SPARTANS HOLIDAY GIFT TO THE COMMUNITYIn the spirit of the season, the San José State women’s basketball team is inviting the entire com-munity of San Jose to its December 22 game against Sacramento State...FREE OF CHARGE! It’s the program’s gift to San Jose. Game time is at 2:00 p.m. in The Event Center.

OFFENSE...WE GOT OFFENSE...IT LEADS THE NATION!The Spartans are scoring at a 92.3 points per game clip, which is the highest scoring average in the nation. San José State is in rarefied air among the likes of No. 9 Baylor (91.8 ppg), No. 25 DePaul (89.6 ppg), No. 2 UConn (89.3 ppg) and No. 5 Notre Dame (89.1 ppg) in the top-5 in scoring. Against Columbia (11/16) the team set a program and conference record for points in a game, when they dropped 119 on the Lions, which is the fourth highest single-game point total in the NCAA this year.

CAN YOU HANDLE PRESSURE...SPARTANS 2ND IN THE NCAA IN TURNOVER MARGIN Through nine games the Spartans have shown an inkling of what their pressure defense is capable. SJSU has forced its opponents to turn the ball over 230 times and in those, made 120 steals. San José State made those opponent miscues pay off to the tune of a 254-112 advantage in points off turnovers. Nationally, the team ranks second in turnover margin at +11.89 and 12th in steals per game grabbing 13.0 per game.

SHARING IS CARING...SAN JOSE STATE RANKS 27TH NATIONALLY IN ASSISTSAt 16.9 assists per game the Spartans are ranked second in the Mountain West Conference and are 27th in the nation. Aniya Baker (So, PG, Perris, Calif.) leads the team with 4.9 assists per game, which is good for third among MW performers and 50th nationally. Chereese Thomas (Gr., PG, Dublin, Calif.) is also in the top-10 in the conference, seventh, at 3.2 assists per outing.

THREES ARE THERE FOR THE TAKING...SJSU IS 9TH IN THE NATION IN MADE 3-POINTERSSan José State is hitting an average of 9.0 shots from beyond the arc per game, which ranks ninth in the nation, but taking and hitting threes are nothing new under head coach Jamie Craighead.

With 245 made 3-pointers and 793 attempts, the 2013-14 Spartans shattered the program’s previ-ous marks in each category. The previous record of 146 3-pointers in the 27 games (1999-00) was equaled in just 20 games (at UNLV 1/29) last season. In addition, they passed the previous record for attempts in a season (493 in 29 games in 2000-01) in that same game.

Both marks set Mountain West Conference records as well.

Cunnigan (Sr., G, Winchester, Calif.) set a new San José State career free throw record. Cunnigan passed Cricket Williams (466 from 2001-04) to establish the new record 471...and counting. Cunnigan’s 471 made free throws are the record for the school (men’s or women’s program). She glided past the men’s record, Adrian Oliver’s 442 free throws from 2009-11, in the team’s win at UC Irvine (11/22).

CUNNIGAN NEARS SAN JOSÉ STATE SCORING RECORDSTa’Rea Cunnigan (Sr., G, Winchester, Calif.) ranks fourth on the program’s career scoring list with 1,655 points. She enters the game against Sacramento State 105 points behind all-time women’s scoring champion Karen Mason (1,760 points from 1978-81) and 112 behind Ricky Berry (1,767 points from 1986-88) for the school’s all-time record.

She is closing in on Elinor Banks (1,666 points from 1978-81) in third place on the program’s career scoring list. Just past Banks is Cricket Williams (1,672 points from 2001-04), who occupies second place. Then Cunnigan will begin a final assault on the women’s and then the school’s all-time records.

EVERYBODY BRINGS SOMETHING TO THE PARTY!In 2014-15, San José State is getting production up and down its lineup. Each of the 11 Spartans who have played in the first nine games are averaging double digit minutes. The bench has scored 310 of the team’s 831 points; 38% of the total production. In four of its nine games, all 11 have been in the scoring column and in four of the other five 9 players have scored.

CUNNIGAN ABOUT TO TAKE THE NEXT STEP UP IN ANOTHER CAREER CATEGORYIn addition to the scoring record, in which Ta’Rea Cunnigan (Sr., G, Winchester, Calif.) is 17 points from third place (Elinor Banks - 1,672) and 21 from second (Cricket Williams - 1,676), she is poised to move up a spot on three more career lists very shortly.

Cunnigan is two 3-pointers from Cricket Williams for sixth place on the 3-pointers made list.

