Congratulations!

Student of the Month:

Colleen H.

“Colleen (Colie) H. is a student in my block

Math Tech 1 course. It is with great excitement

that I nominate her as Student of the Month. She

is an excellent student! Colie jumped right into

the class and has worked extremely hard since

day one. She has turned in all work on time, and

done very well on all quizzes and tests. She cur-

rently has an “A” in the class, which is not easy to

do given the fast-paced nature of a block

course. Colie not only attends Class Connect

sessions regularly, but actively participates in

class by answering questions. In addition, she

communicates regularly via kmail to ask ques-

tions. I am extremely proud of the work that Co-

lie has done and applaud her for the effort she

puts forth daily. It is a privilege to have such an

incredible student in my class!”

-Mrs. Dowling

SCVCS is proud to recognize

two students monthly for attain-

ing Student of the Month status:

one student for overall Student

of the Month and one for Most

Improved Student. SCVCS

teachers and advisors recom-

mend students for this honor.

Each month we will have vari-

ous prizes for our winners! This

month we will be sending out a

certificate to each student

nominated and our winners will

receive a $10 Target gift certifi-

cate.

Congratulations to all of our

nominees and winners!

High School Edition

Are you in your 3rd year of high school? If so, mark your calendars for

the new South Carolina state mandated assessment!

The ACT and Work Keys will be administered on April 28th (ACT) and

April 29th (Work Keys) at ten sites across the state. All students who are

in their third year of high school, regardless of grade classification,

are required to test.

This is a great opportunity for each of you to take a test for free that

would normally cost you between $40 and $60 per test. These test re-

sults will also provide you with much more information regarding col-

lege or work force readiness than any other test previously adminis-

tered by the State of South Carolina.

More information will be coming to you from your teachers and your

advisor. Mark your calendar to be prepared for this opportunity!

Marianna Sawyer, a ballet dancer, loves dancing and has been enjoy-

ing this form of expression since four years old. Marianna says, “To be a

ballerina you have to be smart and well versed in the dance world. The

most well rounded ballerinas not only do ballet, but also modern, contem-

porary, jazz or other types of dance.” Just knowing Marianna’s rigorous

daily schedule provides a glimpse into how committed she is to perfecting

her ballet skills. She says, “Ballet takes up the majority of my life. I dance

five to seven days a week, every week. My schedule is from 10:00 a.m. to

3:00 p.m., so about five hours a day on weekdays and six to seven hours

on Saturdays.” As the youngest trainee in the Carolina Ballet Theatre’s

(CBT) company Marianna is also an advocate for community service. Ma-

rianna says, “I also do community outreach with CBT and teach hip-hop

jazz to elementary school-aged children.” As a former student with The

Governor’s School for the Arts

and Humanities Marianna was

able to receive professional

guidance and training from

world-renowned instructors in

order to perfect her craft. Not

only is regular practice a re-

quirement for becoming an ex-

cellent ballet dancer but aca-

demics are very important as

well. She says, “Most of the

dancers in my life are brilliant

and very successful. Many

have gone to amazing colleges

and continue to dance in their

free time. Academics are very

important, even for artists.” If

you’re an aspiring dancer Mari-

anna has several tips to help

you along the way, “First and

foremost, be safe, be healthy,

stay positive, be open to criti-

cism, and as always, never give

up!”

Issue 4, 2014-2015 March 2015

Caroline Worthy has been involved with singing and playing music since she was a young child. She be-

gan singing with the Lawson Academy at the age of seven with Suzanne Brown and the Palmetto Children’s

Choirsters, and taking group voice lessons. Much of Caroline’s inspiration to pursue music came from her broth-

er and sister, who are also gifted musicians. She joined her elementary school orchestra as a viola player, and

later she began to study piano to enhance her music expertise. Some of the honors Caroline has garnered on

her music journey are: participating in the gifted and talented Music Visions and the SC State Choir, attending

CME with the Palmetto Children’s Choir, and being chosen for Honors Chorus through her school. She has re-

ceived superior ratings in Junior Festival, and won Best Performer for voice and piano. Caroline currently holds

the fourth highest scholarship from Lawson Academy, and she has been selected for the Shining Stars program

at the institution. Recently Caroline was accepted into the Converse College Music Education program, and

she is currently auditioning for a music scholarship there.

Through her experiences, Caroline has learned that being a singer/musician involves a great deal of commit-

ment. Watching her siblings perform and seeing their exhilaration on stage has motivated her to persevere in

her music studies. She says, “Seeing their happiness on stage made me really want to experience that feeling

of being on stage and showing off the talents I work hard for.” Caroline views herself as somewhat of an intro-

vert, and she believes that performing on stage has helped her overcome much of her shyness.

Caroline spends a lot of time preparing for her music performances. She explains, “I prepare for performances

and auditions months in advance to ensure I have everything memorized and have proper diction.” She notes

that one of the challenges of performing is that there is much room for error, especially in the foreign language

pieces. In addition to memorizing the words and correct pronunciations, Caroline must focus on the technical

elements of making music. “Runs and trills are difficult and are found in most classical music, but they are the

most satisfying and beautiful.” She usually has two recitals for voice and two recitals for piano each year. Since

she is a top scholarship holder at Lawson, she is also chosen by the academy to perform at various other events

throughout the year. Caroline loves everything about singing and playing the piano. She states, “What I love

most about performing is that I get out of my shell and relax while showing off something I’m great at.”

As far as reaching out to those who desire to become singers and musicians, Caroline feels that it is important to

“encourage them to follow their dreams of becoming something great.” She feels indebted to fellow classical

vocalists and teachers for giving her the support she needed in order to be successful in her musical endeavors.

For students interested in singing and playing music

Caroline has the following suggestions for getting

started. “1) Don’t be afraid to show off your voice

to your instructor. It took me years to actually

come out of my shell and show my instructors what

I have. 2) Practice, practice, practice. There’s

nothing worse than not being prepared for a per-

formance. 3) It’s okay to mess up. Learning from

your mistakes helps you better yourself as a per-

former. 4) If you want to be a classical vocalist, like

myself, learn piano as soon as possible. It will defi-

nitely help you in the long run. 5) Get rid of that

stage fright and belt it out! Well, only belt if the

song calls for it, but you get what I mean.”
