Welcome to the 2013 issue of SANGALO, the annual publication brought to you

by the Nepal Center of North Carolina (NCNC).

Our past issues of SANGALO roared onto the ground scene when they hit the

mailboxes and rang the bells of our community members. As we continue on

our journey of celebrating our past and embracing our future, it is our pleasure

to bring you this new issue of SANGALO. Thank you in advance for embracing

our newest publication.

SANGALO is a collection of several items. It includes articles and creations of our

community members and writers in both English and Nepali languages, It also

highlights our annual activities, financial details, and other matters of personal

interests and needs. We believe this issue of SANGALO will also be a treasure

both for Nepali and International readers.

The mission of NCNC is to preserve and foster Nepalese identity, cultural heri-

tage, and our literature among Nepalese and friends of Nepal alike in North

Carolina and beyond. We believe this issue and all previous issues of SANGALO

have proven to be meaningful for this mission. We do encourage all to share

your ideas, thoughts and creations through SANGALO.

President’s Message

Dear Community Members and Well-wishers of NCNC:

Greetings!

It has been four years since I came to the Nepal Center of North Caro-lina (NCNC) Executive Committee and vowed to serve you and this commu-nity. Of all the jobs at NCNC, leading this organization as a president is cer-tainly one of the most challenging and rewarding tasks. And since the moment I took office, I've counted on the excep-tional experience and insights of my seniors every day and serving this com-munity has been an utter privilege.

As I conclude my term as president of NCNC, I would like to take this oppor-tunity to recognize and honor each and every member of the community, dedi-cated volunteers, supporters and well- wishers for lending their helping hands when needed. Their insights and tireless work have made great contribution to add a new page in the history of NCNC.

As we approach the end of our two-year term, I wanted to look back at our journey from the beginning. When I

look back from the reality of the ground, it was evident that a few showers were not going to dampen our enthusiasm, honesty, eager and vigor to serve at NCNC. Backed by the dedicated com-munity, the new executive commit-tee entered into the office of NCNC on January 1, 2012 with a standing ova-tion. Since then, we have been con-stantly working for the community and we have fulfilled most of our promises we made in the beginning. We feel that with some ground breaking history, we have made big strides in 2012-13. Step-ping on this ground and reaching great accomplishments, now we can start thinking about the ambitious goal of building a community center for com-munity here in North Carolina. Together let's plan for future so that we can claim NCNC as ours.

My trip to Honduras

It felt like a dream when I came back to North Carolina; after being away for a week at Honduras. I have always wanted to study abroad or at least travel to different destinations during my college experi-ence. I am aware that jealousy is an ugly trait but I must admit I have been jealous of friends who had the opportunity to travel abroad while I was stuck in my home town working and taking summer classes. Although I benefited tremendously from working and taking classes during the summer, I wish I could have been making my mark in the worlds as some of my friends were doing. I never imagined that I would have the opportunity to go to Honduras. The thought of it was impossible.

I remember it as if it was yesterday. It was

almost New Year when I received an email that said “there are spots available for the Honduras trip, if you are interested; let me know”. I was just tired of rant-ing the chant “oh next year will be different and I can try during the next summer” then it hit me that there will be no next summer for me; I will be graduating from college next year. The thought I that will soon complete a major milestone of my adult life by gradu-ating from college and the fact that I will turn twenty one soon hit me. I have always thought of myself as a baby; where did that time go. With age and expe-rience come responsibilities one should be ready to face the challenges that those responsibilities often times bring with them. As my baba would preach time and time again, if he ever felt like I was wasting time; “time is money and don’t forget that”. We have to learn to work and plan our time accordingly and it is essen-tial to know the value of time since it does not wait for us. I am still horrible at making New Year’s resolution or keeping one, but for some reason, at that moment, I had the urgency to say “yes I want to go Honduras” in that email.

