LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR Happy New year! Our hope is that you enjoyed the festive season. The start of a new year is always an exciting time as we prepare for the opportunities and challenges facing our Home.

We at Sanyu Babies’ Home want to take this opportunity to thank all of you who support our ministry. Your prayers, encouragement and donations make a monumental difference in the lives of the children in our care. We cannot thank you enough our dear friends who have continuously supported the ongoing rehabilitation of Sanyu Babies’ Home. At the closure of 2014, we shared with you the urgent need to raise UGX 450 million to enable us to construct a strong and defensible perimeter wall and make essential renovations to the living facilities for the children. Through the Namirembe Diocese Bishop’s Appeal Fund, a fundraising marathon was organized on 8th August, 2015 through which many of you generously contributed to the cause. I am therefore pleased to inform you that one of the major milestones for the year 2017 was the construction of the security measures boundary wall. We give the glory to God.

Here, I would like to convey a message of appreciation to our patron The Rt. Rev. Wilbeforce Kityo Luwalira- Bishop of Namirembe Diocese, our Board of Governors and the dedicated and hardworking staff. Deuteronomy 15:10 “Be sure to give to them without any hesitation. When you do this, the LORD your God will bless you in everything you work for and set out to do.

Please continue to remember the Sanyu babies as we walk through 2018, not forgetting the Bible scripture in Luke 12:35 “Be dressed ready for service and keep your lamps burning,”

Barbara Nankya Mutagubya – Director HELLOS AND GOODBYES In the past three months, changes involved 8 children, 5 were re-united with families and 2 were fostered.

Closing Out 2017 with Thanksgiving, Joy & Celebration On the 15th of December, Sanyu Babies’ Home ended the year with a celebration. We celebrated all that the Lord had done in 2017. It was a day full of thanksgiving, joy, and celebration of the birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ. Many guests were on hand to celebrate with us including; the Bishop of Namirembe Diocese- The Rt. Rev. Wilberforce Kityo Luwalira, the Dean of St. Paul’s Cathedral Namirembe – The Very Rev. Canon Benon Kityo, The Archdeacon of Nateete Ven. G.B.K Buwembo, The Namirembe Diocesan Mission and Evangelism Secretary- Rev. Samuel Muwonge, Rev. Tendo Agnes from Makindye, Board members, Friends of Sanyu Babies’ Home, Volunteers and Donors. It was a packed day with so much to be thankful for and many things to celebrate. We began the day with the commissioning of our new perimeter wall/fence by the Bishop. We have been praying for this wall renovation as well as the much needed renovations to the babies’ home for a while. It was such sweet time of seeing the Lord’s blessings through all of those that gave. We know that without you we would have not seen this dream come true for a very long time, so thank you for believing in the work of Sanyu. The Bishop also spent time baptizing some of our precious children. These included;

1. Angella Nabaweesi 2. Marcus Talemwa 3. Ezekiel Mbuga 4. Elijah Kisakye 5. Eloy Kisame

This is always such a memorable time as we thank God for the lives of these sweet children and commit to do our part to raise them as children who love Jesus. The day would not have been complete without celebrating the birth of Jesus, our Savior. We spent time thanking Him, ate a special lunch complete with cake and even celebrated with some dancing. During this time, we also recognized our staff for all of their hard work this year. This full day would not have been possible without so many. Thank you to those who have contributed to every part. To those that gave towards the wall and renovations, thank you for thinking of our children and making their safety and care a priority. To those whose contributions made it possible for us to have such a day of celebration, thank you for joining us in making the day so special. Below are some of the pictures of the celebration.

2017 Employee of the Year

Congratulations Robert! All of Sanyu’s employees work very hard and make the decision of the Employee of the Year a difficult one. Awarded during our celebration on the 15th of December this year’s recipient is no exception to the hard work that continually keeps Sanyu a great place to be. Robert began his journey at Sanyu in August of 2002. When he started, his responsibilities were strictly to keep the compound clean. Now, 15 years later, he is still responsible for keeping things clean but also takes care of making sure the compound has water, electric and wood chopped. He’s also pretty good at running errands quickly in the area. When Robert is off duty, he enjoys watching gospel music and preaching on television. It overflows into his daily life as he also enjoys preaching the gospel and letting others know about God. Robert’s favorite thing about being at Sanyu is serving the babies’ home. He takes joy in completing all of his duties, making sure that his responsibilities are taken care of and ensuring the children are safe. Robert says that he was completely caught by surprise when he heard that he was the recipient. But he didn’t skip a beat when giving his speech. He spent that time encouraging people that were excited for

him saying, “Today is mine, next year is yours. Believe God, be patient and be a good worker all of the time.” And true to who Robert is, he wanted to share some words of encouragement for those reading. “Always fear god, because the fear of God is the beginning of wisdom. And with God all things are possible.” Thank you Robert for your hard work and encouragement! You make Sanyu a better place!