With her steal at USF, she moved into fourth place on the all-time steals list (227) passing Kari Steele (226 from 1994-97). Finally, she passed Hulett Brooks (1,383 from 1990, 1992-94) for fifth place on the career field goal attempts. Cunnigan currently has attempted 1,394 shots in her Spartans career.

CUNNIGAN AMONG ACTIVE CAREER LEADERS IN THE NCAAAmong Division I women’s basketball players, Ta’Rea Cunnigan (Sr., G, Winchester, Calif.) ranks first in free throw attempts (636) and free throws made (471). She is sixth in steal average (2.28/g) and eighth in steals (226). Her 1,394 field goal attempts are 10th and she is the seventh leading scorer among active player with 1,655 career points.

SCOUTING SACRAMENTO STATEThe Hornets are a member of the Big Sky Conference, and come into their match up with San José State with an 2-8 record. In its last game, Sacramento State defeated the Utah State Aggies 102-922 in Sacramento.

Sac State is under the direction of second-year head coach Bunky Harkleroad. He brings a 19-20 record with the program into this game.

The Hornets have two players scoring in double figures. They are led by a senior point guard Fanta-sia Hilliard, who tops the squad in points (13.6/g), assists (3.9/g) and steals (2.3/g). Hallie Gennett, a sophomore forward, is averaging 12.6 ppg. Finally, sophomore forward Margaret Huntington leads the team at 6.1 rebounds per game.

This will be the 27th meeting between these programs, with Spartans holding an 14-12 lead in the all-time series. In games played in San Jose, SJSU holds 8-3 advantage, and have won each of the last five in The Event Center. The Hornets defeated the San José State in Sacramento last year 103-99.

WOODBERRY PICK UP RIGHT WHERE SHE LEFT OFF IN 2013-14 Rebecca Woodberry (Sr., F, Phoenix, Ariz.) finished the 2013-14 season as the 13th best 3-point shooter in the nation (3.1/g). Through six games of 2014-15 she is nearly on her pace from last year (2.5/g) and ranked 86th in the nation. She set a career-high with a 30-point outburst at Utah (11/14) to open the season and reached 500 career-point at San José State in the team’s win over Cincinnati (11/29).

The single-season record holder for 3-pointers (90 in 2013-14), Woodberry became the seventh player in program history to reach 100 made threes when she drained four at UC Riverside (11/20). She has made 102 3-pointers in 33-career games at San José State.

RECORDS GALORE FALL IN WIN OVER COLUMBIAThe Spartans set several records in 119-76 win over Columbia (11/16), mostly notably the 119 points. That’s both a team and Mountain West record. The previous team high was 103, which they clearly shattered. That had been achieved twice: in a 103-69 win over San Francisco State on Dec. 5, 1980, and a 103-80 win over Utah State on Jan. 12, 2013.

The Spartans also set school records with 42 free throws made and 53 free throw attempts. The teams combined for 69 made free throws, which is a Mountain West record. San Jose State’s 89 field goal attempts and 53 free throw attempts are No. 2 in Mountain West history. Finally, the combined 195 points, the Spartans’ 119 points and the free throws made and attempted totals are Event Center records and the field goals (35) and field goal attempts tied Event Center records....Whew!

COLUMBIA WAS A TEAM EFFORTIn the Spartans 119-76 win over Columbia, every player made a contribution to record setting performance. All 11 players were represented in the scoring column, led by Jasmine Smith (So., F, Burbank, Calif.) who scored 23 points. Ten grabbed a rebound with Myzhanique Ladd (Fr., G, Seattle, Wash.) and Paris Baird (So., F, Van Nuys, Calif.) paced the team with six each. Ten players dished out an assist with Aniya Baker (So., G, Perris, Calif.) toping the team with five and 10 players had steals with Smith leading the way with five. Oh, and every player sank at least one free throw. Nine of the 11 made more than one free throw and of those, none shots less than .625 from the charity stripe.

CUNNIGAN GLIDES PAST 1,500 CAREER POINTSEntering the 2014-15 season,Ta’Rea Cunnigan (Sr., G, Winchester, Calif.) stood at 1,495 career points. With an 18 point performance at Utah (11/14), she became the fourth player in San José State women’s basketball history to pass that milestone. Cunnigan has scored 1,523 points in just 92 games. Her next milestone comes at 1,666 points, when she reaches Elinor Banks (1978-81) for third place on the program’s all-time scoring list.

WHAT A HALF OF HOOPSSan José State is competing in its 41st season of women’s college basketball. In the second half of the game against Columbia the Spartans scored 64 points and launched 50 shots. Both are records San José State records for a half of basketball.

