San’s Martial Arts
240 Colonial Way, Rising Sun, MD 21911 (410) 214-2100 www.SansMartialArts.com
Thank you for choosing San’s Martial Arts. The intent of this manual is to help you and your child under-
stand the curriculum and expectations we have set in place for their advancement. Please understand that in
many situations your child will be exposed to other skills and know more than what is required for their pro-
motion. These guidelines represent “minimums” that they are required to know.
Please use this guide to help your child study. It is a reality that some of these skills are challenging. With-
out some practice at home, your child may take longer to promote. Remember that “Repetition is the
mother of skill”. It is my hope that we can work together, like the three points of a triangle, to enrich every-
one’s experience to its fullest. My view is that Karate should be fun at this age. Our program is not intended
to be a “military boot camp”. That being said, I do want our children to develop skills that will help them to
defend themselves, become healthier and become better people by learning how to interact with others in a
positive manner.
Children start at Tiny Tiger Level 1. If your child’s attendance is consistent, and they can demonstrate the
techniques required, they will promote every eight weeks (Roughly). All children will not advance at the
same rate, nor do they need to. The Martial Arts is about “individual achievement through group effort”. I
am in no hurry to promote anyone. I will let you know if I feel that they are ready. This schedule allows for
a child that is 4 ½ years old to attend for a year and a half and then move into the “Little San’s” class. Time
put in will be considered and applied toward possible promotion in that class. Depending on the amount of
time spent in the Tiny Tiger Class, they will typically (and automatically) be promoted to Yellow belt or Or-
ange belt upon entering the “Little San’s” class.
Promotional testing costs $15. This covers the cost of their certificate and belt. If they fail to perform an
area of the test adequately, they will not be promoted until they successfully demonstrate that portion of the
test.
Please Note: It is not necessary to complete the Tiny Tiger class to advance into the 6-8 year old “Little
San’s” class. Advancement is solely based on age and maturity.
