* * *Biyaheng Pinoy umaariba

kanyang kampanya angkanyang bayaw at pamangkinupang mas lalo pang palakasinang kanyang kampanya.

Aquino at Estrada.

Kanya-kanya ngpagtatanggol at pagbibida ngsariling manok.

CABRAL VERUS CHURCHIN ‘CONDOM’ DEBATE

Health Secretary Esperanza Cabral yesterday accepted the challenge of twoCatholic bishops to a debate on the use of condoms to prevent the spread ofdisease and the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).

But before accepting the challenge, Cabralsaid he wanted the ground rules set firstclaiming she does not want the debate to re-volve around religious beliefs.

The Department of Health chief said if thedebate is a question of faith, she will notdebate religious beliefs with the Church of-ficials because everybody should respect eachother's faith.

Cabral would also not debate with Churchofficials if they would dwell on the functionof the Church in relation to the State becausethe Constitution states the separation ofChurch and the State.

On the other hand, Cabral said there isnot much point debating about facts already

published in scientific journals. She said she wants to find out first the

terms of reference for the debate so she canpresent her arguments properly.

In a related development, the NationalPress Club expressed its willingness to hostthe debate through its "Meet the Press" Fo-rum.

Last weekend, Lipa (Batangas) ArchbishopRamon Arguelles and Caloocan BishopDeogracias Iñiguez Jr. challenged Cabral toa debate on the effectiveness of condoms inpreventing the spread of HIV and AIDS.

The bishops have been attacking Cabralsince the DOH distributed condoms onValentine's Day.

kami naghiwalay, e,”sabi ni Angelica.

Ayon naman kayDerek, “All relation-ships have prob-lems and... youknow, Angel and Ihad some problems. Not third party, notyung pagseselos. Not anything likethat.”

Karamihan nginterview ay puro saside ni Derek. Atinamin nga nito nakapwa nilakailangan ni An-gelica ng oras parasa sarili nila at paramakapag-isip. Peronaayos din namanang lahat mataposnilang makapag-usap.

IF there's any truth in the saying No Man is an Island, it shouldbe in business.

In simple economics, there should be a demand for products frombuyers which sellers need to fulfill. But reality most of the timedefies economics as there are competitors that could put anyone outof business in a blink of an eye. Big companies seem to have noproblem keeping their customers because their sheer size reflectsstrength and dependability.

But small and medium enterprises (SMEs) still have a fightingchance to succeed in the business arena-they should just get theright partner. This is where maverick telecommunications' com-pany Bayan Telecommunications (Bayan) comes in, armed with theirnew and improved directions for Bayan Business, its business solu-tions arm.

"Ever since Bayan Business started, we used to cater only to topbusinesses," explains Chito Franco, Bayan's VP for Bayan Business."But we believe that it is time for us to expand and reach out to themajority of business owners in the country and offer them top-levelcommunications solutions and customer service."

Mr. Franco furthers that this prompted Bayan Business to im-prove its thrust highlighted in their new campaign that boldly statesthat Every Business is Big Business. "We are extending our exper-tise and experience in business with Filipino entrepreneurs-rein-forcing our commitment to serving businesses of any size with thesame attention and level of account management".

"We intend to leverage on Bayan's recently upgraded nationwidebackbone & infrastructure to provide the right connections to morebusinesses across the country."

Bayan Business now provides business solution packages thatare custom-fit to SMEs with dedicated account managers to ensurethat SMEs can rely on personal account management, far better thanimpersonal call center support given by most providers.

First standardized testfor BPO hiring launched

BUSINESS processing outsource (BPO)companies can now expect a faster and moreefficient recruitment process while applicantscan expect the same in finding a job as Busi-ness Processing Association of the Philip-pines (BPA/P) launched the first national stan-dardized testing program for BPO job appli-cants.

The program is tagged as the BPA/P Na-tional Competency Test (BNCT), an indus-try-initiated assessment program toproactively generate industry-ready talentsfor the Philippine BPO industry.