11IN...11 CONTRIBUTEAll 11 Spartans who were available to play, have seen action in both games this year. Nine played double digit minutes at Utah (11/14) and 10 did against Columbia (11/16) as Coach Craighead kept a steady rotation of fresh players coming into the game to keep the intensity at a constantly high pace. Every Spartan made a positive impact on the stat sheet, including four who scored in double figures, led by a career-high 30 points from Rebecca Woodberry (Sr., F, Phoenix, Ariz.).

IMPRESSIVE DEBUTSMyzhanique Ladd (Fr., G, Seattle, Wash.) and Aniya Baker (So., PG, Perris, Calif.) were impressive in their Spartan debuts. Ladd was 8-for-8 from the line and scored 15 points as well as played important minutes in crunch time at Utah (11/14). Baker also scored 15 points, including three 3-pointers, she dished out a team-high three assists and contributed two steals all while taking care of the ball handling duties.

WOODBERRY IS READYAt Utah (11/14), Rebecca Woodberry (Sr., F, Phoenix, Ariz.) served notice that she is ready for the 2014-15 season. She opened the campaign with a career-high 30 point outburst at Utah (11/14). She led the team in scoring, rebounds (8) and steals (4). The nation’s 13th leading 3-point shooter in 2013-14 (3.10/g) drained five-of-seven treys and hit 9-of-11 free throws.

WINS IN THE HOME OPENER NOT EVEN A 50-50 PROPOSITIONIn home openers since the 1977-78 season the Spartans are just 17-19. However, they have won their last two home openers, both against San Francisco State . Before this current streak, the last win in a home opener came in the 2005-06 season.

CUNNIGAN NAMED PRESEASON ALL-CONFERENCE BY MOUNTAIN WEST COACHESTa’Rea Cunnigan (Sr., G, Winchester, Calif.) is one of five players to be named the Mountain West Preseason All-Conference team by a vote of the conference’s head coaches. Cunnigan, averaged 18.4 points per game last year and is the leading scorer among all returning players in the Mountain West Conference this year. She led the team in scoring and steals and ranked second in blocks, assists, free throw percentage and 3-point percentage.

SEASON OPENERS A 50-50 PROPOSITIONSan José State has played 39 season openers and has split them right down the center - 20 wins and 19 losses. Only three of seven head coaches, Sharon Chatman (in 1976-77),Tina Krah (in 1986-87), and Jamie Craighead (in 2013-14) have begun their Spartans career with a win in their first game. Chatman had seven season-opening victories in her 10 years at the helm of the San José State pro-gram (1977-86), the most in Spartans history. The late Janice Richard won six of her seven season openers as the Spartans head coach (1999-2006).

ROAD OPENING WINS HARD TO COME BYIn the last 10 years, the Spartans are just 2-8 in their first game on the road. The team defeated Santa Clara 97-93 last year, but have to go back to 2004-05 and a 54-52 win at UC Irvine for their last win in the team’s first road game.

SINGLE-SEASON MARKS FELL IN 2013-14 SCORING MARK SETThe 2013-14 San José State women’s basketball set the program’s single-season record for points at 2,308. They eclipsed the previous record, 2,301 points, which was set in 1979-80.

CUNNIGAN ENTERS HER SENIOR SEASON FOURTH ON ALL-TIME SCORING LISTTa’Rea Cunnigan (Sr., G, Winchester, Calif.) has scored 1,495 career points and is in 4th place on the Spartans career-scoring list. On a layup with 1:49 to play in the first half at Air Force (2/12), she moved ahead Hulett Brooks (1990, 92-94 1,373 pts.) for the fourth spot on the list. On her first bucket against NEV (2/19), she become just fourth player in the Spartans’ 38-year history to reach the 1,400-point plateau.

Cunnigan was the 13th player to reach the 1,000-point plateau in the game against UC Riverside (11/15). She accomplished the feat in 63 games, the second fastest in program history.

IF THEY’VE GOT THE THREE THEY’LL TAKE ITWhen the Spartans launched 42 3-pointers at San Diego State (1/25), they set a San José State single game and a Mountain West Conference record. They broke the program’s previous record of 36, which was set against USF (11/20/14) and the previous MW record of 41 set by Wyoming at Colorado State (1/28/05).

San José State had four of the top six 3-point shooting games in the MW last year and four of the top five in conference games.

CUNNIGAN IN TOP-10 OF SEVEN MORE CAREER CATEGORIESThe fourth-leading scorer in program history, Ta’Rea Cunnigan (Sr., G, Winchester, Calif.) is also in the top-10 of seven other San José State career categories.

