Building or buyingyour home is an excit-ing time for you andyour family. Beforeyou are able to enjoyyour new home thereis one final challenge:The Dreaded Move… You can save valu-
able time and a con-siderable amount ofmoney by planningproperly for yourmove. 1. Clean House!
The first rule of mov-ing is to get rid of un-
necessary clutter be-fore you go. That way,you won't have to finda place for thoserarely-used itemswhen you get to yournew home. Host agarage sale or donategoods to a local char-ity. 2. Get Organized.
Two months beforeyour move, keep trackof all your mail andmake a list of people, subscriptions, and or-ganizations that
should be notified ofyour changing ad-dress. Don't forgetabout your bank, yourinsurance agent, yourdoctor, and your vet.Just before yourmove, contact thepostal service for achange of addressform. 3. Cancel and Re-order. Make anotherlist that includes all thecontact information foryour utility serviceproviders (telephone, gas, electric, water, cable, and Internet ac-cess). To save evenmore time, you cantransfer your utilitiesonline. Remember tocontact your pest con-trol, lawn care, win-dow cleaning andother services to letthem know about yourmove. Proper plan-ning insures that youwon't be paying forservices you're notusing! 4. Be "MoverFriendly". If you're
using a pro-fessionalmovingcom-pany,makeyourselfavailable toanswer questions onboth ends of the move- loading and unload-ing. Review the homeinventory paperworkand make sure thedriver has your con-tact information anddetails of your deliv-ery. 5. Be safe.Whether
you're hiring profes-sionals or movingyourself, remove allrugs, low hangingitems, and trippinghazards. Keep walk-ways clear at all times.Arrange for someoneto take care of yourchildren and petswhile everything isbeing packed andloaded onto the mov-ing truck. 6. Know what you'repacking. Label boxes
in detail, in-cludingcontentsand theroom inwhich
they be-long. This will
save time and ques-tions for you and yourmovers. 7. Pack an Essen-tials Box.When youarrive at your new resi-dence, your essentialsbox will be first thingyou unpack. Make adetailed list and packaccordingly. 8. Know what NOTto pack. Charcoallighter fluid, pesticidesand paint thinner are afew of the items thatprofessional movingcompanies won'ttouch. Make arrange-ments to transportthese items or leavethem with a neighbor.Valuables such ascash, jewelry and im-portant documentsshould stay with youor be shipped via
trackable shippingservice. 9. Check and dou-ble check. Before themoving van leaves, make sure everythingis loaded or unloaded- on both ends of yourmove. Check the attic, basement, closets, and garage for thingsyou may have forgot-ten. If something isdamaged during themove, notify yourmoving company im-mediately and takephotographs of thedamaged item. Re-view your home inven-tory before the movingcompany leaves. 10. Keep smiling!
Moving can be man-ageable, with the rightattitude and thoughtfulpreparation. It will allbe over soon - andyou'll have days, weeks or even monthsto unpack at yourleisure. Throw yourselfa housewarming partyand meet your newneighbors.