BPAP, with test provider AssessmentAnalytics, is supported by the Commissionon Information and Communications Tech-nology in the BNCT program.

The BNCT is a test similar to the NationalCollege Entrance Examination, which stan-dardizes the assessment grading and quali-fication assessment system for job applicantsin the BPO sector.

With the BNCT, students will be tested onbasic skills, such as English proficiency, com-puter literacy, perceptual speed and accuracyand learning ability.

They will be given a grade for each com-petency. It would be left to the individual com-panies to determine the competency levelacceptable for their respective companies.

The BNCT will also guide students aspir-ing to get a job in the BPO industry on thespecific competencies they need to improveon.

Developing a standard assessment frame-work for trainers and students will improvethe suitability of the applicants entering theindustry.

Our Daily BreadOur Daily BreadOur Daily BreadOur Daily BreadOur Daily BreadWilliam Adams (1564–1620) is believed to be the

first Englishman to reach Japan. Taking a liking toAdams, the ruling Japanese shogun made him his in-terpreter and personal advisor concerning the West-ern powers. Eventually, Adams was presented withtwo swords with rank of a Samurai. This showedjust how much the Japanese revered Adams. BecauseWilliam Adams served his foreign king well, he wasalso rewarded with greater opportunity for influence.

Centuries earlier, another man in a foreign countryalso had great influence over his king. Nehemiah wasa cupbearer to Persian King Artaxerxes (Neh. 1:11).In the royal court, the cupbearer would test the winebefore it was given to the king to protect him frompoisoning. But this position also meant he had theking’s ear as a trusted advisor. Nehemiah’s integrity, administrative gifts, and wisdom made him a confi-dant to his ruler, which paved the way for the re-building of the walls of Jerusalem.

Like Nehemiah, each of us has been given a uniquesphere of influence. Raising children, church or com-munity work, and employment all provide a platformwhere we can have a beneficial effect on others. Hasthe Lord placed someone in your life upon whom youcan have an influence? — Dennis Fisher

Purge list of ‘zombie’ voters,Nograles tells poll body

THE Commission on Elec-tions (Comelec) has denied thebribery allegations of a lawyerrepresenting a congressionalcandidate in Palawan provincewho is facing a disqualifica-tion case before the poll body.

Comelec Chairman JoseMelo said there is no need tobribe commissioners to dis-qualify someone.

“Komo hindi kagustuhan moang nangyari, na-bribe na anggumawa noon, that’s not cor-rect,” he said.

The accusation of briberycame from FerdinandTopacio, lawyer of PalawanGovernor Joel T. Reyes, whois seeking a congressional

seat in the May 10 elections, and his wife, Clara “Fems”E. Reyes, who is running forvice-governor. Both are fac-ing disqualification casesbefore the Comelec second di-vision.

Topacio claimed there are“talks” that some candidateshave resorted to bribingComelec commissioners todisqualify their opponents inthe elections. He said he hadwritten Melo about this.

Melo said Topacio mustfirst file a formal complaintwith the Comelec so thatthey can look into the mat-ter.

Reyes is running under the

Liberal Party (LP) supposedlywith Palawan Second DistrictRepresentative AbrahamKhalil Mitra, who was earlierdisqualified by the Comelecfirst division from because ofresidency issues.

Aside from Mitra, fellowLP bet Richard Gomez wasbarred by the same divisionfrom seeking a congressionalseat in Ormoc, Leyte also dueto residency issues.

Reacting on Topacio’s al-legation, Comelec Commis-sioner Gregorio Larrazabal, head of the first body’s firstdivision, said some peoplejust find it “convenient” toblame others for their mistakes.

