From pig roasts to Butch Cassidy to Territorial Spies—KATE NELSONOutlaws, Rough Riders, classic restaurants and apossible spy will come to life at the 2012 NewMexico Statehood History Conference, May 3 to5, in Santa Fe. Presented by the Historical Societyof New Mexico and the New Mexico History Mu-seum/Palace of the Governors, this Centennialversion of the Society’s annual conference in-cludes a special treat: a daylong free symposium, open to the public, plus free admission to the His-tory Museum on May 3.
The conference, May 4 and 5 at the Santa FeConvention and Visitors Center, is held in collab-oration with the New Mexico Heritage Preserva-tion Alliance, which is having its annualconference at La Posada that weekend. Details, including special hotel rates and how to registerfor all or part of the Statehood History Confer-ence, are at the Historical Society’s web site:www.hsnm.org/2012%20Items/home__2012_con-ference.htm.
“Whether you’re interested in the Centennial orNew Mexico history in general, we’re gatheringwriters and historians you’ll enjoy meeting andwhose research is sure to enlighten you,” saidMike Stevenson, president of the Historical Socie-ty. “Holding this year’s event in the capital city, where lawmakers worked so hard to move theTerritory toward statehood, means we’ll be sur-rounded by history indoors at the sessions andoutdoors strolling the streets of Santa Fe.”
The symposium’s keynote address, "New Mexi-co Statehood, an Earlier Perception," will be givenby Dr. Robert W. Larson, author of the authorita-tive and classic New Mexico's Quest for State-hood, 1846-1912. Other speakers include Dr.David Van Holtby, "New Mexico's Rough Road toStatehood," Robert Torrez, "Law and Order and
the Quest for New Mexico Statehood," and Henri-etta Martinez Christmas, "New Mexico's Icons."Dr. Richard Melzer will introduce and moderatethe symposium. (Seating in the museum’s audito-rium is limited; first-come first-served.)
The statehood theme continues May 4 and 5 atthe Society’s conference, with topics ranging fromtraditional foods in Native American communi-ties, land-grant studies, Western characters likeKit Carson and Wyatt Earp, and controversialNew Mexico politicos such as Thomas BentonCatron, Bronson Cutting, and New Mexico’s firstTerritorial Governor (and possible U.S. spy)James S. Calhoun. The conference’s twenty foursessions and nearly seventy presentations in-clude:
• “Juan Dominguez de Mendoza: Soldier andFrontiersman of Seventeenth-Century New Mexi-co,” by historians Marc Simmons and José Anto-nio Esquibel
• “The Changing Character of New MexicoStatehood as Reflected by the Santa Fe Fiesta Cel-ebration,” by Andrew Lovato, assistant professorof speech communications at Santa Fe Communi-ty College.
• “Butch Cassidy in New Mexico: His WinningWays, Dancing Feet, and Postmortem Return,” byfree-lance writer Nancy Coggeshall.
• “U.S. Army Nurses at Fort Bayard,” by Cecil-ia Jensen Bell, a researcher with the Fort BayardHistorical Preservation Society.
• “La Matanza: Conserving Identity throughFood in Los Lunas,” by Daniel Valverde, an an-thropology student at New Mexico State Univer-sity.
The New Mexico History Museum is at 113 Lincoln Avenue, in Santa Fe, NM, it is a divisionof the Department of Cultural Affairs.