FRIDAY, DECEMBER 24, 2010 THE PILOT — SOUTHERN PINES, N.C. PAGE D5
By Victoria Spannaus Wells Fargo Home Mortgage
Although buying ahome is the largestinvestment most peo-ple will ever make, the decision doesn’thave to be as daunt-ing as it may seem.Since the kitchen isthe hub of a homefor most of us, itserves as an ideal“buying guide” whenshopping for a home.Remember too thatremodeling a bed-room usually involveschanging the wallcolor, drapes, andbedspread. Remod-eling a kitchen is al-most always a muchmore extensive —and expensive—project. While kitchens de-serve special atten-tion when choosing anew home, they havemany aspects not al-ways visible with aquick glance. Hereare some simpleguidelines to helpyou compare.First, test-drive thekitchen:• Open and closethe drawers severaltimes to see if theyoperate smoothly.
• Open the wall andbase cabinets tocheck that the hingesare secure. Also lookfor storage amenitiessuch as pullout traysand drawer organiz-ers.• Examine the thick-ness of the wood onthe drawers and cab-inets, as well as thefinish. You want to besure they’ll stand upto years of use andcleaning.Next, ask yourselfthese questions:• Do I like the lay-out? Most expertsagree that the sink, stove, and refrigera-tor should be placedin a triangle layout forthe greatest effi-ciency, but you mayprefer an alternatedesign.• Does the kitchenmake it easy to en-tertain and interactwith family and
guests? Or is it land-locked with no viewto surroundingrooms?• Does the kitchenmake me feel goodwhen I’m in it? You’llprobably spend moretime in the kitchenthan any other roomin the house, so itshould make you feel“at home.”For a free consulta-
tion to discuss whichtype of mortgage loanwill work best for you, call Victoria Spannausat Wells Fargo HomeMortgage at (800)741-7813 or 910-692-6225.

OLD TOWN WATERFRONT
(ARA) - For many, the new year means afresh start and there isno better place tobegin than inside thehome. Your home ismeant to last, but overtime, simple wear andtear can result in inef-ficient systems andless-than-perfect con-ditions.To keep your home
looking and operatinglike the day you pur-chased it, Ace Hard-ware's home expert,Lou Manfredini, sug-gests a few easymaintenance projectsthat will make a bigimpact in the end.Give your base-
boards the protectionthey needWhile adding a new
coat of paint to yourwalls is always a goodidea when maintainingyour home, Manfredinialso recommends youfreshen up your base-boards, which oftensee the most wearand tear. Wash themdown using a pine-based cleaner, a littlebit of warm water anda sponge to removedirt and grime. Thentouch up your base-boards with paint toprotect them andkeep them lookingbrand new. Paint likeAce's Cabinet, Doorand Trim Enamel iswashable and scratchresistant so it canwithstand any busyhome.Save thousands with
a little bit of caulkOver time the exces-
sive use of a bathtubor shower can lead tocracks in your groutand caulking. These
cracks are not onlyunsightly, but cancause greater leakageproblems costing youthousands of dollars ifnot fixed immediately. The good news is
this problem can beresolved easily and in-expensively. Manfre-dini recommendsusing silicone-basedcaulk, which ensuresa fast-drying, smoothsurface and creates astrong seal to preventleakage. Start by peel-ing away the old caulkand making sure thesurface is completelydry before re-apply-ing. One of his fa-vorites is G.E'sSilicone II Kitchen &Bath Caulk.Become your own

Not only arethese items harmful toyour health, they willwear down your car-peting ... and do soquickly. While itsgood practice to vac-uum on a weeklybasis, cleaning yourcarpeting every 90 to120 days will give youa cleaner home andprolong the life of yourcarpeting. Hiring aprofessional can beexpensive, so Manfre-dini suggests youstop by your localhardware store to renta carpet cleaning sys-tem for a fraction ofthe cost of having thework done profession-ally.
Make sure the airyou breathe is thebestAnyone with aller-
gies knows that airquality is very impor-tant. This applies in-side the home asmuch as outside. A great way to pre-
vent bad air circulat-ing in your home -and make sure yourequipment is runningefficiently - is by re-placing the air filters inyour forced-air fur-nace. Manfredini rec-ommends usingpleated filters becausethey do a better job offiltering internal air. These filters are inex-pensive and takeabout five minutes toreplace.Keep your gutters
free of clutterClearing your gutters
is the link to a dryhome and it's impor-tant to clean them outat least twice a year. There are a number ofoptions on the marketthat make the job eas-ier. The Smart Screen5 inch Aluminum Gut-ter Screen is a goodoption because it at-taches to the front ofthe gutter, providing apermanent barrier tokeep leaves, pine nee-dles, debris, ice andsnow from clogging.Another leaf blockingoption is a flexiblefoam insert thatblocks leaves and de-bris.
