Navigations of Virtual Space
Thesis Advisor: Mark Rakatansky
01
The project re-navigates the contemporary art museum accord-ing to an internal logic learned from the virtual reproduction of physical space and objects in Google Street View and Art Project. It is based in the philosophy that if constructed according to a rigorous internal logic, a virtual space (or work of art, or architec-ture, creates a self-contained world equal to our own. Reshaping our perception this world becomes the lense through which we view the world.
Reproduction(s) of MoMA New YorkGoogle Art Project has documented floors 2 and 5, in doing so reorganizing
the sequence of spaces and work according to the limitation of the method of reproduction. These ‘glitches’ then inform the (re)production of the reproduction,
at the new site in the L.E.S.

Perspective to ObliqueThe spatial navigation of the museum is driven by a sequence of shifts between forced perspectives and illusions of flat, or obliquely projected space. This sets up the gallery experience to be a heightened spatial experience, in contrast with intermediate spaces
collapsing, to act as images.

Interior shaping ExteriorAt upper levels the exhibition content relates to two distinct views to the context. The pop-out display to the Eldridge St Synagogue connects it to a permanent site history display and the
lower Manhattan skyline is pulled into the top floor through a series of reflections collpasing the city view into a spatial image.

SkinDue to the siting off the intersection of Division and Eldridge Streets the building
has two distinct faces, each is shaped by the internal operations morphing to respond to the immediate context.

Tower UseThe traditional office tower is used for 9 hours a day with enormous traffic to get to upper floors at peak times - hence the circulation core grows, eating up usable
space. What if your office came to you?

The traditional office tower serves an understanding of time de-fined during the Industrial Age - of the 40hr work-week devoted to labor. In the digital age the office is wherever/whenever, how-ever we cling to the idea that it is necessary to occupy dedicated work environments at specific times. The tower explores what it means to restructure our understanding of time tied to a me-chanical/digital device rather than a specific place.

according to social, environmental and spatial preferences - the mixing zone is a hub of social interaction.

competitive with a traditional office tower.

The Dry Dock Library is a reaction to the modern library becoming social gathering space, media hub and icon to the detriment of it’s fundamen-tal role in disseminating knowledge. It questions our relationship with knowledge, in the transition from books to data.
The library is divided by two functions. Below ground storage for books and data-servers are in strictly controlled environments. Above ground, the library is a series of specialist rooms each with specific natural light-ing, views and acoustics for accessing the knowledge. These rooms are suspended within a volume which protects them and mediates daylight and exterior conditions.
![Page 28: Samuel Weston | Parsons M.Arch '14](https://reader030.fdocuments.net/reader030/viewer/2022020210/568c508d1a28ab4916aefc04/html5/thumbnails/28.jpg)
THE LIBRARY IS NO LONGER A PLACE BUT AN ACTIVITY.
THERE IS STORAGE AND THERE IS USE.
Concept ModelsThe library is no longer a place but an activity, there is storage and then
there is use.

Section Through Reading RoomsThe ‘reading’ rooms are each sculpted for varying daylighting conditions and
scattered throughout the main volume creating informal spaces between.

Interior Circulation and Break-out AreasThe interstitial ‘fly-space’ is top lit by diffuse light and a dappled glow through the PTFE teflon-
coated membrane.

Library LandscapingThe landscaping is designed to retain stormwater (11,200 gallons) through a combination of
permeable surfaces and a detention pond - the planted areas have diverse soil, water and sun conditions and species are selected for year round blooming and to attract wildlife to the site.

Situated in the South Bronx, the project responds to a movement by the local community to eliminate the Sheridan Expressway, a 1.25 mile stretch of under-utilized highway running between the Bruckner and Cross Bronx Expressways. Currently the Sheridan Expressway acts as a divide between the natural systems of the Bronx River and the West Farms neighborhood. Its removal will allow for the local urban area to reconnect with the recovering natural system of the Bronx River. The scale and language of this infrastructure is adapted for hous-ing in the form of a mega-structure extending the urban envi-ronment out over the Bronx River greenway. It creates a human scaled infrastructural system designed specifically for the needs of its South Bronx residents.

Studio I explores waste management systems in NYC through research and analytical diagramming of waste systems from the scale of the studio to the city. The final project for a waste education center and ferry terminal focussed on the waste cycle of buildings by reusing building ma-terials from the existing waste transfer station at 125th St Har-lem. It then becomes a study of building life-cycles and a poetic response to sea level rise.
Trash Analysis DiagramAnalytical diagram exploring the waste process within the Parsons studio - then
proposing alternative process and futures.

Concept ModelThe project floats and responds to the changing aquatic environment - both the tides and the
long term rise of oceans, which will ultimately float the center free of it’s piers to a new location and use.

In collaboration with Habitat for Humanity Philadelphia we devel-oped a scheme for 5 units exploring the possibility of using CLT within the strict budgetary limitations of HFH. On top of this we strived for Passive House standards. We developed the project using Passive House Planning Package and in consultation with Nordic Engineered Wood.

Timber in the City:Debuilding
Competition / Independent Study: Andrew Bernheimer
08
Debuilding challenges current notion of permanence in buildings - treating building stock as material storage to be reused to meet future material needs. It is a response to the specific properties of CLT and the challenges of the site in the context of the Post-Superstorm Sandy city and rising waters.

Typical UnitsThe apartments embrace the rigid structural bay made necessary by using
maximum size CLT panels - the repetitive primary structure is in contrast to more permeable facades.

Face/Off Tower continues an investigation into multi-functional facades, exploring an adaptable system incorporating media and heating within the facade, in response to a competition brief from Metropolis Maga-zine and the Steel and Ornamental Metals Institute of New York. The building massing is restrained due to the desire to move away from the tower is singular icon as well as in deference to the adjacent Seagram Building. Being sited next to this Modernist icon serves to question the ‘building as machine’, as we move beyond the age of the machine to the age of digital devices, fundamentally changing the way we interact in private and urban settings.
