Thiswould cause morehome owners to besaddled with mort-gages that are largerthan their property’svalue, which wouldlead to even moreforeclosures andplace even moredownward pressureon home prices.Seniors looking touse the proceedsfrom the sale of theirhome to relocate to adifferent part of thecountry, to move into

a retirementcommunity,to help de-fray healthcare costsor to fundother long-

term obliga-tions would find they

have a much smallerretirement nest eggthan they’d plannedon. They may beforced to keep work-ing for many moreyears, or to postponeor cancel moving to anew home becausethey can’t afford orare unable to sell theircurrent home.Changing the rulesnow by eliminating orcurtailing the deduc-tion would be unfair. Itwould take money outof the pockets ofthose home buyers
