District Governor Pays a Visit

District Governor, Carl Kruse’s visited the

Santee Lakeside Rotary Club on Thursday, July 25 to share his vision for the District. Governor Kruse urged Rotarians to be torchbearers for Rotary, tying his theme to his experience as a three-time torch bearer for the Olympics and challenged Rotarians to

ignite their passion for Rotary. Two special recognitions were awarded to members of the Santee-Lakeside Rotary. The first -- the Energizer Award and the

second -- the Torchbearer Award.

The Energizers Award, presented in recognition of unselfish devotion to the Object of Rotary, resolute commitment to the missions of Rotary International and The Rotary Foundation, and dedicated service and energy as Club President for Rotary year 2013-14. Governor Kruse presented this award to Club President, Jim Peasley. The Torchbearer Award, presented in recognition of demonstrated passion to “light the path of Rotary” through dedication to the Object of Rotary and enthusiasm to use the power of Rotary to Engage Rotary and Change Lives was given to Immediate Past President, Augie Caires.

On the Polio Front

In a statement issued by the World Health Organization, world leaders and individual philanthropists backed the plan by the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) by pledging almost three-quarters of the funds up front. The Plan utilizes new knowledge about the polio viruses, new technologies and new tactics to reach the most vulnerable communities. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is funding $1.8 billion - a third of

the total cost of the GPEI’s six-year budget. Another $335 million was promised by seven-strong group of other philanthropists, including Tahir Foundation, Bloomberg Philanthropies and Carlos Slim Foundation.

Multiple government donors - among them Britain, Germany, Norway, Pakistan and Nigeria - also made pledges, bringing the total promised so far for the plan to just over $4 billion. A 2010 analysis found that if polio transmission were to be stopped by 2015, the net benefit

from reduced treatment costs and productivity gains would be $40 billion to $50 billion by 2035.

Leadership Development Academy “LDA” Class of 2014

will begin this September.

Registration is now open. LDA is an eight-month interactive

study course for Rotarians of all ages. Learn the how’s and

New Website Vendor ClubRunner!

ClubRunner is a very robust platform that allows automatic synchronization of data with Rotary International. This is a huge benefit

for all Rotarians, and will mean that we are not duplicating entries for membership or attendance information. ClubRunner allows for individual usernames and passwords (which increases security of private data), and will help streamline input and maintenance of individual Club member data. The ClubRunner system helps improve communication through a special email message center, and an improved District Grants module, streamlined event registration, etc. It also offers photo albums,

attendance manager and more. Rotarian, Sandy Pugliese has agreed to be our Club’s webmaster and learn this new tool. The November District Conference will feature a workshop on ClubRunner….don’t miss out. Make sure you register!

For the 2013-2014 Rotary year, I am very humbled and grateful to all

the members of the Santee-Lakeside Rotary Club in your confidence in me to be your club president. As you all know I am a relatively new to Rotary and, of course, have a lot to learn. Since I have become a member of the club I have received much help, assistance, and advice and I know that all of the members will support me in our efforts to make the 2013-2014 year at least as great as the past year lead by

Augie Caries. As our past president has indicated, our club faced several formidable challenges this last year. These challenges must be addressed this Rotary year by all of us. For our club to grow and become more vibrant, we must bring in new members as I believe is our club’s number one priority. We should also complete a needs assessment of our community to understand how our club can help our local community, which is something that I would like to personally accomplish. We should increase our giving in the Every Rotarian Every Year Program. We will continue to build on our past successes to make our Concert at the Lakes a premier fundraising event so that we can adequately fund our youth and community programs. We must

work together and revisit our Strategic Plan to establish achievable goals consistent with the club member’s vision of the future. Working effectively together and committing our resources and time we can make all of this happen.

As stated above, I believe that our first priority is to increase

membership. The club must develop a Membership Plan, a brief document that provides the foundation for marketing the club to grow membership. The Plan needs to identify prospective members in Lakeside and Santee and outline the benefits of becoming a Rotarian, etc.

Prospective members include community and business leaders and professionals who can develop into outstanding Rotarians. If each member of the club would bring as least one special guest to at least one weekly meeting with the hopes of that guest joining our club, that effort could reap rewards to grow membership. That is just one idea

and I am sure that our club has others to increase membership as well. I know that a public relations effort or plan that is implemented will bring enhanced visibility to our club and spark interest of the people in our two communities to join in our efforts to provide service to those

in our community that need help. We should use all of the tools, resources, and opportunities available to make our club and its activities very well known throughout Lakeside and Santee communities. We all have special skills, contacts, etc. to enhance our visibility in our own community. In conjunction with or as part of our Membership Plan, the public relations efforts will bring in new members to our club. Community recognition of the Santee-Lakeside Rotary Club is of upmost importance. I look forward to a great year to build on the clubs successes of the past. Remember -- Service Above Self and that Rotary is, in simple terms, a service organization.

Let’s all have fun this year and your commitment to our success is