I knew that if I don’t say “Yes, to Honduras”, that the chance might never come again and I had to act on this opportunity now. There is an African prov-erb that says “The best time to plant a tree is twenty years ago. The second best time is now”. Waiting for a

chance to come by will be too late; I believe life is all about doing things at right time when the moments feel right. My spring break was in less than a month and slowly and finally I started the process of immu-nizations, purchasing tickets and getting my passport ready for my trip. I was still doing last minute shop-ping when the day to leave arrived. I had hardly slept; I do not know if it was because of excitement or fear that I was not able to fall asleep. Worrying about ev-erything comes naturally to me; it is a quality I have inherited from my mother and I’m very aware of it. The excitement of going to an unknown land and the adventures that were to come all made me especially anxious.

The day finally arrived, I woke up at 3 am and did all my morning rituals and was thankful that I had packed my suitcases a day ahead. That feeling that people describe as “butterflies in the stomach”, I could feel that it was forming in my stomach. I ate my break-fast and checked off everything on my to-do list and then was ready to leave my house. As, I was about to leave my house, I checked my bags to make sure I had the entire essential item such as my phones, pass-ports and tickets. People typically feel like they will forget important items before a big presentation or in the trip. I kept rechecking my bag with the fear of missing something. As I looked at my parent’s faces, I could sense nervousness emerging in their faces and they tried to hide it; I knew they were worrying about me. Because I knew about their worry, I called them twice a day every day, while I was at Honduras. There were my parents worrying about me and I was wor-rying about them wondering how they were going to be away from me for one whole week. It’s not like somewhere they could drive; I was going to be out of country. Once I saw my friends, the fear alleviated and suddenly I was very excited about this trip: my first trip out of country and I had forgotten about my par-ents who were still there when I turned around ( I did not forget them immediately, I knew they were there). The excitement of seeing my friends made me forget, for one moment, the sadness of leaving my parents behind. My parents waited till I went through the se-


curity, jumping up and down trying to catch the last hand waves and flying kisses.

Looking down from above in the plane was so heavenly and peaceful; it brought back the memo-ries of when I first came to the United States. During our trip we had our lay over at Atlanta and we were all excited to meet another group of students from UPENN (University of Pennsylvania) who were join-ing us in our adventure. Our next and final flight was to Honduras, after getting lunch we headed down to our gate to get our boarding passes and board to our plane for our final destination. The flight was three hours long and when I opened my eyes to see the scenery all I could see was mountains, some of which had wildfires and houses all around the city of Tegu-cigalpa. We were welcomed by the team of Global Brigade. They helped us with to carry our luggage and provided us with transportations. First thing first, I gave my parents the call letting them know about my safe arrival. As, I sat in the front seat of the bus, Te-gucigalpa reminded me so much about Kathmandu. The way the city was designed, the housing, the roads, the locations, the environment, the vehicles and local shops and vendors in the streets, It did not feel like a foreign city to me but rather it felt like home. After an hour long bus drive, we arrived in the fancy looking resort or compound named “Rapaco”. I was glad to see myriad of people from different colleges who were also there for the same purpose to volunteer during their spring break. The Rapaco was divided into dif-ferent social awareness program; I was in Honduras as part of medical and dental brigade, while others schools were there for other reason such as water, microfinance and architecture brigade. It was good to see so many young minds willing to give up their spring break to come to a third world country with the aim of making a positive impact to an underprivi-leged community that was severely affected by a lack of proper education and poverty.

At the end of the day, we were still getting acquainted with our new friends and learning about them and their families while asking a bunch of ques-tions. Some of our friends decided that we should ex-plore the area of the Rapaco. Even today, I still look at my background screen of my computer—a picture of Honduras and am still amazed by its beauty. It is true when one says anything in nature that is natu-ral; is beautiful. We came across a small store called “la tienda” which had a variety of the souvenir pieces that represents Honduras. They did have a candy and snack sections where one could splurge on sugar. Be-

fore we knew it, it was about to get dark and all of us were hungry and were just waiting for our food. Food, what can we say we about it. I love food and I know it very well. We were served three meals a day: - at breakfast before leaving for the day, at lunch and at night. I always looked forward to dinner (not to say that breakfast or lunch was not good), it was just at dinner there were more varieties and every time we were served different dishes, which made the experi-ence more memorable. With all that endless eating three times a day, I was pretty sure that I had gained some weight. As my friend Elizabeth said “Everyone that goes to South of America loses weight, you are the only one who gained weight, and you defy nature”. I mean what can I say, I loved the food there so much, when I came back it took a while for my taste buds to get accustomed to the food here again.

