Hinduism as a religion has evolved over the period of thousands of years. May be, due to
that, lot of auxiliary concepts, have got introduced over the period of time. Unfortunately,
these auxiliary concepts have now become more prominent than the original concepts
de+ined by Vedas and Upanishads. Even the people who call themselves Hindu, don't
know those original concepts, partly because it is available in Sanskrit language, which is
not very easy to understand for today's generation.
The idea of this article is to introduce today generation, the concept through some
common question and answers. I have selected some questions to start with. Please feel
free to write your feedback, so that I can improve it further.
• Unlike other religion, there are many books in Hinduism, which is very confusing, is
there any easy way to understand it? Is there any literature which has more authority
than others?
• What is the de+inition of God? Is Hinduism all about worshiping millions of gods?
• Why there are so many casts, un-touchability and unfair practices in Hinduism. Is
this is what given in literature?
• There are so many issues in our life, also so much bad around us. Is this all God
wanted us to have?
Q1: Unlike other religion, there are many books in Hinduism, which is very
confusing. Is there any easy way to understand it? Is there any literature which has
more authority than others?
Vedic religion is de+ined through four major sections of literature: Shrutis, Smrutis,
ShastrasandPuranas.Out of these Shrutis provide basic understanding of Supreme Being
or Brahman, along with various ways to reach it. This part of the religion is considered to
be core of the Hinduism and assumed to be directly coming from hiranyagarbha, and
transferred from one Yuga to other. Four Vedas namely, Rig-Veda, SamVeda, Krishna/
Shukla Yajurveda, and Athervaveda, along with associatedUpanishads, Brahmanas and
Aranyakas and Bhagwadgita make the major chunk of Shruti section of Hinduism.
Bhagwadgita, even though part of puranicliterature of Mahabharata, is considered as
Shruti by many scholers, as it was told by Srikrishna, an incarnation of supreme being or
Brahman.
Smriti and Shastras, like Manusmriti, YadnyavalkyaSmriti, Dharmashastras, provide basic
guidelines to people on how to lead a normal life (which may or may not be leading to
supreme being or Moksha) and maintain a order in the society. By de+inition, they are
supposed to be revised with the changing time, sometime explicitly or sometime getting
replaced with the law of land.
Getting to Know Hinduism : Through Questions

In addition to this, Puranas like Bhagwatpuran, Devipuran, Mahabharata, Ramayan give
examples of the how great personalities in the past have lived life. The intent of this is to
provide live examples, so that when a situation arises, these stories will help us in making
a decision in selecting good vs. bad. Also various personalities in these puranas act as an
idol for the society, providing a way which others can follow. But we need to note that, the
text in these puranas is written by philosophers/rishis of various times frames spread
over multiple millenniums. Also, the oral tradition used to transfer this knowledge was
not as strong as that of Vedas, so there is always a scope of discrepancies, contradictions
getting added over a period of time. So in case of any contradiction in any of the
literatures, Shrutis are supposed to take precedence.
Q2: What is the de3inition of God? Is Hinduism all about worshiping millions of
gods?
Let’s start with the de+inition given in Ishopanishad,
om purnam ada purnam idam purnat purnam udachyate |
purnasya purnam adaya purnam evavasischyate ||
|| om Shanti Shanti Shanti ||
Which indicates that, God is the one who is in every bit of the world in such way that
which can not be separated.
Hinduism believes in monastic or one dimension view of world where everything is made
or covered by this ultimate thing. It believes that God makes up every living/non-living
entity. We as people, don’t see it that way, as we do not have the ability to see through,
what is shown to us by maya. The goal of our life is to come out of this condition and
realize our self as Brahman. This self-realized state is called Moksha. Shrutis prescribe
many way to achieve this goal, including, Bhakti, Dnyana, Dhyan, Karma yogas and many
other.
With this background, you may be wondering, then why do we have so many gods,
differentiation in Hinduism. Simple answer would be, as God is in everything, you can
prey it in any form you wish to like, your choice. Not everybody is capable of seeing God
in everything, so for the common people, it is easy to start with something which is easy
understand and relate. As said in Bhagwadgita, once you start with a +irm bhaktion any
form you like, God will guide in further progress.
So, in short, idol worship is not ‘THE’ principle of Hinduism, but just a means given to
common people, so that they can prey to any form they like, while in the early stages of
their spiritual progress. Once their conviction grows, they slowly understand the real
Brahman and work towards reaching it.

