Welcome to Santa Ana College

In 1915, Santa Ana Junior College opened its doors to 26 students as a department

of Santa Ana High School. It was the second junior college founded in Orange County, behind

Fullerton College, and the fourth oldest in all of California.

Ranked as one of the nation’s top two-year colleges awarding associate degrees to Latino and Asian

students, Santa Ana College is recognized throughout the state for its comprehensive workforce

training programs for nurses, firefighters, law enforcement and other medical personnel.

The college has evolved into one of the most energetic and fastest-growing comprehensive

community colleges in the nation, currently serving 29,318 credit and non-credit students per

semester. Santa Ana College will turn 100 years old in 2015. 

We are pleased that you are visiting our campus. The tour you are about to experience will lead

you around the campus. We encourage you to start your tour in front of the S Bldg (Administration)

and proceed in a circular, clockwise direction. Please refer to the map (located at the back of this

tour guide) and follow the suggested pathway on the map. The buildings described in this guide

follow the suggested route. Enjoy your self-guided tour!

A Building: Cesar Chavez

Dedicated in honor of Cesar Chavez, the A

Bldg was built in 1996 to honor the political

activist who fought for the rights and

dignity of farm workers. In this building you

will find the Business Division Office. The

departments located in this building are:

• Accounting & Business Administration

• Business Applications & Technology

• Computer Science

• Engineering

• Global Business & Entrepreneurship

• Paralegal

All Business Division Departments offer

concentrated Certificates that can be used

to demonstrate your competence in your

selected field of Business.

Also in this building, you will find the Fine

and Performing Arts Division Office. This

department is responsible for the following:

• 3-D Modeling & Animation

Additionally, you will find the Distance

Education Office, Fire Technology

Department, Computer Lab, and the

Built in the 1970’s, the C Bldg is for students

who are interested in the Arts.

N Building: Music

Santa Ana College offers music training

for experienced musicians and beginners.

Practice rooms and music labs are provided

at least 52 hours a week, Monday through

Friday. Beginning music students have a

choice of various keyboard, voice, and

instrumental classes. A student majoring

in music can study classical, jazz, and

contemporary pop playing styles. We also

encourage non-majors to take our theory,

musicianship, and electronic music classes.

Santa Ana College features many vocal and

instrumental ensembles, including Concert

Chorale, Chamber Singers, Jazz Ensemble,

Latin Jazz Band, Mariachi, Guitar Ensemble,

Chamber Symphony, and Concert Band.

Santa Ana College offers music courses

and training for beginning to experienced

musicians. In this building you will find:

P Building: Phillips Hall Theatre

Constructed in 1957 and designed for

drama production, the Philips Hall Theatre

is dedicated in honor of Ernest Crozier

Phillips, the first Drama and Public Speaking

instructor at Santa Ana College.

The Santa Ana College Theatre Department

has been providing continuous theatrical

training since 1915, when the college opened

its doors, making the Theatre Department

one of the most historic departments at

Santa Ana College. The Philips Hall Theatre

also hosts SAC’s Dance Department in

concerts and recitals throughout the year. In

this Building, you will find:

D Building: Dunlap Hall

Dunlap Hall, one of the tallest of all

structures at SAC, was constructed in 1974

in honor of John W. Dunlap who attended

Santa Ana College, majored in journalism,

and became editor of the school’s El Don

newspaper.

In this building you will find the Division

of Humanities and Social Sciences. Under

this division you will find the following

L Building: Nealley Library

The Nealley Library was built in 1957 in

honor of Edward M. Nealley, who had

a lifelong commitment to the pursuit of

knowledge and a restless devotion to his

students at Santa Ana College. Mr. Neally

started his career at Santa Ana College in

1917.

The mission of Santa Ana College’s Nealley

Library (SAC) is to promote educational

success, information competency and

lifelong learning through the implementation

of quality programs, services and equitable

access to current and relevant sources. The

Library offers:

• Periodicals

• Laptop Checkout

• Copy Center

Located on the second floor of this building

you will find the Math Center, Success

Santa Ana College offers a degree in

Library Technology. This degree is designed

to successfully prepare students for

employment as library technicians, library

assistants, library media technicians and

other library support staff positions in

school, public, special or academic libraries.

All community members are welcome to use

the library.

J Building:

Auto Shop

The auto shop building offers automotive

and welding technology. Certificates are

offered within the courses to improve your

professional standing.

V Building: Child Development Center

The Early Childhood Development Center

is the newest building of Santa Ana College

located on the southeast side of the campus.

The program serves infants (6 months to

2 years old), toddlers (2-3 years old), and

preschoolers (3-5 years old). There is a full-

day program Monday through Friday from

7:30 a.m. 6:00 p.m. and a part-day program

from 8:00 to 11:00 a.m. or from 1:00 to 4:00

p.m. This center is a brand new, state-of-

the-art facility built specifically to meet the

needs of young children. All classrooms and

beautiful playgrounds have been carefully

designed to meet the optimal growth

potential for each specific age group. The

center offers curriculum that is based on the

foundation that children learn by doing. The

curriculum covers:

• Language & Literacy

• Mathematical Thinking

• Scientific Thinking

• Social Studies

• Personal & Social Development

• Physical Development

• The Arts

U Building:

The Johnson Center is one of the newest

buildings, dedicated in 1981 in honor of John

E. Johnson, who was the first chief executive

officer of Santa Ana College to bear the title

of President. Dr. Johnson started his career

at Santa Ana College as Dean of Students.

He later became Dean of the College and

served as President of Santa Ana College

from 1957-1971. Dr. Johnson’s mission

was to make Santa Ana College the best

community college in the nation.