The first day of the week all the volunteers worked on medical sorting for the whole week and at the end of the day we visited the orphanage. To be honest I have never visited an orphanage and visit-ing it for the first time I had mixed feelings. The or-phanage had kids who were under the age of 3-13 years old. Not all the children were orphaned some of them had come to the orphanage because their parents couldn’t afford to raise them. I was excited to see the kids running towards us and very sad think-ing that I was in an orphanage. I do consider myself very lucky and I am very thankful for everything that I have been in my life. What upset me most about the orphanage was that we had to lie to the children that we would come back the next day when they asked us. We had to lie to these innocent children and giv-ing them false hope. My friends had different opinions than mine and looked at situation differently. They said that they were grateful for being able to make those kid’s happy (even if it was just for one day). I guess it make sense if you looked at it that way but visiting the orphanages was still the least of my favor-ite things during the trip.

In day 2, we visited the village called “La Sa-benta”, all of the volunteers were divided in different sections of the clinic. Either you work one whole day in the pharmacy or work either in dentistry, gynecol-ogy, data informatics or charla. For our first visit, I de-cided that I wanted to work in the pharmacy. Some of the drugs were very familiar to me and some were different. When a patient visits for the first time, they go to the doctors that are available either for the normal physical checkup or those for particular con-cerns. Married or older women are required to get a


Pap smear and breast checkup in order to prevent the risk of cervical and breast cancer. After going through the physical check up and going through the data informatics, the patient goes to the dentist to clean or take their teeth out. Due to the lack of education there are “Charla” :- a gathering of group for kids and adults. In the charla for kids, they were taught how to clean their teeth and the importance of cleaning their teeth. This was done in an engaging way by us-ing either songs or rhymes. In the charla for adults, it was focused in the importance of taking their multi-vitamins and their medications. Volunteers also im-parted wisdom about eating right and about cervical and breast cancer for women. After the patient had visited the doctors and dentist they dropped their prescription at the pharmacy for it to be filled and go to the charla afterwards to learn about the various topics. Working in the pharmacy was not only busy but sometimes but also boring because you had to wait on patients. The medications in the pharmacy was sorted and labeled according to multivitamins, cold/fever/pain, allergy, dermatology, diabetes and high blood pressure. As not being able to converse in Spanish properly, I was unable to communicate with the patients about the medications but thankfully we had translator to help us. The day ended around 4 pm, everyone packed their belongings and started com-ing to the pharmacy to load the suitcases of medi-cines in the truck. At the end of the hectic day , every-one was ready to go the rapaco and lie down in the hammocks. Next day, we arrived again at “La Sabenta” in the morning, we did all our daily work: helping set up either in the pharmacy or the location we were assigned to volunteer. My first half of the day start-ed working with Dr.Ana, a recent graduate from the medical school in Honduras, who volunteers with the Global Brigade as well. Working with the doctor and watching Pap smear being performed, I realized that gynecology was not for me. After lunch, my duties started in dentistry where I had to help the dentist with providing clean tools and giving her the right instruments while she performed extractions. Many had to get extractions of their teeth because of the tooth decay caused by not brushing their teeth at all; on discovering this, I thought it was extremely crucial to emphasize the importance of brushing your teeth while I volunteered in the kid’s charla.