Believe it or not, Comelec execs nix bribe money

VETERANS BANK LUCENA BRANCH INAUGURATIONPhilippine Veterans Bank (PVB) recently inaugurated its new branch in Lucenalocated at the CAP Building, C.T. Profugo corner Granja Street, Barangay V,Poblacion, Lucena City. PVB Lucena Branch started operating last June 2009together with PVB San Fernando, Pampanga and PVB Tarlac. PVB now has 60branches nationwide, including the 10 new branches that were opened simulta-neously last January 18, 2010. Gracing the ribbon-cutting ceremonies were (l-r):PVB Director Eduardo Pilapil, Quezon Governor Rafael Nantes, PVB EVP andBranch Banking Group Head Jesus Vicente Garcia, Quezon Provincial Board Mem-ber Romano Talaga, and PVB President and CEO Ricardo Balbido, Jr.

SPEAKER Prospero C.Nograles yesterday said the Com-mission on Elections should purgeall its “multiple and zombie reg-istrants.”

He warned that the House ofRepresentatives, which is man-dated by the Omnibus ElectionCode to act as Board of Can-vassers for the election of Presi-dent and Vice-President, mightbe locked in a protracted debatethat could lead to what the pub-lic fears most: a failure of elec-tions.

Nograles said he agreed withthe observation of both majorityand minority congressmen thatthe big number of multiple andzombie registrants which is esti-mates at around 3 million to 5million votes can make and un-make candidates running for lo-cal and national positions, espe-

cially those running for Presidentand Vice-President.

” I fully subscribe with theobservation of congressmen thatthis decision of the Comelec tosimply put up a watchlist to checkthese multiple registrants andzombie registrants is an invita-tion to civil chaos,” he said

Nograles said questionableelection results in the nationallevel might not only delay theproclamation of winners butmight also trigger civil unrest.

Nograles said the discovery inDavao City of alist of multipleregistrants include the sister, son, relatives and key political alliesof Mayor Rodrigo Duterte who isfielding his daughter Sara againsthim in the mayoralty race is veryalarming as this could be the casein many areas around the coun-try as well. Metro sizzles as summer peaksTHE weather bureau said ex-

tremely high temperature posesthreat of heatstroke, or worse, heatwave in the coming days asthe summer season is just start-ing to gain momentum.

Nathaniel Cruz, PhilippineAtmospheric, Geophysical andAstronomical Services Admin-istration (Pagasa) deputy direc-tor for operations and services, said that a weather as hot asthis is normally experiencedaround April when summer isat its peak.

Cruz explained that the pres-ence of high pressure area (HPA),aggravated by the prevailing ElNiño, triggers the warm and hu-

mid weather. These, and the early termina-

tion of northeast monsoon, willmake climate unbearable in thenext three to four months.

The Pagasa earlier announcedthat El Niño conditions could lastup until months of June or July.

Heatwave is also possible, ifsweltering heat continues forfive consecutive days, hence theagency advises the public toprepare precautionary mea-sures.

Cruz also advised the publicto maintain proper ventilation intheir homes, keeping sufficientdrinking water and wearingsummer clothes.

Schumacher is stillF1 crowd drawer

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia - Ma-laysian Grand Prix organizers hope toattract more than 100,000 spectatorsto next month's Formula One race withrenewed interest following the returnof seven-time world champion MichaelSchumacher.

Ticket sales dropped sharply lastyear amid the global economic crisis, attracting only 80,000 spectators com-pared to about 120,000 in 2008.

But the local economy is rebound-ing and Schumacher's return after threeyears of retirement has set the stagefor one of the most anticipated titleduels in Formula One, MokhzaniMahathir, chairman of organizerSepang International Circuit said Mon-day.

The return of the Lotus brand after16 years, backed by the Malaysian gov-ernment and businessmen, adds to theexcitement of the new season,Mokhzani said. In addition, nationaloil company Petronas has also becomethe title sponsor of Schumacher'sMercedes GP team.

"We hope to achieve more than100,000 (spectators) this year. With Lo-tus, Mercedes and the return ofSchumacher, we are seeing renewedinterest in F1," Mokhzani said.