Anyways, as we say at the end of every major pooja/prayer:
Akashat patitam toyam, yatha gachati sagaram |
Sarva deva namaskaram, keshavam pratigachati ||
Whichever God you prey, it +inally reaches to the ultimate being, the Keshava.
Q3: Why there are so many casts, un-touchability and unfair practices in Hinduism.
Is this is what given in literature?
Do you think, a philosophy that teaches you to see God is in every living/non-living thing,
would have practices like un-touchability etc.? Doesn’t seem logical, correct? And
thankfully it is not.
Today’s social issue of cast-ism, untouchability got introduced during later period
through the evolution of various Smritiliterature, like Dharmashastras, mostly in last two
millenniums. We are thankful to Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar, Mahatma Gandhi, Jyotiba
Phule to help us get rid of this partially. But, even today, we see the deep rooted impact of
this in our society and still more work is needed to get back to true Hinduism de+ined by
Vedas. So let’s start with understanding what is said in Vedas and other Shrutiliterature.
As we discussed earlier, the ultimate goal of every person is to achieve the self
realization. But there are very few people who achieve this goal, while others are, either
still trying or not even aware of it. So, during this process, we need to have a society
which is self sustained. For this reason, vedicliterature created a work structure, where
we have four sections called varnas. First reference of this appears in Purush Suktam in
Rigveda (Rig Veda 10.7.90.1).
1. Brahmin, working towards carrying the vedicknowledge from one generation to
other, along with helping others to understand it. They were not only required to
know the vedic literature, but also were required to have sessions for the people in
the locality so that everybody understands true goal of life, and work towards it,
by using the path suitable for them.
2. Kshtriyas, working towards protecting their locality/country from outside
invasion and maintain a law or order.
3. Vaishya, working towards doing various businesses which would enable the
society to sustain.
“...Do you think, a philosophy that teaches you to see God is in every
living/non-living thing, would have practices like un-touchability etc.?
Doesn’t seem logical, correct? And thankfully it is not…”
सॅन डएगो महारा मंडळ समान गुढ पाडवा २०१३

4. Fourth is the working class called Shudras. They work towards enabling the +irst
three complete their tasks.
There is no mention in any of the Shrutisthat somebody becomes +irst three (namely
Brahmin, Kshtriya, Vaishya) just by birth. In fact there is a mention that everybody is
Shudraat birth, and only become the dwija (as the +irst three called) by a ceremony,
followed by a strict life. There are also many examples of people moving from one varna
to another, most notable being Maharshi Viswamitra (Kshtriya to Brahmin) and Maharshi
Valmiki (Shudrato Brahmin).
With this Vedicde+initions, 99% of today’s Brahmins (the ones which are born in
Brahmin families) are not doing the Job of Brahmin, neither they know Vedas, nor follow
the strict acetic life, so they don’t qualify to be called as Brahmins.
Most of us, who do jobs in private/public sector, are part of working class, which is
named 'Shudra' irrespective of the families we were born.
Q4: There are so many issues in our life, also so much bad around us. Is this all God
wanted us to have?
Hinduism believes in a philosophy of Karma, and according to it, what you do would
come back to you. What we get in life is earned by us, part of it is from this life, and
remaining from earlier lives. As learned people say, we take birth to spend the karma
accumulated in earlier lives, and while spending accumulated karma, we end up in
creating new ones. And to spend this newly created Karma that we need to take
additional births. This way cycle of birth and death continue. The problems we have in
our life are created by us and there is nobody else to blame. And if we want to get out of
it, there is nobody but ourselves, who needs to act.
Both the good and bad karma (paap and punya as we call) is equally sticky, and when we
earn it, and could not spend all of it in given life, we need to take additional birth(s) to
clear them off. If we have too much of good karma, you would get a life, where you will
have all the comforts and easy life. In the contrast, if you have too much bad Karma, you
would have dif+icult situations in life. Most of the people, generally, we have mix of good
and bad karma, which leads to a life, which has some good things and some bad things.
“...There is no mention in any of the Shrutisthat somebody
becomes +irst three (namely Brahmin, Kshtriya, Vaishya) just by
birth. In fact there is a mention that everybody is Shudraat birth,
and only become the dwija (as the +irst three called) by a
ceremony, followed by a strict life…”
सॅन डएगो महारा मंडळ समान गुढ पाडवा २०१३
10
In order to know, what we need to do, lets try to understand the Karma in little more
detail. As said in NadaBinduupanishad, we have two types of accumulated Karma from
multiple lives. Sanchitis the total accumulated karma, while Prarabdhais the currently
active one, which we are suppose to spend. When we take birth, the Brahma/
Chitragupta, choose the Prarabdhaout of the Sanchit, and assigns it to us. This way,
Prarabdhais more or less +ixed for a life, and there is nothing that anybody can change.
Which means, the conditions (or situations) that we are going to face in a given life are
more or less +ixed. But, how we behave (or act, react) in those situations is completely in
our control. Which means, the outcomes are not +ixed, and they depend on what we do, in
those good/bad situations. We have seen many examples in life, where some people have
turned worst possible situation in a success, while others who have turned best possible
situation into failure.
We, as individual have been given complete freedom to choose what we want to do in
our life and how we want to lead. With freedom comes responsibility. So, we are also
responsible for our acts and need to be ready to accept the outcomes, how good or bad it
is, without complaining. In the rule book, there are no concessions, it is not that if we do
some paap, we can do some punya to negate that. It does not work that way, if you do
bad+good, you would get bad+good back, they don’t cancel out. It’s very plain and
simple, What you sow is what you reap. This has been going on from ages for each of us,
and will continue.
But, there is ray of hope, and as said in Bhagwadgita, it is called as KarmaYoga. One can
also choose other paths, like BhaktiYoga,DhyanYoga,DnyanYoga or combinations of
some or all of these. They all give us a way to clear the Sanchit and leads us to self-
realization/Moksha.
“...Hinduism believes in a philosophy of Karma, and according to it, what
you do would come back to you… The problems we have in our life are
created by us and there is nobody else to blame. And if we want to get
out of it, there is nobody but ourselves, who needs to act…”

