Sandra Bem’s Gender Role Orientation:
Personal BackgroundSandra Ruth Lipsitz Bem is
an American psychologist born in June 22, 1944 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to a working class Jewish family. Her mother taught her to reach her fullest potentials as a woman and not just be a wife.

She attended Margaret Morrison Carnegie College, now known as Carnegie-Mellon University and majored in psychology.

Education & CareerSubsequently, she entered
the University of Michigan, made a study about children behavior and obtained her Ph.D. in 1968. After having her doctorate degree, she was hired as a full-time professor in Carnegie-Mellon.

After three years, she transferred to Stanford University and finally got a tenured teaching position at Cornell University where she met her husband, Daryl Bem.

works in androgyny, an attribute of having both male and female roles and/or orientation. In order to test one’s masculinity or femininity, she invented the Bem Sex Role Inventory (BSRI).
