2. BROOM GOES THE DYNAMITE: The Dodgers, who have the
NL’s second-best winning percentage (.619) behind only St. Louis
(27-16, .628), take on the Padres in the finale of their three-game
series following their sixth shutout of the season last night, 2-0. Los
Angeles has a Major League-best .792 home winning percentage this
year (19-5) and is unbeaten in its last 12 home series (11-0-1), the
longest active streak in the Majors, dating to 2014. Following today’s
game, the Dodgers will close the six-game homestand with three
games against the Atlanta Braves, Monday through Wednesday.
The Dodgers are looking for their first three-game sweep
over the Padres since Aug. 30-Sept. 1, 2013.
Last night’s 2:11 game time was the fastest Dodger game
since Aug. 23, 2013 vs. Boston (2:07).
HISTORY LESSON: Last night, Dodger starter Mike Bolsinger
allowed a leadoff single to Yangervis Solarte and then immediately
erased him on a double play before he and Kenley Jansen retired the
next 25 hitters. According to Elias, the last nine-inning Major League
game in which a team faced just 27 batters, allowing only a leadoff hit
came on July 1, 1966. The Pirates' Woodie Fryman tossed that gem
against the Mets at Shea Stadium, giving up a leadoff single to New
York’s Ron Hunt, who was then caught stealing as Pittsburgh beat the
Mets, 12-0.
SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA COMFORT: Los Angeles has gone 6-
2 against San Diego this year, including a 4-1 mark at Dodger
Stadium, and last night won its’ seventh consecutive series against the
Padres. Since June 3, 2013, Los Angeles has posted a 16-5 record
against the Padres at Dodger Stadium, including eight one-run wins
(Source, Stats, LLC).
Several Dodgers have fared well against today’s San Diego
starter, James Shields, including Howie Kendrick (.517, 15-
for-29, 4 2B, 2 3B, HR, 3 RBI), Adrian Gonzalez (.361, 10-
for-28, 2 HR, 4 RBI) and Jimmy Rollins (.455, 5-for-11,
HR, 4 RBI).
Andre Ethier leads active players in both home runs (22)
and RBI (85) in 154 career games against the Padres.
JUST WARMING UP: The Dodgers claimed a victory each of the
last two nights, despite scoring just two runs in each contest. Even
with scoring a meager six runs in its’ last seven games, Los Angeles
continues to lead the National League in home runs (56) and on-base
percentage (.340), while leading the Majors in walks (161) and
slugging percentage (.450).
AUSTIN, WE HAVE LIFTOFF: New Dodger catcher Austin
Barnes is the starting catcher in this afternoon’s contest and he is
making his Major League debut. Barnes (No. 65) was recalled from
Triple-A Oklahoma City yesterday after batting .290 with five
doubles, three home runs and 13 RBI in 29 games for the OKC
Dodgers. Barnes, 25, has a .390 on-base percentage this season, and
hit safely in his last eight games with Oklahoma City. The Riverside
native was acquired by the Dodgers in a seven-player trade with
Miami on Dec. 10, 2014 and was originally selected by the Marlins in
the ninth round of the 2011 First-Year Player Draft out of Arizona
State University.
ANOTHER JOC JAM: Dodger rookie center fielder Joc Pederson
led off last night’s game with his team-best 12th home run of the
season and his third-career leadoff blast. The three leadoff homers in
one season tie Brooklyn’s Johnny Frederick (1929) for the most-ever
by a rookie in franchise history. In case you were wondering, the
overall franchise record for leadoff homers in a season is held by
current first base coach Davey Lopes, who hit seven in 1979.
BORN FRIAS: Dodger right-hander Carlos Frias will make his fifth
start of the season and first-career start against the Padres. Frias has
come out of the bullpen against San Diego three times, allowing just
one hit in 3.0 scoreless innings.
HOMETOWN HERO: Adrian Gonzalez already has six home runs
in eight games against the Padres this year, two shy of the single-
season Dodger record vs. San Diego:
Most HR by Dodger in a Single Season vs. Padres
1t. Jimmy Wynn 8 (1974)
1t. Darryl Strawberry 8 (1991)
3t. Pedro Guerrero 7 (1983)
3t. Gary Sheffield 7 (2001)
3t. Matt Kemp 7 (2012)
Source: Stats, LLC
Gonzalez is batting .484 (15-for-31) with three doubles, six
home runs and 10 RBI in eight games against San Diego this
year and has hit safely in 13 of his last 14 games vs. the
Padres dating to Aug. 29, 2014 (.414, 24-for-58). His .336
career batting average (72-for-214) in 55 games against San
Diego ranks as the third-best mark among active players:
Active Batting Leaders vs. San Diego
1. Carl Crawford .342 (52-for-152)
2. Ichiro Suzuki .337
3. Adrian Gonzalez .336 (72-for-214)
4. Buster Posey .335
5. Albert Pujols .326
Gonzalez enters today’s game just two RBI shy of 1,000 for
his career (998) and would become just the 12th active player
to reach that milestone.
SIMPLY DOMINANT: Kenley Jansen struck out one in another 1-
2-3 ninth inning last night as he picked up his third save in his fourth
appearance since being reinstated from the disabled list on May 15. It
was Jansen’s 13th consecutive scoreless appearance (13.0 IP) dating to
Sept. 5, 2014, with the right-hander going a perfect 8-for-8 in save
opportunities and limiting opponents to a .093 batting average (4-for-
43) with 19 strikeouts and a 0.54 WHIP in that span.
In 4.0 innings this year, Carlos Gonzalez is the only batter to
reach base off Jansen, doing so on a wild pitch after striking
out. Jansen has eight strikeouts and has yet to allow a hit or
issue a walk in four appearances.
Jansen’s career-long scoreless streak was a 19.0-inning run
in 17 appearances from June 18-Aug. 30, 2011.
PING PONG 4 PURPOSE: Limited tickets and sponsorship
packages are on sale now to join Clayton Kershaw and his wife,
Ellen, as they host their third annual Ping Pong 4 Purpose charity
event on Thursday, July 30 on the field at Dodger Stadium. The event
will feature celebrities and Kershaw’s Dodger teammates in a single-
elimination celebrity ping pong tournament. This night of ping pong
and fun will include social ping pong games, a high-end silent auction
and live entertainment throughout the evening. Event proceeds will
benefit the efforts of Kershaw’s Challenge in Los Angeles and the
Dominican Republic to transform at-risk communities and the lives of
children. For information on the limited tickets and sponsorship
packages still available, please email [email protected].