Makar Sankrant Moments from Celebration

Shalaka Bhosale
Eat fruit alone. Every morning have a breakfast of fruit. This is a wonderful way to start
the day, because fruit is a powerful detoxi+ier. It provides nutrients as well as +iber, which
helps in keeping the intestines clean and help to lower cholesterol in blood.
Many people think that eating fruit for dessert is a healthy choice, but in fact it gets held
in your stomach by the other foods, causing fermentation.
After eating fruit, allow at least one to two hours before eating any other kind of food.
Morning is the best time to eat fruit.
Do not combine protein with starch. Protein foods and starchy foods require different
digestive juices in order to be properly broken down and used by the body. Avoid eating
the traditional American diet of meat and potatoes, or meat and other starches, as well as
sandwiches containing cheese, meats, eggs or other proteins. When you think about how
regularly we consume these combinations, it is no wonder we suffer from so many diges-
tive disorders.
Eat protein alone or with vegetables. The enzymes in the vegetables enhance the di-
gestion of protein. The +iber contained in the vegetables helps to move the non-+iber pro-
tein foods rapidly through the intestines.
If you eat starches, eat them alone or with vegetables. Since vegetables do not require
their own speci+ic digestive juices, they can be digested in the alkaline environment re-
quired by starches.
Do not drink with meals. If you drink water, tea, or any other beverage along with your
meals, you effectively dilute the digestive juices that are needed to break down the food,
preventing it from being properly digested. The best time to drink +luids is between
meals- at least ½ hour before or after eating. If you are eating fruits & vegetables high in
water contents, or beans and grains prepared with water, then food itself will provide
plenty of +luid, and you should not feel thirsty after your meal. If you do +ind that you are
thirsty after eating, you may be using too much salt in your food.
Following these easy +ive steps to food combining will be one of best things you can do
for your digestive system and health. If its sound too complicated, let’s put it in simpler
terms: instead of eating meat & potatoes, eat meat with a salad or some steamed vegeta-
bles. Eat the potato with cooked or raw vegetables or in a vegetable soup with no meat.
Eat fruits only in the morning. If you like pasta, great! Eat whole grain pasta with vegeta-
bles or by itself with a nice vegetable sauce. If sandwiches are your thing, have a grilled
vegetable sandwich on whole grain bread.

Ten Reasons to Throw Out Your Microwave Oven
Shalaka Bhosale
From the conclusion of the Swiss, Russian and German scienti+ic clinical studies, we can
no longer ignore the microwave oven sitting in our kitchens. Based on this research, we
will conclude this with the following:
1. Continually eating food processed from a microwave oven causes long term-permanent
-brain damage by ‘shorting out’ electrical impulses in the brain [de-polarizing or de-
magnetizing the brain tissue].
2. The human body cannot break down the unknown by-products created in microwaved
food.
3. Male and female hormone production is shut down and/or altered by continually eat-
ing microwaved foods.
4. The effects of microwaved food by-products are residual [long term, permanent] with-
in the human body.
5. Minerals, vitamins, and nutrients of all microwaved food are reduced or altered so that
the human body gets little or no bene+it, or the human body absorbs altered compounds
that cannot be broken down.
6. The minerals in the vegetables are altered into cancerous free radicals when cooked in
microwave ovens.
7. Microwaved foods cause stomach and intestinal cancerous growths [tumors]. This may
help explain the rapidly increased rate of colon cancer in America.
8. The prolonged eating of microwaved foods causes cancerous cells to increase in human
blood.
9. Continual ingestion of microwaved foods causes immune system de+iciencies through
lymph gland and blood serum alterations.
10. Eating microwaved food causes loss of memory, concentration, emotional-instability,
and a decrease of intelligence.
