For one day only, Campbelltown Arts Centre will be hosting a special family event in the Japanese Gardens. The garden will be overflowing with free workshops and performances celebrating Campbelltown and Koshigaya, who generously donated the gardens and tea house. This free family event is set to include: origami, kirigami, kimono dress ups, games and a paper plane throwing contest. The event will also launch and conclude with taiko drumming and traditional dance performances. Children under the age of 12 must be accompanied by an adult. SCHEDULE OVERVIEW 11.30am - 12.00pm Opening speeches, taiko drumming and dance performances 12.00pm - 3.30pm Workshops 12.00pm - 3.30pm Paper plane throwing competition 3.30pm - 4.00pm Closing taiko drumming and dance performances WORKSHOPS OVERVIEW Origami & Kirigami Discover the history of Japanese paper crafts with origami paper folding and kirigami cutting techniques.s. Paper Planes Workshop & Competition Challenge yourself to build the perfect paper plane, then apply your new skills in a paper plane throwing competition. The winner of the competition will be awarded a $100 voucher to the Macarthur Square shopping centre at the closing event. The paper plane throwing competition is only eligible to children aged 12 years and younger. Shodo Calligraphy & Manga Learn step-by-step how to draw your own self-portrait or animal with manga artist Miyukiko. Then finish off your masterpiece with a Japanese word or signature, taught by Shodo calligraphy artist Ren Yano. Kimono & Kawaii Dress-ups Create an artistic accessory inspired by traditional and contemporary Japanese garments. Then complete the look by dressing up in an elegant Japanese kimono or a colourful kawaii outfit for a photo in the gardens. Taiko Drumming Experience the art of taiko – the ancient form of Japanese percussion in this high energy, hands-on workshop. Have fun dancing, moving and working together to create music using choreographed movements and drumming techniques with a variety of taiko drums. Bonsai Workshop Create your very own Bonsai miniature garden whilst learning about the amazing history behind this tradition. Shodo Calligraphy & Manga

PERFORMANCESDrumming Performance by Koji Hiraki 11.45am & 3.45pmTaiko is a form of percussion made internationally famous for its energetic and graceful drumming.

Koto Performance by Satsuki Odamura 2pm & 3.30pmThe koto is a traditional Japanese stringed musical instrument and is the national instrument of Japan. Satsuki was taught at the Sawai Koto School of Music in Tokyo, gaining her Shihan or master license in 1985.

Dancing Performance by Junko Hirabayashi 2.15pm A traditional Japanese Nihon-Buyo dance performance.

Calligraphy Performance by Ren Yano 11.45am‘Shodo’ is the ancient art of Japanese calligraphy and is a highly regarded demonstration of the connection between mind, body and spirit.