PROPOSED SBH EXTENSION PROJECT

We plan to develop part of Sanyu Babies’ Home prime land into a mixed- use commercial development with shops and offices and a small guest house to start generating an income of our own and therefore enable us to be self-sustaining. We are desperately looking for funds to finance the extension project that will mean so much to the babies in our care. So we really want to encourage friends of Sanyu Babies’ Home and every one out there to help us with whatever you can so we can have the extension project done. The estimated cost for the project is USD 3,090,264.95 so we really hope you can help us with any amount.

Aston Fields Middle School supports Sanyu Babies’ Home Aston Fields Middle School, Bromsgrove, UK has been supporting Sanyu Babies Home for many years. With their teacher, Miss Rachael Bratton, leading the fundraising event the children at AFM’s learn about the children and how they can help during a school assembly. From there they are then given the opportunity to raise money at their Cash Scrambles event doing whatever they want. The children can be as imaginative as they like in how they raise money. This years’ Cash Scrambles was the 10th event AFM’s children have taken part in and it was a huge success! On Friday 17thNovember the annual fundraising day took place. This year’s event took place over the afternoon and yet again the pupils surpassed themselves. The staff were simply amazed at the entrepreneurial skills of their pupils. There were traditional favourites such as cake sales and tombola’s alongside skilful games, fortune telling and a new favourite, homemade slime!

There was plenty of choices to encourage pupils and staff to part with their money and hopefully win a prize! Thankfully, due to the generosity of the parent, carers and friends of AFMS plus and the hard work and ingenuity of the pupils, it was an enormous success.

Sanyu Babies’ Home: Through the Eyes of a Volunteer - Sadie Rosado Before coming to Africa, I was unsure of why I felt called here. After first landing in South Africa, I questioned whether I made the right choice of making this journey. I didn't know what to expect at Sanyu Babies’ Home. I knew I'd be with kids; changing dirty diapers, snuggling them, and feeding them. It's so much more than that, though. It's not simply caring for the children; it's bonding with them, showing them love and just being with them. Before leaving Las Vegas (where my group and I started in a missions school called Youth with a Mission), someone told me that God might know that being with babies would make me come alive. It has! I’ve felt so much joy around these children. Even getting them dressed and off to bed can be a joy filled experience. I remember staring at one baby’s face and seeing Jesus. I felt His joy. God knew I needed Sanyu. That's not to say it hasn’t been challenging at times. Between trying to feed five kids at once, changing dirty diapers, and having snot rubbed onto your shirt, it's a lot of work. But it's oh so worth it. In everything you do, there is opportunity to show love to the kids. When drying them off after their showers, I try to make it a little fun by covering their heads and making funny noises, and I try to smile at each of them. I don't think it takes very much work to show each child that they're seen and cared about. Today, I gave one of the children a kiss on the forehead before he went off to his nap, then another boy shouted “me next”, then another. Before I knew it, I was running around the room giving goodnight forehead kisses to the children while they all yelled “me next” and held their arms out to me. They just want to feel included and loved, and I hope that by being here, I've been able to fulfill that desire. As for the mamas, they are some of the most hard working group of women I have met in my life. I'm here for a short time, but this is their life, in a sense. They are here working constantly. They work with the kids all day, making sure they're fed, clothed in clean

clothes, and bathed. They even take turns spending the night to feed the little babies. They've given so much of themselves to Sanyu, that nothing but Jesus’ love has to be the reason. I will miss this place so much when I'm gone. I'll miss the kids, I'll miss the mamas, and I'll miss what Jesus has done in my heart here. I won't ever forget Sanyu.

Volunteer Report: Janice Smith Well the time has come for me to say goodbye again, after being here at Sanyu Babies’ Home for the past 7 and a half months. While I have been here, it has been so wonderful to see the progress the babies make. From rolling to sitting, next comes crawling and then walking. I love watching the little ones walking. They all seem to have a different style. 3 notable ones who have come while I have been here are….. Eloy, who came in as a new born weighing just 1.5kg. He was so very tiny. Marcus 4 to 6 months old; weighing only 3.5 kgs. I know you should not have favorites but he is one of mine, he is so cute. Ezekiel, about 2 years old who came in very malnourished. He is coming along nicely but is still quite thin. Since being here he has learnt to crawl and is now walking. Thank you to the staff for being so friendly. A special thank you to Joel for making sure we are well fed while we are here. Also thank you to the nurses who look

after us if we are not feeling well. Last but not the least, thank you to the administration team who keep everything running smoothly. God bless you all. Keep up the good work.