She ranks 2nd in both free throws (425) and free throw attempts (576), trailing only Cricket Wil-liams (2001-04) in both categories. Cunnigan is 41 free throws and 156 free throw attempts from tying Williams in each category.

She ranks 5th in career free throw percentage (.738) and steals (204). She is 22 steals from tying Kari Steele (1994-97) for fourth place on the program’s all-time steals list.

WOODBERRY SET 3-POINT SHOOTING MARKSIn 2013-14, her first season as a Spartan, Rebecca Woodberry (Sr., F, Phoenix, Ariz.) set numer-ous 3-point shooting record for both the team and the Mountain West Conference.

Woodberry shattered the program records for 3-point attempts with 251 and 3-pointers made with 90. The previous record for attempts belonged to Jessica Kellogg who put up 212 treys in the 2002-03 season. The 3-point field goals made record had belonged to Kari Steele who in the 1996-97 season made 74.

Her 46 made 3-pointers in Mountain West play are a conference record for a junior and the fourth most by any player in conference history. She also set the record for most 3-point attempts with 138 in conference action.

With her 2013-14 season, she moved into the top-10 of both the career 3-pointers made and 3-pointers attempted for San José State women’s basketball.

JAMES ENDS COLLEGIATE CAREERAlways a battler, Classye James (Sr., G, Palo Alto, Calif.) has fought through injuries throughout her college career. After failing to respond to offseason surgery, James decided, prior to the 2014-15, season to end her career. “Classye has been a great Spartans whose career is being cut short due to injuries,” head coach Jamie Craighead said. “She will graduate on December and we wish her well as she starts the next chapter in her life.”

PAC-12 IS NO PICNICSince the 2008-09 season the Spartans played Pac-12 schools five times. In those contests San José State is just 1-4. The lone win came in the 2009-10 season when they traveled to Berkeley and defeated California 68-66.

Head CoachJamie Craighead

Oregon (2002)Second Year

On September 16, 2013, Jamie Craighead, who coaches an up-tempo offense and stifling defense, was named the eighth head women’s basketball coach at San José State University.

Craighead came to San José State after spending four seasons at Sacramento State (2010-to-2013), where she was the winningest women’s head basketball coach in 20 years and the only coach to post a winning conference record at Sacramento State since they entered the Big Sky Conference in the 1996-97 season. Under her guidance the Hornets reached the Big Sky Conference Tournament for just the fifth (2012) and sixth (2013) times in program history. In those appearances, Sacramento State earned its first tournament wins and reached the semi-final round both years.

The youngest head coach in Division I when she took over the Hornets, Craighead’s teams, playing a fast-break type offense, led the Big Sky Conference in scoring in each of her four seasons.

Sacramento State set several program records in 2012-13 including field goals made, assists, blocked shots and fewest turnovers committed. In addition, the team’s 19 wins equaled the program’s single-season record, which was set in the 1990-91 season. The Hornets led the Big Sky in points, 3-pointers, and assists and on the defensive end, topped the league in steals and blocks.

Also in 2012-13, Craighead coached Kylie Kuhns and Megan Kritscher, two of the top post players in the Big Sky Conference. Kuhns, at only six feet tall, broke the school and Big Sky career rebounding records during the year, while also leading the team in scoring. For her efforts, Kuhns earned All-Big Sky first-team honors. Kritscher shattered the Big Sky single-season blocks record and ranked fourth in the NCAA in blocks per game for the season.

In four seasons, nine of her players garnered All-Big Sky honors. She coached 2011-12 Big Sky Freshman of the Year Fantasia Hilliard, and 23 of her athletes received Aca-demic All-Big Sky Conference honors for their work in the classroom.

Prior to accepting the top job at Sacramento State, Craighead spent the 2007-08 season as an assistant for the Hornets before being promoted to Associate Head Coach the following year.

Craighead started her coaching career in 2002 under two-time NCAA Division II Coach of the Year Gordy Presnell at Seattle Pacific University. In her three years at SPU, the team posted an 89-5 record, won three PacWest Conference titles, qualified for the NCAA Division II Tournament each year and reached the championship game in 2005. After her success in Seattle, she spent two seasons as an assistant at Portland State University before taking a position at Sacramento State.

As a collegiate player at the University of Oregon, Craighead led the Ducks to the 2002 WNIT championship after three appearances in the NCAA Tournament. When she finished her career, her 182 3-point field goals made ranked second all-time in Ducks history.

Craighead earned honorable mention Academic All-Pac-10 honors as a senior and graduated from Oregon with a bachelor’s degree in educational studies in 2002.
