PART DEUX: The Dodgers tussle with the Giants tonight in the first
game of a three-game weekend series and the second meeting between
these two rivals this season. Last week, the Giants took three of four from
the Dodgers at AT&T Park in San Francisco, despite Los Angeles holding
at least a two-run lead in each contest. Last night, the Dodgers roared back
with five runs in the seventh inning and won, 5-2, taking two of three
from Arizona. On Monday, the Dodgers travel to Atlanta and Tuesday
begin a six-game road trip that features series against the Braves (3) and
Rockies (3).
The Dodgers went 6-3 against the Giants at Dodger Stadium in
2015 and have won four consecutive home games vs. San
Francisco. Last year, Dodger relievers posted a 1.78 ERA (6
ER/30.1 IP) in eight games against the Giants at Dodger
Stadium and did not allow a home run.
In 2015, the Dodgers posted the best home winning percentage
in Los Angeles history and the fifth-best mark in franchise
history at .679 (55-26). The 55 home wins tied for the most in
LA history along with the 1980 club (55-27).
Los Angeles is opening the season with 13 consecutive games
against divisional opponents after posting a .605 winning
percentage against NL West clubs last year (46-30). The
Dodgers are attempting to become the first team since the
National League West began in 1969 to win four consecutive
division titles. The only teams with three-in-a-row are the
Dodgers (2013-15) and Braves (1991-93).
ACE TO ACE: Dodger starters have combined to go 4-1 and rank among
the Majors’ best in ERA (3rd, 2.45 ERA, 17 ER/62.1 IP), opponents’
batting average (2nd, .185, 41-for-222) and WHIP (2nd, 0.88).
Three-time Cy Young Award-winner Clayton Kershaw
matches up against Giants’ ace Madison Bumgarner for the
second time this season, following the Dodgers’ extra-inning
victory last Saturday in which both starters received a no-
decision. According to ESPN Stats and Information, this
matchup is the most common in baseball (six times) since the
start of last season and this will be their ninth battle overall. In
their previous eight matchups, Kershaw has posted a 2.14 ERA,
but is just 2-4 and the Giants have won five of the eight contests.
According to Elias, the Kershaw-Bumgarner matchup is the
most prolific in the Dodgers-Giants’ series since Doug Rau and
Jim Barr hooked up nine times from 1973-78.
Kershaw has posted a 1.57 ERA (41 ER/235.1 IP) in his career
against the Giants which, according to STATS, LLC, is the
third-lowest mark by a single pitcher against any opponent since
ERA became an official stat in 1913 (min. 200 IP). The only two
besting Kershaw are Reb Russell against the Red Sox (1.49) and
Mel Stottlemyre against the Angels (1.49).
On this date seven years ago, Kershaw became the youngest
pitcher in L.A. Dodger history (21 years, 27 days) to strike out
at least 13 batters in a game, when he did so over 7.0 innings
against the Giants at Dodger Stadium. The Dodgers won the
game, 5-4, on a walk-off walk in the bottom of the ninth, and
other than Kershaw, the only two players that appeared in that
game and are still with their respective clubs are Andre Ethier
and Matt Cain.
With five strikeouts in his last start, Kershaw moved past
Fernando Valenzuela into sole possession of fourth place on
the Los Angeles Dodgers all-time strikeout list with 1,760. Next
up is Sandy Koufax, who is third with 2,214.

A LIFE IS NOT IMPORTANT EXCEPT FOR THE IMPACT IT
HAS ON OTHER LIVES: Tonight, the Dodgers join Major League
Baseball and all MLB Clubs in celebrating Jackie Robinson Day and the
69th anniversary of the legendary Hall of Famer breaking baseball’s color
barrier in 1947. Rachel and Sharon Robinson, the wife and daughter of
Jackie Robinson, will be the Dodgers’ guests of honor this evening along
with Hall of Famer Frank Robinson, the first African-American manager
in the Major Leagues. Dodger owner Earvin “Magic” Johnson and
Dodger Special Advisor Don Newcombe, Robinson’s Brooklyn Dodger
teammate, will also be in attendance for pregame ceremonies. Frank
Robinson will throw the ceremonial first pitch to Dodger skipper Dave
Roberts, the first minority manager in Dodger history.
The Dodgers played host to Crenshaw High School’s baseball
and softball teams at Dodger Stadium this morning for a
screening of the Ken Burns’ PBS documentary “Jackie
Robinson.” Following the film screening, Dodger historian
Mark Langill and Dodger alumnus Tommy Davis led a Q&A
session.
Earlier today, MLB and the Dodgers hosted a special PLAY
BALL event, with Sharon Robinson, Carl Crawford, Trayce
Thompson and three-time Olympic gold medalist in softball
Leah Amico at Commonwealth Elementary, just minutes away
from Dodger Stadium. PLAY BALL (PlayBall.org), a joint
initiative between MLB and USA Baseball, is the sport’s largest
effort to encourage participation in baseball activities.
The Dodgers are proudly hosting the baseball and softball teams

the game this evening, courtesy of the Club’s Kids 4 Dodgers
Baseball program.
GETTING OFFENSIVE: Dodger hitters are off to a hot start, leading the
Majors with 100 hits, tied for first with 25 doubles, and ranking fourth in
the NL in team batting average (.279) under first-year hitting coach
Turner Ward. First baseman Adrian Gonzalez and right fielder Yasiel
Puig have been leading the charge for the boys in blue:

Trayce Thompson has a .349 career batting average against

(six doubles, three triples and two home runs).
SHUTTING THE DOOR: Dodger closer Kenley Jansen has closed the
door on four of the Dodgers’ six victories and is tied for third in the
Majors with four saves.
Jansen has successfully converted his last 16 save opportunities
dating to Aug. 26, 2015 and is 15 saves shy of Eric Gagné’s
Dodger-franchise record of 161 career saves.
ROSTER UPDATE: Today, the Dodgers reinstated right-handed pitcher
Chris Hatcher from the paternity list and optioned infielder/catcher
Austin Barnes to Triple-A Oklahoma City. Barnes appeared in six games
at catcher and second base and was 2-for-15 with an RBI. Hatcher and his
wife, Jenny, had their first child, baby boy Jensen Thomas, Thursday
afternoon.