Day 4 started pretty early in the morning in rapaco as everyone had gathered around or got in line for breakfast. We had to wake up pretty early than our last schedule because the village we were visiting today was far away. After an hour ride, we arrived at “La

Concepcion”, it was a very small village about a thirty minute drive from the main road and the roads were uneven. As our bus drove from one house to the other, you could see the excitement in the people’s faces as they ran towards to see us what we have brought with us for them today. As usual, the clinic was set up in the school compound. As the day progressed, we started helping or working together one by one. Today, I was set up to work in the charla to teach little kids the importance about brushing their teeth regularly. As my fellow volunteers and I tried to balance keeping the children entertained while making paper crowns that we adorned with different stickers. I realized that my creativity was not as poor as I had expected. Since there were more pre-teens than younger children in our group, we decided to have a dance party where we could all learned how to “Bachata”, which is one of the famous dances in Central and South America. I felt like I mastered the “Bachata” despite no real prior experience. After lunch, everyone’s shift had changed and I was in the data informatics. Everyone hated this job but I liked it. I guess it was fun because I had some interaction with the people and was able to com-municate with them with little Spanish that I knew. Soccer has a huge impact on people’s lives. One can tell this as one sees a lot of people wearing the jersey that represents their national team, be that person be adults or children. People were passionate about the sport and very well a good at playing it. As our week was about to come to the end, it was sad to see the other members of brigade leave. Despite the sadness, it was definitely one of my favorite’s nights at Hondu-ras as we all gathered not just brigade volunteers but everyone from our group leaders to the doctors and started dancing and just having fun.

Day 5 the last day at “La Concepcion” and our last day at Honduras, we were all thinking the same think as we look into each other faces realizing how fast the time flew by. Like yesterday, today was a new day but something about it has changed. Either it was the excitement about going home or the sadness about the trip that ended so fast; we all had mixed feelings. Throughout the day everything was running smooth-ly and the weather had favored us it was neither hot nor humid. As we were all gathering around and pack-ing our things, we saw a man with blood in his hands and were wondering what was going on. While cut-ting the trees or bushes he had cut his fingers with a machete and required a stitching. We were all lucky that we got the opportunity to see a live stitching pro-cess on his hand and the patient was lucky that he did not have to travel 2 hours to go to hospital to get his

stitches and had to pay out of his pocket. After ev-erything was packed everyone gathered around the center as one of the organizers in the village thanked us for our presence and said a little speech for us. As we departed, it was nice to see the people who came out of their houses just to say good bye to us and of-fer their best wishes for our trip and our future.

As the sun was about to set, I looked through the window to capture the beauty of this land one last time and reminisced about all the things I had done during this week and thought about what I might do in the future. One of the biggest lessons I have learned from this trip is that time never and

will never waits for us; it is our responsibility to take everything as it comes and learn to appreciate every-thing and all the opportunities we get to experience. I knew how the world worked and how it was but going to Honduras made me see things in different perspectives. It made me value for the things that are presented to me despite it being big or small, it made me realize the effort that goes in making it and earn-ing it. As I look back at my spring break, I am glad that I made an effort and was able to have this experience. There were certain things that I might have agreed on how Global Brigade worked but most importantly I was thankful that they were there working day and night helping make their society and their country a better place for their citizens.


The TitanicWho did it all?

The sun was shining bright, and the waves looked glamorous. Who knew that in just days half of the passengers on this ship would be dead? The Titanic is a beautiful ship that weighed over 52,000 tons and was 175 feet tall. This wonderful ship held over 2200 passengers on its maiden journey. She was the big-gest ship at the time in the world, and has won many awards for size, structure, and beauty. On April 14th 1912, this beautiful ship collided with an ice berg at 11:40pm and then later sank completely at 2:20am. This beauty will always be remembered in an infa-mous way because it has taken the life of so many people. We all know that she sunk and we know that she has taken so many lives with her, but the question is….. Whose fault was it? Who could have stopped it from taking the lives of so many people? In my opin-ion, it’s the Californians fault.

The Californian was a British ship owned by Leyland Line. It weighed 6,223 tons and is usually viewed in a bad way because of what the crew and workers on this ship did on the night of April 14th. This ship, be-ing only 19 miles away from the sinking titanic, did not go rescue the Titanic when it hit an iceberg, but instead ignored the help flares. All of the deaths that occurred during the sinking of the Titanic are the Cali-fornians fault.

