepare for races, they formed an initiative called Sailing Team Germany to provide the support needed for Germany and its best sailors to rise again to the highest levels of the Olympic sport of sailing.

Sailing is complex, and winning strategies must take into account a myriad of conditions such as wind, wind shifts, water currents, boat and crew specifics, and knowledge of the course and the competition. Every race offers lessons that can enhance future performance, but the variables involved can be daunting. Sailing Team Germany wanted a way to record all the variables that factor in to performance and then analyze this data for important insights. This way, sailors could review each race or training session in detail using precise GPS tracking and other data, rather than relying on memory or “feel.”

Competitive sailing also faces another challenge. Traditionally, it has been difficult for people to understand what is going on far offshore on the race course, and as a result, this exciting sport is underappreciated. Announcers and commentators usually could not help much because they too lacked visibility into race specifics. To motivate governments, corporations, and other sponsors in Germany to provide funds, Sailing Team Germany wanted to make sailing more understandable for spectators on shore, more easily presented by commentators in the studio, and ultimately more popular.

ResolutionTeaming with SAP for sailors and fans alikeSailing Team Germany knew that to achieve its ambitious goals, it needed help for its challenges from providers of solutions, and the group approached many world-class German companies to discuss the possibility of partnering. “SAP was at the top of our list,” says Oliver Schwall, CEO of Sailing Team Germany and a former world champion. “We knew that technology was a key factor if we wanted to be successful and that SAP is a technological leader. After a couple of meetings, it was clear that there is a lot of technology SAP can deliver to help our sailors win.”

SAP assigned a development team to work with Sailing Team Germany. They equipped the team’s boats with GPS devices and sensors to collect data on wind speed and direction, ocean currents, and other factors. They then developed and deployed SAP Sailing Analytics software to monitor these devices as well as other sensors around a course, using SAP BusinessObjects™ business intelligence solutions and SAP HANA® Cloud Platform to deliver and analyze this data for insights into performance improvements. Sailing Team Germany is finding that, with the help of SAP Sailing Analytics, every race’s data is a treasure trove of insights for excelling in the next race. With push-button ease, they can test hypotheses and perform “what if” analyses.

The software also provides detailed insights into the prestart phase of races, where a boat can win or lose before the starting gun is even fired. Real-time data can be displayed on a leaderboard to indicate relative advantages of one boat over another for the benefit of racers and spectators alike.

Business Transformation Simplifying sailing’s many complexitiesSAP and Sailing Team Germany codeveloped another application called the training diary to track how sailors are spending their time, so they can make adjustments if necessary. Together, they also developed an application to better understand how currents behave in specific locales such as the sites of future Olympic Games. SAP also provided its standard SAP Business ByDesign solution, which has proven ideal for the group’s needs in finance, accounting, and other backbone areas.

The partnership with SAP has helped not just with winning races but with the people challenges as well. To make sailing easier to understand and more enjoyable for fans, Sailing Team Germany is using SAP Sailing Analytics to combine real-time audio and video with information about the race, contender backgrounds, performance, and more. Up-to-the moment, highly detailed race data is also helping announcers make more engaging presentations.

“To get the public really into sailing, we knew we had to cut through all of the sport’s complexity,” says Marcus Baur, Head of Technology for Sailing Team Germany and a two-time Olympic contender. “Run Simple is not just a motto around SAP – it’s fundamentally what SAP does. Good sailors make sailing simple, and good software makes it simpler for them to do so.”

Future Plans All eyes on the next OlympicsEverything Sailing Team Germany does is targeted toward the next Olympic Games and Paralympics. Using SAP Sailing Analytics, team members are closely analyzing expected wind and current conditions on-site and using the software’s “strategy simulator” functionality to calculate optimal courses for various combinations of conditions. They also hope and expect that SAP Sailing Analytics will be used at the Olympics for broadcasting the races in real time and making them more interesting for viewers.

“SAP Sailing Analytics is a real game changer in this sport. I love it. It takes the whole game to a new level,” says Baur in conclusion. “SAP has provided so much as a partner, much more than we had hoped for. They’re an integral part of our team and they want us to win as much as we do.”

“ One fantastic takeaway of SAP Sailing Analytics is that even people who have no big affinity or background in sailing can understand what is going on.”

— Oliver Schwall, CEO, Sailing Team Germany

It is a business improvement endeavor between ULA and key suppliers, including SAP. ULA collaborates with partners to determine how to improve processes using only the appropriate tools necessary to get the highest return.

The ChallengeOne View, from the Drawing Board to the Launch PadAt times, ULA had as many as 15 different operating systems dedicated to overlapping processes, such as rocket design, testing, and launch. Multiple systems created unnecessary costs and unwanted confusion among workers at offices, factories, and launch sites in different locations. To improve collaboration and transparency during vital activities that directly influence mission success, ULA wanted to improve data sharing and streamline manufacturing processes.

Enter SAPExtending a Partnership of TrustULA leadership already understood the value of SAP solutions, having implemented SAP ERP for finance and human relations. The alliance also worked closely with SAP Custom Development to create a new graphical user interface for simultaneously viewing multiple test plans. When ULA evaluated the SAP Complex Assembly Manufacturing solution, they were pleased to discover how easily data flowed between systems ranging from manufacturing to finance.

Enter SAP: The SAP ExperienceYet Another Successful LaunchJust as they do with their own rocket launches, ULA expected the launch of SAP Complex Assembly Manufacturing to be executed flawlessly. SAP provided Perfect Product Delivery, meaning the new system was implemented without interrupting normal business operations.

Better BusinessSimplicity Means Speed and Speed is EverythingBy implementing a system that integrates with other environments, ULA is able to simplify several dimensions of what are commonly very technical and complex operations. Even processes as common as closing books have the potential to accelerate ULA’s launch schedules. Improved visibility into building and testing rockets means safety and reliability can be maintained cost-effectively.

Better Business: Benefits One Team, One System The standardization of data and its synthesis into a single system helps unite ULA’s employees like never before. Gone are siloed processes that required manual workarounds or caused project delays because of system incompatibility. Because the alliance’s SAP systems all communicate effortlessly with each other, it helps promote the sense of teamwork across workgroups and geographies

Better Business: Run SimpleSupporting Manufacturing and Launch OperationsBetween the custom GUI and the implementation of SAP Complex Assembly Manufacturing, ULA is now better able to provide multifaceted support to their rocket business, starting with project and component design all the way through to successful launches of valuable payloads into orbit and interplanetary journeys.

Journey Ahead Defining and Implementing the Future SAP solutions are now in place to help ULA build the next generation of rockets to support science, industry, and life on Earth. The united team of ULA and the unified technology of SAP are also working on the next generation of human space flight—the new ULA Delta IV Heavy Rocket, which is being developed to support NASA’s Orion spacecraft.
