SAP HU - SAP Handling Unit Management
(HUM)
The SAP HU is used for tracking the handling units used by the materials. Some
common handling units are packagings materials like cartons, pallets etc.
In the SAP system, the handling unit (HU) expands on the shipping unit. Handling units
can be nested and you can also create ne handling units !rom se"eral handling units as
o!ten as you like. At the material item le"el, HUs contain the complete material
identi!ication, the #uantity, and, in the case o! serial numbers, the respecti"e ob$ect list.
Handling units ha"e uni#ue,
scannable identi!ication numbers that can be de"eloped according to standards such as
%A& ' or SS**.
Handling units contain all in"entory management in!ormation o! the materials they
contain that are maintained in In"entory +anagement. here are also status messages
that you can call up at any time that indicate hether a handling unit is only planned or
i! the ship-to party has been noti!ied o! the arri"al o! this handling unit, or hether it is
in the arehouse or has already been posted to goods issue. he integrated history
!unction also records each business process in
the li!e cycle o! each handling unit, meaning that you can track the handling units path
and de"elopment at any time.

In HU-managed storage locations, all goods mo"ements are executed through the
speci!ication o! the respecti"e HUs, and In"entory +anagement is per!ormed through
the handling units. I! you are orking ithout HU-managed storage locations, you can
ork ith handling units (ithout stock in!ormation) as be!ore in the deli"ery and in the
shipment.
In HU-managed storage locations, materials can be managed in HUs only. +ixed stock
made up o! packed and non-packed materials ithin the same storage location are not
supported. HUs can also be managed in interim storage types. Unpacking a material
!rom a HU means that the stock o! the material is posted to a storage location that is not
HU-managed.
I! you call up normal material mo"ements in connection ith an HU-managed storage
location, a deli"ery is created, rather than a direct material posting, hich has been the
procedure up to no.
Please note that i! you ant to use 4'' to mo"e the material already in stock, but in a
non HU+ Storage 1ocation and you ant to trans!er those materials into a HU+
Storage 1ocation 456. I! this is the case you can use the transaction VLMOV ith the
destination plant and storage location. 7e!ore that you ha"e to create the HU ith the
transaction code HU!" Storage location0 here the material is and the status0 in stock.

Handling units are uni#ue at client le"el in at least one system. Using an indicator at
client le"el, you can control hether you are going to ork ith the HU !unctions. Since
the handling unit is a physical unit, the central logistics processes are controlled through
the input o! the handling unit identi!ication. hese processes include putaay, picking,
and stock trans!ers, as ell as goods receipts and goods issues.
A handling units mobility can be limited i! #uality checks are acti"e. *hanges in the
stock category caused by a #uality inspection are made using a posting change in the
handling unit.
here is also a report a"ailable that you can use to !ind and display handling units using
di!!erent selection criteria such as material, packing instruction, or storage location.
Although the handling unit is basically a unit that remains constant in the system, you
can change it by repacking the materials it contains. All the packing !unctions, such as
packing, repacking, and unpacking, are completely supported by the handling unit
!unctionality. In this ay, handling units can be created in production, during goods
receipt, or in the packing areas o! the arehouse. I! you ha"e automatic packing, the
handling unit is created !rom the packaging proposals de!ined in the system (!rom the
packing instructions, !or example).