The Californian is not being blamed for being re-sponsible for the sinking of the titanic, but it is being blamed for not helping rescue the passengers. Being only nineteen miles away; the Californian did NOT come save the Titanic. Not only that but it states in an article that when the Titanic sent help signals, the cap-

tain of the Californian not only ignored them, but sent another one back saying “we hear you but we’re not coming to help save you!” Also in that article it says the Californian operator had fallen asleep at 12 and had woken up by 3 am. Then the Titanic had hit an ice berg at 11:40. By that time the Titanic had already sunk. If the Californian crew or captain had been a little kind hearted, and if not if they had at least done their job, then maybe all of those lives could have been saved. The Californian has done a cruel job and in my opinion, should be punished greatly.

The Californian is also being blamed for ignoring help flares. It says so in the article that if the captain has actually responded to the help signals, then all of the lives could probably be saved. The Californian captain was so selfish he did not even care to go check what was wrong. The ship also ignored the commands that the ship locators were sending. With the Californians help the day April 15th could have been just an ordinary day, but the Californian has caused it to be one of the worst in US history.

The Californian has caused it all. Misery for so many families, so many young lives gone, all of this because one cruel action the captain made. They ignored help signals, didn’t care to go check what was wrong being nineteen miles away, and fell asleep on the job. All of these factors have added up and have caused the sinking of the titanic. Who or What do YOU believe caused this horrible sinking?

Ervan and the Box

The glass mug fell and shattered into a million pieces. Ervan dropped down to pick it up. He started to panic, his masters would not be happy. He knew it was an accident but still they might care. “Ouch!” screamed Ervan. He slowly pulled out the glass from his thumb. His blood started exiting his wound quickly. He quickly got up and got some paper tow-el and closed it by tying it. He wished there was a broom but he wasn’t quite lucky.

There weren’t any cleaning supplies so he took of his sweater to clean the mess. He started to clean the dishes again after he finished. His master’s or-ders came back to him. ‘’Do the laundry, wash the car, mop the floors and lastly make dinner’’

It was nine when his master came home through the door laughing. He quickly went to meet them. “Is dinner ready?”Asked the man.

“Yes sir" replied Erevan. ”It’s on the table sir.’’

"Good” Mr. Bonsari, “Now you may leave."

Ervan was just about to leave when Mrs.Bonsari and Mr. Bonasari came rushing.

In their hands each had one piece of glass which he had missed

‘’ Where is my favorite piece of glass’’ Ervan stam-mered a reply ‘’ It broke madam Bonsari, I was wash-ing it when it broke’’ Mrs. Bonsari turned read and started to breathe heavily ‘’Fine, I’ll excuse…” ‘’What is that?’’ ‘’ “What is this, I give you a job and you dare steal from me? Ervan couldn’t speak even a single word. “Speak Boy”, Mr. Bonsari quickly opened the bag and by that time all of the Bonsari family had rushed over, just to see Mr. Bonsari pull out food his wife had given Ervan to eat. Mr. Bonsari put it back. "You can go now.” he said embarrassedly.

As he exited the door he started to panic. Where was it? Where was the box? He wanted to cry, how he could have lost it. 'The box was not mine, I couldn’t

have lost it, and he trusted me.'

He closed his eyes and thought …

It had been eight and he was washing Mrs. Bon-sai’s car in the garage since it was illegal for him to be working. That’s when the doorbell rang and he went to get it. There was an old man, maybe in his seventies who had white hair ,a blue shirt, brown pant and a sock on one foot and a polished shoe on his right foot, What really caught his eyes was the football shape box in his hand be wondered how he had even sur-vived the cold snow like that. ‘’Quickly take it, its valu-able, you must take it to my son, here is his address “he said giving him a piece of paper ‘’please you must give it to him, I am in danger.”

“Ok’’ said Ervan who always said yes. “But I can’t go till morning.”

“You can go tomorrow just hide this now."…..

His ears picked up a dissonant sound. He twisted his head to look back. His eye went wide as he stared at the scene before him. In front of him was Mr. Bon-sari's cat, Rover in between his jaws lay the box like football .It had silver hinges and was made from pol-ished oak, sliver hinges and locks. Rover wagged his tail and scurried away after dropping the box before Ervan feet. Ervan looked at him gratefully.