The bookstore sells and rents used and new

books at a low price to students. They also

sell apparel, gifts, and different types of

materials for courses. The Spot is the newly

Johnson Center/Student Business Office/Bookstore/Cafeteria

renovated student lounge. Other services

you can find in this building are:

B Building: Middle College High School

The Middle College High School Building

provides instruction for 9th grade through

12th grade students. At night there are

computer, English and speech courses.

While enrolled in high school, students are

encouraged to take college level courses.

B33: Centennial Education Center

The adult high diploma program prepares

students to earn a high school diploma.

The center also helps adult students to

increase their reading, writing, grammar and

math. Courses offered at the center are

Mathematics, Language Arts, and Natural &

Social Sciences. The center also provides

GED test preparation.

I Building: Classroom

Once you exit the Middle College High

School (building B), straight ahead, you will

see the I Building which provides stat-of-the-

art classrooms for the students of Santa Ana

College.

F Building: Locker Rooms

Lockers are provided for students who

participate in sports or are enrolled in

Exercise Science. There are offices for

coaches and staff and student classrooms.

G Building:

Cook Gymnasium

Cook Gymnasium is a 22,000 square-foot

Exercise Science Complex. Inside this

building you will find:

• Strength Training Lab

• Dance Studio

• Hydrotherapy Area

• Athletic Training Room

• Basketball Court

• Volleyball

E Building:

Fitness Center

Santa Ana College offers a variety of

classes to stay healthy like circuit training,

kickboxing, yoga, and dance. There is also a

Fitness Center with state-of-the-art exercise

equipment.

W Building: Kinesiology

Located in this building you will find the

Division of Kinesiology. The division provides

opportunities for health and fitness classes,

Intercollegiate Athletics, and professional

preparation for degrees and certificates

in Kinesiology related fields. Curriculum

content includes; sport and fitness skills,

nutrition, health awareness, sports medicine,

exercise leadership, and exercise physiology.

Pathways offered are:

• Kinesiology: Associate of Arts Degree

• Kinesiology: Fitness Specialist Certificate

• Kinesiology: Coaching Certificate

• Kinesiology: Sports Medicine Certificate

You can also find a fitness studio, small gym,

and the department of Wrestling in this

building.

H Building: Hammond Hall

Dana Hammond was instrumental in the

founding of Santa Ana College in 1915 and

retired after serving Santa Ana College as

director, dean, and president of the school.

Located in this building, you will find the

Pharmacy Technology Training Program

where there is a classroom and lab

dedicated to students who are interested

in becoming Pharmacy Technicians.

Additionally, the department of Mathematics

is located in this building. On the second

floor are the Fire Officer Training class

locations. Also on the second floor you can

find the Talent Extension in Science and

Technology: an Urban Partnership (TEST:

UP) Home.

T Building: Technical Arts

Located in this building you will find the

department of Family Consumer Studies

which emphasizes fashion design and

merchandising, and nutrition and foods.

Also located in this building are the homes

of Manufacturing Technology and the

Fashion Design Lab.

R Building: Russell Hall

Herbert O. Russell started his career

at Santa Ana College in 1924 as Physics

scientist, Chairman of the Engineering and

Mechanics Division, Coordinator of Defense

Courses and Civilian Pilot Training Program,

Advisor to the Sophomore class, and

College Director.

In this building there are two division offices:

M Building: Planetarium

In 1967, the Tessmann Planetarium was

appropriately named in the honor of Mrs.

Jennie Lasby Tessmann, a world-renown

astronomer and a dedicated member of the

Santa Ana College faculty. The Tessmann

Planetarium is currently undergoing

renovation and scheduled to reopen in

Spring 2015.

In this building you will find the Tessmann

Planetarium Dome and Theatre. The campus

offers six interactive astronomy shows and

discovers the wonders of the universe. All

shows contain information about the latest

discoveries in astronomy and science. You

need to make a reservation in order to view

the shows. Also located in this building is the

Speech Center.

X Building: Safety & Security

The mission of the District Safety

Department of the Rancho Santiago

Community College District is to serve

and protect the people and property at all

district locations to ensure a safe and secure

educational environment that encourages

personal and intellectual growth.

The Campus Safety Department is in

operation 24 hours a day/7 days a week. Its

primary responsibility is to provide for the

security and safety of students, staff, and

public on district premises as well as provide

for the security of district property.

The District Safety and Security Department

is located in the X building. The telephone

number is (714) 564-6330 (or 333 from a

campus phone). Anyone needing assistance

may come to the office Monday - Thursday

(7:30 a.m.–10 p.m.) and Friday (7:30 a.m.–

4:00  p.m.) or use an emergency call-box,

located throughout the campus. After hours

the Patrol Officers can be reached by calling

the office phone or by using one of the

yellow emergency call-boxes.

Digital Media Center (DMC)

In 2006, the Digital Media Center opened to assist

the emerging digital media industry. The purpose

of the DMC is to attract businesses within Orange

County and provide educational programs in TV/video

communication, digital media arts, digital music and

business seminars. Every semester, the DMC offers

courses within the digital media industry such as digital

media arts to help students at Santa Ana College

achieve an AA degree or certificate through Santa Ana

College.

O.C. Sheriff’s Regional Training Academy is located in

Tustin and holds two sheriff’s special officer academies

and six basic academies each year. The facility houses

an arrest and control techniques training area, a weight

room, four classrooms, and other equipment for

individuals in training. Training division staff and Santa

Ana Criminal Justice training partners collaborate to

ensure that the individuals in the academy receive the

best training.

The Central Net Training Center helps train firefighters

in the most sufficient and updated methods. The facility

consists of a five story burn tower, auto extrication,

drafting pit, and other equipment for individuals in

training. Specialized training consists of EMT training,

paramedic training, evaluated drills, and other types of

classes.

The Centennial Education Center is the main location

for the School of Continuing Education. Its purpose is
