Finis Terrae University is a non-profit private Chilean university inspired by the Catholic faith. It enjoys great prestige among the institutions of higher education in our nation.

We have developed gradually and consistently, but what makes us most proud is the faithfulness to our ideals, which have remained unchanged over time. We aspire to form top professionals who will, in addition to developing their vocation, contribute to building a more prosperous country and a more just society. We endeavor to give students an integral formation that includes great academic precision and high ethical standards in a framework of respect for diversity.

As part of its consolidation plan, Finis Terrae University signed an Association Agreement with the Legion of Christ in 1999. This has resulted in a significant progress in the infrastructure, development and scope of the University and as well as the creation of new programs.

The University is in compliance with all requirements in Chilean laws and has been accredited by the National Accreditation Commission in the areas of institutional management, undergraduate teaching, and relationship with the environment. That accreditation is in effect from November 2010 to November 2015.

In our ongoing search for excellence, we have implanted modern programs of study and as you will see in this brochure, a formative model that is in line with the demands of today’s world. We know that the future is challenging and we are confronting it carefully and creatively.

FINIS TERRAE UNIVERSITY

THE MISSION OF FINIS TERRAE UNIVERSITY Our mission is to form people integrally so that they have an ample knowledge of their field of specialization and the skills and competencies, creativity and reflexive spirit through which they will be able to contribute to the development of society both in the nation and abroad, based on the values of the Western Christian culture.

The values behind the Finis Terrae Seal are individual responsibility, tolerance and an interest in public affairs.

FIGURESOne of our main characteristics is providing a personalized education in which students and professors are closely engaged.

4,200 undergraduate students.

1,000 post-graduate students.

1,000 professors.

In our Educational Model, the student becomes the main actor in his formation and develops a passion for learning to learn, critical thought, analytical capacity and effective communication of his ideas. Our goals are to encourage and form leadership ability, cognitive and creative skills, complex and interrelated thought and interdisciplinary collaborative work. The curriculum is designed on that basis.

EDUCATIONAL MODEL

Providing an integral formation is a seal that sets Finis Terrae apart. We believe that creativity is an across-the-board value in the education that we impart. We at Finis Terrae seek not only for artists to be creative, but also physicians, attorneys, journalists and business engineers. We are convinced that an ample cultural and humanistic base will give our graduates a broader view of the world that will enable them to make valuable contributions and provide new solutions, regardless of the professional ambit in which they work.

We have therefore implemented a new minor’s program starting in 2012. All students at the university will be able to earn a minor, according to their interests, in any of the 8 areas of study offered: Communications, Contemporary History, Literature, Performing Arts, Visual Arts, Social Action, Philosophy and Bioethics.

EXTENSION AND RESEARCH

The University has historically stood out for its attractive and permanent extension agenda focused on its students, former students, professionals and the community at large. Year to year we hold numerous seminars on contingent issues of public interest and we invite prominent international figures to impart workshops and conferences.

In addition, we hold permanent art exhibits and stage plays in our own Exposition Room and two modern theaters, both a full part of the Chilean cultural circuit.

In 2010, Roberto Ampuero, the well-known Chilean writer and current ambassador to Mexico, became a visiting professor at the University. At the same time, we created the Ampuero Chair, which is held annually and through which Finis Terrae seeks to attain several objectives: to enrich the integral formation of its students, simulate narrative and creative writing internally and externally, and create a space for reflection on cultural and international policy in the company of international and national figures, emphasizing Latin America in particular.

The 21st Century Chair, which is led by Marco Antonio de la Parra, psychiatrist, playwright and director of the Finis Terrae School of Drama, is a peerless space for reflection and dialogue involving prominent actors in the arts, sciences, politics, Chilean and foreign professionals who are pushing the boundaries of knowledge.

The Monetary Club, created in 1992, today enjoys wide prestige in Chile as an instance for analysis of economic issues. It is known for the quality of its speakers: government ministers, authorities in the area, important businessmen and renowned specialists and academicians. These conferences make an important contribution to economic debate and are normally widely covered in the press.

The Center for Research and Documentation of the History of Contemporary Chile, CIDOC, is a depositary of unpublished material on our recent history and is one of the hubs around which the research of Finis Terrae University is articulated.

The Research and Publications Office divides its activity into two grand spheres of action: the publication of books and magazines under the Ediciones Finis Terrae seal and the development and articulation of research initiatives of the schools, departments and centers comprising our University.

In fact, it holds an in-house Research Funding Contest annually to encourage research at the different schools and departments of the University.

The Bioethics Institute analyzes and rationally guides the serious moral conflicts involving biomedicine and its connection to the ambit of the Law and Human Sciences.

The School of Faith Institute collaborates with the evangelizing mission of the Catholic Church through the formation of educators of the faith. It creates academic and research programs and promotes ecclesiastic teaching.

The Center for Study and Research on the Family (CEIF) has conducted interesting sociological studies that contribute to a better understanding of the institution of the family in Chile. It provides data for the development of better public policies.