By the time he had reached home, he was in a good mood. His stepmom opened the door for him. She quickly noticed the box and asked “what is that?”

“It’s a box I have to deliver “he replied.

“To whom” she asked. So he told what had hap-pened. “Can I see?” asked his stepmom. He showed it to her.

“Let’s see what’s in it? It’s most likely valuable.”

She grabbed for it but he dodged and ran to his


room.

He looked out of the small window, light and lights. Tomorrow was Christmas, and all of the other fami-lies were celebrating. Ervan’s chest felt heavy and on the brink of his eyes were tears. He wondered how it would feel to actually celebrate it himself. He smiled as he remembered the time he and his siblings espe-cially his sister had tried to do so. He did celebrate it but only a hug that was it, it was all they could give each other. Every year they looked out and imagined they were all rich and lived on Roseberry street in big houses on Christmas not in little Gyominon street. They were of course glad of what they had some people didn’t even have what they had which was not much but clothes and a house but they all knew family was the most important.

His sister was paralyzed since birth. There were seven people in his house, his father, who for most of the time was busy drinking, his stepmom, her three kids and Ervan 13 years old and his sister six years . His stepmom took care of his sister but he always found her messy.

What was in the box he thought? Maybe they could use it. No. Then suddenly he heard knocking, "yes"

“I put the address of another person on the door .He called you today, you have to work there tomor-row, you have to be there at 6 am sharp! “

“Ok.” He said slowly.

He started to panic again he would have to take box there tonight. His step mom would take it when he was working and if he took it to work he might lose it. He promised the old man he would deliver it tomorrow morning.

It was midnight and when he confirmed all of his family member were sleeping he got up and grabbed the box, he exited his house with it a flash-light which belonged to his dad and a watch which was an hour late and couldn’t be fixed. He quickly ran and ran but quickly become tired. His muscle hurt when he moved and his body was quivering. It was hours before he reached the street and it was some

time before he found the house.

He rang the bell. He could hear footsteps as the light came on. The door was opened by a young man. ‘’Hello! Are you Mr. N?”

‘’yes.”

‘’your dad sent to me give you this, I am sorry it’s so early but I couldn’t wait.” Ervan spoke slowly.

“It’s quite all right I was awake anyways “Mr. N. smiled.

Ervan said good bye and ran to work.

It was 4:59 when he reached the new house ac-cording to his watch. He rang the bell and the door opened. Ervan was surprised. It was the same old man who had given him the box. “Come in.” he said smiling.

“What’s the work” Ervan asked.

“Nothing you just completed your job honestly, you delivered the box. Now ask for anything at all houses, cars, gold anything you want.”

He stared in bewilderment for on the table was the box he had just delivered.

“Yes” the old man answered.

“Anything?”

“Yes.”

It didn’t take very long. “I wish my sister was able to walk if it isn’t to hard”

“Then so be it.”

Ervan was suddenly home and there in front of him was his sister who was happily running around a Christmas tree. He almost couldn’t believe it.

He watched until a piece of paper landed on his lap.

It read: MERRY CHRISTMAS ERVAN. KEEP IT UP!

My Road to Taekwondo Black Belt

Hi my name is Srisa Bhatta, and I would like to tell you about taekwondo, the sport that I have been do-ing for last two years.

Taekwondo started in South Korea around 935 A.D. The first marshal artists started to defend themselves from invading enemies, and later it took the form of a sport around 1950.

When I first start taking taekwondo at the White Ti-ger I was not sure if I really wanted to take the lesson. But later after few classes I found out that the teach-ers were very nice, helpful and gave special help if needed. We sometimes played games and took parts on special events like city parade or camp outs etc. Some parents also took lessons with their kids that made them feel more comfortable.

Our class always begins with meditation to gather all of our thoughts. Before we start to do all the kicks and forms we had to stretch to make our bodies flex-ible. We then run around the mats to get warmed up. Then we start learning about different types of kicks

and poomsayes [forms we had to learn to get our next belt]. They also have a variety of classes to do like self-defense, sparring, forms, board breaking etc.

