TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
When the custom of the sta onal liturgies was revived in the city of Rome in the early days of the twen eth century, the papal liturgy for Good Friday was appropriately housed in the sta onal church of Santa Croce in Gerusalemme, the Holy Cross of Jerusalem.
The church is off the tourist track today, but true pilgrims would never miss it. It stands on the grounds of the Sessorian Palace, the home of the Empress St. Helena, mother of Con-stan ne. She dedicated her life to finding the true cross of Christ in Jerusalem, and desired to found a church in Rome for people who could not make the long and dangerous trip to the Holy Land. Eventually, it came to house relics of the cross. When the pope fled the city of Rome for Avignon, the religious ins tu ons of Rome collapsed and the church was aban-doned. Centuries later it was given into the care of monks. Amazingly, it concealed a forgo en treasure. In 1492 repair-men took down a brick wall and discovered a niche with the inscrip on “Title of the Cross,” and within, an ancient wooden tablet on which was carved the inscrip on dictated by Pilate for the cross of Christ in Hebrew, La n, and Greek. No one is certain that this is authen c, although its discovery was enough to give the church great pres ge among pilgrims. The venera on of the relic of the cross located here was a factor in shaping our restored Holy Week.

The Caritas Corner Thank you all for your continued generosity and love in action in caring for our brothers and sisters in need in our community. The Caritas – or “Charity” -- Fund is administered by the San Francescani Society and funded through the second collection normally on the third Sunday of each month. Its purpose is to assist recipients – who through no fault of their own have fallen on hard times and have recognizable “one time” needs – in “getting back on their feet.” Since the beginning of the fund in Dec 2014 over $11,000 worth of assistance has been disbursed – again, as a result of your tremendous generosity.
Throughout the year we are continually looking for additional brothers and sisters in need in our community who deserve our help. We would value any input you might have in helping us identify those in need. Inputs can be made to Ron Bucchi, Society President, 210-857-1115.
All donations are tax deductible under SFDP’s 501(c) (3) designation as a not-for-profit entity. Again, we are funded through the second collection donations normally on the third Sunday of each month. In addition to the once a month second collection, the Caritas Fund ac-
cepts individual as well as business donations. Donations can also be mailed to: Henry Garcia, Treasurer, San Francescani Society, P.O. Box 782474, San Antonio, TX 78278-2474
Again, thank you for your generosity and support and we look forward to keeping you updated as we continue to help our brothers and sisters in need.
San Francescani Society

two small vases of flowers. Their name and who requested them will be acknowledged in the Sunday bulle n. The check should be made payable to Flowers by Grace and given to Rose Marie. Thank you for your help in remembering your loved one and making our church look beau ful.