There are a lot of taekwondo schools in the U.S. but I think that White Tiger School is the best. They have a big and spacious training area, a track that you could run on, and the instructors are really friendly and helpful. The instructors also give you special help with one on one training. You have to have three stripes on your current belt to test for your next belt. The first stripe means you have half of your poomsay memo-rized; the second means you have all of it down, and third mean you know your self-defense.

Three building blocks of Taekwondo are mind, body and eye focus. Taekwondo lessons are im-portant to me because it teaches me important life skills and to be more organized. It helps me to con-centrate more on my studies and doing homework. So I am planning to get my black-belt in November 2013, wish me a luck.

Wright Brothers’ Invention

Many of us look up in the air sometimes wondering what is flying. It is an aircraft which consist of wings and is powered by propellers of jet which made our life more flexible. The following research is about the history of Wright Brothers’ invention. The purpose of my research is about what Wright Brothers did and invented in order to come out with a brilliant idea to make a plane. It definitely sounds like huge deal, which totally is.

The very first manned flight was on December 17th, 1903. It was the first successful, piloted flight in history. Before they flew the plane, they made a movable track which would help them launch the plane. The first flight lasted for 12 seconds and cov-ered 120 feet. The same day, three more flights were made that day which lasted around 59 seconds and distance of 852 feet. That sounds startling the fact that they made three more planes that day. This en-tire event occurred above a wind-swept beach in North Carolina.

Now let’s talk about how they invented and what materials they used to invent the flyer. In 1902, they flew plentiful amounts of flight or test glides by us-ing their new glider. According to their research and studies, the movable tail helped to balance the air-craft. So, they just connected the movable tail to the wing-warping wires to coordinate turns. After a suc-cessful glides to check their wind tunnel test, invent-ers planned to make/build a powered aircraft. They also used lots of other accessories in the aircraft. They used spruce wood from the frame and the wings of the plane and muslin fabric cloth to wrap the wings, wire in order to maintain and control wing turns, and bicycle tubing for places that needed reinforce-ments. After they made their first powered flights in 1903, they begin to develop their experimental air-craft into marketable product.

Talking about types of flights, there weren’t that many types compared to now. In this article, we are going to talk was about two different flights; U.S Army flights and the first armed flight. The U.S gov-ernment needed an aircraft as well. Wright Brothers’ invention came in handy even though there weren’t

any other flights. In July 30th 1909, right after the fa-tal crash, the U.S government bought its first airplane, the Wright Brothers’ biplane. The airplane was sold for $25,000 and $5000 bonus because the plane ex-ceeded 40mph. The First Armed Flight, in, 1912, was flown with a machine gun at an airport in College Park, Maryland. The airport appeared after they sold the flight to the U.S government. The Wright Brothers’ taught the US Army how to fly the armed plane.

In 1911, Vin Fiz was the first plane to cross the Unit-ed States of America. The name Vin Fiz was given after a grape soda made by the Armour Packing Company. The flight stopped 70 times and it took 84 days. The flight crash landed so many times that when it came back to California, only few original parts of the plane were left.

After they were done building and making planes, now it was time to show the invention to the world. This is the time when the Wright Brothers’ were of-fering airplanes to various countries out there. Some countries turned them down where as U.S Army and the French asked for an airplane capable of carrying a passenger. Officially, this is when Orville and Wilbur got famous and many people started copying them. They also started having businesses with other places. The aircraft business was uncertain and dangerous. It was certainly like a show that people wanted to watch.

At times, they had many troubles with their plane. One day Orville was flying a plane at an altitude of 150 feet high. Suddenly a propeller fell of the plane while flying. The plane was totally out of control. Luck-ily, nothing happened to him and he made it out alive.

From 1910-1915, many incidences occurred. Orville flew the plane for 6 months as his passenger died in a plane crash while he had survived. Unfortunately, Orville’s brother Wilbur died of typhoid fever. In 1915, after Wilbur’s death, Orville sold the company.

Overall, the Wright Brothers put their determination on their work and became very successful. Their hard works made our lives much easier to travel from one place to another.
